‘BRING ON THE ENDUROS’The endurance races cannot come quick enough for the Orrcon Steel Ford Performance Racing team after a troubled weekend at the Coates Hire Ipswich 300.The highlight of the weekend for the team was a top 10 finish in Saturday’s second race for Mark Winterbottom. The team has struggled on the softer Dunlop tyre all year long and Queensland Raceway was no exception to that – the problem exacerbated by the entire weekend’s racing being on the soft tyre. The new format adopted for Saturday, which included a ‘half time’ break of 15 minutes between the two races provided a huge challenge for the team, with little time to effect meaningful change on the cars. The changes that were made saw improvement, with Mark Winterbottom entering the top 10.The V8 Supercars field is at its tightest ever at the moment –

testament to that is the spread between first and last in Sunday’s qualifying session was just 0.92 of a second. Will Davison came in 10th after being on track for a higher finish, whilst Mark Winterbottom was 20th at the end of the 20 minute session. In the race, neither driver was able to make forward progress. After being shuffled wide at the start, Davison was looking relatively strong until a problem in his pitstop saw the old front tyres re-bolted onto the car. This severely hampered his second stint and he wasn’t able to forge ahead.Nevertheless, FPR have proven to be one of the fastest teams throughout 2011 on hard tyres and traditionally have performed well at both Phillip Island and Bathurst. The team will be joined by experienced drivers – Steven Richards and Luke Youlden – both of whom have proved competitive during the co-driver sessions at V8 Supercar events during 2011.

Mark Roworth heads up the commercial operations of the Orrcon Steel Ford Performance Racing team. His role is to manage the suite of sponsors that the factory Ford team has on board – and their requests. With many sponsors having many different objectives throughout their individual programs – it’s a challenging role to say the least.Underneath Mark in the Commercial team sit two brand managers – and also the team’s Communications Manager.Whilst at Miedecke Motorsport in the late 80’s – he formed an enduring partnership with the Stone Brothers. Following on from consulting to the ex-pat Kiwis on the side

of his roles in corporate Australia, he was then appointed full-time Commercial Manager to take the team to a new level and become a Championship contender. Within this time, he assisted late Ford Racing Australia boss, Howard Marsden in recruiting a young Mark Winterbottom. After winning Championships with Marcos Ambrose, Roworth left motorsport to continue in corporate roles. He was lured back to the sport in 2008 to Ford Performance Racing and hooked up with Winterbottom again. He remains in the role to this day.

Orrcon Steel has been recognised among Australia’s most innovative organisations, winning the Australian Business Award for Best Software Product in the 2011 Awards. The software awarded was the Section Translation Guide (STG) www.sectiontranslation.com.au an internet based soft-ware.

The Australian Business Award for Best Software Product recognises software products that dem-onstrate product superiority offering a point of difference from their competitors. This includes operating systems, development tools, applications and utilities.

Commenting on the award, Managing Director for Orrcon Steel Mr Leon Andrewartha said: “This award shows Orrcon Steel is very competent technically and reinforces our commitment to research and development. This innovative approach in support of Australian design technology is just a part of our efforts to enable our customers to improve their energy efficiency and reduce the level of green house gases” said Leon.

Dario Beccia – Senior Project Engineer with Orrcon Steel, has guided the development of this Aus-tralian first, internet based service.

“The STG will allow structural design engineers and architects to assess the use of hollow sec-tions to replace open sections with just a click of a mouse - providing numerous benefits on top of the simplicity of choice. The STG is a free resource to industry, which will introduce more structural designers to Orrcon Steel” said Dario.

Now in its sixth year, the Australian Business Awards program recognises organisations that dem-onstrate the core values of business excellence, product excellence, corporate responsibility, sustainability and commercial success in their respective industries. Each one of the 15 circuits the Orrcon Steel FPR team visits presents a different challenge, as every garage setup is unique. At Queensland Raceway, the cars are housed in a different area to the pitlane, meaning the team has to effectively work out of two different spaces.Does being a member of a V8 Supercar team require flexibility? You betcha!
