On Feb. 27, three young men were shot in a crowded Northland hotel room, including one Latino, Delfi no Elizondo.

Between his junior and senior seasons with the Park Uni-versity men’s basketball team, Eduardo Quintero’s role

on the team has changed.That change has brought a greater sense of personal

accountability.Quintero, a 6-foot-5, Mexican-born post player,

was primarily a reserve player his junior season. This season, he’s played primarily as a starter. Through 28 games, Quintero had played in every game and started in 25, averaging 22.5 minute per game.

As a regular starter, Quintero believes he must be stricter with himself, he said during a mid-season interview. That means pushing himself “a little bit more,” whether it’s on or off the court.

As has been reported in the international media, the WikiLeaks cables of comments from Pascual and other U.S. officials have generated tension between the two governments.

Fighting the drug cartels was an issue Cal-deron discussed with U.S. President Barack Obama when he visited Washington (see related story). Other issues included weapons traffick-ing and the murder of ICE agent.

One of the petitions discussed in the meet-ing was to allow United States officers to carry weapons in Mexico. This situation won’t be pos-sible because the Mexican constitution forbids foreigners to carry weapons in the country.

Irvin reportedly stepped outside with a friend to discuss something privately. Gunfire broke out while they were outside.

“From what I was hearing (before the gunfire), he (Delfino) was trying to calm down the situation,” Irvin said.

After the shots rang out, Irvin immediately left the scene and went to his cousin’s house. Joksimovic and Hamidovic died at the scene. Delfino died that morning in an area hospital.

Delfino, 22, was an avid basketball and pool player and known for cooking excellent steaks. According to Irvin, Delfino always sought new challenges.

“Anything he hadn’t done, he wasn’t scared to try it,” Irvin said.

Delfino also tried to prepare his cousins for a tough world, Irvin recalled.

“Growing up, he was really a bully to me,” Irvin said. “But I saw that he was trying to toughen me up.”

Irvin also remembered his cousin as someone who welcomed the role of mediator, as had been the case the night of the shooting.

“He was the type of person that, once you got around to saying what you were mad about and explaining (it) to him, you weren’t mad about it anymore,” Irvin said.

Delfino also was known as a teacher. In fact, before the violence broke up the party up, he was trying to teach Irvin how to dance.

“I told him I couldn’t dance, and he’s like, ‘Well, you’re about to learn,’ ” Delfino’s cousin said.

Most of Delfino’s lessons were indirect, though.“I learned a lot of things just by his example,”

Irvin said. “He showed me that, whenever people say ‘Live life to the fullest,’ they don’t mean party a lot and go do stupid (expletive deleted). It’s more, ‘Don’t be scared to challenge yourself’ and ‘Be happy.’ ”

Delfino’s funeral service was held March 4 at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Kansas City, Kan. He was interred in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include his father, Delfino Sr.; mother, Dorothy Gonzales, of Kansas City, Mo.; son Lorenzo; and daughter Aiyana. Other survivors include a brother, Alberto; and four sisters, Jes-sica L. Gonzalez, Laura M. Elizondo, Ambrocia Elizondo and Sandy Elizondo.

The shooting remains under investigation. Originally investigated by the Kansas City (Mo.) Police Department’s Metro Patrol, the case has been handed over to the Sheriff’s Office of Clay County, Mo.

In October 2010, 900 women business and

political leaders gathered in France for the sixth annual Global Meeting of the Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society. Also attending were more than 20 – mostly male – heads of industry.

Gender parity was a top issue. Women are underrepresented in corporate board rooms, and female entrepreneurs must often overcome a more complex set of challenges than their male counterparts.

On March 8, 2010, on the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, the World Economic Forum (WEF) published a report showing that women worldwide trail men in salary and profes-sional advancement opportunities. That was the pattern even in the United States, Spain, Canada and Finland, which employ the most women. The forum’s figures are based on a survey of 600 of the world’s largest companies.

The International Labor Organization pub-lished similar findings in a 2009 report. It also revealed a 20 percent salary gap between women and men employed full time in the world’s top economic powers.

On Jan. 26, the WEF held its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Chief executive officers from the 1,000 member companies attended the five-day, invitation-only conference, along with political leaders, finance ministers, economists, academics and celebrities. U.S. Treasury Sec-retary Tim Geithner and former President Bill Clinton were among more than 2,000 partici-pants. Only 16 percent were women.

According to Patricia Sellers, writing for CNN-Money.com on Jan. 4, “Only a dozen Fortune 500 companies have female CEOs.” However, Sellers noted, “Two of the Dow 30 companies that delivered the best stock-market gains in 2010 are run by women.”

Several European countries are pushing com-panies to appoint more women senior executives. Some propose compulsory targets. But it’s not patronizing, mandatory quotas that women seek, female executives in Europe insist. Rather, it’s having an equal opportunity for admission to corporate boardrooms based on merit and business and leadership capabilities.

In this country, women have made headways in other arenas – medicine and politics, for instance. In 2006, women accounted for a third of the U.S. physician population, up from 7.6 percent in 1980, according to the American Medical Association. And more than half of medical school applicants in the 2004-05 academic year were women, almost double the number in 1980-81.

The United States trails other industrialized nations, ranking 73rd in the number of women in government. Their numbers have leveled off over the past decade, but women have at least gained and held onto a purchase in politics. Seven women occupy Cabinet posts in the Obama administra-tion. That’s down from eight under the two pre-vious presidents, but a record-breaking number served in state legislatures in 2010 – 24.5 percent of the 50 states’ combined 7,382 state lawmakers were women. Only seven states are led by women, but 18 states have female chief justices.

This year, the United Nations is dedicating International Women’s Day to “Equal access to education, training, and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.”

Women aren’t after preferred status. They’ve proved themselves in other fields because they’ve won equal access to consideration. That’s what they want in business.

As one successful Latina entrepreneur said, “We don’t have to show that we’re as good as men contractors to get the contract. We have to be better.”

