The “Discovering Magazines” family is proud to announce the safe and welcome arrival, this month, of “Discovering

Deeping”, a sister for Bourne, Whittlesey and March. Mother and baby are well, (although exhausted and in need of sleep!)

Yes, our wings are indeed spreading, and we hope that our contributors and you, the Bourne and district readers, will all be able to benefit as a result of hearing what our southern neighbours are offering to their public. For starters, we highlight Market Deeping’s Iron Horse Ranch House for you in this issue, whilst Deeping

readers are hearing about Bourne’s fabulous Wild Heart music shop/café.

Summer events are now in full swing, with Bourne’s Summer Carnival and the Classic Car and Bike Show due very soon. We hope you can all make the most of what our town has to offer. The Beer Festival certainly showed recently what fantastic hard work and dedication can achieve for the town and its residents.

Welcome to our July edition...

Claire x

John

Wall-to wall sunshine at last, and thoughts are now on the sporty outdoors for some. Overheard recently: “It’s

the fear of getting caught that scares us sprinters,” she told the radio interviewer. “If anyone ever suspected me of taking dope, I’d run a mile.” (In record time too, if she sprinted it, with or without drugs!) The Ashes, Ascot and Wimbledon are nearly upon us … and next season’s football fixtures appeared this week. Oh well, that’s the English summer for you!

This month’s Discovering Bourne will provide its customary cornucopia of features, articles and important advice from the team. South Africa sounds like paradise, motoring and cycling words of warning are here and new start-up businesses are highlighted too.

Yes, we can all commemorate Magna Carta (1215), Agincourt (1415) and Waterloo (1815). But spare a thought for Ann Hardy, the “Rippingale Giantess”, who died two hundred years ago this month – over seven feet tall and only reaching the age of sixteen!

Enjoy the words and brace yourselves for the school holidays –Yee Ha!

The Beauty Box is a new beauty salon, which has recently opened on 7 Wherry’s Lane, Bourne. The beauty salon not only specialises in HD brows, but it is also a stock list of HD makeup. This new generation of makeup consists of long-lasting formulas to ensure that you always look your best, which is used by make up artists in the top fashion magazines.

The salon also offers Jessica Geleration nails. This uses innovative technology to provide a ‘soak-off’ gel nail system, which is created to nurture your natural nail. Geleration protects your nails, while offering weak nails the opportunity to grow underneath the gel. It will provide 3-4 weeks of long lasting high gloss shine, with a non-chip finish. This is perfect for a pre-holiday pamper!

As well as LVL lashes and LDN spray tans, the Beauty Box also provides electrolysis treatments. Women and men can receive the treatment. It is ideal for women on hormone replacement therapy, or removing dark hairs. If you continue the treatment, it should eventually stop the hair growth. The friendly beauticians will be able to advise which treatment is right for you; this could involve a course of multiple treatments, or singular treatments for stray hairs.

Inside the Beauty Box

The Beauty Box is now open in Bourne to take appointments. The salon is open Monday: 9:30am – 1pm; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:30am – 6pm; Thursday: 10am – 8pm; Saturday 9:30am – 1pm. Please contact: 01778 218070, or [email protected]. You can find them on Facebook and on Instagram at Beauty_Box15.

Warners Trio to Tackle Thames Trek

Three of Warners’ most determined employees are putting their best feet forward to raise money for the Butterfield Centre, Bourne. These trailblazers are walking “The Thames Path”, a National Trail that runs for 184 miles, from the river’s source near Kemble

in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier, Woolwich, London, and they intend to complete this walk, through impressive countryside and modern day London, in six days, from Thursday August 13th to Tuesday August 18th. The three walkers are Andy, Martin and Mark, who, upon learning about the hard work and level of care provided by the Butterfield Centre for elderly people in Bourne and the surrounding areas, were only too keen to help. Cuts in services can lead to elderly people becoming more isolated, and day care at the Butterfield Centre offers them not only practical help but also friendship and emotional support,

which is why funding for this centre is crucial for Bourne’s elderly population.

