Really Lord? Really!

St. Paul writes, “Endure your trials as ‘discipline’…Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be disjointed but healed” (Hb 12: 7, 12). As we all know trials do make us lame, disjointed and confuse the heart, mind and soul. It might be an illness, handicap or trouble. It might be a hard week. It might be family stuff. It might be some personal shortcomings. But, endure? Really Lord? Really! The reality is that God does allow evil, if we choose or others choose. Sometimes bad things just happen. St. Paul says that it feels like a trial, we think we are being disci-plined. The truth is that God doesn’t cause the trial or difficulty, but He is using the difficult situation to bring about a better good; to make straight paths for each of us. Unfortunately our instinct is to rebel, the Lord’s gate is too narrow and we start looking for shortcuts: prayer suffers; attitudes are more stubborn; limitations harder to accept; letting go feels impossi-ble. Today, God is reminding us that there are no shortcuts; His will dur-ing trials and difficulties is a narrow gate. God constantly arms us to re-sist those temptations and “make straight paths” for our feet. This means that when we all of a sudden realize that we are in the middle of a trial to stop and look around – where are the blessings, where are God’s graces, where are the angels of God slowly directing us? Because behind every tribulation is God’s wisdom and love. Let us promise Him this week, that there are no shortcuts. We must look for His grace. Stewardship Thought

Today’s reading from Isaiah describes the Israelites bringing their offering to the Lord “in clean vessels.” The gift of myself — my patient endurance and fideli-ty to the will of God — is as important as the mone-tary gift I offer. See Isaiah 66:20

Please remember in your daily prayers the sick and suffer-ing of our parish family.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

August 21, 2016 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

This Jubilee Year of Mercy and Pope Francis’ ministry have renewed our understanding

that the Church’s heart is

open wide to all, and the heart of the gospel is God’s mercy. Flooded with God’s mercy,

our hearts should overflow as channels bringing to wounded and weary

hearts Jesus’ healing mercy. For Jesus warns, our own sal-vation is not guaranteed by the Liturgy of the Word (“you

taught in our streets”) nor by the Eucharist (“we ate and

drank in your company”) (Luke 13:26). People far from that banquet, “from the east and the west and from the north

and the south . . . will recline at table in the kingdom of God” (13:29). Rather, showing mercy is key to obtaining

mercy ourselves (Matthew 5:7). So we should never dare

ask what “someone” asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” (Luke 13:23).

The crucial question is “Will I be saved?” And Jesus’ answer is another question: “Have you shown mercy to everyone,

freely, gladly, no limits, no conditions, no exceptions?” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Watch Your Giving Grow as You Help Us Grow Our Min-istry! If you give through Online Giv-ing—our secure giving pro-gram, accessible from the

church website www.stjudepearl.org or the St. Jude Parish App—you can watch your giving grow this sea-son… and throughout the year! When you create a login, your gift and pledge history will be stored so that you can access it at anytime. This will allow you to accurately assess how much you’re giving to what so that you can make informed decisions and plan your future gifts. It also helps us in the church office; there’s much less processing for online gifts than for envelope gifts!

TEMPTATION

The average number of times that people say “no” to temptation is about once, weakly.

Pray for Those Discerning a Religious Vocation

Quiet Prayer Before and After Mass

Fr. Jeffrey would like to encourage everyone after they come into the Church to go to a pew in prayer as they wait for Mass to begin. Instead

of visiting and talking before Mass begins, this would be espe-cially a good time to tell the Lord what you seek or pray in gratitude to the Lord for his blessings. It would also be a good time to read over the readings for the Mass. Likewise at the end of Mass, instead of dashing out as soon as Fr. Jeffrey or Fr. Joseph passes by, stop and kneel in prayer of thanksgiving. It doesn't take but a minute. Reverence in the Church is para-mount in being blessed and to being a blessing to others.

Protection of Children The Diocese of Jackson is committed to ensuring that no one being served by the church be (is) at risk of sexu-al abuse or exploitation by clergy, religious or lay church personnel. The spiritual well-being of all the victims, their families and others in the community is of particular con-cern to the church. In accordance with our policy, all victims are of-

fered counseling and pastoral care.

Anyone who has been a victim of abuse or exploitation by clergy, religious or lay church personnel and has not yet reported it is encouraged to do so. Our victim assis-tance coordinator, Valerie McClellan, a licensed social worker, is available to assist in making a report. Please contact her at 601- 326-3728.

For more information about diocesan policies and proce-dures and to learn what the diocese is doing to create a safe environment for everyone, please visit the diocesan website at www.jacksondiocese.org and click on “Protection of Children.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADI-TION In recent decades, attention has shifted away from headgear as a symbol of a bishop’s authority to a more sub-stantial symbol: the chair, called the cathedra. The word comes from the Lat-in word for a chair with armrests. It is exactly the reason why dining room sets were marketed in this country a few years ago with only one chair with arm-rests, the captain’s chair. In many rec-

tories of a certain vintage, you will see only one chair with arms at the dining table, a sign to the assisting priests of their proper place in the constellation. For us, as with most Anglicans and some Lutherans, the cathe-dra is a sign of the teaching authority of the bishop. We inherited the symbolism of the chair from Roman civil life in the fourth century. A church that houses a cathe-dra is called a cathedral, and the chair may be used only by the bishop of that diocese. Priests who preside at liturgy there must use a different presidential chair. You may find the cathedra in its most traditional place at the head of the apse, or against a side wall as was favored in medieval times. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Pray It!!! Prayer for a Virtuous Life

Good and gracious God,

When I feel the lure of excess and crave too much of a good thing, help me to develop temperance, the self-

control that gives my life balance and wholeness

When I feel driven to act on impulse, give me prudence, the wisdom to stop and think before I act.

When I find that I am preoccupied with myself, my own wants and worries, help me to see others with eyes of

compassion and to reach out to them with loving justice.

When I face obstacles to living morally that tempt me to move away from you, give me fortitude, the courage to

overcome the temptation.

Amen. (The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth)

FALL ADULT FAITH FORMATION SESSIONS Being Catholic takes more than simply believing in God or doing what he asks of us. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer—he wants you to be his disciple and friend. To help you answer this call to deeper friendship with Christ, St. Jude will begin Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John on Sunday, September 11 at 9:45 am. For more information contact Deacon John McGregor. You will not only benefit personally from being part of this sturdy; you will also help us to grow in fellowship as a parish as we grow closer in Christ together. Follow Me invites you to experience the joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. You will learn what it takes to follow him. You will experience the joy of divine friendship, and you will see how God—and only God—can satisfy the deepest desires of your heart. Participants of Follow Me will be able to purchase a workbook for $15 and will meet every week to view an engaging video presentation followed by a time of lively group discussion and fellowship. The eight 30-minute videos, presented by Dr. Edward Sri, will guide you through the Gospel of John. Dr. Sri will explain how Christ’s encounters with others in the Gospel are examples of how he lovingly and persistently calls each of us to a more intimate and life-changing relationship with him.
