s any parent will tell you, there is something extra special when your own little one, (or even, big one!) performs in public, whether it be acting, dancing or singing, and succeeds in bringing tears to your eyes, (and maybe to the eyes of others.) This month’s edition includes a report from the recent Shakespeare Schools Festival, when I was lucky enough to have such a moment! So what, if “Hamlet” usually involves morbid souls, full of desperation and uncertainty? Why not focus on the natural humour you get when a doddering old fool, like Polonius, is held up to be ridiculed? Thanks, Bourne Academy and others, for making it such an enjoyable evening for us all. We hope you all enjoy our collection of features and informative snippets this month and our continued thanks go to all of our contributors.

Hurricane Gonzalo has just whistled through and made us all aware that we’re due for some cold, wet and windy stuff before long. The following lines, taken from a Thomas Hood poem, seem apt for this time of the year:No sun - no moon! No morn - no noon - No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day..No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! -

November! Never mind, there’s always plenty to cheer us all up, whatever the weather! This month, we look forward to camping holidays abroad, we drop in on a fantastic kitchen design studio in Dyke and we hear about care home fees, Armistice Day, “equity release”, bad backs, “Empty Nest Syndrome” and bathrooms for dreaming in! | In the hot seat

Bill PauleyNovember’s spotlight shines brightly on a well-known “Bourne character”, the hirsute Mr William Pauley! Carrying on a family tradition of market traders, (dating back to his great-grandfather selling walnuts in Peterborough Cathedral in 1890!) Bill has been purveying the finest fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants on Stamford, and latterly Bourne Market, since 1978. A drummer and singer of considerable repute, currently with “BRM” and “Reckless”, Bill’s contribution to the local rock music scene over many years has been immense, with the fund-raising, “Bill’s Birthday Bash” becoming an annual highlight! Besides music, travel, nature, photography and dogs are his main interests.

1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?“In the front room of our house in Cliff Crescent, Stamford, (known as “The Music Room”) where we would enjoy family sing-alongs and listen to a big, old valve radio. My fondest memories were of times spent with my mum, in the kitchen. In between cooking, she would sing and dance and play percussion on the saucepans.”2. WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?“My mum encouraged me, she believed in me and made learning fun. School was a bit “hit or miss”. I often got up very early with my dad to help set up the stall, then would be tired in class. Mum taught me multiplication through rhyme, rhythm and song.”3. WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY?“It would have to be Elvis Presley, despite the fried sandwiches of peanut butter and jelly! He changed the music scene, made it accessible

and inspired young people to make music. Alongside “The King”, I would like Michael Palin. He could tell stories from all around the world and add his own brand of humour.”4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS?“Optimistic, trusting, loyal, hard-working and humorous.”5. IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?“I would like to see Bourne celebrate the achievement of the BRM in real style, a centre for motor-racing, a museum. It had a massive impact on racing, world-wide. It could put Bourne on the tourist map as it’s one of the town’s biggest assets – something to be proud of.”6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?“Put aside your high-tech devices for a while, go out and meet with people, communicate, socialise and make real friends - before life passes you by!”

| Schools “The play’s the thing”Bourne Academy at The Key

On Tuesday 14th October, Bourne Academy paid tribute to 450 years of William Shakespeare and the centenary of the start of World War 1, by combining the two in their offering of “Hamlet”, for this year's Shakespeare Schools Festival.