Warners is a successful, family-owned company in the heart of Bourne who, over the years, have built very strong links with the community through their commitment to supporting local charities, and in 2015, the three “Thames Walkers” will continue this tradition. The walk will be a highlight for Warners’ fund-raising activities for the Butterfield Centre, which have already included sandwich and cake making, a quiz book competition, a car wash, raffles and the sponsoring of ten employees in the Burghley House Rat Race.

Preparation for the walk has begun, boots and sticks have been bought, and serious training is underway. Andy, Martin and Mark are unwavering in their purpose of raising as much money as possible for The Butterfield Centre, and if you would like to help them or find out more please visit http://www.warners.co.uk/Information/Sponsored_Walk/

Bourne Dance Group Almost Flawless!Dancing stars of “Britain’s Got Talent”, Flawless, had two of its members pay a visit to Bourne recently to teach a two hour workshop to forty-two excited youngsters. Lauren Willis, owner and driving-force behind LDC, invited Swoosh and Oddey to teach separate routines and pass on technical advice to the students. The Bourne Academy venue provided the necessary space and sound system to make the event a roaring success, and everyone was so full of praise for the inspirational visitors whose brilliance was matched by their friendliness and approachability.

Next up is another of Lauren’s coups, the winner of Sky One’s “Got to Dance”, Lukas McFarlane, who will be teaching a contemporary workshop at the Elsea Park Community Centre. This amazing opportunity is on Saturday July 25th and further details are available from [email protected].

01778 421427 or 07837 499061Golf Fundraiser for PhoebeThe staff at Pilot Fish are taking a day out from their busy schedule of helping businesses and property developers raise finance for acquisitions or growth. On September 11th they are hosting an Annual Autumn Charity Golf Day at Greetham Valley.

This year, the supported charity is “The Phoebe Research Fund”. Phoebe Crowson is a five year old girl from Stamford who suffers from a rare genetic skin disease called Epidermolysis Bullosa, which causes the skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. The money raised will be used to help pay for vital research and hopefully, one day, find a cure. More information about the condition can be found at www.phoeberesearch.org.uk.

Vicki Coates, Manager at Pilot Fish, was inspired and humbled after meeting Phoebe and her mum at a recent event, and commented,

“Phoebe is such a sweet girl and my heart went out to her when she explained her condition to us and how it can limit her life. I knew immediately that this was something everyone at Pilot Fish would want the Golf Day to support.” The Golf Day is open to anyone who plays, not just those in business. So, if you want a great day out and help the Phoebe Research

Fund at the same time, just get in contact with Vicki on 01778 309 777 or e-mail [email protected].

“The Rippingale Giantess”Ann Hardy - A Local Tall (Very Tall !) Story.

July 17th, 2015 marks the bicentenary of the death, at a tragically early sixteen years of age, of arguably, Rippingale’s most famous daughter. Born in 1799, Ann Hardy became famous for her height, eventually reaching 7 feet 2 inches (218.6 cm.) tall,

and was known as “The Lincolnshire Giantess” and “The Rippingale Giantess”. During her short lifetime, she was England’s tallest woman. Her parents, Thomas and Sarah Hardy were apparently of “normal” size, her father a mere 5 feet 6 inches tall and her mother, “only of middling stature”, according to The Stamford Mercury’s report of her death on Friday July 21st, 1815.

The same newspaper and the Farmers’ Journal recorded that her coffin measured seven and a half feet long and two feet, seven inches wide at the shoulders. They also reported that she was well known in the area and that her amazing height had attracted considerable attention - she’d been put on show at fairs and galas locally.

Several other very tall people would tour the country, on show in tents, or were installed in hotel rooms where visitors could pay to meet them.

Unfortunately, there is no record of her grave within St Andrew’s Church graveyard in the village, despite her death having been registered in Rippingale.

Theories about what causes what’s called “gigantism” have been explored. One is that the pituitary gland may overproduce hormones which cause the extraordinary growth - and early death.

In comparison, however, Ann Hardy would have been looked down upon by these two characters:

Zeng Jinlian (June 26th,1964 – February 13th,1982) was the tallest female ever recorded in medical history, also the only female counted among the sixteen individuals in medical history who reached a verified eight feet or more. At the time of her death, at the age of seventeen in Hunan, China, she was 8 feet 1.75 inches (248.3 cm) tall.

