The work God designedhas been...One o the ways we refect God is through our work. Godcreated us to work in the Garden, and through our work,to serve Him and others. Due to our sin, however, work istoilsome and oten seems utile, and we adopt a wrongposture toward work. But because o the work o JesusChrist, our work once again becomes purposeul as itpoints us toward new creation.

Commanded.Just as God shaped the dust and transormed it intosomething new, we take creation, shape it, and transormit into something new. The parade o animals that walks

beore Adam is a parade o chaos and disorder. They awaitthe caretaking leadership o mankind to name them, imposing a sense o order and belonging. The animals arepart o the wilderness, and his work incorporates them intothe order o the Garden.

Conclusion One way that the testimonyo the gospel will have credibility with the worldaround us is through the testimony o our work. Inthis sense, all work is connected to our mission. Theintegrity o our work says something to the rest othe world about what it means to be a Christian.

    1. coMMAnded (gen. 2:15-17; 1 thess. 4:9-12).

Te garden was a workplae. We see Adam at work in verse 19 o Genesis 2: So the Lord Godormed out o the ground every wild animal and every bird o the sky, and brought eah to the manto see what he would all it. And whatever the man alled a living reature, that was its name.

In the same way that God had taken the haos and void o reation and brought order, mankindwas meant to ontinue the work by tending the Garden, naming the animals, and aring or andexpanding the order and beauty o Gods world. Adams work was a good thing. We were made to

work, ollaborating with Gods reative work, aretaking, nurturing, and developing.Pauls words give us another window into the way God sees work. First o, we see Paul make the

onnetion to brotherly love. He enourages the Tessalonians beause they have demonstrated thelove o God in the way they love one another, and he spurs them on to do so all the more by leadinga quiet lie, minding their own business, and working with their hands.

Work isnt in there as a throwaway line. In the world o the Tessalonians, manual labor wasseen as demeaning. Te prevailing philosophy o the day viewed work as inherently demeaning andshameul. Te wealthiest members o soiety wanted to live lives o leisure, waited on hand and ootby servants and slaves. By enouraging the hurh to work with their hands, Paul was digniying

work in a way that would have sounded prooundly ounterultural. All good work has a positive eet on the ommunity around it, and that eet should motivate

our work. Its not only or our own benet. Paul didnt say that everyone go into ministry or

soial servies. In at, Paul didnt talk about that kind o work at all. Hes talking about ordinary, everyday, good work, the kind o work that would have been seen as undignied by his Tessalonianreaders. House painting is the kind o work Paul would have enouraged. It makes the ommunitya better plae, leaving houses and ofe buildings more beautiul than they were beore. It allowssomeone to earn a living, supporting his amily, and ultimately investing that money bak into theommunity as his pays his own bills and support others.

    2. corrupted (gen. 3:17-19; eccl. 2:22-23).

Work is good, but beause o sin, it is oten a struggle. Ever sine sin entered the world, what wasmeant or our good has been ursed, and our eorts in work push against a world that resists us.

We looked in Genesis 2 at Gods intention or human eort in the Garden. Lets jump one hapterahead into Genesis 3. Do you see whats happened? Where work had been reated as a ollaboration

with God, done in harmony with the world around us, it suddenly beame an uphill battle. Te soilbraed itsel against us, weeds rept into our gardens, and the branhes that produed ood began toteem with thorns.

Torns and thistles make work painul, leading to sore hands, ahing baks, and tired minds.Teyre also what make it relentless. Weeds grow up again and again, no matter how many times welear the area and turn the soil. Tey arent simply a possibility; theyre a guarantee. Work will behard. Work will resist you. Work will never be done.

Generally, this leads to one o two responses. On the one hand, we see people who respond bydevoting their lives to work, hoping to nd a sense o purpose in suess, money, and power. On theother hand, we see people who eel overwhelmed by the hallenge and rushed by a sense o utility.

For those who eel trapped in work that overwhelms, there is good news. Work doesnt have to

dene us, and it doesnt have to drive us to exhaustion. Te gospel transorms everything about ourlives, inluding our work. In at, the gospel has a proound relationship with work.

    3. restored (rev. 21:22-22:5).

Te gospel itselthe work o Jesus in His lie, death, and resurretionis a work that rees us romthe toilsome eets o work. Te author o Hebrews desribed the priest who stood in the templeevery day and made saries (Heb. 10:11-14). For Israels priests, worship was work. Saries hadto be oered in a spei way, at spei times, with dire onsequenes i mistakes were made.

Into that misery ame Jesus, who oered an entirely dierent kind o sarie: His own bodyand blood. Tis sarie is peret, and its peretly oered. His peret work brought about peret

results, and our sins were one-and-or-all taken away. Its a work that rees us rom work; we nolonger have to work to nd reedom or our sins. We no longer have to work to eel aeptable and

worthwhile. Where the god o work demands that we do more and do better, the gospel tells us,done. Where work would rush us with a burden we an never arry, the gospel relieves us o duty.Beause Jesus peretly ullled His work, we are now reed rom having to prove ourselves throughours. Instead, were invited to work as work was meant to be.

Not only that, beause o Jesus work, we an have proound hopes about the uture o work.Where thorns and thistles dominate our landsape today, a day is oming where theyll no longerplague us. Te apostle John gave us a glimpse o that world in the book o Revelation.

Tis world not only harkens to the uture, but also to the past. Its not something new, but the

restoration o something anient, lost, and desperately longed or. In at, beause o Jesus, theGarden has not only been restored, its been expanded into a sparkling and glorious ity.Until that day, we an only taste glimpses o it. We do so as we work or the good o our ities and

neighborhoods, serving others as we live lives that show not only that work is good, but also thatwork isnt everything.

    conclusion

In reation, God invited Adam and Eve to join Him in the making o the worldbeing ruitul andmultiplying, extending the garden, and ruling over reation with an ever-expanding reign o order.

In redemption, were invited to do the same. Instead o the haos o the wilderness, there is a lost

and broken world, and instead o a garden, there is the hurhthe beloved amily o Godredeemedby the blood o Jesus. With God, the people o God are agents o hange that bring order into haos, light into darkness, and beauty rom ashes.

Our love-motivated work is a witness to the wider world. One way that the testimony o the gospelwill have redibility with the world around us is through the testimony o our work. As christians,we an work as hard as anyonewere motivated to work out o love or God and neighbor, and wehave a vision or our work that involvesparticipating in Gods mission in the world. At the same time,

we an live in suh a way that work doesnt rule our livesa prooundly ounter-ultural way to livein our present world.
