ConclusionReconciliation is powerful. There is no greater testimony to the power of thegospel than for those who were separate andalienated to be reconciled and brought togetherin peace. In Colossians 1:20, we are told that Christhas made peace through the blood of His cross.Through the cross we are reconciled to God and toone another. It is because of Jesus that people fromall walks of life and backgrounds, people who wouldnot seemingly have much in common, can cometogether in unity as they experience the reconcilingwork of Christ.

    1. All things (col. 1:15-20).

Tis passage gives us a glimpse o the universal, sweeping nature o christs reoniliation. Hereoniles the world to God. Beore we take a look at the osmi reoniliation desribed in thispassage, lets see what we learn about Jesus. Te apostle Paul gives us some proound statementsabout the person o christ. He begins with the truth that Jesus christ is the visible image o theinvisible God and that He is preeminent over all Gods reation. He is Lord o all.

Te apostle Paul afrms seven truths about the person o christ. Tese seven truths give usondene in the sufieny o christs work o reoniliation on our behal:

    1) christ is the Image o God (image o the invisible God)2) christ is the Preeminent over creation (rstborn over all reation)3) christ is Eternal (He is beore all things)4) christ is Sovereign (by Him all things hold together)5) christ is Head o the churh (Head o the body)6) christ is creator (He is the beginning)7) christ is Risen rom the Dead (rstborn rom the dead)

Tese seven afrmations show that christ is uniquely qualied to bring about reoniliationbetween God and humankind and the entire universe. No one else ould do it. Jesus is the basis or

reoniliation with God.Te gospel is about the reoniliation o repentant human beings to God. But the impliationso this reoniliation extend to all o reation. Gods orgiveness, given to us in christ, leads toreoniliation in all kinds o things. All things doesnt mean that every human being will be saved.(Many rejet christ and His gospel and, in so doing, reuse to be reoniled to God.) It means thatreoniliation and restoration will extend to all kinds o things, inluding nature, the environment, the universe. Nothing is beyond the redemptive aomplishment o christ.

    2. us to god (col 1:21-23).

Weve seen the osmi ous o christs work or us in reoniling all things to God. Wath

now how the apostle Paul shits his ous to the vertial nature o reoniliation: christs work oreoniliation brings people into right relationship with God.

Te vertial nature o reoniliation ouses on the realm o our personal relationship with God.Tis is the heart o the good news beause it involves our relationship status with God.

Do you see how Paul desribed our state beore oming to christ? We were alienated and hostiletoward God. Alienation and hostility are the opposite o reoniliation and restoration. Alienationrom God is an awul state o being separate rom God, estranged rom Him, without christ, and

without hope in the world (. Eph. 2:12).

Paul himsel was an example o alienation rom God. He perseuted christians prior to hisonversion to christ (Ats 8:1-3; 9:1-9). He desribed himsel without christ as a blasphemer and aperseutor, a violent man (1 im. 1:13). But the alienation and hostility o Paul was no math orthe lie-hanging love o the Risen Jesus.

christs work o reoniliation provides a stark ontrast to the alienation, hostility, and depravitywe had in our hearts toward God. In these three verses, we go rom alienated and hostile toreoniled, holy, aultless, and blameless. What an astonishing ontrast! Te gospel produes aproound break with the past.

In christ we are no longer alienated rom God. We have aess to the Father through the Sonswork o reoniliation on the ross.

    3. us to one Another (col. 1:24-2:3).

In addition to the vertial dimension o christs reoniliation, there is a horizontal dimension aswell. In other words, reoniliation brings us into right relationship with God and it also brings us

into right relationship with eah other.christ has reoniled us to one another by His shed blood on the ross. We an see in this passage

how God desires to make His glory known among the Gentiles. Te separation and alienationbetween Jews and Gentiles is destroyed by the ross o christ. Likewise, in Ephesians 2:13-14, Pauldelares the dissolution o the barrier between Jew and Gentile in christ: But now, in christ Jesus, you who were ar away have been brought near by the blood o the Messiah. For He is our peae,

who made both groups one and tore down the dividing wall o hostility.Earlier in this study, we saw how God reated us to relate rightly to one another. But sin has

aused a break in our personal relationships. Te beauty o the gospel is that reoniliation takesplae on both the vertial and horizontal levels.

o be orretly related to christ is the basis or being orretly related to others. christ hasaomplished a new unity between ations o people who one ould hardly tolerate eah other.oday, our ulture is saturated with people who plae top priority on nanial and material wealth

and rihes. But christ oers us rihes that money ould never buy. In Him all the treasures owisdom and knowledge are hidden (col. 2:3). christ makes us truly wealthy by reoniling us toone another by His wisdom and understanding.

    conclusion

Like Paul, our suering and labor are not in vain. Weve been reoniled to one another by Hisblood. Why? So that we may labor together to take the good news o Gods reoniliation in christ

to everyone on earth. ogether we are christs ambassadors with the message o reoniliation(2 cor. 5:17-21), whih means, among other things, that we share this message o reoniliationthrough the way we interat and deal with others around us. Beause o this, it is good to askyoursel regularly, Am I making muh o Jesus by being reoniled to others around me?

Reoniliation is powerul. Tere is no greater testimony to the power o the gospel than or thosewho were separate and alienated to be reoniled and brought together in peae. It is beause o Jesusthat people rom all walks o lie and bakgrounds, people who would not seemingly have muh inommon, an ome together in unity as they experiene the reoniling work o christ.