Robert Wadlow (February 22nd,1918 – July 15th,1940) is the tallest person in medical history, for whom there is irrefutable evidence. He is often known as the “Alton Giant”, because of his hometown of Alton, Illinois, U.S.A. He reached 8 feet 11.1 inches (272 cm) in height!

| Health Wellhead Practice Excellence in head to toe Complementary Healthcare

Osteopathy for Work The health and safety executive estimate that in 2013/14 there were 526,000 cases of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

The health and safety executive estimate that in 2013/14 there were 526,000 cases of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs can include neck and shoulder pain, repetitive strain injuries, low back and sciatica pain, to name just a few. They make up 42% of all work-related illnesses and are the second biggest cause of absence from work.

If you are self-employed, taking time off work with a musculoskeletal problem can have a devastating effect on you and your family’s financial security. Getting back to work as quickly as possible is essential. That can seem impossible when you’re in pain and unable to complete your usual daily activities, but movement really helps.

The Work Foundation recommend that, if you are affected with a MSD, you work with your employer and healthcare professionals to find ways of returning to work as soon as possible. Using a combination of treatment, lifestyle changes and adjusting working conditions as soon as possible is key to recovery. In doing so, you will generally hasten your return to a normal, healthy lifestyle and limit the negative psychological effects that an extended period of sick-leave can have.

How our osteopaths can help;

• Fast access – Osteopaths at the Wellhead practice can usually see you within a couple of days of seeking an appointment. As osteopaths are primary healthcare professionals, there’s no need to be referred by a GP unless you are seeking NHS-funded treatment or your health insurance provider insists.

• Treatment and advice – once we have assessed your condition, we will usually begin treatment straight away. We can also provide advice on how to avoid making the condition worse or re-injuring yourself.

• Inexpensive treatment – Many MSDs can be treated with just a few visits. Treatment costs from £37 per session, which compared to loss of earnings or productivity is a worthwhile investment to help you stay at work or return to work promptly.

• Fit notes – A fit note from your osteopath provides your employer with advice on what they can do to help. This may include adjustments to working conditions, such as reduced hours, a different work-station set-up, or recommending avoiding activities that may prevent or slow down a recovery.

• Onward referral – With your permission, we are able to share information about your health with other healthcare professionals, such as your GP. If your condition requires the intervention of another expert, we can provide a letter of referral detailing the diagnosis and any treatment provided so far.

Types of Sciatica – Here to Help.

If you suffer with sciatica, you will know only too well the effect it can have on your ability to do things that most people take for granted, such as walk, sit and sleep comfortably.

Most cases of acute sciatica will pass without the need for treatment (thank goodness!!). A combination of self-help measures such as over-the-counter painkillers, exercise and hot or cold packs can usually relieve the symptoms. However, should you require advice, then please feel free to contact me on [email protected].

Sciatica is the term used to describe pain, numbness, tingling and weakness caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which is a long nerve running from the lower back down through the buttocks and legs to the ankle and foot. There are a variety of reasons you may experience this problem.

The most common cause is a slipped disc. Less commonly, sciatica may occur as a result of muscle spasm, an injury on the spine. However, there is not always an obvious cause.

People with sciatica often report a pain in the buttocks or legs that feels worse when sitting. They also commonly experience a burning or tingling sensation and weakness in one of their legs. Some people with the condition may

find it difficult to move a leg or foot. Sciatica sufferers also often feel a shooting sensation that makes standing up difficult. Sciatica is usually experienced on one side of the body only and varies widely in intensity. For some, the condition is experienced as an occasional irritation, while for others it has a debilitating effect.

Please contact me and I would be pleased to help you if I can, with some easy ways to make the sciatica more bearable.

Thank you.

Thirty-five years ago, a callow young P.E. teacher joined the staff of Bourne Secondary School (now Bourne Academy) and rose through the ranks to become a most popular and respected Principal, before retiring in 2008.