he event, at the Key Theatre, Peterborough, also included Spalding High School, The Voyager and Thomas Deacon Academy. Standards were very high and an evening’s trio of tragedies, (“Titus Andronicus”, “Romeo and Juliet”, besides “Hamlet”), was followed by a much lighter-hearted, “Twelfth Night”. “Hamlet” opened the night strongly with its ensemble approach, contextual costumes and inclusive cast of mixed year groups (Years 8-10). Ted Fisk, Head of Drama at Bourne Academy, enthused, “We were incredibly proud of the students’ professionalism during the day, as technical rehearsals can be hard going, but every member of the thirty-strong cast was immensely focused, and wanted to make the school proud’. Director, Samantha Landers, supported by four assistant directors from Year 11, commented, “Students have been dedicated to this performance process since the beginning of this academic year and it is a short space of time in which to deliver this kind of performance. It could not have been achieved without the dedication and determination of these young performers here”. “The Year 11 students were delighted to pass on their experience to the younger years, and

the creative challenge to direct such a poignant performance is one that will stay with them for life”, added Hannah Hunt (Drama Instructor). Bourne Academy are presently busy with their whole-school musical ‘Bugsy Malone’ and the Shakespeare Festival is seen as another opportunity to reward keen performers from lower year groups, in order to gain much-needed experience, performing in a professional theatre. Year 10 performers, Craig Sleeman and Owen Rowntree shared the role of Hamlet which saw a strong symbolic use of costumes and characterisation, to make clear the doubling up of key roles. Despite the intense plot line and dark themes, the young student cast provided some excellent moments of intentional comedy to lighten the mood, which was well received by the audience.

“Empty-Nest-Syndrome” : ( or “Getting Shut Of Them At Last!)This time of the year sees the customary exodus of excited youngsters to university and, all of a sudden, the family faces the prospect of the “empty nest”. So, how are you going to cope? What can be done? Prepare for the departure well in advance, checking that s/he is well aware of the basic essentials for caring for themselves, (cooking, cleaning, budgeting etc.) Approach the oncoming time apart positively – it’s going to be one huge adventure, meeting new people in new places, and will involve lots of fun and eventual success. Re-assure them, though, that home is still only one journey away. Keep in touch. It’s never been easier. Thanks to Skype and Face-Time, gone are the weekly waits outside the public phone box in the rain, coins at the ready, and the long trudge back to the cold flat! Understand that “Empty-Nest-Syndrome” is, in fact, a psychological condition which can produce grief, usually affecting the mother the most. Feelings of sadness and even redundancy and unworthiness can follow. Try, as much as possible, to return to normal, seeing friends, getting out and fully immersing yourself in your normal routines. Start thinking of your own needs and those of

your partner, without having to factor in another individual at every turn. Whilst accepting the inevitable lonely feelings at times, think positively and look on the bright side! The fridge can breathe a sigh of relief! Utility bills will be decimated! That bathroom can become yours again! Feel immensely proud that you’ve brought up a child capable of going out into the world, surviving and thriving on their own ……… until, three years later, a graduate returns and asks……..!

Meningitis Memory Tree to Return to Crown Walk

2014 sees the fourth year of what has become a most impressive out-pouring of controlled emotion on the streets of Bourne. The “Meningitis Memory Tree” will be erected at the end of November once again, outside Stephanie’s in Crown Walk. Here, the public will be able to purchase from Stephanie’s shop, for a mere 50p, their bow and then place it on the tree, along with a message in memory of a loved one they may have lost. It all began nine years ago, when local mum, Hayley Pateman, tragically lost her seven month old son, Alexander to meningitis. Wishing to raise awareness of the condition and funds to tackle the killer disease, Hayley and her friend, Stephanie Romaine, initiated the idea of a Memory Tree. Last year, a total of £232 was raised and already, the bows are being created by ten year old, Grace Romaine for this year’s effort, in the hope that the kind people of Bourne and district can contribute even more to this well-deserving cause.

The Thory Story - Macmillan Coffee Morning Raises £770

On Saturday 27th September, Stevie and Helen Thory held their third “Macmillan Coffee Morning”, inviting lots of their family and friends to join them.

They ask that everyone kindly donates some home-made produce, such as cakes for their bring-and-buy table, along with items for a raffle. A couple of competitions from the “Macmillan Coffee Morning pack” boosted the total. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of everyone, they managed to raise a staggering £770 in just two hours and, on behalf of Macmillan, they would like to thank everyone who was involved in any way. Macmillan is such a worthwhile charity as cancer can, and sadly, does affect many lives and families. This year, it meant so much to Stevie and Helen, as they have both lost close family members to cancer. The coffee morning can be such an uplifting event for everyone and Stevie and Helen look forward to next year’s gathering.


