Dear readers, Have you ever received an email from your bank, asking you to ‘update’ or ‘confirm’ your personal details? Beware, this is known as Phishing (pronounced ‘fishing’) and is a scam designed to trick you into revealing your personal information and passwords so that fraudsters can access your account, run up bills, or commit financial crimes in your name. Phishing emails can look as though they come from an email address from a reputable organisation however, it is relatively simple to create a fake entry in the “From:” box. The emails are sent out at random to bulk email address lists. The fraudsters will usually not know your name or anything else about you, and will address you in vague terms like “Dear Valued Customer”.

So, take a closer look at the email, does it look “phishy”? Does the email address you in vague terms? Ask for personal information? Ask you click on a link or download an attachment? Come from an organisation you don’t usually deal with? Contain odd sp£lling, have poor grammar or use CaPiTals in strange places?

Edena pleasure to meet the many volunteers and to see how the Food Bank is organised. Thanks must go to the people of Bourne for their incredible generosity in donating food and to Sainsburys and Tesco for their support.

We spent an evening at the Bourne cricket ground with the Australian International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians. They take a tour in Great Britain once every 4 years and always come to Bourne to take part in a friendly cricket match; the Australian team won but I guess their joy was short lived as their national team were soundly thrashed the following day at Lords! We all enjoyed a fish and chip supper and then the Australian team were presented with a trophy which hopefully Bourne will win back in 4years time! The Australian team donated all their match fines, a sum of £1100, towards replacing the worn out pottery kiln at Bourne Resource Centre Sense. This was a very generous gesture on their part. Thanks must go to them and to Norman Brown for organising this event.

Steve Jones, Chairman of the Bourne Round Table invited myself and my wife to their annual dinner and what a splendid affair it was. So much thought and attention to detail had been put into the evening with a James Bond theme. Again we met many young people from Bourne and from all over our County who give up many hours fundraising for very worthy causes.

What a privilege to attend the 100th Birthday Party of Mary Parker, at Meadow Close with her family and friends. When my wife and I joined her she said that she felt a little overwhelmed by it all but Mary certainly looked as if she was enjoying the celebrations and many photographs were being taken of this incredible achievement.

J uly has been a busy month for us. We have visited both of the Bourne Primary Academies this month. The Bourne Abbey CoE Primary Academy School Year 6 presented Jungle Book. The singing was excellent, the acting very good - I could hear every word. Our congratulations have to go to Mrs Laura Collins who directed and choreographed this show and to the many staff who gave up weekends to rehearse and produce props etc.

We also attended Bourne Westfield Primary Academy for their Year 6 Presentation Evening where the children entertained the parents with beautiful singing, music from the school rock band and excellent pieces of writing. Then the children were presented with certificates and cups. It was a lovely evening but tinged with sadness as these children were leaving Primary Education behind and we know that the children are so lucky to have such good primary schools in Bourne and the surrounding villages and we also know that we have two excellent Secondary Schools where all the children are given the best opportunities to reach their full potential . We should all be very proud of the five schools we have in the town including Bourne Willoughby School who also do an outstanding job.

People with diabetes can develop complications before they realise they even have a problem.

How can diabetes affect my feet?Diabetes can cause two main problems that can affect your feet:

Diabetic neuropathy

Uncontrolled diabetes can damage your nerves. If you have damaged nerves in your legs and feet, you might not feel heat, cold, or pain. This lack of feeling is called “sensory diabetic neurop-athy.” If you do not feel a cut or sore on your foot because of neuropathy, the cut could get worse and become infected. The muscles of the foot may not function properly because the nerves that make the muscles work are damaged. This could cause the foot to not align properly and create too much pressure in one area of the foot.

Peripheral vascular disease

Diabetes also affects the flow of blood. Without good blood flow, it takes longer for a sore or cut to heal. Poor blood flow in the arms and legs is called “peripheral vascular disease.” Peripheral vascular disease is a circulation disorder that affects blood vessels away from the heart. If you have an infection that will not heal because of poor blood flow, you are at risk of developing ulcers or gangrene (the death of tissue due to a lack of blood).

Tips for regular diabetes foot care

Daily care

Wash and dry your feet with mild soap and warm water. Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, an area more prone to fungal infections. Use lotion on your feet to prevent cracking, but don’t put the lotion between your toes.

Do not soak feet, or you’ll risk infection if the skin begins to break down. If you have nerve damage, take care with water temperature. You risk burning your skin if you can’t feel that the water is too hot.

Weekly careTrim toenails straight across with a nail clipper. You can prevent ingrown toenails if you don’t round the corners of the nails or cut down the sides.

What is Health?