A fearsome fast-bowler, (until, at forty-nine years of age, a bad back answered many an opposition batsman’s prayer), Geoff Greatwood claimed over one thousand wickets, playing for Bourne Cricket Club. Winter months would see his time spent on the other side of the Abbey Lawn, in football kit for “The Wakes”. No week-end is complete these days without his watching live sport, often Boston United F.C, or the next generation of cricketers on the Abbey Lawn.

A lifelong supporter of Manchester City, Geoff once applied, unsuccessfully, for the vacant manager’s position. Maine Road’s loss, (as Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison steered them to League and Cup success in the late 1960s) turned into Bourne’s gain, as Geoff opted for the rather less frenetic world of South Lincolnshire!

Much of Geoff’s time is now occupied with representation as a Bourne United Charities Trustee, a Bourne Grammar School Governor and a Board Member at Peterborough Prison.

| In the Hot Seat1) Where Were you born, and What is your fondest memory of your childhood?

Frome, a beautiful Somerset market town, near to the park. As a child, both at school and during the holidays, I recall playing mass games of football, fifteen to twenty-a-side, with a tennis ball.

2) Who has had the greatest influence on your life and Why?

Initially, my parents, especially my father who taught me wise values, but unfortunately died when I was twenty-one. Career-wise, it was the late Louis Decamp who, on my appointment at Bourne Secondary Modern School, (now Bourne Academy), was Deputy Head Teacher and later to become Head Teacher. He was a very sensible, level-headed person with exceptional inter-personal skills, who was a perfect role-model for any young teacher.

3) Which tWo characters, (alive or not), Would you most enjoy sharing a meal With and Why?

Martin Luther-King, the Civil-Rights activist, would be one. He played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens, as well as the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The other would be Brian Johnston, who for many people was the unforgettable voice of cricket on both television and radio. As a broadcaster, “Dear old Johnners” was also involved with a variety of shows, as well as commentating on a number of state occasions.

4) hoW Would you describe yourself in just five Words?

Honest, thoughtful, polite, reliable, (with sound) judgement.

5) if there Was one thing Which you could change about bourne, What Would it be and Why?

I would certainly welcome a cinema, but there are many aspects of Bourne which I would hate to see changed. As a past runner, and now walker, Bourne Woods is a real jewel, to be preserved.

6) What advice Would you give to a 16 year old you?

Many of the occupations that will be available to you during your life have not been invented yet! Be confident, but not over-confident, be open-minded and remember, education does not stop at sixteen. You are never too old to learn.

Geoff GreatwoodHead Teacher, Fast Bowler, Man. City Manager (almost!)

The Iron Horse Ranch House has been working hard to locally source the ingredients used in their dishes, so their food has 100% traceability. Since the Market Deeping-based Ranch House is a family business, they have chosen to use as many local family businesses to help them deliver their mission. They will soon be launching a new menu for their fully trained chefs to showcase these fantastic ingredients.

For example, their Ranch House burgers now feature bread from Hambleton Bakery, winners of ITV’s ‘Britain’s Best Bakery: Baker of the Year’. The burgers are delicious, due to the fresh ingredients that are sourced from the finest local suppliers. The 8oz beef burgers and hand cut steaks are sourced from Mick Robinson’s cattle at Toft Farm, Bourne. The meat is handmade into tasty burgers by his daughter Rachel

and son-in-law Duncan at Groovy Foods, Bourne. The Robinsons share the same passion about animal welfare as The Iron Horse; therefore the beef is free-range, grass fed and well looked after. None of the meat is wasted; the brisket is used for their homemade tender pulled brisket.

Other local suppliers include: award-winning free-range chicken from Sutton Hoo, Suffolk; chef’s choice winners M&J Fish, Aylesbury (who have a completely traceable supply chain); Saltby Pig Farm, Saltby; Pearce Brothers Potatoes at Stowgate Farm; and Rowbottom Eggs, Spalding.

The friendly service, fantastic food, and finest ingredients used at the Iron Horse make this a high standard and enjoyable venue.

In 2008 Becky Andrew opened a niche bakery business called Cookie Box. Manufacturing, baking and selling American style soft bake cookies, gooey fudge brownies and lots more besides, Cookie Box has recently moved base from a home kitchen in Elsea Park to a commercial property just around the corner!