NCT Classes: a Dad’s Viewby Richard DonaghyWhen I found out my wife was expecting, I was very excited, albeit very nervous. To alleviate any concerns, I was keen on attending NCT classes as I had heard many positive reviews of them. I had very limited previous contact with babies, I hadn’t even changed a nappy and didn’t feel very comfortable even holding a baby! So, I attended the course and immediately felt at ease; the things I was learning were really helping my knowledge-base, allaying concerns, and therefore helping my confidence grow. The course seemed to cover everything from relaxation techniques, birth plans, concerns, apprehension, nappy-changing, pain management, the birthing process, and post-birth (e.g. breastfeeding). Aside from what was learnt, I really enjoyed meeting other parents-to-be and also the support networks which the course provided. Anyway, the day came - I was at work and my wife contacted me to say she thought she was having contractions but we calmly calculated that I didn’t need to rush home, as labour could be some time. Later that evening, the contractions became more intense and we fully utilised our NCT ‘toolbox’ - this involved using our chosen method of pain management (TENS) but more importantly, relaxing - we had some dinner, drew the curtains, lit a candle, played some music, watched some TV, and I used some of the massage techniques taken from the class. I found that these were really important, not only because they really helped relax my wife through the contractions, but also because it was the only way I could physically help. And so, a calm journey to hospital! Had we not attended the NCTclasses, I was fully expecting a frantic, uninformed and nervous rush to get there. Through all the contractions, I did not once recall my wife raising her voice or screaming. She was ‘breathing through’ every contraction, so calm that I actually questioned whether labour

was happening, until the midwife stated that dilatation was already half way!! We had chosen a birthing pool for the birth because of its pain-relieving properties. Things continued to move along quickly and there was still no screaming or raised voices, although the industrial-sized bottle of Lucozade came in handy for our energy levels in the early hours! The ‘pushing’ stage soon came, and although voices became raised, they were certainly not the blood-curdling screams I had envisaged. We later moved out of the pool, due to the contractions slowing, but, with knowing that these things would happen, we just took it in our stride. Understanding what was going on through labour, knowing the actual birthing process, and having the tools to manage it, was instrumental to not only a memorable labour, but an enjoyable one. Although the labour didn’t exactly adhere to our birth plan, I look back on the experience fondly and give my thanks to the NCT classes. I stopped looking at labour as a medical procedure but instead saw it as a magical moment that should be enjoyed and celebrated. Two weeks into it and …………. fatherhood is great!

Pain in the Back? Could be the Sacroiliac!

Injury to the sacroiliac joint (near the dimples on a baby’s bottom!) is a common cause of back pain. It can occur simply whilst leaning forward slightly and twisting sideways, for example taking washing out of the washing machine or gardening! One common pattern of injury occurs when the driver of a vehicle places one foot on the brake before a collision. The impact through the foot on the brake is transmitted to the pelvis causing a twisting motion to this side of the pelvis. This can injure the sacroiliac joint on that side, resulting in pain. A similar mechanism occurs with a fall on one buttock. The force again causes a twisting motion to the pelvis and may injure the ligaments around the joint.

SymptomsWhat does the condition feel like?The most common symptoms from sacroiliac joint dysfunction are low back and buttock pain. The pain may affect one or both sides of the sacroiliac joint. It can spread across the pelvic region and radiate down the leg, all the way to the foot, and

may be confused with a disc problem in the lumbar spine. The pain may radiate into the groin area. People often feel muscle spasm in one or both of their buttock muscles.Problems with the sacroiliac

joint may make sitting difficult and may cause a person to sit with one buttock tilted up slightly. It is usually uncomfortable to sit flat in a chair. Walking generally eases the pain. Sacroiliac pain is typically worse with standing and walking, and improved when lying down, but not always.

