Rest, in Gods world, isnt merely a luxury. Its a

deep need. Resting allows us to step into the verywiring o Gods world, living in a way that Hesdesigned us to live. We acknowledge our nitude:were small and weak creatures utterly dependentupon Him. As we rest, the universe spins on withoutus. 1. designed (gen. 2:1-3).

A rhythm o work and rest is woven into our world. Even Gods work o reation ollows the pattern. In chapter 1 o Genesis, we see God work or six days, alling the whole reation into being insteady rhythms. On the seventh day, God rested rom His work.

Do you see the authors emphasis on the seventh day? He mentions it three times. Tis repetitionsignals to us that the seventh day is important. Tis seven-day-week was the way Gods people wouldmark the passing o time. Te week provided a rhythm in whih they would live. For six days, they

would ollow God by working in reation, and on the seventh, they would join Him in rest.Notie also that God blessed the seventh day and delared it holy. Tis is the rst thing in the

Sriptures that God sets apart as holy. Its a sared mark on our alendars, a way o measuring timethat reets what God intended when He made the world.

For God, and or the rst man and woman, there was no tension between work and rest. Workand rest werent opposite poles pulling people in two diferent diretions. Instead, they were apartnership, a oherent rhythm o lie that reminded people that God was the Lord o creation. He

worked, and He alls us to work. He rested, and He alls us to rest.Resting allows us to step into the very wiring o Gods world, living in a way that Hes designed

us to live. We aknowledge our nitude: were small and weak reatures utterly dependent uponHim. As we rest, the universe spins on without us. A billion galaxies boil away in spae, nationsrage, oeans rush against shorelines, and the milk in the ridge reeps loser and loser to spoiling.

Nothing we an do will hange any o those ats. Te invitation to rest is an invitation toaknowledge that we know our weakness, we know that were dust, and we know that Hes got theworld in His hands.

    2. disrupted (eccl. 6:1-7).

Unortunately, rest is not immune to the orrupting efets o sin on the world. Just as our work hasbeen twisted into something it was never meant to be, our rest too has been orrupted. For manyo us, weve been robbed o rest. Blinded by sin, spurred by ambition, we live restless, rekless, andempty lives o easeless and joyless work.

Te vision set orth by the author o Elesiastes is tragi, isnt it? We spend our lives earning,

spending, and onsuming. But many o us never enjoy the ruit o our labor. We rave more.Pleasures ail to satisy, and we ontinue our vain searh or more.

And yet, thats the lie so many o us live. We ool ourselves into thinking that its truly better tolive these hurried, easeless, renzied lives, rather than allowing God to give us the git o rest. As thepsalmist says, In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough oodyes, Hegives sleep to the one He loves (Ps. 127:2). Our restless striving is vanity! A blessing is ofered to us,and we hoose more busyness, more hardship, thinking that we know better, that our eforts mightprove something about who we are. Or we believe that things will all apart without us.

Others make the opposite mistake. Beause work is hard, and beause we eel weary, we withdrawrom work. We beome a man or woman o leisure, looking or every opportunity to esaperesponsibility and nd a omortable hair somewhere.

Its the olly o the sluggard, a oolishness that throws its hands up in hopelessness in the sight

o hard work. Its the kind o olly that the proverbs address again and again: Te slacker craves, yet has nothing, but the diligent is ully satisfed(Prov. 13:4). It might be the student who opies thehomework assignment rom a riend, or the student who has the minimalist attitude o aiming ora passing c in all o his lasses. Or it might be the athlete who onstantly makes up exuses to getout o pratie to go home and wath television. Sometimes, its even more subtle. Its the student

who says theyre too busy to serve in hurh or help someone in the ongregation. Its anyone whowants to onsume without ontributingin hurh, work, amily or elsewhere in the ommunity.

    3. redeeMed (heb. 4:1-11).

Te answer to our hurry and the answer to our apathy is the same: we need to hear the gospel. Te

lie, death, and resurretion o Jesus transorm our relationships to work and rest, and they invite usinto the deepest, truest kind o rest. Tis passage is reerring to the Israelites, whose journey towardsrest was merely a oretaste o the rest ofered in Jesus. Moses and Joshua led them rom slavery inEgypt, through the wilderness, and into the promised land, where they rested rom their journeyingand lived with God in their midst. But the author o Hebrews points out that another rest remained.

A day was oming when a greater git o rest would be given to Gods people. As the author notes: We who have believed [christians] enter the rest. Te one who enters His

rest has rested rom his own works, just as God did rom His. He onludes the statement with aninteresting phrase, Let us then make every efort to enter that rest.

Te book o Hebrews goes on to show how Jesus ullled the promises o the Old estament,

taking the plae o the priest and the sarie to one and or all atone or our sins. Te promisedrest, the deeper rest or Gods people, is a rest rom all o our anxious eforts at trying to proveourselves to God. Where Israel had to regularly return to the temple and ontinually ofer sariesto pay or their sins, Jesus made a one-time payment, a peret payment. christs work means we anrest rom having to justiy ourselves.

Te gospel omorts us with the good news: Jesus is enough. Hes enough to orgive us, to restoreus, to make lie meaningul and good. In Him, we have nothing to earn, nothing to prove, nothingto win. We an rest beauseJesus has fnished the most important work in our lives.

    conclusion

When we ail to take time to rest, we ail in our mission. Gods kingdom is not extended throughgritted teeth and determination o people who ant stop working. We an prolaim the dotrine ojustiation by aith (that people are made right with God by aith in christ alone, not by works)as muh as we like, but i our lives are examples o everish, sel-justiying ativity, then we disountour message with our lives.

Our mission is most efetive when we are modeling a better way o being human, a way thatreognizes our reaturely dependene on our creator and bekons people to taste the sweet rest o

Jesus christs salvation. Work and rest. We reet God to the world by doing both.
