    SCRIPTURE READINGS

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah speaks poetically of the coming of the Lord. He describes how “darkness covers the earth” but light and glory appear over God’s chosen people.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 God invites Jew and Gentile to share on an equal footing the salvation brought by Christ.

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Three Gentiles came from a far country to pay homage to the Christ-child, while the Jewish leaders rejected him.

Scripture reflection with Fr. Tim + Pause + Reflect + Act +

    1) Describe actions that have a positive effect on others.

    2) Where do you see hope in your life?

    3) How well do you accept people of different races and cultures? What are some ways you can fight discrimina-tion in today’s society?

    4) Trace the moments of Epiphany in your life. Are there traces of “power, divine presence, and death” in them?

    5) What does the story of the Magi searching, have to say to you in your life?

  • Saint John Neumann

    Feast Day – January 5th 1181-1860

A native of Bohemia, John entered the seminary and was nearing ordi-nation when he departed for the United States. He joined the Redemptorists and served as a priest in New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania. In 1852, he was named the fourth bishop of Philadelphia. He founded more than 50 churches and greatly expanded Catholic educa-tion. John had a fondness for immigrants and knew six lan-guages. His pastoral zeal was evident up to his last moments of life. He collapsed and died in the street at age 48.

    THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

    January 3, 2021

    “As we begin the New

    Year, may we discover

    anew that faith demands

    worship. If we can fall

    on our knees before

    Jesus, we will overcome

    the temptation to set off

    on our own path.”

    (Pope Francis, Jan. 6,

    2020)

On this Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, we remem-

ber that God came to earth for everyone, every nation,

    every people.

    ASK A FRANCISCAN…

Confession has been a really sore spot for me but, having been raised a Catholic, I do love the Church and all the other sacraments. I feel so uncomfortable and always feel that God already knows my sins and what I am sorry for. Will I go to hell for feeling this way? Will God forgive me if I am truly sorry?

You will not go to hell for feeling that way - only if you com-mit some mortal sin for which you refuse to repent. Will God forgive you if you are truly sorry? Yes.

You may, however, be seeing repentance and forgiveness too narrowly. Sin cuts us off not only from God but also from other people. Repentance is not simply about straightening things out with an angry God who, in human terms, is actu-ally more disappointed than angry. Repentance is also about admitting that our sins affect how we treat other people.

The Roman Catholic faith is an incarnational one, a sacra-mental one, a faith which sees God acting through physical objects (water, oil, bread, wine) and by means of human in-struments, including a priest hearing confessions.

In almost 25 years of hearing confessions, I have always been humbled and edified as people face their sinfulness, accepting God’s love and forgiveness. Remember, confes-sors go to confession, too!

Thank You to all of our parishioners for the many cards, goodies and gifts we received for Christmas this year. We are honored that

you remembered us and wish to express our sincere appre-ciation for your thoughtful-ness and your generosity. ~ Fr. Tim and Fr. Michal

HAVE YOU UPDATED YOUR PARISH MEMBERSHIP LATELY?

Do you have an adult child that no longer lives at home?

If they still live locally, they should re-register at Good Shepherd Parish with their new address and contact info.

If they have moved away, please encourage them to register at their local church.

Most Catholic Churches, including ours, will require that sponsors for Baptism, Confirmation or RCIA be an active, registered member of a parish. It is very important that young adults establish their own membership where they live and attend Mass. Every church office keeps important sacra-mental information. Registration forms are available on our website or call the Parish Office.

    SICK, HOMEBOUND OR HOSPITAL VISITATION

If you or a loved one is sick or homebound or in the hospi-tal, please call the Parish Office, (973) 786-6631, so we can

arrange for the Eucharist to be brought to you.

Please remember to patronize those businesses who adver-tise in our Bulletin! Also, if you are a business owner, please consider advertising with us and supporting this important weekly communication. Thank you in advance! Contact Bob Cianci at [email protected] for more information.

  • FAITH FORMATION NOTES

Thank you to Bella, Catherine, Grady & Andrew for lighting the third candle of our Advent Wreath.

Gospel Reading Matthew 2:1-12 The Magi seek out Jesus and do him homage.

    Family Connection

The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is thought by some to be rooted in the gift giving of the Ma-gi. In many cultures, gifts are not exchanged at Christmas, but rather on the feast of the Epiphany. Whenever you exchange your Christmas gifts, take some time to reflect on this tradition of gift giving at Christmas. Think of the best gift you have received. What was it? What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the thought that went into it, or the person who gave it to you?

Read today’s Gospel, Matthew 2:1-12. The gifts of the Magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—have come to be understood as symbols of Christ’s royalty, divinity, and eventual suffering and death. They are special because in giving them, the Magi acknowledge who Jesus was to be: our Savior. We pray that we will acknowledge Jesus as Savior in all that we do and say. Conclude by singing together “We Three Kings.” (Loyola Press)

Thank you to the Brennans, the Vince-Cruzes, Reagan & Dylan for reading at the Christmas Eve Mass.

  • Please join His Holiness, Pope Francis, who has chosen the following intention

to be prayed for during the month of January.

Intention for Evangelization - Human Fraternity May the Lord give us the grace to live in full fellowship with our brothers and sisters of other religions, praying for one another, open to all.

In the Catholic Church, Holy Days of Obligation are the days on which the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. They have to also abstain from unnecessary works, "which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind

and body." (Canon 1247 of the Code of Canon Law).
