SCRIPTURE READINGS

First Reading: Acts 2:1‑11 Luke describes the decent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, and the effect it had on them. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b‑7, 12‑13 The Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different people for the good of the Church, the Body of Christ. Gospel: John 20:19-23 The risen Jesus gives the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples and inaugurates the mission of the Church.

COLLECTION BREAKDOWN: May 19th - May 25th:

Many thanks to all of our parishioners who respond each week to the needs of our parish and who make their weekly offering a part of their budget. May God bless you for your generosity.

Scripture reflection with Fr. Tim + Pause + Reflect + Act +

1) Do you pray each day for the power of the Holy Spirit? How can this power help you in your choices, decisions and daily activities?

2) St. Paul says everyone receives gifts from the Holy Spirit. How can you develop those gifts to serve others better?

3) The Disciples were afraid, behind locked doors at the beginning of this reading (Gospel). When have you experienced fear or doubt about your faith?

4) In today’s Gospel, Jesus greets his disciples by offering them peace. How do you strive to bringing Christ’s peace to those you greet each day?

PENTECOST SUNDAY

ASK A FRANCISCAN… Where can I get more information about the writings of St. Clare and other women saints? New City Press has published Clare of Assisi: The Lady (Early

Documents). Clare of Assisi: A Heat Full of Love, by Ilia Delio,

OSF, is available from Franciscan Media. Robert Ellsberg’s

book Blessed Among All Women: Women Saints, Prophets, and

Witnesses for Our Time (Crossroad) has 136 entries, each

including a reference to one or more books about that

woman. Not all have been formally canonized, but each one

is well worth knowing.

A Message from Fr. Tim Pentecost Sunday 2020

Greetings and prayers:

As we journey with the early Church from Ascension to Pentecost, we are in a Novena mode and can learn much from our first reading today. The early community in fear, with anxiety, uncertainty about their future, and unsure leadership drew strength from their companionship and joined with Mary, our Mother in prayer.

We can also learn from the example of Jesus, whose first action of His encounter with the disciples in John’s Gospel is “PEACE”. This action reveals so much especially when we realize on the last occasion that Jesus and His disciples were together, they abandoned, denied, and ran from Him. We need to have the courage, fortitude, and love of the women, John and Mary, our Mother.

Since the pandemic began, we like Jesus can show our hands and side. The pain of our restrictions, lack of physical pres-ence and the inability to celebrate in community has been a painful experience for all. At this time, it is very appropriate to celebrate Pentecost. Our world, our country and our families need the Spirit of God and the Gifts of Pentecost to help us all begin anew.

It was our hope last week that we would be with you for Pentecost, but alas permission was not granted from Governor Murphy. Being in a position of authority is not an easy job and can be quite a lonely place. As we try to balance the care of our bodies and souls, we can scream, yell, and point fingers but where does that get us?

We continue to plan in preparation for our opening. We realize there will be baby steps, various phases to encounter before we have the ability for full capacity. We have decided in the interest of safety for all involved to move the celebration of First Eucharist to October 3rd, the feast of St. Francis. The reception of the sacrament of Confirmation will take place, as well, at some time in the fall. We do this in anticipation that the capacity restrictions will be reduced and hopefully removed at that time.

We are grateful for your ongoing support, generosity, and

patience. We pray that as Jesus’ breath inspired broken,

uncertain, and scared disciples, that same breath will give us

PEACE.

Peace, Fr. Tim

Pentecost marks the occasion of God sending the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ disciples after his resurrection. The book of Acts describes how the disciples were gathered together in one place on the day of Pentecost. The Jewish feast of Pentecost was a day that commemorated the giving of the law to Moses, a day soon to be marked, as well by the giving of the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave the disciples the strength to fulfill their commission to spread the Good News of Jesus. The Solemnity of Pentecost, which crowns and fulfills the Easter season, is a good time to pray for a deeper indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Please join His Holiness, Pope Francis, who has chosen the following intention

to be prayed for during the month of May.

For Deacons: We pray that deacons, faithful in their service to the Word and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church.

FAITH FORMATION NOTES

Gospel Reading John 20:19-23 Jesus appears to his disciples and gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Family Connection

Pentecost is sometimes called the birthday of the Church. The Gospel for Pentecost reminds us that the Church begins with the command to forgive. Within the family, the domestic Church, we learn how to forgive and how to accept forgiveness. The gift of the Holy Spirit enables us to do both.

As you gather together as a family, sit quietly for a few minutes, inviting everyone to reflect upon their need to forgive and to receive forgiveness. If there is a situation or an issue within the family that needs attention, spend some time reflecting on how your family might address it. (Loyola Press)

Pope Francis on the actions of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit changes hearts

His action frees hearts, impels service, guides people in new directions, and makes “the lukewarm thrill to new dreams.”

The Holy Spirit gives life That since the Holy Spirit provokes change that we turn to Him for a “powerful ‘jolt’ ” when “we are in need of real change”. He is “the power of God” and the “giver of life”. The Holy Spirit changes situations

The Holy Spirit “penetrates the most unimaginable situations” as with the Apostles and St. Paul.

The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church

That as the soul of the Church, the Holy Spirit renews her with hope, fills her with joy, and causes her to blos-som with new life. Even after 2000 years, “the Spirit reminds the Church that…she is always the youthful bride with whom the Lord is madly in love”. ( excerpted Vatican News 2018)

CELEBRATION OF FIRST EUCHARIST is scheduled for Saturday,

October 3rd.

RECEPTION OF THE SACRAMENT

OF CONFIRMATION

will take place in the fall. Families will be notified of

the date as soon as possible.

Prayer Oh God, Father of mercies, Whose Only Begotten Son, as he hung upon the Cross, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary, His Mother, to be our Mother also, Grant, we pray that with her loving help, your Church may be fruitful day by day and in exulting in the holiness of her children, may draw to her embrace all the families of the peoples.