Cookie Box has had many ups and downs. Starting out in Rutland as an attractive “Cookie Box” catering trailer, Becky was a regular at events throughout the county until October 2009 when the Cookie Box trailer was stolen and business temporarily suspended!

Not to be discouraged (too much) by the set back, Becky, who had recently had a baby with her partner Adrian, soon began trading again and called upon previous contacts and colleagues to help get Cookie

Box back on the right track, selling at events, fulfilling personal orders and also providing wholesale traybakes and cakes to local businesses. Becky even branched into puddings (read more in next month’s edition!).In 2012 Becky, Adrian and their young daughter brought Cookie Box to Bourne as they moved to Elsea Park and after much consideration about the future of the business decided to expand earlier this year.

Becky makes all Cookie Box products herself using specialist ingredients to make literally whatever you want. Customers can have total flexibility when it comes to flavours, sizes and quantity as everything is handmade to order. Becky will do her best to give you exactly what you’re looking for. The product and price list is purely for inspiration so if you can’t see what you’re looking for or fancy a slightly different twist please ask!

With a dedication to providing high quality products and a really excellent customer experience, Cookie Box is the company to call!

My first ‘duty’, on the previous Friday, was the “onerous task” of opening the Beer Festival. Hundreds of thirsty punters were anxiously awaiting my words to signify that the bar was open. I contemplated an hour’s discourse on the relevance of Keynesian Economic Theory in the Twenty-first Century, but I thought better of it, and just announced it open!

The Bourne Round Table do a wonderful job raising serious amounts of money for local charities, with this year’s target being set at £20,000. Well done and a huge thank-you to everyone involved in making it such a successful week-end.

The people of Bourne have a distinguished history of generosity. The story of HMS Beryl, (so graphically illustrated in the March 2015 issue of “Discovering Bourne” by Rex Needle) typifies this attitude, and that generosity of spirit is not lost seventy years on. There are a number of worthy charities relying on the good people of Bourne to finance good causes, at a time when the Government, at its various levels, is withdrawing funding for vital services. At the end of the month, the Town Carnival will hopefully provide a superb day’s entertainment, whilst once again raising funds critical to the maintenance of a wide range of good causes.

Words from the Mayor

PLEASE SPArE A ThoughT (And SomE monEy!) for ThE mAyor’S ChAriTiES for 2015/16.ALL money raised will be donated to one of three extremely worthy causes:

1) The South Lincolnshire Dementia Society:

The Society offers sufferers and their carers an opportunity to meet together to share experiences, to offer mutual support and to provide regular social and beneficial activities. They also finance and support a Memory Health Care Worker who provides advice and help on all types of dementia for sufferers in Bourne and the surrounding area.

2) The Willoughby School:

The Willoughby School is an all-ages special school in Bourne for pupils with a wide variety of special needs. It is an outstanding example of a school dedicated to giving its disadvantaged youngsters the very best in educational and social development.

3) The Multiple Sclerosis Society:

MS is a neurological condition that affects over 100,000 people in the United Kingdom. It is three times more likely to affect women than men and, while a cure is eagerly anticipated, developments in its treatment are having major success in retarding the physical effects. There is only one specialist centre for the treatment of MS in the county.

What a brilliant introduction to my mayoral year! on Sunday June 7th, we had the Civic Service at Bourne Abbey, an uplifting day with a good attendance, both from local people and visiting dignitaries from all over Lincolnshire.

Events to support the charities will be announced through “discovering Bourne”. PLEASE give your generous support, to give a better life to local people who have very special difficulties.

From the vibrant culture of Cape Town, the scenic splendour of the Garden Route and the incredible wildlife, South Africa has something to offer everyone. This June saw me jetting off to explore South Africa, starting from Cape Town, making my way over to finish at Shamwari, Eastern Cape.

After a very comfortable flight with South Africa Airlines and a fast and efficient transfer via Johannesburg airport, I landed in a very wet, windy but beautiful Cape Town.

