Richardson anunció su retiro del gabinete del presidente electo de EE.UU. Barack Obama debido a una investigación federal que habría retrasado su confi rmación. La investigación fue con respecto a un contrato por $1.5 millones que Nuevo México concedió a CDR Financial Products Inc. de Beverly Hills, Calif.
En Ene. 13, el presidente mexicano Felipe Calderón (Hinojosa) concluyó su visita a Estados Unidos, donde se reunió con el presidente electo Obama, el presidente George W. Bush y varios miembros del Congreso en Washington, D.C. Según un comunicado de prensa de la oficina de la presidencia mexicana, la reunión de Calderón con los miembros de Congreso estuvo relacionada con cuestiones fi nancieras y las políticas de inmigración.

Richardson announced his with-drawal from U.S. President-elect Barack Obama’s cabinet because of a federal investigation that could’ve delayed his confi rmation. The inves-tigation was regarding a $1.5 million contract that New Mexico awarded to CDR Financial Products Inc. of Beverly Hills, Calif.

On Dec. 22, Mexico City became one of the few Latin American cities to approve
marriage and the adoption of children for gays and lesbians.
The city’s multiparty legislature passed the bill, which modifi ed Articles 146 and 391 of the Mexico City Civil Code. Originally, Article 146 defi ned marriage as a union among men and women.

La propuesta pasó con 39 votos a favor, 20 en contra y 5 abstenciones. Los miembros del Partido de la Revolución Democrática apoyaron la propuesta. El conservador Partido Acción Nacional se opuso.
La aprobación ocasionó reacciones mixtas entre los mexicanos. Varias iglesias expresaron su desacuerdo. El cardenal mexicano Norberto Rivera Carrera recalcó la importancia de mantener el matrimonio entre personas de sexo opuesto.
“Esta propuesta de ley es mala y pervertida”, dijo Rivera según se cita en el periódico El Universal.
Además, Rivera explicó que el matrimonio gay era una agresión en contra de la familia como una institución.
Por otro lado, los activistas gay expresaron su apoyo a la legislación. La líder activista gay Julia Klug y otros miembros de dicha comunidad pidieron a las iglesias permanecer fuera de los asuntos de gobierno.
“Ellos tienen que respetar nuestros derechos, simplemente como nosotros respetamos sus ideas y creencias”, indicó Ugo Rincón, residente de la Ciudad de México. “La Iglesia Catóica solamente apoya lo que le conviene”.
The original Article 391 stated that adoption was forbidden for people of the same sex. Now, it states that same-sex couples may adopt.
The bill passed with 39 votes in favor, 20 opposed and fi ve abstentions. Members of the Democratic Revolution Party (Partido de la Revolucion Demo-cratica in Spanish) supported the bill. The conserva-tive National Action Party (Partido Accion Nacional in Spanish) opposed it.
Approval of the bill caused mixed reactions among Mexicans. Several churches expressed their disap-proval. Mexican Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera stressed the importance of keeping marriage among people of opposite sexes.
“This bill is bad and perverted,” Rivera was quoted in the newspaper El Universal as saying.
In addition, Rivera explained that gay mar-riages are an aggression against the family as an institution.
On the other hand, gay activists expressed their support of the legislation. Gay activist leader Julia Klug and other members of the gay community asked the churches to stay out of governmental affairs.
“They have to respect our rights, (just) as we respect their ideas and beliefs,” said Ugo Rincon, a Mexico City resident. “The Catholic Church just supports what is convenient for them.”

* Si tiene frenos estándar, bombeelos suavemente. * Si tiene frenos antibloqueo (ABS), no bombee.
Aplique una presión constante a los frenos. Usted sentirá pulsasiones – eso es normal.
Si se patinan las llantas delanteras...* Quite el pie del pedal de aceleración y cambie a neutral,
pero no trate de girar el volante inmediatamente. * Conforme se deslizan las llantas hacia el lado, bajará

* Don’t pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibil-ity, and you’re likely to fi nd the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
* D o n ’ t assume your vehicle can hand le a l l condi t ions . Even four-whee l and front-wheel drive vehicles can encoun-ter trouble on winter roads.
I f y o u r rear wheels skid...
* Take your foot off the accelerator.
* Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels
are sliding left, steer left. If they’re sliding right, steer right.
* If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
* If you have standard brakes, pump them gently. * If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump
the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse - this is normal.
If your front wheels skid...* Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but
don’t try to steer immediately. * As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the
vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in “drive” or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.
If you get stuck...* Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you
in deeper. * Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to
push snow out of the way. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out. * Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels
and the underside of the car. * Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path
of the wheels, to help get traction. * Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner’s
manual fi rst - it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you’re in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

EE.UU. Sydney Harris. Él escribió: “El arrepentimiento por las cosas que hicimos puede ser suavizado con el tiempo; pero lamentarse por las cosas que no hicimos es lo que se vuelve inconsolable”.

