Gamification Proposal

for the purpose of obtaining the Engagement Alliance Level 2 Certification.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)MS is the most widespread disabling neurological condition of young adults around the world. It can be developed at any age, but most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. There are relapsing and remitting types of MS and progressive types, but the course is rarely predictable.

The good news is that many people with MS don’t become severely disabled and most have a normal or near-normal lifespan.

The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation estimates that about 2.5 million people around the world have MS.

MS & ExerciseExercise is the single most effective non-pharmacologycal approach for managing symptoms of MS.Dalgas U, Stenager E. Progressive resistance therapy is not the best way to rehabilitate deficits due to multiple sclerosis: no. Mult Scler. 2014 Feb;20(2):141-2.

The loss of walking ability is one of the most burdensome features of MS, and patients with MS place considerable value on this particulary function.Heesen C, Böhm J, Reich C, Kasper J, Goebel M, Gold SM. Patient perception of bodily functions in multiple sclerosis: gait and visual function are the most valuable. Mult Scler. 2008 Aug;14(7):988-91.

The idea - Walking around App

Through the geolocation or manual input the application will identify the starting city of the MS patient / player. Depending on the initial level identified by a short quiz or tests (in a more

developed version) two or three destinations in different difficulty levels will be suggested as a

challenge for the MS patient / player. He / she can choose between an easy goal, on average or a

more difficult one, attracting achievers to play. Daily goals will be calculated and informed as well as updated when necessary, preventing the player from losing interest. The MS patient will count the steps through the app directly on the smartphone and add them in distance form to reach the main objective - the chosen city.

Page 7: Gamification proposal level 2

The idea - Walking around AppThe MS patient / player will earn experience points (XP) as he / she advances through the

tasks, counting steps and increasing the distance walked. He / she will also acquire XP to involve his

/ her friends and family in the game, making new friends in the game and collaborating with

other players making the game social and attracting socializers.

He / she can also receive help from friends, family and even other players as well as help other patients by donating extra steps to them, in a collaborative environment. This assistance will be limited to a value that does not address most of the challenge, but still has an important place in the achievement of the goal.

According to the patient / player advancement throughout his / her journey, he / she will receive tips, curious facts and information about the chosen city, collect evolutionary badges and

receive surprise badges when performing specific activities such as donating steps to other players or having had a more active day with few long pauses.

The idea - Walking around App

Another purpose of the game is to collect the stamps of the cities visited, as in a rally or a long

trip. Whenever the MS patient/ player arrives in a city, he / she will receive a special local stamp and may choose another challenge, another city to go to from the city where he

arrived virtually - creating an ability of going around to the world and getting information

about several different cities. Thus the explorer players will feel good to participate in the

initiative and everyone will be able to show and share achievements and demonstrate their

status.

With the achievements and helping the other players, the MS patient / player will unlock new

cities, new challenges, increasing access in the game. As he / she goes mastering the

challenges, he / she can win powers such as creating some tips about his / her hometown.

The journey - Walking around App

Patient log into the App and by geolocation it finds his city.

Two or three cities nearby will appear for the challenge.

Patient chooses one of them.

The distance and how many days are expected to reach the city chosen are informed.

Patient accepts the challenge.

The daily steps will be counted from the smartphone and added to the challenge in distance.

Friends and Family can give a "ride". They can sum their steps to the patient challenge,

make him achieve the city earlier. *Just a small but important distance can be fullfiled

by Friends and Family.

Patient arrives at the city and receives a "stamp" and can choose another city to go.

A video of the city will also be provided.

First of all, a questionary will be handled to classify the patient.