TreatmentPatients often work with myself here at Pulse Practice to relieve their pain. After evaluating your condition, we can assign positions and exercises to ease your symptoms. We may design an exercise programme to improve the strength and control of your back and abdominal muscles. We are trained in manipulative techniques that attempt to treat the pain by manipulating the lower spinal segments. We may be able to show you how to adjust your posture yourself and ease the symptoms quite dramatically. Also, a variety of self-help methods will be demonstrated, to help you to help yourself prevent future episodes of possible pain.

| Council news‘HAVE YOUR SAY, HAVE IT YOUR WAY’ The Neighbourhood Plan SurveyFollowing a Public Meeting held in February to inform the public of a neighbourhood plan, it was decided that the next stage should be a survey through the local media to a) further inform the residents and b) to obtain feedback and support. It was decided by the Town Council to use ‘Discovering Bourne’ (a respected far- reaching, local community magazine) as the vehicle for this initiative. The survey achieved a 1.3% response rate (about average for this type of survey) and the results confirm many of the assumptions that had already been made. Only 13.3% of the respondents living in the parish actually work here, confirming the view that many residents of Bourne are purely “housing overnighters” who work away. It shows that the community has little commercial or industrial activity in relation to the population, beyond a small amount of retail activity, serving the community. 27.6% were retired, again confirming the elderly slant to the parish’s population profile. 44.1% of the respondents believe that job opportunities in Bourne are “poor”, while 11.8% consider them “totally inadequate”. Despite the fact that many people are purely using the parish for their accommodation, 42.6% of the respondents believe that community spirit is “quite strong” and 7.4% consider it to be “very strong”. With regard to housing, 39.8% think that private housing is “excellent”, whilst 1.5% think it “totally inadequate.” 33.8% of respondents believe social housing in the area is also “excellent”. As for green spaces and the environment, 45.6% of people rated them as “good” in the area. To support this, when asked about the three best things about the parish, 15.5% of comments listed “open green spaces” as the top of their three best things. This was matched by

“schools” at 15.5%, “community feel” 14.4% and “safety/low crime rate” 8.0%. Seeking views on leisure and shopping opportunities, 44.1% felt that leisure facilities in the area were “average”, whilst shopping received a thumbs down as being poor at 38.2%. The question, “What three things would you improve in the parish?” led to 16.0% listing “variety and number of shops”, 9.8% going for “youngsters’ play areas”, whilst 10.4% mentioned “traffic”, 7.4% “facilities for youth” and 7.4% “job opportunities”. To reinforce this, when asked what was the one single thing that they would change about the parish, 22.4% wanted the introduction of more shops with a better variety. 16.4% felt the importance of a complete by-pass road was important, and 9.0% felt that something needs to be done about the lack of facilities for teenagers. Regarding the respondents’ opinion of the main priority for the Neighbourhood Plan, the introduction of more varied shops recorded 19%, followed by a complete by-pass, (11.9%) and more facilities for the youth of the town, (10.7%). It would appear that the residents of the parish have a consensus of opinion that the following areas are of concern and need to be addressed a) shopping facilities, b) by- passing the town centre, c) facilities for the young, d) job opportunities, e) youngsters’ play areas. The Council were pleased with the response from the public and would like to thank all of those connected with making it a success and look forward to taking this project forward. Out of those that responded, 33 said that they would like to be involved in building a neighbourhood plan and will be contacted by the Town Council to progress with this initiative.