I took a lovely journey via the Atlantic Coast road passing by the stunning Camps Bay before arriving at the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, where I enjoyed wonderful delights for lunch at the Market Place. The is an undercover gathering of various local vendors selling the most delicious savouries and desserts.

Unfortunately, the weather was not in my favour whilst in Cape Town and my trip up Table Mountain was cancelled, but then again it’s winter in June there so, whilst it was very disappointing, it was not surprising. My top tip for Cape Town, if you’re only staying a short while, is ‘Try and visit Table Mountain as soon as possible, as the weather is so changeable it may not be possible to go to the top everyday.’

After a walk around the Waterfront, I headed to the Five Star Vineyard Hotel. A stunning property on the outskirts of Cape Town, The Vineyard is situated on beautiful landscaped parkland with Table Mountain as back drop, an idyllic setting and an oasis only twenty minutes from the city centre.

Next morning, I woke to glorious sunshine and headed off on a full day Cape Point Tour. Driving along a very beautiful coastal route, my first port of call was Houts Bay, where I boarded a forty minute Seal Island Cruise enabling me to get a real close up view of hundreds of Cape Fur Seals in their natural habitat.

I then proceeded along the coast to Boulders Beach, home to the Jackass penguin colony. South Africa has lost 90% of their penguin population since the 1930s so they are very much an endangered species. I really enjoyed seeing the penguins.

Just beyond Boulders Beach, I had lunch at the Black Merlin Seafood Restaurant, without doubt the best seafood I have ever tasted. Hake, prawns and lobster, yum, I would highly recommend !

Onwards to Cape Point, driving over the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive with a two hundred metre drop on one side of the coach and a two hundred metre rise on the other. It was the most dramatic drive I have ever experienced, a bit hairy at times, not for the faint hearted!!!!

At Cape Point, I drove through the nature reserve and took the funicular to the lighthouse where I experienced the most panoramic views of the meeting place of the icy Atlantic and warm Indian Oceans, WOW.....

After a hearty breakfast, I left the Vineyard Hotel and Cape Town behind us and drove to the Winelands. I was very lucky to visit Babylonstoren, a Cape Dutch farm with vineyards and orchards surrounded by the dramatic mountains of the Drakenstein Valley.

Guests staying at the farm have full access to the entire farm so they can choose ingredients and pick from the fruit, vegetable and herb garden. A wide range of activities including spa, yoga, cycling, canoeing,

swimming, guided walks and hiking and most important....wine tasting!!!

Arriving early afternoon at the quaint and picturesque university town of Stellenbosch. What a wonderful town, amidst the many wine farms and vineyards! A very historic, leafy town centre with some fabulous restaurants, outdoor cafes, art galleries and boutiques. I took a “Foodies and wine tasting walking tour” and what a fantastic way to find one’s way around this beautiful location and to sample the local produce.

My home for this night was Oude Werf Hotel, which is ideally set amidst the town’s many heritage sites, museums, galleries

and vibrant cafe and boutique culture. I would highly recommend Stellenbosch, a very special town.

The next day took me along the Garden Route. This drive was so enjoyable with spectacular sea and mountain views, after around five hours, I arrived at Knysna. This town is famous for its oyster festival, warm people and the most magnificent views from Leisure Isle to Knysna Heads. The Knysna Heads is the most famed attraction; its treacherous entry into the Knysna Lagoon is where many an ancient vessel met its doom. I set sail on the ‘John Benn’ for a sunset cruise, where some lovely food and refreshments were served. I really enjoyed this little town and would highly recommend a night or two here whilst travelling along the Garden Route.

The following morning, I set off to one of the most famous private game reserves in the world - Shamwari Game Reserve. This was my home for two nights, two days and three game drives, staying at one of the six safari lodges on Shamwari, Riverdene.

I was very impressed with the welcome, friendliness and enthusiasm of all of the staff. My game driver managed to find all of the ‘Big Five’ as well as giraffe, zebras, hippos, monkeys and many more species of wildlife and bird life. Shamwari is home to the Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue and Education Centre. The goal of this foundation is to create an awareness of the horrific way in which wildlife is exploited in captivity around the world. We were very lucky to meet some of the rescued big cats. All Shamwari guests have a complimentary guided tour; believe me, it’s very much worth a visit.