Mental health refers to our cognitive and emotional well-being. It is about how

we think, feel, and behave.Mental health also includes a person’s abil-

ity to enjoy life and attain a balance between life activities and the efforts to achieve psy-chological resilience. It also is the emotional and social maturity or normality in which the person manages daily challenges.

Mental health is a state of well-being in which the person realizes his or her abilities to cope with normal stress such as work to effectively be productive and to make a contri-bution to his or her family and community.

Good mental health is essential to a person’s ability to enjoy life, to plan for the future and learn from past experiences to prevent nega-tive effects in his or her present life. Good mental health is exhibited in resiliency – the ability to rebound from adversity and handle losses and stresses realistically. Good mental is demonstrated by an ability to balance life’s demands, set boundaries and divide tasks in ways that benefit one’s needs.

In addition, a person with good mental health displays the potential for flexibility and can express feelings openly and in a healthy manner. A person with good mental health

It’s always easier to define mental illness than it is to define mental health. For this reason, it’s important to recognize that mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders – and that some people are mentally healthier than others and see and experience life differently.

Mental health disorders can affect anyone. We all have the potential to be affected by per-sonal problems, losses and stressful events that are beyond our control, regardless of our age. Whether we’re male or female, rich or poor, each day we all face the many responsibilities that can affect our emotions and behaviors in unhealthy ways. It’s important to recognize our strengths and limitations and take care of our own psychological needs through family members or external support.

There are a few mental health strategies that can be applied to stay in good mental health. Diet and exercise are important. A healthy diet includes protein, fruits and vegetables, and milk. Exercises include walking, running, dancing and outdoor sports.

In addition, it’s important to maintain a healthy social life that includes support from friends, co-workers and spiritual contacts such as church members. It’s also important to stay connected to community events and be a part of the community to prevent isola-tion and alienation, which can cause mental health problems.

(MS) – There are about 70 million Irish descendants worldwide, and many will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this March 17.

Many will hit the pubs or participate in parades. However, traditional Gaelic games also offer ways to celebrate. Gaelic football, for example, is a hybrid of soccer and rugby. The ball used in Gaelic football is round, slightly smaller than a soccer ball, and there are 15 players on each team. Another sport is hurling, a game similar to hockey with a small ball and a curled wooden stick that’s thought to be the oldest field game in European history.

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was staged in New York City. In 1762, Irish soldiers serving in the English military became the first to hold a St. Patrick’s Day parade in what would become the United States. The parade was organized to give the soldiers a chance to reconnect with their fellow Irishmen while celebrating their customs and heritage, despite being overseas.

The parade had more profound effects, increasing Irish patriotism among American immigrants with Irish ancestry. That growing patriotism soon led to “Irish Aid” societies, including the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Hibernian Society. The groups began host-ing annual parades.

Eventually, the New York-based Irish Aid societies united their parades and the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade was born. That parade remains one of the world’s most popular St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and routinely involves more than 150,000 participants, many of whom aren’t of Irish descent. Now a five-hour procession, the parade typically draws as many as 3 million spectators along the city’s famed Fifth Avenue.

The shamrock is the national flower of Ireland because of St. Patrick. Credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Christian belief in the Holy Trinity to the Irish pagans.

The legend of St. Pat-rick driving snakes from Ireland is likely rooted in the pagan practices that employed the use of serpent symbols during worship. So when St. Patrick is credited with driving snakes from Ire-land, this is likely symbolic of his success at spreading Christianity and ending pagan practices, including those that used the like-nesses of serpents.

Ex adicto local ayuda a las personas a rehabilitarse y ofrece servicios de asesoramiento

Por años, Francisco Torres peleó en el ring.

Luego, tuvo que luchar contra sus adicciones a las drogas y al alcohol.

Ahora, él ayuda a las personas en el área de Kansas City a luchar contra sus adicciones.

En su natal Cuba, Francisco era conocido por sus habilidades de boxeo cuando era adolescente. Entre los 14 y 19 años, se involucró con el vandalismo y las peleas.

La vida se volvió más complicada para él cuando llegó a Estados Unidos como refugiado político. Al llegar, descubrió que el trabajo y la libertad que esperaba no era tan fácil de obtener.

“Tuve que afrontar varias dificultades”, refirió. “No tenía a mi familia”.

También lo retuvieron en una base militar y él quería salir. Para salir, buscó a un maestro para que lo ayudara. Él le consiguió un empleo y lo alentó para que siguiera trabajando.

Pero Francisco se dedicó a las drogas y a tomar cada día.

“Realmente desperdicié mi tiempo”, comentó.

Él pensó en cambiar su vida y asistió a un programa patrocinado por la iglesia, pero no resultó. En vez de eso, perdió todo. Por siete años, estuvo sin hogar y consumió todas las drogas que pudo.

“Vivía en las calles, debajo de los puentes”, informó.

Una noche, temeroso de que se aprovecharan de él, se pasó toda la noche escondiéndose. “Simplemente recuerdo que esa noche estaba completamente perdido y perdí todo el dinero que tenía”, recordó.

A la mañana siguiente, despertó y quería matarse.

“Sencillamente me vi a mí mismo en el espejo y pensé que era una basura”, indicó.

Pero entonces, Francisco le pidió ayuda a Dios – y la obtuvo.

“Él me enseño lo grande que es”, refirió.El 20 de marzo, hace veinte años, Francisco

dejó las drogas. Luego obtuvo una licenciatura en Psicología y un postgrado en Orientación Psicológica. Hoy en día, maneja tres refugios para desamparados y ayuda a la gente a recuperarse de la adicción a las drogas, abuso de substancias y otros problemas. Además, trabaja con varias organizaciones, que incluyen Associated Youth Services (Servicios Juveniles Asociados).

Torres ha fundado su propia compañía de asesoría, “We Can Recover” (Nosotros Podemos Recuperarnos). Recientemente, obtuvo su licencia del negocio. Local ex-addict helps people to rehabilitate, offers counseling services

For years, Francisco Torres fought in the ring.

