TD BANK AFFINITY PROGRAM

This past week Mr. John Spagnuolo, parishioner and local TD Bank branch manager, presented a check to the parish for $4,693.70. This check was made possible through a program where one simp-ly names Saint Helen as a beneficiary to a bonus based on the sum total of those who are associat-ed to Saint Helen Parish. It costs nothing for the customer, but as you can see benefits the parish greatly. Thank you for your participation in this pro-gram, and please contact Mr. John Spagnuolo, at TD Bank on Crossbay Blvd., for information on how to participate in this program.

Mon., June 13: 1 Kings 21:1-16; Matt 5:38-42 Memorial of Anthony of Padua I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. Today’s Gospel message seems to counter many messages we hear in campaign platforms that pro-pose to eliminate “evil” with more guns and military might. The Gospel isn’t calling us to be submissive door-

mats for those who wish to harm us, but to resist return-ing evil and violence with violent revenge. Many great leaders like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. have called for calm resistance as a means to achieve reforms and changed attitudes. Angry retaliation begets more vio-lence, while mercy, Jesus teaches, has a greater chance of healing the root of violence. In this year of discerning future leaders, O Lord, may we hear their words through your call to be merciful. Tues., June 14: 1 Kings 21:17-29; Matt 5:43-48 Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect. When learning new behaviors, we are often advised to start with small, reachable goals. Lofty goals can overwhelm us into giving up before we begin. Being a disciple is no different. It’s always easier to forgive people of whom we approve than those who annoy us or disagree with our values. Forgiveness is easier in theory than in practice, so when Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel asks us to “be perfect” in forgiveness, our modern sensibilities hear an unreach-able goal. In Luke’s Gospel, however, we are called to “be merciful as your Father is merciful.” This seems a more doable invitation to ongoing and incremental growth. It tells me that God is looking for committed effort, not instant sainthood. Thank you for your pa-tience, Lord. I know I’m a work in progress. Wed., June 15: 2 Kings 2:1, 6-14; Matt 6:1-6, 16-18 Your Father who sees in secret will repay you. We hear this Gospel reading every year when we begin our Len-ten renewal on Ash Wednesday. At this time of year, however, I find myself hearing it differently. If God of-fered me my deepest desires, and those desires would not be discernible by others or influence their opinion of me, for what would I ask? Would I wish to have “a double portion of spirit” like Elisha, or “wisdom” like Solomon? Who would I choose to become if changes in my charac-ter would be known or acknowledged only by our “Father in secret”? It was a tougher question than I would have anticipated. In my efforts to do your will, O Lord, may I begin with an honest desire to be who you created me to be.

Thurs., June 16: Sir 48:1-14; Matt 6:7-15

In praying, do not babble like the pagans,

who think they will be heard because of their many words. I still remember the shock of seeing red ink scrawled across the pages of a first-year university essay I got back from the professor. One notation has stayed with me: “Mean what you say, and say what you mean!” It’s a sentiment I need to remember in my prayer life, too. My scattered mind can be filled with mundane chores while I am reciting familiar prayers. Even the sign of the cross can become meaningless “fly swatting” if my mind is not engaged. Like any relationship of worth, our conversations with God need not be long or wordy, but do deserve our full attention. When my mind is busy, Lord, may I first rest with you in silence. Fri., June 17: 2 Kings 11:1-4, 9-18, 20; Matt 6:19-23 Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. My parents immigrated to Canada soon after World War II with few possessions. Through hard work and many sac-rifices, they were able to provide a safe and enriched life for their five children. Woven throughout their daily struggles was a deep faith and a committed prayer life. They were able to find God’s presence even in the most menial tasks of their daily life. Their trust in God’s grace and goodness were far more valuable to them than any physical comforts they may have acquired. It also al-lowed them to be generous with their physical posses-sions when they felt others had greater need of them than they did. Help us to live more simply, Lord, and to share generously of everything with which you have blessed us. Sat., June 18: 2 Chr 24:17-25; Matt 6:24-34 Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil. I doubt to-day’s reading is telling us to always live by the “Don’t worry! Be happy!” motto. When there is legitimate cause to be concerned and we’re able to do something to allevi-ate those concerns, then we should act. Unfortunately, we often waste a great deal of energy and sleep over things we cannot control. We spend so much attention on wor-rying about possible “what if” scenarios that we fail to recognize and enjoy the gifts of God’s grace in front of us today. Do what you can today, Jesus invites us, and leave tomorrow’s “what ifs” in God’s capable hands. Lord, give us courage to do what needs doing today and leave tomorrow’s uncertainty to you.