Aunque, las investigaciones muestran que actualmente sólo 5 por ciento de nosotros logra las metas que ambiciosamente nos establecemos el 1 de enero. Los psicólogos nos dicen que, el hacer demasiadas resoluciones (casi 70% de nosotros hace más de una) y establecer metas impulsivamente sin pensarlas directamente, está detrás del desconcertador índice de fracaso de las resoluciones de Año Nuevo.
Los expertos sugieren que elijamos unas cuantas metas pequeñas signifi cativas que queramos lograr; y que seamos realistas y específicos y que las escribamos. Eso nos motivará a perseverar y nos permite elegir tareas que somos capaces de realizar y reconocer cuando hemos cumplido una meta.
Pasar más tiempo con mis hijos (o nietos, esposo, padres, hermanos, etc.), ser voluntaria y volverme ‘verde’ son demasiado amplias. Carecen de una meta específi ca a la que nos podamos enfocar. Dichos objetivos obviados pueden ser fácilmente abrumadores y evitan que identifi quemos lo que signifi ca para nosotros lograrlos y cuánto invertimos personalmente para conseguirlos.
Escribir nuestras resoluciones para que estemos claros sobre ellas y colocarlas donde podamos verlas diariamente nos ayudará a producir los resultados deseados.
“Yo pasaré X número de horas a la semana leyendo o jugando con mis hijos (o nietos, sobrinos, etc.)”. Esa es una meta pequeña y signifi cativa, capaz de producir resultados tangibles. Es más probable que nos atengamos a ella porque es agradable y el éxito desarrolla un impulso.
Otros ejemplos simples incluyen lo siguiente: “Yo seré voluntaria X horas al mes como docente en el zoológico o museo de Kansas City; o pintando o contestando teléfonos en Habitat for Humanity; o sacando a pasear perros o acompañando visitantes en un refugio de animales del área; o clasifi cando comida en Harvesters; o enseñando a alguien a leer en Literacy Kansas City”.
Otros ejemplos más incluyen: “Reciclaré el plástico, papel, aluminio, latas, vidrio y cartón. Cuando mis focos de luz incandescente se fundan, los reemplazará con los fluorescentes compactos calificados con Energy Star. Usaré un sweater extra en casa y le bajaré al termostato X grados. Reutilizará las bolsas de plástico del supermercado (o utilizaré las de tela reutilizables)”.
No cuesta nada pasar ratos de más calidad con los seres queridos y tratarlos con más cariño, jugar un papel en convertir al mundo en un lugar mejor a través de la contribución de tiempo o trabajo o ayudar a crear un medio ambiente más saludable y sostenible. Comoquiera, esto puede cambiar nuestra vida.
It’s worthwhile to recall a truism penned by the late U.S. author and syndicated columnist
Sydney Harris. He wrote, “Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable.”
Science supports Harris’s observation. Psy-chologists and cognitive researchers studying the effects of regrets and what-if thinking on people’s mental well-being and behavior have found that the paths not taken and the opportunities passed up sting the most. The precious moments with loved ones put off until it’s too late. The volunteer opportunities deferred. The little eco-friendly initiatives around the house to save energy and protect the environment that we regularly pledge to start doing next week, but haven’t yet.
For more than 4,000 years, we humans have ritualistically begun the new year with resolutions intended to improve ourselves. Research shows, though, that only 5 percent of us actually achieve the goals we ambitiously set for ourselves on Jan. 1. Making too many resolutions (almost 70 percent of us make more than one) and setting goals impulsively without thinking them through, psychologists tell us, are behind the vexingly high failure rate of New Year’s resolutions.
Experts suggest we pick a few small, meaning-ful goals we want to accomplish, be realistic and specifi c and write them down. That will motivate us to persevere and enable us to select tasks we’re capable of performing and recognize when we’ve met a goal.
Spending more time with my children (or grandchildren, spouse, parents, siblings, etc.), volunteering and going green are too broad. They lack a specifi c goal for which to aim. Such vague objectives can easily overwhelm and pre-vent us from identifying what it means to us to achieve them, how personally invested we are in succeeding.
Writing our resolutions so we’re clear about them and posting them where we can see them daily will help produce the desired outcomes.
“I will spend X number of hours a week reading or playing with my children (or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc.).” That’s a small, meaning-ful, specifi c goal capable of producing tangible results. We’re likely to stick with it because it’s enjoyable and success builds momentum.
Other examples include the following: “I will volunteer X hours a month as a docent at the Kansas City Zoo or the Kansas City Museum; or painting or answering phones at Habitat for Humanity; or walking dogs or escorting visi-tors at an area animal shelter; or sorting food at Harvesters; or teaching someone to read at Literacy Kansas City.”
Still other examples include the following: “I will recycle plastic, paper, tin, aluminum, glass and cardboard. When my incandescent light bulbs burn out, I’ll replace them with Energy Star qualifi ed compact fl uorescent bulbs. I’ll wear an extra sweater at home and lower the thermostat X degrees. I will reuse plastic grocery bags (or I will use reusable cloth bags).”
It doesn’t cost anything to spend more quality time with loved ones and treat them more lovingly, play a role in making the world a better place through contributing time or muscle or help to create a healthier, more sustainable environment. It can, however, change your life.