Then, he had to fight his addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Now, he helps people in the Kansas City area fight their addictions.

In his native Cuba, Torres became known for his boxing ability as a teen-ager. But between ages 14 and 19, he got involved in vandalism and fighting.

Life became more complicated for Torres when he arrived in the United States as a political refugee. Upon arriving, he discovered the work and freedom he was expecting wasn’t that easy to get.

“I had to face several difficulties,” Torres said. “I didn’t have (my) family.”

Torres also was held in a military based and wanted out. To get out, he looked to a teacher for help. The teacher got him a job and encouraged him to keep working.

But Torres got into doing drugs and drinking every day.

“I really wasted my time,” he said.Torres thought about changing his

life and attended a church-sponsored program, but it didn’t take. Instead, he lost everything. For seven years, Torres was homeless and did all the drugs he could.

“I lived on the streets, underneath the bridges,” he said.

One night, afraid of being taking advantage of, Torres spent the evening hiding. “I just remember that night I was completely wasted and I lost all the money that I had,” Torres recalled.

The next morning, Torres awoke and wanted to kill himself.

“I just looked (at) myself in the mirror and I thought that I was trash,” he said.

But then, Torres asked for God’s help – and got it.

“He showed me how big he is,” Torres said.

On March 20, twenty years ago, Torres quit doing drugs. He then got a bach-elor’s degree in psychology and a gradu-ate degree in counseling psychology. Nowadays, he manages three homeless shelters and helps people recover from drug addiction, substance abuse and other problems. In addition, he works with various organizations, including Associated Youth Services.

Torres has founded his own private counseling company, We Can Recover. Recently, got his business license.

He charges per consultation and type of session. “I have gotten helped by God who has put in my life wonderful people like Leslie Siwester, who helped me with my license.” Torres explained.

“After all the mistakes I’ve made, I realize I can do it,” he said. “This is because (of) God’s help. He has done miracles in my life and I have achieved a lot of things. I don’t know where I’m going,. … but I’m going.”

“Realmente lo disfruto”, comentó.Su pago proviene de las sonrisas y gozo que ve

en las caras de las personas mientras participan en las múltiples festividades de la iglesia.

“Lo hago porque quiero preservar nuestra cultura. Quiero ver a la gente feliz; y hacer este tipo de labor me hace sentir completa”, indicó.

Ella ha disfrutado el realizar servicio comunitario desde que puede recordar. Por ejemplo, mientras estaba en México, lo hizo con monjas locales.

“Yo siempre traté de ayudarles a vender artesanías y otras cosas que elaboraban”, informó.

Cuando Virginia se mudó de México a Kansas, decidió seguir ayudando a las monjas de México vendiendo sus artesanías y ropa. Luego, fundó su propio negocio. Posteriormente, su negocio se convirtió en un pasatiempo.

“Cuando empecé a asistir a San Juan Evangelista, había muchas personas que necesitaban ayuda y comencé a realizar servicio comunitario”, concluyó.

Oropeza’s area community service work resulted from her art. In 1998, she came to the United States to paint a mural in Kansas City, Kan.’s Argentine neighborhood. While working on her art, Oropeza fell in love and decided to stay.

When Oropeza started selling crafts locally, she realized the importance of selling clothes and artifacts to people who performed dances at St. John.

“I started bringing stuff from Mexico and helping them with their stuff,” Oropeza said.

In 2001, Oropeza started getting involved in various church activities, including the fiesta for Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Posadas and the Wisdom Kings.

“For me, it is very important that they (parish-ioners) know their heritage and background,” Oropeza said.

Oropeza considers her volunteer work to be “a service for the community.”

“I really enjoy it,” she said.Oropeza’s payment comes from the smiles

and joy she sees on people’s faces while they’re participating in the church’s many festivities.

“I do it because I want to preserve our cul-ture,” she said. “I want to see people happy, and doing this type of work makes me feel complete.”

Oropeza has enjoyed doing community ser-vice since she can remember. While in Mexico, for example, she did community service with the local nuns.

“I always tried to help them to sell crafts and other stuff they made,” Oropeza said.

When Oropeza moved from Mexico to Kansas, she decided to keep helping the nuns from Mexico by selling their crafts and clothes. Then, she founded her own business. Later, her business became a hobby.

“When I (started) attending St. John (the) Evangelist, there were a lot of people (needing help) and I stared doing community service,” Oropeza said.

Romero-Brown, on the other hand, came to the United States in 1981 as an exchange stu-dent. Later, she returned to Colombia, where she married an American. She and her husband then returned to the United States.

Sylvia Romero-Brown se siente “bendecida” y “agradecida con Dios” por colocarla “en el lugar justo” para ayudar, indicó.

“Siento que soy un puente entre dos culturas”, concluyó.

Romero-Brown became an associate min-ister at Grace United Methodist Church. She continues her religious education by taking classes at the St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo.

English classes, family dinners and health services are among the service programs Romero-Brown coordinates for the Center of Grace. In addition, she has helped introduce mammography exams to the local Hispanic community, through the Coalition of Hispanic Women Against Cancer.

“I always have thought that it is really impor-tant to provide information and educate our community about important issues. I thought mammographies were very important,” Romero-Brown said.

For Romero-Brown, helping people spiritu-ally and physically is a fundamental part of her life.

“Every day is a blessing because people come to find someone who listens, understands and guides them. I think we are doing that and that makes me feel happy,” Romero-Brown said.

Romero-Brown feels “blessed” and “grateful to God” for putting her “in the right spot” to minister, she said.

“I feel I’m a bridge among two cultures,” she said.

Obama habló primero, agradeciendo a Calderón por su visita para “profundizar la cooperación que es tan esencial para la prosperidad y seguridad de nuestras dos naciones”. Abrió anunciando el acuerdo en un plan propuesto para permitir los camiones mexicanos en EE.UU.

De ser aprobada por el Congreso, la propuesta resolvería una disputa desde hace mucho tiempo, dijo Obama. On March 3, U.S. President Barack Obama and Mexican President

Felipe Calderon held a joint press conference at the White House.

