JUNE 3, 2018 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (CORPUS CHRISTI)

SCRIPTURE READINGS

First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8 Moses explained to the people the commandments he had received from God. Upon hearing them, the entire community immediately agreed they would do as God had told them. Moses then sacrificed young bulls and sprinkled the people with their blood, calling it the blood of the covenant they had made.

Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15 Jesus did not offer God the blood of sacrifices, but instead he offered up his own blood to cleanse all people of the transgressions they had committed under the first covenant with God. Christ instead brought a new covenant, which, if kept, would lead to eternal life.

Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 Jesus sent two of his disciples to prepare the Passover supper. During the meal he blessed bread and offered it to them saying, “This is my body.” He then offered them wine and called it his blood, “the blood of the covenant, to be poured out on behalf of many.”

Rejoice, for now you are truly children of God.

This week’s SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

1) In our reading from Exodus, Moses speaks about commitment. Why do you think commitment is in short supply in our world today?

2) What aspects of the Holy Eucharist do I find most beneficial?

3) How do our own family rituals at dinner time and around the family table reflect the Eucharist?

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION Tuesday morning discussions will resume in September.

THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI

SUNDAY, JUNE 3

12:00 PM Fr. Martin’s 50th Anniversary Mass

Today we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, the belief in the body and blood of Jesus Christ and His Real Presence in the Eucharist. This is the one time when our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is exposed to the outside world, when Catholics show their love for Christ by honoring Him in a very public way.

Because of Fr. Martin’s reception after the 12noon Mass, we will not have our annual procession with the

Blessed Sacrament around the outside of the Church this year.

Page 3: P.O. Box 464, Andover, NJ 07821...June 3, 2018 Fr. Martin was ordained on June 8, 1968 Good Shepherd R.C. Church, 48 Tranquility Road (Route 517), P.O. Box 464, Andover, NJ 07821 973-786-6631

Fr. Martin was born on February 25, 1943 to John and Margaret of Dysart, County Roscommon, Ireland. As the fourth of five children, his youth was filled with family, schooling, and rigorous farm chores. A mainstay of family life was quiet evening prayer. He always credits his parents, who instilled and nurtured his faith. Through the years, he would return on vacation to the family farm (always eager to pitch right in with the farming chores).

Fr. Martin was ordained on June 8, 1968 after six years of study at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Carlow, Ireland and came to the Diocese of Paterson in August of that year.

His early assignments were Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s, Denville, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Pompton Plains, and Our Lady of Mercy, Whippany. In 1982, Bishop Rodimer appointed Fr. Martin as Administrator of a newly formed faith community, Saint Ann, Parsippany and in 1983 appointed him as first Pastor where he continued to serve for the next 26 years.

In 1998 Fr. Martin was named Monsignor by Saint Pope John Paul II.

In 2009 he became Pastor of St. Anthony Church, Hawthorne and then on July 16, 2011 Bishop Serratelli named Fr. Martin as Pastor of Good Shepherd, serving here until his retirement on June 26, 2016. Fr. Martin found his “second family” here at Good Shepherd. His spiritual leadership, inspiring homilies and love sustained us, while his warmth, jovial laugh, enveloping hugs and smiling Irish eyes forever bonds us and endears him to us.

Fr. Martin has been plenty busy in his retirement with hospital work and filling it at many parishes throughout the Diocese. Currently he is on a temporary assignment at St. Matthew the Apostle, Randolph. He still finds the time to enjoy a weekly “good game of golf” and relishes the sunrise from his home on Lake Hopatcong. One of his most favorite past times is taking his boat, the “Maggie May”, named after his beloved mother, on a spin across the lake.

This July Fr. Martin will continue his 50th Anniversary celebration by returning to his family home in Ireland and celebrating Mass with family and friends where the strong roots of his vocation began.

When asked to reflect on what the past fifty years of priestly ministry

has meant to him, Fr. Martin expressed his thoughts as follows:

As I celebrate my 50th Anniversary of Priesthood I am so grateful for so many blessings over these past fifty years.

The Lord has shown me over the years that he is full of surprises. He doesn’t necessarily call the very gifted but he certainly gifts the ones he calls. If I had any hesitation or doubt going into the priesthood, it had

nothing to do with whether God was calling me or not but it had everything to do with how could I, a quiet, introverted farm boy from

Co. Roscommon, Ireland, possibly be qualified to lead a faith community? Each and every step of the way He has clearly shown me that he never calls anyone to do a specific job in His vineyard without fully equipping that person with all the tools he needs to get the mission accomplished.

I am forever grateful to all who made these past fifty years for me such a blessing.

God bless you. Fr. Martin

May the Strength of God guide you. May the Hand of God protect you.

May the Way of God direct you. May the Grace of God always be with you.

We’ve been Blessed by your ministry and thank Our God for you.

“I became a priest because I wanted to share the Good News, and it is still true today.”

“I have loved every minute of being a priest.” ~ Fr. Martin

Perhaps you can think of someone who longs to have a closer relationship with our Heavenly Father, Jesus his Son and the Catholic Church.

Perhaps you are meant to plant the seeds of hope as you speak of our Father's loving care and his everlasting promises fulfilled in the sending of his Son and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps you are the one who can offer an invitation to take that first step toward full initiation into the Catholic Church through Good Shepherd's Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process for those who are not baptized, are baptized in other faiths or are adult Catholics who were not confirmed.

Sometimes all it takes is a little encouragement for someone to place a call to Fr. Tim for further details. A new RCIA program will begin in the Fall - please start the discussion soon.

Faith Formation Notes

Family Connection

Gospel Reading—Mark 14:12-16,22-26 Jesus shares his Last Supper with his disciples.

In the beginning of today’s Gospel, Jesus instructs his disciples to make preparations for the Passover meal. Like most meals, the Passover meal required planning and preparation. Our celebration of the Sunday Eucharist also requires planning and preparation. Certainly the ministers at the Eucharist prepare for their roles: the person presiding prays and prepares the homily; the prayers of petition are written; the music ministers prayerfully select music and practice it before Mass; Eucharistic ministers, lectors and altar servers prepare carefully for their roles. As the worshiping assembly, we can also prepare for the Mass through our prayer during the week, by reading the Scripture before Mass, and by making ourselves present to the Eucharistic celebration.

As you gather as a family, talk about some of the things that are required to prepare for your family meals. Plan together a special Sunday meal by choosing the menu, preparing the shopping list, and assigning duties for cooking, setting the table, preparing decorations, leading the prayers, and cleaning. Read together to-day’s Gospel, Mark 14:12-16,22-26. Notice how Jesus instructed his disciples to prepare for their Passover meal. All meals require some kind of planning and preparation; so, too, our Sunday Eucharist requires plan-ning. What might we do as a family to better prepare for our celebration of the Eucharist? Choose one or more ideas to begin to implement together as a family. Pray together that God will help your family make your celebration of the Eucharist the highlight of your week. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer. (Loyola Press)