Before you read this article – try asking yourself the question, “What is Health?” f you are feeling really keen, write down your answer. If you have written down something that means “not being sick”, then you have responded in a way that most people in the Western world would have done. If you are thinking holistically though – this is not enough. The absence of pain or illness is not sufficient as a yardstick if you are trying to lead a life that is full on a spiritual, physical and emotional level.

The Japanese health educator and philosopher, George Oshawa developed the following indicators. They are obviously somebody else’s ideas but I think that they are worth pondering. He considered that the healthy person would have the following qualities of health:-

• Vitality of thought and action. Can you make quick responses at work and play? Do you have a zest for life?• An appetite for life. A healthy appetite is a sign of good health. By appetite I mean an appetite for the things that life has to offer – not just food. Being able to discern for one’s self in a non-dogmatic and independent way what our body and spirit needs is a vital way of maintaining wellbeing.• Relaxation and sleep. Good sleep is healing for the body and soul.• Good memory. If we are refreshed by good sleep and

nourished by our food and environment then we are more able to organise the experiences of the day for future reference.• Good humour. If we can laugh at ourselves and with others then we have a valuable life skill.• Clarity of thought and action. Knowing the difference between rash and responsible action is a challenge that requires self-reflection and a dispassionate assessment of the effects of what we do.• Appreciation of nature. A healthy person recognises the environment as a sacred space. Ecological living comes naturally when we are healthy.

This definition of health is quite wide reaching. Each item has many causes and effects and many of them go beyond us as an individual. Have think about the implications and make an action plan on an area that you think you can improve easily. If you start to improve one aspect of your holistic self then the others will follow. What do osteopaths treat?Commonly treated conditions include back and neck pain, postural problems, sporting injuries, muscle and joint deterioration, restricted mobility and occupational ill-health.What is the difference between an Osteopath / Chiropractor and a Physiotherapist?Essentially very little. he School Council at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy have set their sights on causes further afield than just the school this year and they were so proud to hand over a cheque to a very worthwhile charity. After visiting the School Council at Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy, the children felt inspired to find out more about a charity that Bourne Abbey have been supporting. ‘Friends of Nyansakia’ is a group who work hard to help schools in Nyansakia in Kenya. The School Council at Bourne Westfield invited one of the Trustees of the charity, Martin McKenna to talk to the whole school about their amazing fundraising. The children could not believe that the Nyansakia Primary School has only 9

teachers and approximately 1000 pupils and that it only costs £2.50 to feed a child for a month through the feeding programme they have helped set up. The children at Bourne Westfield decided to have a non-uniform day and donate half of the money raised to help. Martin and Terry Westwood (Co-founder and trustee) were delighted to receive a cheque for £260.

Children at Westfield have many more ideas for fundraising in the future to help them employ more teachers in Nyansakia, extend the feeding programme and to assist in setting up medical provisions. Watch this space!

Recycling MattersSainsbury’s is aiming to be the UK’s greenest grocer and as part of this initiative the store wants to offer a convenient one-stop shop for the household recycling needs of its customers. The supermarket in Exeter Street is already offering a wide range of recycling facilities including battery and carrier bag recycling – but wants the public to let them know what else is needed.

Outside by the delivery entrance there are recycling banks for clothes and shoes and the store is looking to introduce one or two more. Store Manager Nicki Richardson said: “We intend to make recycling even easier for our customers.“We would be interested in knowing if the town has a preference for what comes in? It could be cans, glass or plastic bottles?” Nicki has asked if people can go up to the customer service desk and let staff know their preferences to help management make a decision.

In 2011 Sainsbury’s launched its sustainability plan featuring 20 ambitions it intends to achieve by 2020. The plan’s goals include putting all waste to positive use, reducing own brand packing by half (compared to 2005), reducing carbon emissions across all own-brand products by 50% and ensuring the supply chain approach is sustainable in areas of water vulnerability.The store is responding to figures produced by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), which announced that the UK food and drink industry, and UK households, produce 18.4 million tonnes of waste, costing £17 billion each year. There were an estimated 7.2 million tonnes of household food waste in the UK in 2010.

Landfill space is becoming increasingly scarce, and more expensive. At the same time, reusing waste as a valuable resource is making businesses think differently about how to move beyond waste reduction to eliminating waste from the supply chain altogether. Sainsburys is dedicated to reducing waste by using resources

more efficiently, and are doing this through better stock control management and more accurate sales forecasting.

Sainsbury’s is working with Palm Recycling, a leading provider of Bring Banks, and Oxfam and Valpak, to introduce a new recycling system. Designed to increase recycling rates and reduce local authority costs, it also provides a more aesthetically-pleasing and customer-friendly facility, and helps councils fulfil their waste reporting obligations.