The leaders stressed trade ties between the two countries; cooperative efforts to curb cross-border drug, weapons and money smug-gling and the violence tied to it; and border security and national sovereignty.

Obama spoke first, thanking Calderon for his visit to “deepen the cooperation that is so essential to the prosperity and security of both of our countries.” He began by announcing an agreement on a proposed plan to allow Mexican trucks in the United States.

If approved by Congress, the proposal would resolve a longstanding dispute, Obama said. Safety concerns have blocked compliance with the provision in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) of 1995 to allow passage of Mexican trucks to destinations in the United States from factories in Mexico.

Obama pledged to be a “full partner” with Mexico in the struggle against drug cartels and accepted “our share of the responsibility” for the violence among drug gangs. He promised to accelerate the delivery of equipment and resources to help address the situation.

“We’re stepping up enforcement and put-ting pressure on cartels here in the U.S.,” he said.

Obama thanked “our Mexican partners” investigating the Feb. 15 attack on two U.S. agents. He plans to seek extradition of the suspects, now in custody in Mexico.

Speaking through an English translator, Calderon cited progress resulting from “our unprecedented cooperation” and thanked Obama, but said “more must be done.” He suggested, for instance, exploring ways of “sealing ports of entry … through the use of non-intrusive mechanisms for detection” to stop the flow of drugs, money and guns and “transnational crime.”

Calderón confirmó el arresto de los sospechosos del atentado en San Luís Potosí que cobró la vida del agente estadounidense Jaime Zapata y dejó herido a Víctor Ávila Jr. Existe el “deseo político” si las leyes mexicanas lo permiten, para la extradición, informó. Pero sin importar a dónde se lleven a cabo los juicios, los sospechosos deberán enfrentar la justicia.

Ambos Presidentes también abordaron el asunto de agentes estadounidenses armados en México. Es ilegal bajo las leyes mexicanas, pero Calderón indicó que él “exploraría distintas alternativas” con los legisladores.

Obama expresó que los agentes estadounidenses estaban en México solamente como asesores. “Nosotros no realizamos actividades de aplicación de la ley dentro de México”.

La visita de dos días del Presidente mexicano para aliviar la tensión entre ambas naciones -- su primera desde la visita de estado oficial de mayo del 2010 -- ocurrió tan sólo dos semanas antes del viaje de Obama a Brasil, Chile y El Salvador del 19 al 23 de marzo.

“México estará presidiendo el G20 el próximo año. En este contexto, felicito al presidente Obama por realizar una visita a Latinoamérica”, concluyó Calderón.

Cada uno de los Presidentes aceptó dos preguntas de dos reporteros al final de la plática de 50 minutos.

Obama también abordó las tensiones en aumento en Libia.

“We could assuredly have the safe and secure borders that both peoples want,” Calderon said, but acknowledged it would require “huge technological and financial resources.”

Meeting privately with Obama, Calderon said he had agreed to phase out tariffs on U.S. imports as a reprisal for non-compliance with the NAFTA transnational trucking provision.

“An integrated system for transportation benefits both countries,” he said. “It’s a great step forward.”

Calderon urged the United States to “adopt” comprehensive immigration reform. While respecting U.S. sovereignty, he criticized “local interests” for enacting laws that criminalize immigrants and violate their rights.

But he said, “I recognize and value President Obama’s support for adopting immigration reform and his commitment to immigrants’ rights.”

Calderon confirmed the arrest of suspects in the San Luis Potosi attack that killed U.S. agent Jaime Zapata and wounded Victor Avila Jr. There’s “political will,” if Mexican law allows, for extradition, he said. But wherever the trials take place, the suspects must face justice.

Although the suspects claim they hadn’t known they were attacking U.S. agents, Cal-deron said it underscores the threat to law enforcement officers by criminal gangs.

“It seems to me that we are experiencing extraordinary circumstances that call for extraordinary actions by our governments,” he said.

Both presidents also addressed the issue of arming U.S. agents in Mexico. It’s illegal under Mexican law, but Calderon said he would “explore different alternatives” with legislators.

Obama said the U.S. agents were in Mexico only in an advisory capacity.

“We do not carry out law enforcement activities inside of Mexico,” he said.

Calderon’s two-day visit to ease U.S.-Mexican tensions – his first since an official state visit in May 2010 – occurred two weeks ahead of Obama’s trip to Brazil, Chile and El Salvador, scheduled March 19-23.

“Mexico will be presiding over the G20 next year,” Calderon said. “In this context, I congratulate President Obama for making a visit to Latin America.”

The presidents each took two questions from two reporters, thus ending the 50-minute talk. Obama also addressed rising tensions in Libya.

Later that day, Calderon gave a read on the economic and political conditions in Mexico at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washing-ton, D.C.

The death of an AmericanCuando matan a un estadounidense

The recent murder of an American beside a road in Mexico has come at a particularly

dangerous moment, greatly impacting already strained U.S.-Mexican efforts to cooperate on anti-drug law enforcement.

On Feb. 15 Jaime Zapata, a special agent with the federal Immigration and Customs Service, was killed by gunmen on a highway in northern Mexico. He and another agent, Victor Avila, were assigned to the customs agency’s office at the American Embassy in Mexico City. News reports indicate the men were driving to Mexico City from San Luis Potosi, about 260 miles away, to deliver equipment to another team when gunmen chased their sport-utility vehicle off the road. They were shot after they identified themselves.

Avila was wounded. Zapata was killed.Zapata’s murder has given more credibility

to the assumption that Mexico has almost fully succumbed to the violent drug cartels that brazenly operate within its borders. Unfortu-nately, it’ll likely lead more U.S. congressmen to advocate for stricter border control, rather than push for a path to legalization for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.

Not all deaths receive equal attention – the killings of most of the victims after years of drug violence in Mexico are, for the most part, not mentioned in the press. The victims are generally anonymous, but sometimes the cir-cumstances of a few deaths become news. When they do – as is the case with Zapata’s killing – in the midst of a violent climate such as the one prevailing throughout Mexico, there are usually profound diplomatic repercussions.

