SKYCITY TRIPLE CROWNEvent 6 of 14

ORRCON Steel-backed FPR driver Mark Winterbottom ended the SKYCITY Triple Crown on a high with a third place podium finish in the final race of the event.Winterbottom came out strong in both qualifying sessions, where he secured pole position for the two races, however after dominating Saturday’s race he finished a disappointing 15th.After leading for the first 36 laps, a safety car with only six laps to go proved critical.Winterbottom was involved in a chaotic restart, which saw him become a key player in the controversial incident where four cars tried to enter the first corner at the same time. All of the top four contenders dramatically speared off at turn one. A post race stewards hearing handed both Winterbottom and Championship leader, Jamie Whincup a 25 point penalty for their part in the incident. Will Davison – in the Orrcon Steel-

backed #6 Trading Post Falcon – was able to capitalise on the chaos that ensued and moved up through the field to finish in 5th place despite starting in 20th after a disappointing qualifying session. On Sunday, Winterbottom starting from pole got away well, however drifted behind those that elected to start on soft tyres. The Orrcon Steel-backed FPR team left him out as long as possible and pitted with 23 laps remaining to fit the softer Dunlops. Ultimately, Winterbottom finished third behind Shane van Gisbergen and Craig Lowndes, whose cars were working the soft tyres less hard than the FPR Falcon.Davison’s tactic to switch to soft tyres later in the race than any other driver was impeded by the arrival of the safety car, however he still managed to place in 7th position.“It is our first podium on the soft tyre this year – I’ve almost forgotten what its like to be up here!” Winterbottom said.

Winterbottom and Orrcon’s team of Steel are taking the Darwin round as a positive for the season and as a glimpse of what’s to come.“Yesterday was obviously very disappointing – but we got two pole positions for the weekend, which is a great achievement in itself,” he said.“I’ve got a podium and some confidence behind me now, so we can’t wait for Townsville!”Whilst the team admits there is still a lot of development to come on the soft tyre, with hard tyres dominating the back end of the season - and the V8 Supercars season of endurance, there is just cause for optimism in the camp. Both Winterbottom and Davison have made placings in the Championship chase and are in there boxing with the inconsistency that is befalling the top runners in the Championship this year. The next round of V8 Supercar action will be in Townsville from July 8 – 10.

FROSTY’S DRIVING FORCEHe desperately wants to talk to his mother, the woman who launched his career when she bought a winning raffle ticket for a motorcycle.“Those moments when you wake up and think she is still here are the worst,” Winterbottom said.“You think that you’re just having a bad dream and then you come to the realisation that it isn’t, that she really isn’t here anymore.”It is a testament to June’s strength and courage that she made it as far as she did.She was a true battler who refused to give up. In 1985, doctors diagnosed June with cancer and said she had two years, at best, to live.In the years that followed she fought lung and liver cancer, went through countless bouts of chemotherapy. “She was a real fighter,” Winterbottom said.“And it was amazing to see. She probably shouldn’t have made it as far as she did, but I know she was hanging on to see the birth of my son Oliver.“She got to do that and then it was all pretty quick from there.”June was always proud of her son, who has achieved more than most - but there is one final gift Winterbottom wants to give her.“She always told me that she wanted to see me win a championship,” he said.“I am pretty upset that I wasn’t able to do that for her. But the first one will be for her, dedicated to my mother and her memory. And I reckon she will be able to see it. I know she is still here in one way or another. It’s just that I don’t get to talk to her anymore.”

MARK Winterbottom slapped hands with all the kids as he walked the red carpet for the premiere of Cars 2.The V8 Supercars driver has his own character in the Disney animation film, to be released this week. But underneath the trademark grin was a shattered man. Winterbottom’s mother June, his hero and the woman that worked countless jobs to give him his career, passed away this month after a long battle with cancer.Amid the red carpet glitz and glamour, the man known as Frosty couldn’t help but think of his mum.“It was something she really wanted to see,” Winter-bottom said.“She was excited about it and was hoping to make it, but she lost her fight the week before. Maybe knowing it was near the end, I was able to get a little printout of Frosty the car. I was able to take that to her and show her before she passed away.”June Winterbottom has always been her son’s in-spiration. A courageous woman, she gave her son everything she had to help him live out his ambitious and expensive dream to drive racing cars.“We never had money,” said Winterbottom, who drives for Ford Performance Racing. “But that didn’t stop her from giving me what I had to have.“She would go out and work and put the money into my career. We lived at Doonside, I guess a pretty poor suburb, and I know Mum’s dream was to leave and go and live at a better address.“She never got to do that, she died there. I kind of think that maybe it was because she put so much into me.”At night, Winterbottom wakes up hoping that it is all just a dream.

The below article by James Phelps appeared in The Sunday Telegraph last weekend to coincide with the SKYCITY Triple Crown in Darwin, chronicling what is driving Mark Winterbottom towards success in 2011.

Northern Territory’s biggest annual event. It’s one of the favourites among V8 Supercar teams - and

‘MEET’ FROSTY - THE MOVIE STAR!Mark Winterbottom makes his big screen debut this week as part of the cast of Disney.Pixar’s Cars 2. The long-awaited sequel sees Lightning McQueen and Mater take on some of the world’s most iconic cities, culminating in the World Grand Prix. Disney.Pixar have taken a unique approach with the new movie, regionalising characters, hence the inclusion of Mark Winterbottom and the Australian themed character for Australasia. Either way, Mark appears alongside the likes of Sir Michael Caine, Lewis Hamilton, Owen Wilson and Larry The Cable Guy! Pretty cool deal if you ask us!