ARMISTICE DAY

November 11th

This year has seen the centenary of the start of World War One, with events having taken place throughout the world. However, Tuesday November 11th will be as significant a date as ever, as at the eleventh hour, on this, the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the nation joins in the customary Two Minute Silence, to remember the sacrifice made by the thousands in World War One and other conflicts since then. Ever since 1956, when the War Memorial in South Street, Bourne, was erected, there were only included on the two bronze plaques, the names of those servicemen whose lives were lost in the World Wars of 1914-18, 1939-45 and subsequent conflicts. However, the recent dedication on September 21st, of 22 small memorial stones with accompanying wooden crosses, either side of the approach, has provided a most welcome addition to our beautiful “Memorial Gardens”. Each of the stones and crosses represents a regiment or arm of service to which those who gave their lives belonged. For example, the Lincolnshire Regiment, (to whom 43 of the names were affiliated) is represented, along with the Royal Navy, (with 7) and the Sherwood Foresters, (with 6). Others included range from the Parachute Regiment, the Norfolk Regiment and the Royal Air Force to the Royal Artillery and the Labour Corps.

“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”The nights are drawing in. Soon there will be the smell of wood fires and the sound of small explosions with multi coloured flashes of light. October and November bring with them the annual appearance of fireworks. For many, these are wonderful displays that leave adults and children

gazing up to the sky in awe. However, to others, including pets, these can bring fear, misery and pain (including my dog!) Fireworks can only be sold from premises that are registered with the Fire Service and which hold a Certificate of Registration. Therefore, fireworks sold in the ‘open air’, from market stalls and car boot sales are illegal. It is also worth noting that, if they are sold illegally, how sure can you be that they are safe to use and marked with the British Standard mark BS 7114? There are different categories of firework which relate to the safe distance you need to stand from them. Category 1 fireworks pose a minimal hazard and are basically for indoor use. Category 2 fireworks, also known as “garden fireworks”, require a minimum of 5 metres, whilst Category 3 “display fireworks” require a 25 metres distance. Category 4 fireworks are for professional use only and are not for sale to the public. It is illegal for any person under the age of 18 to buy or possess an ‘adult’ firework except indoor fireworks. It is also illegal for anyone, other than a professional firework business, to

possess a category 4 firework. Not surprisingly, it follows that it is an offence for anyone to sell a category 4 firework to a person not authorised to possess one, to sell a category 2 or 3 firework to a person who is under 18 and to sell a category 1 firework to anyone under 16. Did you know that there is a firework ‘curfew’, meaning that fireworks cannot be used between the hours of 11pm and 7am? There are exceptions to this, being Bonfire Night (between 12 midnight and 7am), New Year, Diwali and the Chinese New Year (1am to 7am). There are numerous offences relating to the use of fireworks in or within a certain distance of a highway. Basically, it is an offence to throw or ignite a firework in or into any highway, street or public place. Further offences are committed if the highway is damaged. There is a very old piece of legislation called the Town Police Clauses Act 1847, which has some strange and bizarre sections, (so much so that I may devote an article to it in the future!) However, one section states that it is an offence to “wantonly make a bonfire or discharge a firework in a street to the obstruction, annoyance or danger of residents or passers by” (Town Police Clauses Act 1847, section 28). I love the wording! There are, of course, offences where fireworks are used to deliberately hurt others or damage property. These are covered by the relevant legislation for assaults and criminal damage, which I will cover in the not too distant future. Bonfire night is a great family occasion, which marks a very important and dramatic event in our history. It is important to recognise this event and enjoy the spectacle, but do so safely. When moving into, or helping a loved one move into, a care home, knowing what funding is available can be very confusing. Only the person requiring care should be means-tested. Property occupied by a partner is disregarded and only 50% of any private pension should be taken into account. The local authority will take into account 50% of any joint savings.

If your assets, which may include your property, are calculated to be above £23,250, you will, in most cases, be expected to pay privately for your own care. This is known as “self- funding”.

Once your capital is below £23,250, you can seek local authority assistance. However, if the home costs more than the local authority usually pays, and it won’t reduce its fees, you could be in the difficult situation of either finding a source of top-up or seeking less expensive accommodation.

If you have a disability or complex medical problem, you might qualify for free NHS “Continuing Care”. It’s designed to help you

There’s no clear-cut list of health conditions or illnesses that qualify for funding, and not everyone with ongoing health needs will be eligible. The assessment is quite strict and “being frail” isn’t enough! The only sure way to know if you’re eligible for “Continuing Care” is to ask your GP or social worker to arrange an assessment.