The death in 1985 of Enrique Camarena, an American undercover agent working for the Drug Enforcement Agency, shows how this has played out. Camarena, abducted on Feb. 7, 1985, was brutally tortured and murdered in Mexico. Believing that corrupt Mexican government officials were involved, the Regan administration launched a massive campaign against the drug cartels and seized suspects in Mexico, bringing some of them to the United States for questioning. This strained U.S.-Mexican relations for years.

Recently, President Barack Obama person-ally expressed his condolences to Zapata’s family in Texas, telling them his death wouldn’t be forgotten by his administration. That’s what happens when an American is killed: The White House announces that the government won’t rest and the pressure won’t cease until justice is served.

Already, there have been several arrests in Mexico related to the Zapata case, including that of one man nicknamed “Piolin,” who claimed he pulled the trigger. (I never cease to be amazed at how quickly the detained sing in Mexico. The confessions usually happen without a defense lawyer present, of course.)

So it seems Zapata’s death won’t go unpun-ished. But the 34,000-plus Mexicans who’ve been killed since President Felipe Calderon took office in 2006 remain forgotten and the perpetrators unpunished, save for a relative few. And there’s a growing fear among conservative U.S. politicians that violence in Mexico may spill over the border, although statistics show this is unlikely. Zapata’s death will no doubt be used to justify new, more restrictive immigration policies under the guise of security – another nail in the coffin of immigration reform.

On March 3, Calderon visited the White House. It would be reckless to say he was sum-moned to Washington by Obama only because of Zapata’s murder. One would hope that’s not how things are done. But the haste and urgency with which the meeting between the presidents has been arranged is a signal that drug violence and the death of Zapata are priority matters.

Let’s be clear: This meeting won’t solve the enormous differences between the two coun-tries on how to limit the sale and distribution of illegal drugs, no matter what’s discussed. Calderon insists the United States is partly to blame for the drug violence. The drug cartels and organized crime figures in Mexico are being armed with assault weapons and other deadly equipment easily acquired in the United States. Moreover, reducing drug consumption hasn’t been a top priority for the U.S. government. I, for one, haven’t seen one TV advertisement about the dangers of drug use in years.

Americans seem to rarely see the need to examine their part in this matter. Mexico’s rampant violence is strictly seen as Mexico’s problem.

Zapata’s death, rather than being the spark that could ignite a new era of cooperation between both countries in the war on drugs, has shown how far both nations are from reaching a long-term, shared solution.

In Mexico, the violent deaths will continue, as narcotics dealers persist in expanding their influence. And the United States will do its part by continuing to supply weapons and drug addicts ready to buy narcotics.

Zapata’s death, unfortunately, has changed nothing.

Ninguna muerte llega en buen momento. Pero el asesinato reciente en México del agente

estadounidense, Jaime Zapata, cayó en un terrible momento político y ya afectó la tensionada agenda antidrogas entre México y Estados Unidos.

El 25 de febrero, Jaime Zapata, agente especial del Servicio Federal de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE), fue asesinado por sicarios en una carretera en el norte de México. El y otro agente, Víctor Ávila, estaban asignados a la oficina de Aduanas de la agencia en la Embajada de Estados Unidos en la Ciudad de México. Informes noticiosos indican que ambos hombres viajaban a la capital mexicana desde San Luís Potosí para entregar equipo a otros compañeros cuando un grupo de pistoleros persiguió su vehículo y los obligaron a salirse del camino. Los agentes fueron baleados pese a haberse identificado. Ávila resultó herido; Zapata fue asesinado.

La muerte del agente ha dado más credibilidad a la suposición de que México casi ha sucumbido ante los violentos cárteles de la droga que operan descaradamente dentro de sus fronteras.

Desafortunadamente, también llevará a más congresistas norteamericanos a pedir un control más severo de la frontera, olvidándose de la legalización de los 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados asentados en Estados Unidos.

No todas las muertes reciben igual atención. La mayoría de las muertes por los años de violencia del narcotráfico son anónimas. Pero hay algunas, pocas, que se convierten en noticia. Y cuando esto ocurre -- como la del agente Zapata -- en medio de un clima de violencia como el de México, suelen tener enormes repercusiones diplomáticas.

La muerte en 1985 de Enrique Camarena, un agente estadounidense encubierto de la DEA, muestra cómo esto ha repercutido en el pasado. Camarena, secuestrado el 7 de febrero de 1985, fue torturado brutalmente y asesinado en México. La Administración Reagan, convencida de que funcionarios mexicanos corruptos estaban involucrados en el asesinato, lanzó una campaña masiva contra las organizaciones de traficantes y capturó a sospechosos en México, llevando a varios de ellos a Estados Unidos para interrogarlos. Esto tensó las relaciones entre ambos países durante varios años.

Este mes, el presidente Barack Obama, personalmente, le dio sus condolencias a la familia de Zapata en Texas y advirtió que su muerte no será olvidada. Eso es lo que ocurre cuando matan a un estadounidense: la Casa Blanca anuncia que el gobierno no descansará, que la presión no cederá hasta que se haga justicia. Y ya han habido varias detenciones en México relacionadas con el caso Zapata, incluyendo la de un hombre apodado “Piolín” que dice haber sido el que tiró del gatillo. (No deja de sorprenderme lo rápido que “cantan” los detenidos en México -- estas confesiones usualmente ocurren sin que esté presente un abogado defensor, por supuesto).

Así que al parecer la muerte de Zapata no quedará impune.

Pero los más de 34 mil mexicanos asesinados desde que el Presidente Felipe Calderón asumió el poder en 2006 han quedado olvidados, en su amplia mayoría; y los autores de esos crímenes siguen sin castigo. Y hay un temor creciente entre políticos estadounidenses conservadores de que la violencia en México cruce la frontera con Estados Unidos, aunque las estadísticas muestran que esto es poco probable. Sin duda, la muerte del agente Zapata será utilizada por los más conservadores para justificar nuevas y más restrictivas políticas de inmigración en la frontera, so pretexto de la seguridad -- un clavo más en el ataúd de la reforma migratoria.

