A Brief History Of

St. Valentine's Day.

Every February 14th, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and

why do we celebrate this day?

It began in Rome, when the Emperor, Claudius II, was involved in

many bloody and unpopular campaigns. “Claudius the Cruel” as he

was called, was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his mi-

litary leagues. He believed that the reason was that Roman men did

not want to leave their loves or families. So he cancelled all mar-

riages and engagements in Rome! The good Saint Valentine, who

was a priest in Rome, in the year 269 A.D., together with his friend

Saint Marius, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages

for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discove-

red, he was sentenced to be beaten to death with clubs and to have

his head cut off. But while in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell

in love with a young girl, who may have been his jailer's daughter,

who visited him during his confinement. Before his death on the

14th day of February, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which

he signed “From your Valentin”

In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor

St. Valentine.

Emission testing has always been that daunting,anxiety filled time when we do not know whether a go-vernment regulated test will cost us $35 or $450.. I’m hoping after reading this article that you will havemore confidence in emission testing and preventiveknowledge to give you the best possible chance on pas-sing.

Emission testing was introduced into some parts ofOntario by the Driveclean program, which is run bythe government of Ontario. Emission testing is onlytargeted at highly populated areas, which happens tobe almost the entire border line between Ontario andthe USA. Their goal was to eliminate highly pollutantvehicles off the road that are causing environmentalconcerns as well as health concerns. Most of us are fa-miliar with the old emission testing way where a sim-ple probe was placed in the tail pipe and actually tookmeasurements of how pollutant our car was.

NOW we have a new testing procedure. Tail pipe emis-sions are not measured anymore on most vehiclesnewer then 1998. The test actually consists of connec-ting a computer system (PCM) to your car and lookingto see if there are any emission related engine codesAKA checking to see if your check engine light is on.Almost everything to do with your car can affect emis-sions, so if your engine light is on the probability of afail is very high. Check engine light failure is not theonly worry, as you can also have a “NOT READY”

fail. When your test result says NOT READY, thatmeans that your car’s computer has not completed itsown diagnostic “self check”. Some of the things yourcomputer is checking in your car is, misfiring (enginerunning rough), oxygen sensors (fuel consumption),catalyst converter (tail pipe emissions), EVAP (gascap/ fuel vapours) ext..

To make sure your vehicle is emission test ready, thereare a couple of recommendations. For these proceduresto work they must be followed one after another wi-thout pause. Generic Drive Cycle: 1. Ensure that thefuel tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full. 2. Start cold(below 60°c /Above6°C) and warm up untilengine coolant tempe-rature is at least 160° F(typically requires 2 ½minutes). 3. Accelerateto 60-90 Km/h at 1/4throttle and maintainspeed for five minutes.4. Decelerate withoutusing the brake (coastdown) to 30 Km/h orless, then stop the vehi-cle. Allow the engine toidle for 10 seconds,turn the key off, andwait one minute. 5. Re-

start and accelerate to 60-90 Km/h at 1/4 throttle andmaintain speed for two minutes. 6. Decelerate withusing the brake (or the clutch) by coasting down to 30Km/h , then stop the vehicle. Allow the engine to idlefor 10 seconds, turn the key off, and wait one minute.This procedure is crucial if your computer’s memoryhas been wiped, by either someone clearing the code oreven your battery dying. Keep in mind this procedureis very generic, as there are specific procedures foreach manufacturer.