The new facilities have standardised recycling containers for mixed paper and card, mixed glass, mixed plastics, mixed cans, textiles and small waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The containers also have the familiar Recycle Now logo and are colour-coded to help customers select the right container.

Q&ACONVERTING LONG WEB URLS (REFERENCE LINKS) TO SHORT ONESAs you will have seen, some internet addresses are incredibly lengthy. In the Q&A sections below I will be using a service that converts long web links to much easier to use short ones, a service provided by bitly.com. The tools at bitly are free to use and invaluable for use in articles and other similar publications. MY PC FANS ARE NOISY AND KEEP SPEEDING UP!The most common cause of this is dust contamination. Cleaning up a desktop case is fairly easy, laptops a little more difficult. Use a soft brush, vacuum cleaner nozzle and a careful hand to remove all internal dirt and fluff, especially around the fans. See http://bit.ly/litespc2 for more information. I’M USING AVG FREE BUT IT KEEPS ASKING ME TO PAY!There are two versions of AVG; a copy that is entirely free and a ‘paid’ copy that has a ‘free trial’ but then costs around £35 per annum to use. At some point you have upgraded, probably unintentionally, to the trial version. It is simple to fix using the Windows Uninstall feature. For more details go to http://bit.ly/litespc3 I’M USING WINDOWS LIVE EMAIL BUT IT KEEPS ASKING ME TO LOGIN!This is a very common problem at the moment. Just to confuse everyone Microsoft called both their Hotmail online service Live Mail and also their PC desktop application ‘offline’ reader, Windows Live Mail. The problem relates to the desktop application. Originally designed for use with the online service there is a setting in Windows Live Mail that, if ticked, requires the user to login to the online Windows Live Mail service using their Microsoft account. This is fine if you are using your Microsoft Account for email (including Hotmail, Live Mail and Outlook.com) but not if you are using other email services. The fix is

to remove the tick from in the Options for Windows Live Mail. How to do this can be found at http://bit.ly/litespc4 HOW DO I GET RID OF DELTA SEARCH IN MY INTERNET BROWSER?A common PC infection that I see locally is the hijacking of your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox Browser, Chromes etc;) by Delta Search. Make no mistake Delta Search can be categorised as malware. It changes your default internet search to their Delta Servers and is the cause of the spread of PC infections through lack of adequate control. You need to remove this as your search tool and replace it with your chosen option (Google, Bing, Ask etc;). Removal involves a number of steps and instructions can be found at the link http://bit.ly/litespc5 MY WINDOWS 8 APPLICATIONS WON’T UPDATE?Windows 8 has proven very problematic and largely unpopular. Fortunately Microsoft has listened to their customers and at the end of Summer 2013 they will release version 8.1 (also known as Windows Blue). This update will be free for all Windows 8 users and available via the Windows Update process. Annoyingly one problem that many people have suffered is the failure of the Windows 8 application update process itself. Unfortunately the fix for this is a little scary for the uninitiated but if you follow the instructions at http://bit.ly/litespc6 you should be able to resolve the issue. Investing in a stocks and shares Isa

he entire 2013/14 tax year Isa allowance of £11,520 can be invested into a stocks and shares Isa. There is a vast and ever increasing range of different investment options from which to choose, offering not only huge flexibility in how you invest but also access to the whole range of global stock and bond markets. For the investor who knows what they want, Self-select Isa’s offer the most flexible

approach, allowing you to choose your own shares or collective investment funds. These schemes cover a range of asset classes and markets, so you can make up your own portfolio - or use your Isa allowance to target one specific investment to complement your wider portfolio. However, choosing your own shares can be a risky approach and, unless it forms part of a wider share portfolio, can concentrate your investment around the fortunes of just one

Many investors therefore choose to put their Isa allowance into something more diversified, such as a collective scheme or fund, which reduces risk by accessing a whole selection of shares for a relatively small investment. There are many funds to choose from and some prioritise income and some capital growth. Over the long term, those with a higher equity content have generally offered higher returns than equivalent investments in cash, bonds or commercial property. However, equities can go down as well as up and have been volatile. Funds are grouped into categories to give you an indication of their aims. For example, the ‘Mixed Investment 20-60% shares’ category will have no more than 60% in shares. More aggressive funds may be found in, for example, the UK All Companies, UK Smaller Companies or Global Emerging Markets sectors. If you need income from your Isa then you may wish to consider a fund that delivers regular dividend, rental or interest payments. The three main choices are equity income, commercial property or bonds. There are a number of funds that combine these asset classes together, thereby producing income from a more

