If you are buying an aboveground pool,you, your family & friends will enjoy coun-tless hours of fun, games & exercise thisswim season, and for years to come. Inorder to help you select the abovegroundswimming pool that will be perfect for yourfamily, your backyard & your budget, we'dlike to offer a few planning suggestions -things to consider as you shop. If you haveany questions about the information below,please feel free to contact your abovegroundpool experts for professional answers and advice.

BudgetAboveground swimming pools are a greatvalue, and can be significantly less expen-sive than an inground pool of the same size.It's still important however, to have a budgetin mind as you shop. Consider not only thecost of the swimming pool itself, but alsothe products you'll need in order to startswimming and enjoying your new pool -and then shop within that budget. In addi-tion to the swimming pool, you will need avinyl liner, a pump & filter system, a skim-mer and a way to enter and exit your pool -either a ladder or set of steps.

Yard SpaceThe next thing to consider after budget isthe amount of available space in yourbackyard for a new aboveground pool.Make sure that the pool you choose is ap-propriately sized in relation to the overallyard - including landscaping, existingdecking, driveway, fencing and other per-manent features or obstructions. Considerthe specific location within your yard foryour pool too... don't make a hasty decision,plan it out so your pool is convenient andeasy to use. Go out to your backyard with ameasuring tape and either stakes & string orspray paint - measure out the pool dimen-sions and mark the area where you'd like theswimming pool to be located.

Style & ShapeIn addition to the amount of yard space yournew aboveground pool will take up, youshould also think about how you and yourfamily will use your new pool. For exam-ple, is a 48" side wall sufficient for yourneeds, or should you consider an extra-deep54" style? Are your swimmers experiencedor novice? Will they mainly splash & jump(in which case a round pool might be suffi-cient) or do you intend to use the pool forwater games or exercise (in which case anoval shape might be preferred). Will yournew pool attach to a deck or platform, or befree-standing? This will impact the type ofstyle of ladder and/or steps you will need.

Power SourceYour swimming pool will require access toelectricity, to power the pump & filter sys-tem, plus lighting and other optional equip-ment you may want to include. Werecommend you run a new, dedicated 110Velectrical line for your pool, and trench itunderground (add the cost of this to yourpool budget in these cases). This is also agreat time to consider whether your poolwill (either now or in the future) include aheater or heat pump. Warmer water will notonly extend the length of your swim season,but will also let you enjoy more nighttimeswims too. Heaters and heat pumps are ty-pically powered by propane or natural gas,but there are also units available that run onelectricity or heating oil.

Pool WaterYou'll need to think about where the waterwill come from that you use to fill ourswimming pool. In most locations, you cansimply use your existing water supply andfill the pool using a standard garden hose.If your pool is located in a remote area (inrelation to the hose), if you have well wateror simply do not want to use "tap water" tofill your pool, you can contract with a watersupply company to truck in water for yourpool.

Verify all municipality, requirements beforeyou select and install your new above-ground pool. A little advance planningcould save you from a hefty fine - or worse,having to re-install a finished abovegroundpool.

Size IS Important!


When we're talking about building theperfect dog house.

For a decade my hubby and I lived up in

isolation in the arctic, we built countless

dog houses and secretly placed them in the

backyards of local dog custodians who did-

n't realize (or care) that their non-Nordic

breeds would quickly freeze to death in -80

temps without the extra protection. Over the

course of those years, we managed to fine-

tune the details and create, "The Perfect

Dog House."

Granted, our local temperatures here, may

never get to the extremes of the high arctic.

Still, if your dog spends any significant

amount of time outside when it is conven-

ient for all parties to have a little 'me' time,

it is appropriate for him to have a comfort-

able, little 'getaway' place to call his own.

While some people may think 'bigger is

better' this rule does not apply to dog

houses, especially in colder weather. The

dog needs to be able to generate enough

heat to keep himself warm and he cannot do

this if there is too much space in there for

him to heat.

However, he'll need a little extra room in

there in the heat of the summertime so as

not to overheat.

When is too small, too small?If you hear your dog's head go 'thud-thud'

against the back wall of his dog house while

seeing your dog's butt, jutting out of its front

entry, even if his tail is wagging, It's too

small!

If he has to crouch down and squeeze

himself into it, reminding you of trying to

fit a marshmallow into a keyhole, it's too

small!

After getting into it, if he stands up and

walks away wearing it like Genghis Khan

going off to war, it's too small!

When is too big, too big?You'll know it's too big if while inside,

your dog can actually stand up on its hind

legs and dance a jig.

You'll know it's too big when you look in-

side and find him in there with all his bud-

So Goldilocks, when is size 'just perfect'?

You'll know it's the perfect size when,

your dog can enter it with two inches to

spare on all sides.

You'll know it's the perfect size when,

your dog will be able to circle three times

inside of it and lay down without any dis-

comfort (even if he's just eaten a big meal) .

You'll know it's the perfect size when, you

have taken the 'two inch' rule to heart. Your

dog must have a clearance of two inches

above his ears when he enters as well as two

extra inches on each side of him. Any less

than that and it will simply be too small and

uncomfortable for him especially as he ages

and can't make those tight turns anymore.

So how do we know how much space he'll

need inside his dog house? Simple! Meas-

ure your dog.

Pick a time when he's lying down on the

floor or on his bed, and just measure a "+"

over him. Then add two inches a piece. That

takes care of length and width.

For height: Get your tape measure, have

someone hold him while he stands and

measure from the floor to the top of his ears.

Then add two inches.

Be sure to make the roof of the dog house

flat and on a slight slant. Dog's love the op-

tion of being able to sleep either in or on top

of their house. The slight slant keeps rain

from pooling on top. Adding a hinge to the

roof will make cleaning it out a breeze.

Double walls with insulation will keep him

warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Ensure the house is raised off of the ground

by placing it on bricks or wood. This allows

a couple of inches of air space underneath to

discourage rot and for extra insulation.

It doesn't take a 'village to raise a dog

house', but getting the kids involved is a fun

way of having them learn a little responsi-

bility and respect for all life, as well as com-

passion in doing a good thing for a

cherished family member.
