Mark Winterbottom insists that the Championship for the Orrcon Steel-backed Ford Performance Racing team is not over, despite a lowly finish in Sunday’s second race at Winton Motor Raceway. The weekend had all the elements to produce a solid result for both Winterbottom and Davison - testing the week before had been exceptional and the pace on Friday suggested better things were to come once the weekend hit.The team was further boosted on Sunday when Winterbottom secured the 18th pole position of his career in the dying moments of the qualifying session.Nevertheless, that is where the positives on track ended.Winterbottom’s #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon was able to produce pace over a single lap, however when that was taken over a 20 lap stint, the car had a distinct lack of speed. This was exacerbated by the longer race on Sunday and the

well-documented issues that FPR have had with front-end turn in with the softer Dunlop.Saturday was a good day for Winterbottom, finishing with a solid top 10 finish. His race - over 40 laps - featured a good dice with team-mate Will Davison - which had hearts in the mouths of the FPR team.Davison’s weekend was difficult to say the least.Friday, the team couldn’t find a setup that the 28-year-old was happy with.On Saturday, his tyres ‘fell off the cliff’ late in the race and he drifted back to 13th after a strong showing early. On Sunday, the team elected to stick with the experimental setup they tried on Saturday and the Trading Post machine just didn’t like it.Davison admitted they were looking to head in the more conventional direction that worked for Paul Dumbrell (FPR sister car) on Saturday. The Dumbrell

direction was adopted by Winterbottom for Sunday’s qualifying, which clearly worked. The team made some radical changes to the Davison car ahead of the 67-lap encounter, however he didn’t get the opportunity to utilise the changes. He was turned around on the third lap by Lee Holdsworth, which then caused a freight train of cars led by Todd Kelly to slam into the stricken Trading Post machine. After several laps in the pits to repair damage, Davison re-joined the fray - hoping to capitalise on others’ misfortunes. With a surprisingly small attrition rate for the encounter, he was unable to make any further positions and was classified 24th.With a few weeks between now and Darwin, the team will be working feverishly on getting the Championship assault back on track.Something both drivers are keen to do.

Sunday’s pole position brought a smile to Frosty’s face. It was a solid way to begin the day and pointed towards what promised to be a turnaround for the Orrcon Steel-backed FPR team.

Will Davison’s progress in the Orrcon Steel-backed #6 Trading Post Falcon was hampered by inexplicable problems. He was confident that come Sunday he could make ground from his 14th starting position, but didn’t get the chance - wiped out in a lap 3 incident that cost Lee Holdsworth 25 Championship points.

Winton was 10-week old Olive r Winterbottom’s first ever race meeting. It was also the first event that new mum, Renee attended in 2011.

“He usually falls asleep when the races are on TV, but it’s great to have him up here with us this weekend and seeing it first hand,” said Dad, Mark!

Creating a double celebration, Friday at Winton was Frosty’s 30th birthday. The FPR team took time out from their busy preparations to share some chocolate cake and wish the ‘old boy’ all the best!

TALK ABOUT CONTRAST...With a cold Winton Motor Raceway out of the way, teams head north to the tropics of Darwin. Many drivers utilise the break before the Darwin race as a time to escape the winter that has engulfed much of the country and relax in the 30-degree plus temperatures that abound in Northern Territory. There is one word that describes Darwin - unique - and it is this that draws many V8 Supercar devotees to this event. It’s also considered one of the more fun events on the V8 Supercars tour.