The prizes were announced during the foundation’s 17th annual awards luncheon, held Dec. 4 at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo. More than 900 guests attended the event, a major fund-raiser for the non-profi t foundation.
A total of $240,000 in grant money was awarded to organizations that also included Awesome Ambitions, Front Porch Alliance, Legal Aid of Western Missouri, Mother’s Refuge, Nutra-Net, Science Pioneers, Synergy Services, The Family Conservancy, Urban League of Greater Kansas City, Women’s Employment Network and YWCA of Greater Kansas City.
The foundation’s Grant Allocation Committee, compris-ing board members, selected the recipients.
“It’s a very intensive process,” said Maria Tapia-Belsito, who sits on the committee.
The grant application process opens in April, with sub-missions due in August, Tapia-Belsito said. The committee reviews the proposals and follows up with site visits in September and October. This year, the foundation received 30 applications. The winning organizations included past grant recipients.
“There are only so many (organizations) that work with women,” Tapia-Belsito said. “The good ones are successful, and we fund success.”
The results of a study completed earlier this year prompted the foundation to consider, in particular, orga-nizations serving Latinas. The report, titled “Voices From the Heart of America: Concerns, Needs, and Priority Issues Involving Women and Girls,” identifi ed the need for more services to Latinas – particu-larly in healthcare, employ-ment, and fi nance – and the challenges Latinas face.
The study’s f indings revealed that documenta-tion issues prevent some of the neediest from receiving services; inadequate public transportation limits their access to employment, edu-cation, healthcare and social
services; and there’s a dearth of media images of suc-cessful Latinas.
“Overall, the population of Latinas is underserved,” the study’s authors concluded.
The 53-page report is available in English on the foundation’s Web site at www.wfgkc.org. The foundation hopes the fi ndings will help other local agencies direct their resources, too.
This year’s designated awards focus was on agencies that help women and girls achieve fi nancial self-suffi ciency.
“Every year, we have a different focus – and this year, we made it very specifi c,” Tapia-Belsito explained. “The agencies had to show that they’re working with women and girls on fi nancial literacy and self-sustainability.”
Since 1992, the Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City has awarded more than $1.8 in grants to organiza-tions that benefi t women and girls, Tapia-Belsito said. The foundation has an endowment fund of more than $6 million and raises money through annual fund-raisers that include a golf tournament and contributions from corporations and individuals.
A $100,000 gift from civic leader and philanthropist Marjorie Powell Allen established the foundation in 1991. Powell also founded The Central Exchange, the SkillBuild-ers Fund and the Women’s Employment Network. She helped fi nance a chapel at Powell Gardens, named for her father, George Powell Sr., who donated land for the botanical gardens. She died in 1992 at age 63.

Missouri lawmakers have pre-fi led legislation that, if passed, would ease the fi nancial strain for
families struggling with a growing health problem.The measure requires health insurers to cover autism
diagnosis and treatment. Effective Aug. 28, 2010, group health insurance plans would have to cover up to $72,000 annually for therapy, including Applied Behavioral Analysis for people under age 21 with an autism spectrum disorder. Health insurers couldn’t limit the number of visits for treatment or refuse to renew or end or restrict coverage solely because the insured is diagnosed with autism.
Under the proposed legislation, some businesses could be exempted. Those with 50 or fewer employ-ees would have to show that adding autism coverage would raise the cost of their premiums by more than
5 percent.On April 23, a similar
bill passed the state Senate 29-2, but languished in the House until lawmakers ended the 2009 session on May 15.
Gov. Jay Nixon and legislative interim com-mittees on autism worked to draft new legislation. They heard from par-ents of children with autism, autism advocates, insurers, actuaries and healthcare professionals at public hearings held in September and October in Jefferson City, St. Louis and Kansas City.
There’s bipartisan sup-port and backing from Nixon for both versions of the bill (House Bill No. 1311 and Senate Bill No. 618). Nixon called autism coverage a priority and has promoted the mea-
sure in appearances statewide with Democratic and Republican lawmakers since Dec. 1, when the bills were announced.
Filing in advance of the legislative session that will begin Jan. 6, 2010, and run through mid-May ensures that the bills will be introduced on the fi rst day in the General Assembly.
Missouri is among 27 states that considered legis-lation this year to mandate autism coverage. Kansas lawmakers ended the 2009 legislative session on May 6 without passing Senate Bill No. 12 and House Bill No. 2367. Known as Kate’s Law, the measure would’ve required insurance companies to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of up to $75,000 a year for individuals to age 21 with autism. Reps. Louis Ruiz and Mike Peterson, both Kansas City, Kan., Democrats, sponsored the bill, which was named for a 10-year-old Shawnee, Kan., girl with autism.
Since Indiana became the fi rst state to mandate autism insurance coverage in 2001, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, Pennsylva-nia, South Carolina and Texas have followed.
Nearly 1 percent (roughly 1 in 100) of U.S. children suffers from an autism spectrum disorder, according to the latest study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The prevalence of autism in Missouri and Kansas is 1 in 83 and 1 in 314, respectively, as reported by the Missouri Families for Effective Autism Treatment and the nationwide advocacy organization FightingAutism.
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, char-acterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication, self-abusive behavior, repetitive motions and unusual responses to sensory information. It’s part of a spectrum of disabilities that encompasses autism, Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder.
Most autistic children exhibit symptoms by the age of 18 months.

