Bart's Pantry is an outreach ministry of Our Lady of

Perpetual Help Church in Oakland NJ. It is supported

mainly by parishioners who volunteer not only food, but

their time each month to help assist the food pantries of

St. Mary's Church in Newark NJ, Our Lady Help of

Christians in East Orange NJ, plus those in need in our

local community.

On the Saturday after the third Sunday of each month,

one of our three teams of volunteers load up their cars

with food donated by our parishioners and deliver it to one

of the food pantries mentioned above.

Due to state budget cuts, the pantries we support have

lost most of the subsidies they use to receive, and now

depend mainly on donations from ministries like Bart’s

Pantry to keep their food shelves full.

Our ministry does not collect enough food each month to

fully support the pantries of St Mary’s, Our Lady Help of

Christians plus those in our community. We must

alternate each month who receives the food donated.

In May 2013, we started a program called

Change For A Change and put a donation box in the back

of the church so people can donate their spare change.

This allows us to purchase a small amount of needed

items to go with what is donated to our shelves.

This October, our towns farmer’s market allowed us to be

the charity of the week, where we set up a table to collect

food and monetary donations which also allowed us to

bring awareness to our ministry. We are also doing food

drives with local businesses and youth sports leagues to

help raise awareness and monthly donations.

Even with all we are doing, we just don’t have enough

food and monetary donations to fully support both

pantries each month which is why we alternate.

Our ultimate goal is to collect enough food and or

monetary donations each month so we are able to help

out St. Mary's, Our Lady Help of Christians and our local

residents without having to alternate each month.

What ever money received would be divided by 12 to

allow us to purchase the most needed items for each

pantry every month for a year. Each month’s monies

would be divided into three separate shares. One-third for

St. Mary’s in Newark NJ, one-third for Our Lady Help of

Christians in East Orange NJ, and the remaining third

would be used to purchase shop-rite gift cards to assist

local families who come to the church for assistance.
