Fear of ThunderstormsIs There Hope?(part 2)If your pet is affected by thunderstorm/noise phobia, he is desperately trying to es-cape to a spot where ideally, he won't seethe lightning flashes, or hear the ear pierc-ing cracks of thunder (or fireworks). A roomwithout windows, or one where you canclose the blinds or even temporarily coverthem, would do well. Also, make it a placewhere he cannot hear the thunder as loudly.Perhaps a downstairs room, like a base-ment, a den, or second bathroom. If youdon't have a downstairs, then a bedroomcloset would do nicely. If you can, place hiscrate there. Cover it, if it is an open wirecrate. Throw in some blankets he can reallyburrow into. He wants to feel protected, es-pecially from above. You could even use anappropriately sized, cardboard box placedon its side to create a covered, roof effect.Never lock him in there during a storm. De-pending on the severity of his phobia, somepets need to feel they can still escape to an-other place (inside the house only!) Somewill need to pace, hide under the bed or sitpressed up against you to gain relief. Besupportive, remain calm.

Add 4 ouncesof good water, and empty one dropper fullof the Rescue Remedy into it. Shake. Thor-oughly mist the air just above your pet, donot spray it directly at him as he may thinkyou are punishing him. Use at the first signof discomfort and repeat misting above himevery few minutes as needed until your petcalms down.

While most think of their dog's storm pho-bia, other pets can be affected as well. How-ever, if your cat is affected, she may find her'safe place' and be hidden away long beforethe storm has even arrived! However if youdo see her in distress, please go ahead andutilize any of the measures in this article. Ifyour pet is a bird, rabbit or hamster, the leastyou can do is move her cage away from thewindow and cover it. You can also freelyuse alcohol-free flower essences.

'Storm phobia' is progressive. Meaning ifyou don't help your pet as soon as he startsexhibiting signs of fear, he will get worse astime goes on... Deal with it now. Punishingor yelling at your dog, will only make itworse for him and for you. Remember,helping your pet, is at the same time, helping you!