According to El Universal,
the arrest resulted from a phone call describing the pres-ence of several armed people on the beach.
On Jan. 29, the Kansas City (Mo.) Police Department made 45 arrests at Blue Valley Town-homes in Kansas City, Mo. According to Officer Daring V. Snapp, the sub-jects were arrested as part of a multiagency task force focused on arresting people involved in welfare fraud.
On Jan. 30, a basketball game at the Tony Aguirre Community Center in Kansas City, Mo., was inter-rupted by a shooting that left fi ve people injured and the center damaged. Accounts from spectators indicated that gang members were responsible for the shooting.
During the latter part of January, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration alerted consumers about a salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter and peanut paste.

government confi rmed that the Air France plane that had disap-peared May 31 had been found. Several news agencies reported the appearance of pieces of a plane in the Atlantic Ocean that could’ve been part of the missing Air France plane.
On June 3, the NCLR launched its campaign “Reform Immigra-tion FOR America” to push for immigration reform and press President Obama and Congress to develop an immigration policy to help the more than 12 million
undocumented immigrants in the United States.
On June 28, around 200 soldiers surrounded the Presi-dential House and arrested Hon-duran President Manuel Zelaya mere hours before conducting a poll on a proposal to reform the Honduran constitution.
Entertainer Michael Jackson died June 25. Medical reports indicated it was from a drug overdose.
Also during June, Dos Mundos celebrated its 28th anniversary of serving the Kansas City area.
JulySonia Sotomayor faced many
questions from the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in her quest
for confi rmation to the U.S. Supreme Court bench. The committee questioned Sotomayor’s objectivity regard-ing several controversial cases she has heard as a judge, including her decision in a case in which white fi refi ghters in Connecticut claimed they were denied promotions because of reverse discrimination.
On July 22, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis visited the Guadalupe Centers Inc. (GCI) facilities in Kansas City, Mo., to promote a new fund that would prepare workers for healthcare careers. Solis toured the facilities and met with fi rst-year students of the Escalera program, with whom she shared experiences and ideas. The stu-dents shared with her their personal backgrounds and Escalera’s importance in their lives.
On July 27, a group of immigrants started a hunger strike in a Basile, La., prison to protest a perceived lack of medical attention, non-existent phone contact with lawyers and family, lack of information about immigration matters (including deportation) and lack of cleaning and hygiene.
Juan Sepulveda, director of the White House Initia-tive on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, hosted a forum July 31, on education at the GCI facili-ties. Titled “Community Conversations,” the forum was organized to hear concerns and comments from Kansas City area Latinos regarding education to help the initia-tive in focusing on issues.
During July, Walter Lara got to stay in the United States. Well-known among immigrants in the United States, the 23-year-old came to the United States from Argentina at age 3 and graduated with honors from Miami-Dade College. However, because his parents were undocumented when they brought him to Miami, he was facing deportation.
AugustSonia Sotomayor became the fi rst Latina U.S. Supreme
Court judge on Aug. 6, when the Senate confi rmed Sotomayor’s appointment to the Supreme Court with a 68-31 vote.
From Aug. 9 to 11 Mexican President Felipe Calderon, U.S. President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper met in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, for the fi fth North American Leaders Summit. The leaders discussed such issues as the international recession, national security, NAFTA, immigration, creat-ing a green environment and climate change.
Several businesses reported violent crimes during August in Kansas City, Mo.’s Westside neighborhood.
One of the most shocking occurred around 6:45 p.m. Aug. 10 at Tina’s Salon, a hair salon in the 900 block of West 24th Street. Accord-ing to the witnesses, three males entered the salon and tried to rob it. An employee confronted and resisted them and the suspects shot him. Fatally wounded, the employee was taken to the hospital.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napoli-tano met with more than 100 community leaders Aug. 20 in the White House to push for prompt immigration reform. The meeting was arranged to reinforce President Obama’s promise to address immigration reform.
U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy died before midnight Aug. 25 at his home in Massachusetts. Kennedy had served in politics since 1962 and had battled brain cancer since 2008. He was well-known among Hispanics for sup-porting immigration reform, particularly the proposed Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act; healthcare reform; and equal rights legislation.
On Aug. 30, a popular Lenexa, Kan., eatery closed after 20 diners became ill. Jennifer Bustos-Gomez, director of operations for the Mi Ranchito Cocina & Cantina Mexicana location on West 95th Street at Interstate Highway 35, called for ambulances for diners who were vomiting, nauseous and dizzy around 6 p.m. that day. The 12 stricken diners were transported to area hospitals, where they were treated and released.
SeptemberOn Sept. 1, U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II of Mis-
souri; Adolfo Carrion, director, White House Urban Affairs; Shaun Donovan, secretary, Department of Housing and Urban Development; and John D. Porcari, deputy secretary of transportation, met to review the impact and development of the Green Impact Zone in Kansas City, Mo.
On Sept. 9, the Associated Press reported that an AeroMexico Boeing 737 jet was hijacked that day at Mexico City International Airport. The news service also reported that Mexican police offi cers had arrested a group of Bolivians in con-nection with the crime.
GCI held its 23rd Blanco y Negro Awards Gala as part of the Kansas City area’s festivities for National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) Featuring Raul Yzaguirre as the guest speaker, the event was held in the Kansas City Con-vention Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Created to help all Mexicans who return home during the holidays, the Paisano program is running through Jan. 10, 2010.During October, Mexican President Felipe Calderon
proposed a plan called “Contribution to Fight Against Poverty” to help more than 50 million impoverished Mexicans. Kansas City, Mo., prohibited discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations.