Calderón visitó la Casa Blanca el 3 de marzo, y sería muy temerario decir que fue llamado a Washington por Obama sólo por el asesinato del agente Zapata -- uno espera que no haya sido así como se hicieron las cosas. Pero la premura y sorpresa con que se organizó la reunión entre los presidentes es una señal de que la violencia del narcotráfico y la muerte de Zapata son asuntos prioritarios.

Pero hay que estar claros: la reunión no va a resolver las diferencias abismales que existen entre ambas naciones acerca de cómo limitar la venta y distribución de drogas ilegales, independientemente de lo discutido. Calderón sigue insistiendo en que Estados Unidos es también parcialmente culpable por la narcoviolencia. Los cárteles de las drogas y el crimen organizado en México están armados con rifles de alta potencia y otro equipo letal comprado fácilmente en territorio estadounidense. Además, para Washington la reducción en el consumo de drogas no es realmente una meta prioritaria -- yo, al menos, no he visto un solo comercial de televisión acerca del peligro del uso de drogas desde hace años. Los estadounidenses al parecer no ven la necesidad de analizar su propia participación en este asunto. La violencia rampante en México es vista como un problema estrictamente de los mexicanos.

La muerte del agente Zapata, en lugar de marcar el inicio de una época de cooperación antidrogas entre los dos países, demuestra lo lejos que estamos de una solución conjunta y a largo plazo.

Beginning Thursday (March 10), sixth-graders in public schools or charter

public schools within the Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., public school district boundaries may apply for admission to the Kauffman Scholars Inc. (KSI) college prep and graduation program.

Applications will be accepted only during March. Admission to the program is limited.

Students, accompanied by a parent or guardian, must attend one of the KSI family information meetings to receive an application packet.

Meeting dates and locations for Kansas City, Mo., students are 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thurs-day, Paseo High School, 4747 Flora Ave.; 6:30-8:30 p.m. March 15, East High School, 1924 Van Brunt Blvd.; and 6:30-8:30 p.m. March 24, Paseo High School.

KSI’s mission is to dramatically increase the number of young people from urban areas in both Kansas Cities who go on to become college graduates. KSI begins working with students and their parents or guardians as the students enter the seventh grade. The students receive free wraparound enrichment services, including academic coaching, life coaching and mentoring.

“There are more than 1,600 young people who are Kauffman Scholars, and members of Class 1 are in their sophomore year of college,” said Steve Green, KSI president and CEO. “We have high expectations for our scholars, and we work to build the academic and life skills they need to meet those expectations. Students don’t have to be perfect to become (Kauffman) Scholars, but they do have to be willing to develop their potential.”

iniciaste … tu carrera?Darren Brass:

C o m e n c é a tatuar (durante) mi aprendizaje en una tienda en Nueva York y luego terminé en Miami.

DM: ¿Cuándo decidiste empezar a t r aba j a r con tatuajes?

DB: Me involucré con el tatuaje por primera vez hace 18 años.

D M : ¿ C ó m o lograste participar en el show (“Miami

Ink”)?DB: El show

básicamente …mmm, fue por

productora estaba buscando artistas y tiendas diferentes; y pasó y conoció a uno de mis amigos que originalmente … había tatuado antes. Y luego, él le dijo lo que estaba buscando. Y después,

grabamos el piloto... grabamos el show en diciembre.

DM: ¿Cómo te sentiste con eso?DB: Simplemente me sentí a gusto. El

plan original era un poco diferente con lo que se terminó, pero obtuvimos un buen resultado. Hubo muchas aportaciones de muchos de nosotros. Cuando e l los v ie ron cómo estaba resultado el show y cómo interactuábamos con todos, empezamos a recibir gran aceptación. Todo lo que vieron en el show fue completamente real, nada actuado y pienso que eso f u e p a r t e de nuestro éxito.

D M : ¿A quién admiras?

D B : H a y m u c h o s artistas…. Yo simplemente me inspiro en el arte en general, por alguien que realmente me impulsa y logra una diferencia. Es duro decir una persona o unas cuantas.

DM: ¿Trabajas en cualquier otro tipo de arte?

DB: ¡Oh, sí! Soy un ilustrador y hago muchas ilustraciones.

DM: ¿Cuántos tatuajes tienes?DB: Pues, … tengo un gran porcentaje

de mi cuerpo cubierto. Tengo un par que yo mismo me hice cuando era aprendiz.

DM: ¿Tienes alguno favorito?DB: Tengo una parte de mi hijo; y ése

es el más allegado que tengo. Tocó mi corazón de una manera diferente.

DM: ¿Qué le dirías a la gente que está interesada en trabajar en el tatuaje?

DB: ¡Háganlo ya! (risas)... El tatuaje tiene una forma correcta de hacerlo, Tienes que ser respetuoso con el negocio.

Hay mucha gente que realmente se mete en ello y trabajo verdaderamente duro.

DM: ¿Qué estarás haciendo en la convención?

DB: Voy a estar ahí … haciendo un buen trato … tatuar.

DM: Algún mensaje para tus fansDB: Simplemente quiero agradecerles

por apoyarme y permanecer con nosotros.… Realmente aprecio eso.… Solamente sigan brindando el apoyo y yo seguiré brindando lo que pueda.

based artist who has appeared on the TLC TV program “Miami

Ink” discussed his career and attending the convention.

Dos Mundos: How did you start … your career?Darren Brass: I started tat-

tooing (by doing) my appren-ticeship with a shop in New York, and then I finished in

Miami.DM: When did you

decide to start working with tattoos?DB: I first got into tattoo-

ing 18 years ago.DM: How did you get

to participate on the show (“Miami Ink”)?

