galatians session #2 trapped by a fake gospel
DESCRIPTION
TRANSCRIPT
TRAPPED BY A PHONY GOSPEL
how to know the difference between the real gospel and the
fake gospel
29 DIFFERENT ISSUES
1. Paul was the writer and the people in Gala:an churches were the readers. 1:1-‐5
2. The Gala:ans had been fooled into forsaking the real gospel for a false gospel. 1:6-‐10
3. The original gospel proclaimed by Paul was given by personal revela:on through Jesus Christ, not learned from someone else. 1:11,12
29 DIFFERENT ISSUES
4. When Paul became a believer in Jesus Christ he didn’t go to Jerusalem (1:13-‐17)
5. When Paul went to Jerusalem aOer three years he didn’t talk about the gospel message he was preaching (1:18-‐24)
6. When Paul went to Jerusalem aOer 14 years he was opposed by false believers but affirmed by the apostles and leaders (2:1-‐10)
29 DIFFERENT ISSUES
7. Paul had to defend the real gospel in front of Peter and the whole church at An:och (2:11-‐15)
8. The real gospel doesn’t work the same way as tradi:onal Jewish religion (2:15,16)
9. The real gospel starts with a death and resurrec:on (2:17-‐21)
10. The real gospel involves supernatural Holy Spirit power at work in you (3:1-‐5)
29 DIFFERENT ISSUES
11. The real gospel is as old as Abraham (3:6-‐9) 12. The real gospel works the same way in every
na:on and culture (3:10—14) 13. The coming of the law of Moses didn’t
change the gospel message (3:15-‐18) 14. The reason the law was given was to point us
to Christ (3:19,20) 15. The law is like a child-‐minder wai:ng for the
heir to make his/her own choice (3:21-‐4:3)
29 DIFFERENT ISSUES
16. The real gospel makes us sons and daughters, not just members of staff (4:4-‐11)
17. Paul was showing love by telling them the truth (4:12-‐16)
18. The goal of the gospel is for Christ to fully shape your life (4:17-‐20)
19. The comparison between the real and fake gospels can be seen in the story of Ishmael and Isaac (4:21-‐31)
29 DIFFERENT ISSUES
20. The genuine gospel works by grace to produce freedom (5:1-‐6)
21. The people who promote the fake gospel will always persecute those who want to live by the real gospel (5:7-‐12)
22. The real gospel is not a :cket to greater self indulgence (5:13-‐15)
23. Real gospel freedom is to live by the power of the Spirit (5:16-‐18)
29 DIFFERENT ISSUES
24. A life lived by unrestrained regular human nature produces its tell-‐tale results (5:19-‐21)
25. A life lived by Holy Spirit power produces different tell-‐tale results (5:22-‐26)
26. The real gospel is about ge\ng free from the power of sin (6:1-‐5)
27. All of our choices will produce a mul:plied result much like a harvest (6:6-‐10)
A FAKE GOSPEL?
HOW DO A REGULAR GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BECOME FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST SET ASIDE THE REAL GOSPEL FOR….
GALATIANS 1:6-‐10
6 I am totally amazed that you could so quickly desert the one who called you into the grace of Christ and turn to a different gospel message, which is not the same as the gospel message you originally received. 7 There really is no ‘other’ gospel. Certain people have been causing trouble among you and their aim is to pervert the genuine gospel of Christ.
GALATIANS 1:6-‐10
8 Even if we, or an angel from heaven should come and proclaim to you a different gospel from the one you received he should be considered accursed. 9As I have just said, and say again: if anyone should come to you preaching or teaching a different gospel message than the one you received when we first came he should be considered as accursed.
GALATIANS 1:6-‐10
10 When I speak in this way, do you think I am trying to please people or God? If I was ever found to be trying to please people I would not be a genuine servant of Christ.
GOD HAD SOMETHING HE WANTED TO SAY
The ongoing aim for us is to discover what God has said
IT WAS SO IMPORTANT THAT HE PRESERVED IT FOR EVERYONE EVERYWHERE
GOD SAYS UNIQUE THINGS ONLY BECAUSE HE WANTS TO DO UNIQUE THINGS
GOD WANTS TO DO UNIQUE THINGS IN US SO THAT HE CAN DO UNQIUE THINGS THROUGH US

INFORMATION
1. What has happened is amazing. 2. The followers of Christ in the Gala:an
churches have deserted the idea of following God.
3. The message they have adopted is not the same as the message they originally received.
4. It is not a gospel message at all. 5. This has come about because certain people
have caused trouble among them.
INFORMATION
6. The aim of the people causing trouble is to make their message sound like the gospel but in fact it is a perversion of the gospel.
7. Anyone who tries to pervert the gospel should be “accursed” no ma`er what authority they claim to represent (angels, older believers etc.)
8. Paul is speaking this way as a servant of Christ, not as someone trying to please other people.
THE SITUATION 1. Paul and Barnabas came to this region on their first
missionary journey (c. 48,49 AD) 2. Some:me aOer they had returned to An:och,
conserva:ve Jewish believers came to the Gala:an churches telling them that they had to adopt Jewish tradi:ons in order to be genuine followers of Christ.
3. A mee:ng was called in Jerusalem to sort out the issue rela:ng to Gen:le followers of Christ. (49/50 AD)
4. Paul had already confronted this problem and had taken a strong stand that Gen:les should not be required to adopt Jewish religious tradi:ons. (49/50 AD)

FAKE GOSPELS?
THE REAL GOSPEL
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO DO IN US SO THAT HE CAN DO THINGS THROUGH US?
WHAT?
1. The fake gospel can turn up by means of some very credible people.
2. The fake gospel can sound like a message that IMPROVES the real gospel – ie. Adds to it
3. Some:mes people pervert the gospel without realizing what they are doing.
4. The real gospel must be defended. 5. Defending the real gospel will some:mes
mean offending good people