ciation hosted its fi rst national convention at the GCI facilities.
On Nov. 5, federal prosecutors charged a husband and wife – Arnoldo Bazan, 30; and Yini De La Torre, 19 – with mixing methomyl in the salsa served at Mi Ranchito’s Lenexa, Kan., location on two occasions.
On Nov. 10, an accident occurred at the construction site for the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, located at 16th Street and Broadway in Kansas City, Mo. According to the witnesses, an articulated boom lift with Ryan Goodman and Shane Wagener fell. Both were taken to local hospitals. Goodman died at the hospital.
On Nov. 13, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano outlined proposals at the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy group in Washington, D.C., for overhauling the nation’s immigration system.
U.S. Reps. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, Nydia Velazquez of New York and Raul Grijalva of Arizona held a Nov. 18 teleconference to discuss Gutierrez’s immigration reform proposal, which would be presented in early December to Congress. More than 52,400 people nationwide gathered at community centers, churches and other facilities to listen to the teleconference.
In separate ballots, the Kansas City, Mo., City Council voted Nov. 19 in regular session to remove City Manager Wayne Cauthen and name city budget director Troy Schulte as interim city manager.
On Nov. 29, Hondurans elected the president to succeed Manuel Zelaya, whose government had been overthrown in June. Porfi rio Lobo from the National Party was declared the winner with more than 55 percent of the votes. However, several newspapers have reported that more than 60 percent of Honduran voters didn’t vote.
From Nov. 27 to Nov. 30, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa visited Mexico to emphasize the impor-tance of building better relations between Mexico and the United States. In Mexico City, he met with Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, who honored him as a distinguished guest of Mexico City. Both mayors signed an agree-ment of cooperation on education, global warming and human rights.

Drug lord Arturo Beltran Leyva – nicknamed the “Jefe de Jefes” (“Chief of Chiefs”) – died Dec.16 in a shooting in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.
On Dec. 18, Mexican Secretary of Health Jose Angel Cordova visited the Kansas City area to sign health agreements to promote an exchange of research, staff members and educational sources between the United States and Mexico, particularly between Mexico and the Kansas City area.
On Dec. 21, the family of a member of the Mexican navy who participated in the operation against Leyva was attacked. Four people were reported as dead, all of them relatives of Melquisedet Angulo Cordova, a marine who died during the shooting.

El secretario de Salud de México, Dr. José Ángel Córdova Villalobos fi rmó recientemente una “carta
de intención” para que el gobierno mexicano colabore con el hospital Children’s Mercy en Kansas City, Mo.
De acuerdo con C ó r d o v a , v a r i o s acuerdos existen entre hospitales en México y Estados Unidos en varias especialidades, p e r o p e r o e s t a colaboración apunta especialmente hacia el fomento del avance de la salud pediátrica.
“ E s t a m o s comprometidos con el suministro a niños en las respectivas comunidades atención médica integral, de alta calidad y accesible fácilmente”, informó Córdova durante una reciente ceremonia de firmas en el hospital Children’s Mercy, agregando que el presidente mexicano Felipe Calderón quiere impulsar el acceso a la atención médica para todos los niños.
Con la reciente firma, los hospitales infantiles locales de Kansas City y el gobierno mexicano han acordado desarrollar un sistema de referencias de pacientes conjunto, el intercambio de personal médico, así como el establecimiento de educación contínua y oportunidades de investigación. Córdova dijo que los dos hospitales infantiles de México en la Ciudad de México serán muy probablemente los puntos principales de colaboración con Children’s Mercy.
Randall O’Donnell, Director Ejecutivo General del hospital Children’s Mercy, comentó que el acuerdo no ha sido fi nalizado, pero que espera que los primeros programas conjuntos están funcionando en algún momento del 2010.
“Yo pienso que hay mucho momentum ahora”, dijo O’Donnell.
Children’s Mercy tiene una relación de hermandad con un hospital en la Ciudad de Panamá, Panamá; y Quanzhou, China, “pero ésta es la primera vez que nos hemos asociado con una nación para proveer atención pedíatrica y habilidades”, refi rió.
O’Donnell también comentó que el tener una relación directa con México facilitará el desarrollo de proyectos de salud binacionales y la capacitación cruzada del personal médico y facilitará el acceso a la atención médica para niños internacionales que pudieran requerir un alto nivel de especialización en el cuidado pediátrico.
Además, el acuerdo proveerá una base extra para que Children’s Mercy fortalezca su compromiso con los latinos de Kansas City, de acuerdo con O’Donnell.