diversified portfolio. Ultimately, the choices you make for your Isa have to reflect your aims and goals and sit within any wider portfolio you might hold. Appealing alcovesMy website attracts hits from all over the world and one of the phrases often used in search criteria is ‘what to do with alcoves’, so here is a piece I hope you enjoy. An alcove is an internal architectural recess in a room usually no more than 2m wide and usually less than 1m deep. In the UK we often see them either side of a chimney breast but they may not be symmetrical. If you are lucky enough to have this feature in your home here are ten tips for alcoves:-An alcove that is at least 40cm deep could be turned into an informal seating area with a built-in bench type unit with cushions on top and storage beneath.An alcove that is around 30cm deep is ideal for a bookcase, freestanding or built-in. This can be combined with cupboard storage.Enhance both daylight and artificial lighting by hanging a large mirror on the recessed wall. For an even more glamorous look and to show off a special piece of furniture or artwork use mirror on the three walls from floor to ceiling - wow!For a cosy atmosphere hang drapes with tie backs on both sides of the alcove or use a larger piece of fabric and draw to one side only. If you prefer modern minimalism and find the alcove doesn’t work for you, remove it by installing a false wall across the recess. A good carpenter could put in an invisible door so you can use the space for storage if you need it.

ISIS Doggy Day Care is just like a kiddie’s nursery but for dogs. Our Day Care Centre has all the creature comforts of home combined together with a structured day of play, exercise and rest, all tailored to your own individual dogs needs making their time with us lots of fun and games. All of the Doggy Day Care packages include one countryside walk, lots of play and heaps of love and affection delivered by a committed, appropriately trained team. The Doggy Day Care Centre will be open from 7 AM to 7 PM, five days per week, 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturdays and between 10 AM and 4 PM on Sundays. any young people are finding it very difficult to get their foot on the housing ladder so it is only natural that parents and grandparents want to help by loaning or giving them money towards the purchase of a property.

Before doing so there are a wide range of matters that need to be considered:-

If the money is to be a gift If you were to die within 7 years of making the gift, inheritance tax might need to be paid on that gift. Also, how would you feel if your child cohabited and the relationship came to an end and the ex-partner sought to claim an interest in the property which your child had purchased from the monies you had gifted?

What if your child got into financial difficulties and the house was their main asset?

Are you happy for them to secure loans on the property?

If the money is to be a loan How do you want that loan protected? Do you require interest to be added to the money loaned? Is your child going to make monthly repayments? What would happen if you fell out with your child and they refused to pay you back what had been loaned?

Do you require a Charge to be registered against the property? This means you will be repaid out of the sale proceeds if the house is ever sold?

If your child is already having a mortgage to buy the property then any funds you gift or loan them will need to be brought to the mortgage company’s attention.

Many parents believe that no protection is required and they will make their own private family arrangement. The problem with family arrangements are that people never consider or like to consider the possibility of future problems.

ne of the notable features of the English landscape that dates back to the Roman occupation of Britain 2,000 years ago is the Car Dyke, a watercourse of 75 miles in length, starting at Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire then crossing the River Welland and entering Lincolnshire at Deeping St James before passing through Bourne on its way to Lincoln.

The name is most likely to have derived from an old Norse personal name, hence Kárr’s dik which subsequently became Car Dyke, and since the 18th century, it has been recognised as of major historical importance, possibly the second longest Roman monument after Hadrian’s Wall, built to carry soldiers and supplies by raft and low barge to the armies in the north and later used for the movement of goods for trade and as a drainage channel.

The waterway also became useful for transporting stone from various quarrying operations in the county, a valuable commodity in the construction of houses and important buildings such as churches, and in 1717, a bell weighing 12 cwt was delivered on a raft from Henry Penn’s foundry at Peterborough for installation at Lincoln Cathedral, passing through Dyke village, thus indicating that the waterway was still navigable more than 1,500

years after it was built.

In most places today, the Car Dyke is difficult to identify except for those who are seeking it out because as the fen has been intensively drained since the 17th century, it is indistinguishable from any of the other watercourses which are a feature of this part of Eastern England but can best be seen locally to the south of the town where it runs alongside the main A15 trunk road and past the village church at Thurlby, behind Eastgate and Bedehouse Bank where it joins the Bourne Eau, in Manning Road where it crosses underneath the carriageway on its way north, and then at other locations along the route, notably Dyke, which takes its name from the waterway, and Dunsby Fen where it has a particular prominence.

In 1807, it was described as being 60 feet wide in places with a broad, flat bank on either side, but today it is much narrower and even choked with weed in some places but although no longer navigable, still serving a useful function as an integral part of the rural drainage system and as a valuable attraction to wildlife.
