GATHERING WITH PRAISE PRELUDE Alejandro Alumbreros

FIRST THOUGHT The desert always waits, ready to let us know who we are—the place of self discovery. and whilst we fear, and rightly, the loneliness and emptiness and harshness, we forget the angels, whom we cannot see for our blindness, but who come when God decides that we need their help; when we are ready for what they can give us. Ruth Burgess, “Bread of Tomorrow” One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. CALL TO WORSHIP Leader : We begin our Lenten journey People : God, walk with us through these days as You walked with Jesus Leader : Through the uncomfortable places we journey People : Give us the same courage and strength that You gave to Jesus Leader : As Jesus faced temptation, hunger and doubt People : Reassure us that You will be with us when we face the same doubts and temptations. Leader : Led to this place, we worship You and find in You strength for the journey *HYMN “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” [171] *PRAYER OF THE DAY WELCOME CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Zachary Vollman Gracious and merciful God, we avoid the wilderness places of life for fear of having to face our true selves. We confess that we seek after the things of this world, more than we seek after You. We confess we have used the gifts You have given for the benefit of ourselves rather than in service to others. Our hunger for power and wealth has motivated us more than our hunger for doing what is right and good. We have tried to manipulate You into doing what we want and failed to trust that You know what is best. God, forgive us and make us more like Jesus so that we may be humble, strong and trusting of You. Amen (Let us continue to pray in silence.)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

One: Friends, hear the good news of the Gospel. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven *ACT OF PRAISE “Fight the Good Fight” (307, v.2)

Run the straight race through God’s good grace, Lift up thine eyes, and seek Christ’s face;

Life with its way before us lies, Christ is the path and Christ the prize