There is also a Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Shamwari. The aim of this centre is to rehabilitate and return all animals back into the wild. It was a very moving experience.

If you have the time, I would highly recommend combining Cape Town, the Winelands, the ‘Garden Route’ and a Safari experience. This is definitely a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip which is great value and will give you precious memories to last a lifetime!

I hope you enjoyed my travel diary on South Africa. I would love to hear from you, if you are considering an “adventure of a lifetime”.

new LincsAlert twitter accountDear readers

Do you use Lincs Alert? Having been a member since its launch in September 2011, I still meet a considerable number of people who have not heard of it so, if you are one of those, please read on as you are missing out!

What is Lincs Alert?

Lincs Alert is a community messaging system run by Lincolnshire Police. Once you are registered, you will receive regular, live updates about crime and anti-social behaviour in your local area. You will also receive crime reduction, and community safety, advice and gain access to crime figures for your area, via the website (www.lincolnshirealert.co.uk). It acts as a two-way communication tool where you are encouraged to report any information that you might have previously thought was too trivial, or not worth reporting to the police. Alerts can be received via e-mail, text or telephone.

The Lincs Alert system also works hand in hand with Neighbourhood Watch, and operates an on-line virtual NHW scheme where you can share ideas with other members in your area.

Lincs Alert joins Twitter

In response to a recent request, Lincs Alert has established a twitter feed. Farmers using the Lincs Alert service suggested that

they would like to receive a quick tweet regarding any issues happening across the region.

The tweets will have a brief content header and a link to the main message containing further details. Tweets are easy to scan, can be received via mobile devices, and it means you can keep abreast of information whilst on the move.

You can join the twitter feed at @lincsalert

The main Lincolnshire news feed can be located via @lincspolice

Not got a twitter account? Join up at www.twitter.com - it takes only a few seconds to join.

1. LawnsIf your lawn is looking tired and run down, give it a boost now with a liquid feed. And where weeds or moss are a problem use a liquid feed, weed and moss killer. Keep mowing regularly when the grass is growing to ensure it looks its best. You can leave small clippings on the lawn as they will help conserve soil moisture. But when a good soak is needed – lawns use around 4 gallons of water per square yard per week – use a lawn sprinkler set on a timer to avoid wasting water and making your water bill shoot up.

2. Pest watchDuring the warm, dry days of summer pests like red spider mite, aphids and whitefly and diseases like mildew can really take hold and get out of control. Check plants regularly – daily if possible – for signs of trouble and deal with it quickly. One or two pests can soon become a major outbreak during warm weather. Ready-to-use sprayers are the quick and easy answer to your problems. Slugs and snails will also become busy after a cooling summer shower, so make sure you have controls ready to hand.

3. WeedsWeeds can soon take over the garden and not only do they look unsightly, but they can smother your prized plants, steal valuable water and nutrients from the soil and become hosts to pests and diseases. Now’s the time for an all-out assault on them using a hoe for annuals and small weeds, mulches and planting membranes to keep beds and borders permanently weed free and weedkillers to stop even the most persistent weeds taking over. Use a weedkiller based on glyphosate for persistent, deep-rooted perennials.

4. Outdoor livingGardens are for enjoying – and the summer is the best time to do it. So make sure you sit back, relax and enjoy your garden this year from the comfort of your own garden furniture. Or entertain friends and family with a slap-up barbecue. And if you plan to stay out late add some easy to install garden lighting.

Well let’s hope all of that hard work earlier on in the year is paying off because you should now be reaping the fruits of your labour.

A daily visit to the allotment or vegetable patch should see you eating fresh veg or fruit most days. The weather, we hope, should be much warmer and you will need to make sure that you keep the plants well watered. Make sure that it is frequent, as sporadic watering can cause a number of problems: flowers may fall, skins split, fruits may not form and plants may bolt. Putting a mulch around the plants can help conserve the moisture, slowing down evaporation rates. The best times to water are at the beginning or end of the day, to minimise evaporation, and make sure that you give the plants a good soaking to penetrate right down to the roots.