Remember, circumstances change so, even if you were turned down for “Continuing Care” funding initially, you should make sure you have your situation regularly reviewed.

Finance | Legal | Business | Culture | Bourne The past three months have continued to see growth in the membership of the Bourne Busi-ness Chamber as visitors find a warm welcome and common ground with a diverse set of individuals and organisations within the group and almost everyone joins the group after their initial visit. The relaxed, but business like atmosphere seems to work well for everyone.

Recently we have enjoyed talks covering a wide spread of subjects including; trade mark law, an introduction to NFU Mutual and advice on how to use independent travel agents to organise your vacation. We also had a visit from the local police. No, not because of noise complaints from over-zealous speakers but a brief by the local force on what they do to help protect the businesses and homes in the Bourne area.

In September a handful of our members visited the Houses of Parliament, a trip organised by Nick Boles MP following his visit to the group earlier this year. The group met their HoP representative, who took them on a 75 minute tour which included the Peers Central and Members Lobby, House of Commons and the House of Lords. Also included in the tour was a visit to the Jewel Tower, which is a 14th-century surviving element of the royal Palace of Westminster.

Don’t move in too soon!

hould divorcing wives or husbands, who become involved in another relationship, see their divorce settlements reduced as a result? Mr. Justice Mostyn said, in a case in the Family Division of the High Court last month, that such relationships were “a significant fly in the ointment”, when the Court was deciding how much money husbands should give wives on a marriage breakup. (It is usually that way round). The case in question involved a journalist and her estranged husband who came from a wealthy family. The woman had started a new relationship nine months before with a man who was about to buy a house. The predicament facing the Judge was whether he should take the new relationship into account, when assessing the wife’s needs for re-housing. Such an approach is actually not good law at the present time. The intention to cohabit in the near future, or even cohabitation itself, is usually viewed by the Court as unimportant, because there is no legal force to a live-in relationship – it is only marriage which brings with it rights and obligations. This is despite years of campaigning by various interested bodies, trying to get cohabitation formalised in the eyes of the law, especially for women who can risk being stranded, penniless and homeless, even after a very long relationship. Judge Mostyn has therefore not made new law, but could this be the start of a trend of the courts to give greater weight to the relevance of cohabitation in divorce cases? So, just a note of warning….

How to Manage Files & FoldersBack to basics this month with a look at Files and Folders, which I know many people can find confusing. The best way of thinking about the struc-ture of your PC’s folders and files is to compare it to a real filing cabinet and how you store information in “real life” tactile form.

In the first illustration, we can see a standard metal, two drawer filing cabinet.Inside those drawers we have a series of hanging folders, one for each customer.Inside those customer folders, there are individual document wallets for the various subjects associated with that customer…. billing, letters, sales etc.Finally, inside those folders, we keep the individual letters, invoices, statements etc.

PC systems use the same concept for organising your file storage.Using the real filing cabinet as a comparison, we can see that our main User Folder (usually called by your user name) correlates directly to the old filing cabinet.Inside that User Folder we find our ‘hanging folder equivalents’, the folders called Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music etc.Inside those, we can create our ‘plastic wallet equivalents’, various subjects to keep things in order, such as Business, Home, Finance etc. or, in the Pictures folder, things like Holidays, Family, Web Images, Birthdays etc. These are known as sub-folders.

As you can see by comparing the two illustrations, looking at your data in this way has a direct correlation to the ‘old’ world of masses of paper organised in a cabinet in a logical manner. As with the filing cabinet, we could throw our correspondence directly into the drawers and not bother with using hanging folders and paper wallets, but if we ever wanted to find something we’d have to sift through masses of paper to find it. Similarly on the PC, if you make the effort to store ‘like’ items in folders and sub-folders, rather than just saving everything on the desktop or in the main Documents folder, then you will find it a lot easier to locate the item that you are searching for.