With the recent signing, Kansas City’s local children’s hospi-tals and the Mexican
government have agreed to develop a joint patient referral system, exchange medical staff members and establish continuing education and research opportunities. Cordova said Mexico’s two children’s hospitals in Mexico City will likely be the main points of collaboration with Children’s Mercy.
Randall O’Donnell, Children’s Mercy Hospital CEO, said the agreement hasn’t been fi nalized, but he expects the fi rst joint programs to be running sometime in 2010.
“I think there’s a lot of momentum right now,” said O’Donnell.
Children’s Mercy has sister relationships with a hospital in Panama City, Panama; and Quanzhou, China, “but this is the fi rst time we have partnered with a nation to provide pediatric care and expertise,” said O’Donnell.
O’Donnell also said having a direct relationship with Mexico will facilitate the development of bina-tional health projects and the cross-training of medical personnel and ease healthcare access for international children that might require a high level of specialized pediatric care.
In addition, the agreement will provide an extra base for Children’s Mercy to strengthen its commitment to Kansas City’s Latinos, according to O’Donnell.
“This helps to ground us in our outreach and in our connections,” he said. “It makes an extra state-ment for those who come here. It says, ‘Look, we’re tied to the Hispanic world, so when you come here,

escénico.Las clases para artistas jóvenes en ciernes desde
preescolar hasta octavo grado serán ofrecidas comenzando en la semana del 18 de enero en el teatro Starlight y otras 4 ubicaciones en el área de Kansas City. Las clases se reunirán una tarde o noche a la semana durante 14 semanas.

Con más de 30 mil copias vendidas en México, el más reciente álbum del cantante
mexicano Kalimba, Amar y Querer, se convirtió hoy en Disco de Oro.
El álbum nació a partir de una idea dentro del programa El show de los sueños, en el cual Kalimba participó e interpretó diversos temas de cantantes, compositores e intérpretes latinos.
Amar y Querer está diseñado bajo el concepto big band y es solamente una pausa en la carrera del cantante y en la de su banda de rock & roll, sin
embargo también fue una oportunidad del artista para demostrar que tiene el talento para interpretar y disfrutar distintos estilos musicales, indicó su compañía disquera. Además, el ex integrante de OV7 realizará una gira la cual constará de 20 a 30 conciertos con la Big Band en vivo, llevando a distintas zonas de la República Mexicana este estilo diferente y no tan convencional dentro de las costumbres musicales mexicanas. La gira Amar y Querer está planeada a empezar en febrero y tendrá una duración de aproximadamente cuatro meses.

Concierto en Kansas City
On Thursday (Dec. 31, New Year’s
Eve), Kansas City, Mo.s’ Power & Light District will become the Times Square of the Midwest when it hosts the “2010 Live!”
The event will include music, a countdown to New Year’s Day and $5,000 in money confetti
that will be thrown into the crowd.According to Rachel Waller, Power
& Light District partnership market-ing manager, the celebration will be the biggest party in town.
“People can hang out with their family and friends at a variety of venues – and in the center of it all, (will be) KC Live!” Waller said.
The event will start around 8 p.m. with a concert. Local bands Retro Active and Pomeroy (11:30 p.m.) will take the stage. Both bands will play original songs and covers.
Seconds before midnight, the count-down to 2010 will occur. At that time, a ball will drop to welcome in 2010.
The party will last all night.“This will be (a) fun, energetic and
memorable experience for all our guests,” Waller said.
In addition to the entertainment offered during the celebration, many restaurants and venues in the Power & Light district will offer New Year’s Eve specials.
“We welcome everyone to come down for dinner and to celebrate the new year,” Waller said. “This is an event that you will remember for a long time.”
This is the third year that the Power & Light District has staged a New Year’s celebration. The event is free and open to ages 21 and older.

“La gente podrá pasarla con su familia y amigos en una variedad de lugares – y en el centro de todo, estará KC Live!”, dijo.
El evento comenzará a las 8 p.m. con un concierto. Las bandas locales Retro Active y Pomeroy (11:30 p.m.) inundarán en el escenario. Ambas tocarán canciones originales y covers.
Segundos antes de la media noche, se llevará a cabo el conteo regresivo del 2010. En ese momento, se dejará caer una bola para dar la bienvenida al 2010.
La fi esta durará toda la noche.“Será una experiencia divertida,
energética y memorable para todos los asistentes”, comentó.
Además del entretenimiento ofrecido durante la celebración, muchos restaurantes y negocios en el distrito ofrecerán especiales de víspera de Año Nuevo.

Éste es el tercer año que el Distrito Power & Light ha organizado una celebración de Año Nuevo. El evento es gratuito y abierto a personas de 21 año y mayores.