DB: The show basically …mmm, I got lucky. The owner of the produc-tion company was looking for different artists and shops, and he stopped and met with one of my friends that I originally … (had) tattooed before. And then, he told him what he was looking for. And then, we filmed the pilot…. We filmed the show in December.

DM: How did you feel about it?DB: I just felt comfortable. The

original plan was a little different with what we ended up, but we got a good result. There was a lot of input from a lot of us. Once they saw how the show was turning out and how we interacted with everybody, we started getting great acceptance. All (of) what you saw on the show was completely real, nothing acted, and I think that was part of our success.

DM: Who do you admire?

DB: There are a lot of artists…. I’m just inspired by art in general, by someone that really pushes it and makes a di f ference . It is hard to put one (person) or a few.

D M : Do you

work in any other kind of art?DB: Oh, yeah! I’m an illustrator

and I do a lot of illustrations.DM: How many tattoos do you

have?DB: Well, … I have a good per-

centage of my body covered. I have a couple of tattoos that I did myself when I was in my apprenticeship.

DM: Do you have a favorite one?DB: I have a portion of my son,

and that is the closest (one) that I have. It touched my heart in a dif-ferent way.

DM: What would you tell people who are interested in working in tattoos?

DB: Do it the right way (laughs)!... Tattooing has a right way to do it. You’ve got to be respectful to the business.

There are a lot of people that really get into (it) and work really hard.

DM: What are you going to be doing at the convention?

DB: I’m going to be there … doing the good deal … tattooing.

DM: Any message to your fans?DB: I just want to thank them for

supporting me and staying with us.… I really appreciate that.… Just keep

giving the support, and I will k e e p giving what I can.

If it doesn’t pan out, then try something else!

Recently, I was in Wisconsin for a meet-ing. Because it’s the cheese capital, I

made time to visit a market. But what tempted my palate most were some yummy cupcakes I found at a little bakery.

The story behind those treats was more surprising!

Perusing their lengthy menu, I opted for a pumpkin creme cupcake. I had never tasted anything so delicious! I told the woman behind the counter, “Congratulations, these cupcakes are amazing!” She said, “Thank you, but these aren’t my recipes; they’re Gigi’s.”

We chatted some more and I learned a lot about the famous Gigi. As she told me Gigi’s inspiring story, all I could think was, “I have to tell my readers about this!”

At 15, Gigi started a housecleaning busi-ness. But more than anything, she wanted to be a singer-songwriter. So she sold her business and followed her dream. She started singing in clubs around Nashville, Tenn., and went to every record company in town and gave them a copy of her demo. She waited tables to pay the bills.

By the time she was 30, singing at clubs until dawn and working for tips was too exhausting and no longer fulfilling. So she set aside her dream of being a singer and returned to her cleaning business. One day, her brother called her to tell her he had had a cupcake at a famous bakery in New York City, but it wasn’t nearly as good as Gigi’s family recipe. He told her she should open a little bakery in Nashville.

Gigi listened to her brother and began pursuing her new dream, while she continued with the cleaning business to pay the bills. The day before she opened her bakery, she cleaned three houses, just so she could pay the plumber!

The inspiring thing is that it’s only been three years since Gigi sold her first cup-cake. Now, she owns a chain of 30 bakeries nationwide.

Remember, when one door closes, you have to knock on another! If it doesn’t pan out, then try something else. As long as you dare to dream, life is full of surprises.

If your dream to be an empresario, teacher, police officer, actor or writer doesn’t work out, then don’t give up!

When people ask Gigi for the secret of her success, she says, “Maybe life won’t work out exactly as you had planned, but it can turn into something even better. The key is to believe in yourself, work hard and trust in God.”

Follow this winner’s example. Never stop trying!

Recientemente fui a Wisconsin a una reunión de trabajo, y tratándose del estado

de los quesos, saqué tiempo para ir a un mercado. Sin embargo, lo que más deleitó mi paladar fueron los cupcakes de una tiendita.

¡Y la historia detrás de estas delicias fue aún más sorprendente!

Entre la gran variedad de sabores me decidí por uno de crema de calabaza. Jamás había probado algo tan delicioso. Le dije a la empleada del lugar: “¡La felicito, estos cupcakes son deliciosos! y respondió: “Muchas gracias, pero estas recetas no son mías, son creación de Gigi”.

Seguimos conversando y averigüé mucho de la famosa Gigi. Mientras la empleada me contaba la inspiradora historia, lo único que pasaba por mi mente era: “Esto lo tengo que compartir con mis lectores”.

A la edad de 15 años, Gigi creó su propio negocio de limpieza, pero su más profundo anhelo era ser cantante y compositora. Por eso, decidió vender su negocio y se dedicó a perseguir su sueño. Empezó a cantar en diversos lugares de Nashville mientras tocaba puertas de casas disqueras para mostrar su demo. A la vez Gigi trabajaba de mesera para cubrir sus gastos.

Cuando cumplió 30 años, cantar hasta la madrugada y trabajar por propinas era extenuante y ya no la llenaba, por eso decidió abandonar su sueño de ser cantante y volvió al negocio de la limpieza. Un buen día su hermano la llamó para decirle que se estaba comiendo un cupcake en una famosa repostería de Nueva York, pero que no era tan rico como la receta de Gigi y su familia. Y le comentó que debería abrir una tienda de cupcakes en su ciudad. Gigi escuchó a su hermano y empezó a perseguir un nuevo sueño, mientras continuaba con su negocio de limpieza.

De hecho, el día antes de la apertura de su tienda, limpió tres casas para poder pagar al plomero. Lo impresionante es que sólo han pasado tres años desde que Gigi vendió su primer cupcake, y hoy día es dueña de más de 30 tiendas en Estados Unidos.

Te cuento esta historia para recordarte que cuando se cierra una puerta ¡tienes que ir a tocar otra!

Si un sueño no se dio, embárcate en uno nuevo. La vida sorprende a quienes se atreven a soñar. Si tu anhelo de ser empresario, maestro, policía, actor o escritor no se dio… ¡no te rindas!