Finally, inside those sub-folders we keep our actual files, whether that be a word processed letter, a photo from a holiday, an invoice from the window cleaner etc.

There are many retired people managing on small pensions and limited savings who live in properties of significant value which can be used either as a source of income or a lump sum without having to leave the property. Any money received through equity release schemes is normally tax free and you are able to use it in any way you wish, whether it be to support your lifestyle in retirement, buy a boat or even use it as part of your inheritance tax planning.There are two main types of equity release: vOne is where a company lends you money against the value of your home – this is a lifetime mortgage on which, in general, you do not pay the interest but instead it “rolls up” over the term of the loan. vThe other type is where you actually sell all or part of your property to a company and this is called home reversion plan where you are given a lifetime tenancy of the property, which we do not advise on.All equity release companies who are members of Safe Homes Income Plans (SHIP) guarantee that, regardless of house prices, you will be able to continue living in your own home until you die or move to a care home, in most cases there is also a guarantee that there will be a small amount of equity in the property at that time and that you will never find yourself in negative equity. The maximum amount you will be able to obtain under a plan is linked to your age, health and the property value. The older you are, the larger the percentage you will be offered there may also be larger percentages available if you

are in poor health. However, equity release is a big decision and might not be the best or only solution. You should always consider other ways to raise money such as moving to a smaller property and ensuring you are claiming any benefits to which you’re entitled. Consider what might happen should you wish to move house, what impact it may have upon existing benefits, how your children feel about it and most importantly, take independent legal and financial advice before deciding to release equity from your home. Getting quality advice may save you and your family a considerable amount of time, expense and stress. WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS

Lincolnshire Police have recently warned about two of the most common, currently reported scams, which are:1. Postal / Telephone ScamsLottery and prize draw scams are where victims are told they have won a large cash prize but are asked to send a fee to release it.THIS IS A SCAM - No genuine lottery or competition would ask you to send money to claim a prize.

2. Courier ScamsScammers call the victim claiming to be from their bank or the police, to tell them their debit or credit card needs collecting. The scammer then instructs the victim to hang up and call their bank or the police in order to verify this is a genuine request. However, the criminal stays on the line tricking the person into thinking they’re calling the bank/police. The fraudster will then ask the victim to disclose their PIN number before sending a courier to collect the card. The victim is told the card is going to the bank to be changed, but actually the scammer keeps it and uses it to buy goods or take money from the victim’s account. THIS IS A SCAM - If you receive a similar call, end the conversation, SAY NO, put the telephone receiver down. Then leave it down for at least five minutes to disconnect the call completely.

If you answer a call on your mobile telephone, SAY NO, end the call; do not connect again for at least five minutes. If you receive a similar telephone call please report details to Lincolnshire Police, Tel 101 (non emergency) or 999 in an emergency. STAY SCAM SAFE

The annual Len Pick Memorial Evening, to be held on the 28th January 2015, will bring well- known TV presenter, Bill Turnbull, as guest speaker to Bourne, to speak on his life and career. The evening is promoted by the Len Pick Trust, a charity founded by the late Mr Len Pick for the general benefit of the townspeople of Bourne. Trust Chairman, Charles Houseago said, “We organise this annual event to not only remember our founder’s benefaction, but also to give our stakeholders the opportunity of hearing well-known speakers with a special story to tell. Bill is a well-known and respected television professional, who, I am sure, will enthral the audience with the story of his varied career as a journalist and presenter, during which time he has reported from more than thirty countries, and for four years was the TV news foreign correspondent in Washington, D.C. Some of the notable stories that he has covered during his career include the Lockerbie Air Disaster, The Romanian Revolution in 1989 and also during his time in Washington, the American Presidential Election, the O J Simpson Trial and the Monica Lewinsky Scandal. ne of the more unusual establishments in Bourne during the early years of the 20th century was a sanctuary for horses which were past their working lives and about to be put down.