Traveling by air is nothing like it used to be. It’s even more unpleasant during the holiday
season.The annoying airport security checks (why did
they take away an item of mine in one city, but not at another?); the plane seats that get smaller every day (as if they were built for children); and the frequent delays (when was the last time your fl ight arrived on time?) have made fl ying sheer purgatory.
What matters to passengers nowadays is simply to get where they’re going. It wasn’t always like that. I still remember my parents dressing elegantly for airplane travel, no matter where they were visiting. The memory of a pleasurable fl ight was often more vivid than the place they visited.
Not anymore.I fl y more than I would like – at least once or twice a
week. I can tell you it’s useless to expect a little comfort or privacy. My last three fl ight companions are particu-larly unforgettable.
The fi rst one can only be called “The Contagious Man.” From the moment he got on board, he never stopped sneezing. Because he clearly hadn’t seen the TV ads about how to cover your mouth when you sneeze, he sprayed me with viruses and germs like a summer shower.
At dinner, I bravely tried to protect my tray. It wasn’t because it was a scrumptious meal; the food looked (and tasted) like a heap of rubber bands. But I didn’t want to catch the H1N1 fl u on my fl ight from Miami to Mexico.
The Contagious Man, meanwhile, performed a concert of loud sneezes and – dare I say it? – monstrously loud mucous snorting and dreadful noises from his lungs. His red, irritated nose was a veritable battlefi eld, and I was its involuntary reporter.
In the end, I lost. The Contagious Man sputtered one of his germs into my drink, and I was then sick for a week. Thankfully, it wasn’t the H1N1 fl u. At least, I don’t think so.
Another fl ight companion, this time on a trip from Washington, D.C., to Houston, counted out seven pills and chewed them in front of me with his mouth wide open, as if he needed a witness to his misery. “Poor man,” I thought. “He must be very ill.”
In Washington, it was freezing. But the “Pill Man” felt he was already on vacation, so he was wearing sandals, shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. Even so, I wondered why the man had to take so many pills so early in the day.
I knew soon after takeoff.By 7:30 a.m., my companion had drunk three mini-
bottles of vodka. That helped explain the pills: fear of fl ying.
He was fast sleep by 8. His alcoholic breath wafted onto my face, as he breathed noisily, like a wounded dragon. Bits of crushed pills that speckled his teeth and tongue could be seen in his half-open mouth as he drooled.
My third memorable fl ight companion confused his seat with his bathroom at home. As soon as he was aboard, he started to undress. He gave his coat to the fl ight atten-dant, unbuckled his belt and opened his pants button, his huge white belly spilling over like an avalanche.
He kicked off his shoes, pulled out his shirt and began distributing his belongings – portfolio, cell phone, water bottle, some duty-free purchases – all around him, includ-ing on me. He not only broke the most basic rules of fl ight etiquette, but with all his stuff, he fi lled my personal, vital space: those 12 inches of minimum distance between a stranger and the whites of my eyes.
His hairy arms overlapped the armrest between us as he read the newspaper, while I dodged the sports section. The torment ended when, with his arms crossed and legs spread in a wide “V” for victory, he fell asleep and his snores accompanied the sound of the turbines. I ended up being his pillow, pressed against the window like a fl y.
The worse thing is, after all those trips, I have a nag-ging question: What did those three illustrious gentlemen think of me?
Viajar por avión ya no es lo mismo. Y menos en estos días de fi esta.
Las insoportables medidas de seguridad en los aeropuertos (¿por qué me quitaron en una ciudad lo que me dejaron pasar en otra?), los asientos cada vez más pequeños en los aviones (como para niños) y los constantes retrasos (¿cuándo fue tu último vuelo que llegó a tiempo?) han hecho que volar sea un purgatorio.
Lo importante hoy es llegar. Antes no era así. Recuerdo todavía a mis padres vestirse elegantemente para tomar un vuelo, sin importar a dónde. La memoria de un vuelo placentero quedaba tan marcada o más que la del lugar que visitaban. Ya no.
Yo viajo por avión más de lo que quisiera, al menos una o dos veces a la semana. Es en vano esperar un poquito de privacidad. Y no me he podido borrar de la mente a tres de mis últimos compañeros de viaje.
Al primero que aquí rindo tributo le llamaré, simplemente, El Contagioso. Desde que se subió al avión no paró de estornudar y, como no había visto los reportajes de televisión sobre cómo tapar el estornudo con el antebrazo, me salpicó de virus y otros gérmenes impronunciables como si fuera lluvia de verano.
A la hora de la comida yo protegía valientemente mi bandeja. Y no es que se tratara de un manjar; el almuerzo parecía (y sabía) como una madeja de ligas. Pero no me quería enfermar de la gripe H1N1 en el vuelo de Miami a México.
El Contagioso, mientras tanto, mezclaba un singular concierto de estornudos con unas monstruosas jaladas de mocos, inhalados con toda la fuerza y estruendo de sus pulmones. La roja e irritada nariz de ese hombre era un verdadero campo de batalla, y yo su involuntario reportero.
Al final, perdí. El contagioso logró colar uno de sus virulentos soplidos en mi bebida y después estuve enfermo por una semana. Pero no fue la gripe H1N1. Bueno, creo que no.
Otro compañero de asiento, en un vuelo de Washington a Houston, mascaba sus siete píldoras con la boca abierta, como si necesitara un testigo presencial de su masacre bucal. Pobre hombre, pensé. Debe tener muchas enfermedades.
En Washington hacía un frío de tembladera. Pero el Señor de las Píldoras ya se sentía de vacaciones y no tuvo ningún empacho en viajar con sandalias, pantalón corto y camisa hawaiana. Aún así me intrigaba saber qué hacía que este hombre se metiera tantas pastillas tan temprano. Y lo supe poco después del despegue.
No daban todavía las 7:30 a.m. cuando el individuo ya había ingerido tres botellitas de vodka. Eso explicaba las pastillas.
Se cuajó en su asiento antes de las 8:00. El aliento alcohólico salía fi loso como espada. Respiraba con trabajo, como un dragón herido. Y los pedacitos de colores de las pastillas desbaratadas, como de fi esta, adornaban los dientes y la lengua de una boca semiabierta que babeaba un espeso líquido amarillento.
Mi tercer memorable compañero de vuelo confundió su asiento con el baño de su casa. Tan pronto entró al avión empezó a desvestirse. Le dio el saco a la asistente de vuelo, se desabrochó el cinturón y se abrió el botón de los pantalones; su voluminoso y blanco abdomen no tardó en desbordarse como una avalancha.
Tiró los zapatos al piso, se sacó la camisa y empezó a repartir sus pertenencias -- portafolios, celular, botella de agua, compras del “duty-free” -- a su alrededor (o sea, sobre mí). No sólo rompió las más elementales reglas de la etiqueta sino que llenó de objetos mi espacio vital: esos 30 centímetros de distancia mínima entre un extraño y lo blanco de mis ojos.
Sus brazos peludos entraban y salían de mi asiento mientras él leía su periódico y yo esquivaba la sección de deportes. La tormenta terminó cuando, con los brazos en cruz, y las piernas en V de victoria, se echó a dormir y sus ronquidos se confundieron con las turbinas del avión. Acabé siendo su almohada y embarrado como mosca contra la ventana.
Lo malo es que, después de todos estos viajes, me he quedado con una duda: ¿Qué es lo que estos tres ilustres caballeros habrán pensado de mí?