Cuando le preguntan a Gigi cuál es su secreto del éxito ella asegura: “Quizás la vida no se convierte exactamente en lo que tú tanto soñabas, pero se puede convertir en algo mejor. La clave es creer en ti, trabajar duro y confiar en Dios”.

Es el deporte más popular en el planeta y cada cuatro años se repite el miso ritual. Tal como estaba previsto, la FIFA hizo oficial que el pasado Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010 fue un negocio completo con una ganancia de $631 millones de dólares.

“La Copa del Mundo en Sudáfrica fue un gran éxito económico, para África, para Sudáfrica y para la FIFA”, declaró Blatter.

Los ingresos aumentaron 59% comparado con los cuatro años previos al Mundial de 2006 en Alemania; es decir, la FIFA sumó $4,190 millones de dólares por acuerdos comerciales y de transmisión, de los cuales el 87% están directamente ligados al pasado Mundial.

Por otra parte, la FIFA mantuvo los mismos criterios para repartir el número de plazas por continentes para el Mundial del 2014. Los Comets lograron su cuarta victoria de forma consecutiva ante el Chicago Riot el pasado domingo. Esa noche el mexicano

Byron Álvarez tuvo una excelente noche y sumó 4 goles y una asistencia; por su parte el argentino Lucas Rodríguez sumó un gol y una excelente noche.

La victoria sobre Chicago de 18 a 12, puso a los Comets en el tercer lugar de la tabla y a tan sólo un partido de diferencia entre Comets y Omaha. Para mantener el tercer lugar en la tabla, los Comets deberán jugar su liguilla en una serie ante el segundo lugar (actualmente la Ola de Milwakee).

El próximo domingo, van a visitar a Baltimore—actual líder de la liga. Si consiguen una victoria, asegurarán el tercer lugar de la liga y su calificación a la liguilla.

Por otro lado, Omaha y Milwakee se van a enfrentar dos horas antes. Si pierde Omaha ese partido, los Comets asegurarán su lugar en la liguilla, sin importar el resultado en su partido.

Ante el aliento de más de 11,000 aficionados reunidos en Centro Honda de Anaheim, California, Saúl impuso sus condiciones de principio a fin y por decisión unánime se quedó con el centro vacante en la división Súper Welter del CMB.

Arriba del cuadrilátero, el tapatío borró sus últimas titubeantes actuaciones y se fue al frente desde el primer episodio. Reflejo fiel de ese dominio fueron las puntuaciones de los jueces que le dieron el triunfo por una puntuación idéntica de 119-108, lo cual significa que Álvarez ganó todos los episodios en todas las tarjetas.

Marisha Brown, her final regular-season womenʼs basketball game was something to remember and forget.

Brown said sheʼll remember the March 5 Senior Night meeting with archrival Kansas State University (K-State) at Allen Fieldhouse “for a long time” because it was her final regular-season home game. However, she also claimed to have put the 56-51 Big 12 Conference loss behind her, specifically a turnover she had committed with 27 seconds left when KU was trailing 54-51. The game and turnover were “over and done with,” she said.

“I just have to bounce back from it, get with my team and make sure we keep our heads up,” said the Kansas City, Mo., native, who finished with four points, four rebounds and a blocked shot. “Weʼll

try to get this win in the tournament.”The Jayhawks, who finished the regular season 19-11 overall

and 6-10 in the league, began play in the single-elimination Big 12 postseason womenʼs tournament Tuesday (March 8) against the University of Colorado. The tournament will conclude Saturday (March 12) in Kansas City, Mo.̓ s Municipal Auditorium.

Private lessonsLAWRENCE, Kan. – Based on K-State womenʼs coach Deb Pat-

tersonʼs postgame comments, several of her players used the KU game to take some private basketball lessons.

Patterson considered the matchup a learning experience for several individuals. In coming off the bench, freshman Chantay Caron “learned how to keep her teamʼs execution on the defensive end of the floor” at the level it had been with K-Stateʼs veterans on the court, Patterson said. Moreover, Brittany Chambers, a sophomore guard, “learned more about how to compete and (how) to handle physical play.”

Others who learned something included sophomore guard Taelor Karr, who finished with 12 points and “learned a great deal about continuing to play through the full 40 minutes,” Patterson stated.

The Wildcats also learned a few group lessons, according to Patterson, including “how to depend on someone we usually donʼt depend on.” Players K-State counted on included starting guard Mariah White, who finished with 14 points; and starting forward Branshea Brown, who provided some needed defensive contributions.

“Thatʼs a lot of lessons in one game,” Patterson remarked. “But theyʼre all there.”

The Wildcats, who finished 20-9 overall and 10-6 in the league, began Big 12 tournament play Wednesday (March 9).

KU men finish on topThe KU men closed their regular season by defeating Texas A

& M University 64-51 March 2 at Allen Fieldhouse and then the University of Missouri (MU) 70-66 March 5 on the road. Finishing 29-2 overall and 14-2 in the league, the Jayhawks secured the Big 12 menʼs title and the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 menʼs tournament, which began Wednesday. The Jayhawks will begin tournament play Thursday (March 10).

The single-elimination tournament will conclude Saturday. All games will be in Kansas City, Mo.̓ s Sprint Center.

El mediador del gobierno federal estadounidense, George Cohen, anunció la prórroga, que fue aprobada por el comité laboral de los

dueños de equipos de la NFL y el comité ejecutivo del sindicato.

Los avances han sido mínimos según personas enteradas de las negociaciones y el mayor obstáculo sigue siendo ponerse de acuerdo para repartir $9,000 millones [de dólares].

“Seguimos trabajando duro para encontrar soluciones. Como hemos dicho antes, creemos que encontraremos una solución a través de la negociación y eso es lo que buscamos”, dijo el alto comisionado de la NFL, Roger Goodell.

Los dueños de equipos podrían decretar un cierre patronal si expira el convenio colectivo y el sindicato podría desbandarse para que los jugadores acudan directamente a los tribunales lo que marcaría una larga batalla legal.