At that time, there was a brisk trade in buying them for slaughter, usually in callous and painful circumstances, or they were sent to the Continent for a similar fate and after a distressing sea voyage, often in cruel and unhygienic conditions, they were killed for food.

Miss Ada Cole (1860-1930) was so distressed by what was happening that in 1927 she founded a charity known as the International League for the Protection of Horses in an attempt to bring about reforms and the following year she set up the Klondyke Horse Sanctuary on land off West Road, Bourne, to demonstrate that horses could be slaughtered humanely.

The sanctuary had a good reputation during its years of operation under the motto “A little model horse abattoir” and its horse ambulance soon became a familiar sight picking up sick animals in the Bourne district. There was also a large paddock with good grazing, a pond fed by an underground spring, a crew yard and comfortable stables.

An agreement was reached with Messrs T W Mays and Sons Ltd, the local fellmongers, to run the abattoir with a representative from the league

permanently in attendance and by 1933, the number of horses handled annually had reached over 700. Improvements to buildings and services made the Klondyke the most up-to-date horse abattoir in the country and by the end of 1946 it was handling almost 1,000 horses a year which were being brought in by road and rail.

But the general trade in horses began to change as mechanisation reduced their numbers on the farms. The ownership of the abattoir subsequently passed to Messrs Mays and in 1958, the league reported that the company had proved that humane and commercial interests could work together successfully to obviate cruelty in slaughterhouses although by now, the number of horses passing through was declining and by 1960 the figure had been reduced to 120.

The abattoir continued to operate until 1973 when the sanctuary closed down and the buildings demolished and much of the site has been redeveloped for new housing. Few people in Bourne today know of the name Klondyke or the venture associated with it yet under its auspices, more than 20,000 horses were slaughtered there in less than fifty years.

On Saturday 6th December at 7.30pm, Thurlby Methodist Church looks forward to welcoming Woven Chords, Stamford’s own Community Choir. Under the dynamic leadership of Musical Director Liz Underhill, the choir will perform a stunning selection of world music, including traditional Carols, as thoughts turn to the nativity. All songs are sung a cappella and the audience will experience the delights of a Polynesian fishing song, a Corsican hunting song, a Hebrew wedding song as well as popular Christmas Carols and songs such as Gaudete and the Coventry Carol. Woven Chords was established nineteen years ago. Their repertoire of over 200 songs covers most parts of the globe: Eastern Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Antipodes and Polynesia, Europe and Great Britain with harmonies drawn from centuries-old oral traditions. From gospel to work songs, from haunting chants to rousing celebrations, there is something for everyone. Performances are lively, dynamic and rich in musical diversity and delight audiences of all ages and musical tastes. recently took the nippers to see Posh v Oldham Athletic and, as we were pretty tight on time to get to Peterborough from Bourne, we took the car, but it’s a good idea to look at the options available to you for travelling out of Bourne. We have suffered a few road works of late, affecting the main north-south flow through the town but, without congestion, the bus service taking 40 to 45 minutes, is not bad value – a “Group Day Return Ticket” costs £11.20. When the crowd kicks out of London Road, it falls precisely in line with the bus service, running every fifteen minutes out of Queensgate. Getting to away games is a different matter, of course, but our nearest mainline train services take some beating, with an early booking. I have had two doctors travel to me on the trains from Kings Cross and Nottingham for my intensive driving courses, so reasonable are the train fares. Others

This is not literal, by the way!

One of the most common faults with hitting ironshots is the desire to help to get the ball into the air. This tends to be caused by leaning back through impact, and flicking the wrists. It is almost as if the golfer is wanting to scoop the ball into the air. The problem with this is that it can cause “fat shots”, or you hit the ground first before the ball.

To help prevent this from happening, think of yourknees finishing together at the end of the swing.As you swing through impact, think of making yourright knee kiss your left knee. By doing this, youwill swing towards the target, allowing the loft ofthe club to get the ball airborne. You will also finishbalanced and able to admire your cleanly-struckiron shot.