country, with no religious persecution, with freedom of expression and freedom of association, tend to take liberty for granted. But daily, many people worldwide risk their lives for it.
2) The strength to overcome obstacles: When a crisis strikes, you might feel like the world is ending, but you were born with the ability to overcome any adversity. As long as you hang in there, you’ll always come out ahead.
3) Mistakes made: You can always learn something from them, and you’re wiser because of them.
4) Faith: We humans are blessed with faith, the most powerful gift God granted us. It’s the only thing you need to make your dreams come true.
5) A unique talent: You were born with a special talent. You came into this world to make a difference, using this unique ability of yours. Find out what it is and you’ll discover your life’s mission. Then, you’ll be truly happy, living up to your potential.
6) Love: We are blessed with the capacity for love. How divine!
7) Even better, we’re loved: It’s a great treasure to have the unconditional love of even just one other person.
8) Health: If you possess energy and strength and can take care of yourself, be eternally grateful. You’re blessed!
9) Food and water: No room for debate! We simply can’t live without them.
10) Laughter: We’re the only creatures on Earth with the ability to laugh (although my sister-in-law insists that her dog can!). Laughter is good for the soul and cures what ails you.
The more grateful you are for what you have, the more blessed you’ll be. Even under the toughest circumstances, you’ll always have some positive things in your life. You just need to recognize them and give thanks!
Este año ha sido de grandes retos para la mayoría. Muchos han perdido sus ahorros, trabajos y hasta
sus casas. La manera más efectiva de mejorar nuestras vidas en el 2010 es agradecer. Tal vez dirás: ¿agradecer qué, sólo he tenido problemas este año?
Sin importar los percances que hayas experimentado, te aseguro que tienes muchísimo para agradecer. Si no sabes por dónde empezar, a continuación comparto contigo diez cosas que tú gozas las cuales tienen un valor incalculable; y sin ellas, tu vida no sería la misma. Aquí está mi decálogo. Gracias por:1) La libertad. Quienes nacimos en un país libre, sin
persecución religiosa, libertad de expresión y de reunión, no pensamos en la gran fortuna de gozar de la libertad. Muchas personas a diario arriesgan sus vidas por obtenerla.
2) Fuerza para superar obstáculos. Cuando aparece una calamidad puedes pensar que el mundo se acaba, pero lo cierto es que naciste con la capacidad de superar cualquier adversidad. Por eso, con perseverancia, siempre saldrás adelante.
3) Los errores cometidos. De tus fallas aprendes cosas nuevas. Gracias a tus errores, hoy eres más sabio.
4) La semilla de la fe. Los humanos poseemos el don de la fe. Ese es el regalo más poderoso que Dios te concedió. Todo lo que necesitas para lograr lo que deseas es fe.
5) Un talento único. Naciste con un don especial. Viniste a este mundo a hacer una diferencia usando tus talentos. Descúbrelo y sabrás tu misión en la vida. Es entonces cuando te sentirás realizado y feliz.
6) El amor. Estamos dotados con la capacidad de amar. ¡Que divino!
7) Todavía mejor… Tenemos gente que nos ama. Es una gran dicha contar con al menos una persona que te ame incondicionalmente.
8) La salud. Si disfrutas de energía, fortaleza—y puedes valerte por ti mismo, agradece sin cesar. ¡Eres bendecido!9) Agua y a l imentos . ¡No hay discusión! , s i n e s t o s n o p o d r í a s s o b r e v i v i r .10) Risas. Somos los únicos seres en el mundo con la capacidad de reírnos, aunque mi cuñada insista que su perrita lo hace… ¡es debatible! La risa te sana e ilumina tu espíritu.
Mientras más agradecido estés por lo que tienes, más bendiciones te llegarán. Aún en las circunstancias más difíciles, cosas positivas permanecen constantes en tu vida, es cuestión de reconocerlas y ¡dar gracias!