A few jobs for this month include; pinching out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, cover cauliflower heads with the leaves to prevent them from going yellow, and feed tomatoes and peppers. When you are ready to lift garlic, onions and shallots, loosen the soil around the roots then choose a dry spell to lift them, lay them on the ground to dry out in the sun: this should help prolong their storage life.

Have you tried growing edible flowers in amongst the vegetables? Not only do they provide colour in cooking but also attract beneficial insects. Examples of flowers to grow are: borage, nasturtium, viola, chives, lavender, marigold-which often confuse pests if inter-planted with vegetables and calendula.

Although it is getting a bit late to sow and plant vegetables, there are a few left, for example leeks can be planted or, if you choose the right variety, you can sow spring cabbage seeds in a temporary seedbed for transplanting later. It is now your last chance to plant out sprouts, winter cabbage and autumn cauliflower and you can continue to sow salad leaves.

Bookkeeping the Easy Way – Leave it to Joanne DolbyJoanne’s Bookwork Services provide a full range of bookkeeping services, tailored to suit specific business needs. Smaller businesses and the self-employed can benefit from owner Joanne Dolby’s assistance, with over fifteen years’ experience in keeping accurate records for both taxation and V.A.T. purposes.

Joanne is flexible and can come to your premises to work with your own software, or work with clients from her office at her home in Dyke. She works with Excel, Sage and Quickbook and does P.A.Y.E, C.I.S. and Self-Assessment.

One of Joanne’s clients, Ray Pawlett, of Ki-Ways, comments, “I have known Joanne for many years now and know her as a person who shows integrity and honesty. I therefore had no hesitation to let her do my bookwork. Now that Joanne does this work for me, I can also add efficiency and patience to her long list of virtues. I have always been pleased with her work, how she delivers it and her eye for detail.”

Good bookkeeping practices benefit your business by helping you manage and control your finances, plan for future growth and ensure that your accounts are completed more efficiently. Outsourcing your

bookkeeping can give you more time to focus on adding value to your business.

Joanne says, “I can go to a client, either on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis, or, alternatively, they are welcome to drop their paperwork round to me – whatever suits the client, suits me!”

Joanne’s client-base is wide, ranging from construction firms and garages, through to shops and beauticians.

For further information on Joanne’s services, contact her on 07951 841333, e-mail at [email protected] or visit her website, www.joannesbookworkservices.co.uk

Finance | Legal | Business | Culture | Bourne

Although, as a group, the Bourne Business Chamber members get to enjoy the networking benefits of sharing ideas and information with other local companies, it also offers much more than that, as our charter demands that we look at helping the Bourne community as a whole, not just the member businesses. In recent times, we have provided our support to a number of local initiatives, including the provision of some funding for this year’s Bourne Summer Carnival, a donation to a local fund set up to offer aid to Ecuador and sponsorship of a recent Holistic Fair in the town. More ‘inwardly facing’, we have invested in an upgrade to our online presence, in an effort to improve business leads for our local member businesses, and we have provided flowers to a few members who were suffering ill health. In addition, we meet ‘socially’ for a meal and

drinks twice a year - two friendly ‘let your hair down’ events, where discussions are more laid-back and less business-focussed. As a group, we also offer support to local and district governments and business initiatives, providing a voice for local feedback and opinion wherever it is required or requested. So, as you can see, we are more than just another ‘business networking club’, who give our time freely to try to improve our local environment. Finally, ending on a very sad note, the Bourne Business Chamber would like to offer their condolences to the family and friends of long-time member, Kevin Hicks, who passed away recently. Kevin was an active member of the group for many years and he will be greatly missed.

The world of sport is used to the concept of a coach and trainer, as someone who motivates, challenges and inspires the athlete to better performance and greater achievements. Even those who excel in a sport, rely on a coach. Andy Murray’s tennis improved under Ivan Lendl’s coaching expertise, finally achieving that Wimbledon win we all celebrated.

Similarly, business owners, leaders and managers can benefit from having a mentor or coach. I work with several who come, looking for help and support, because they are experiencing one or more of the following seven symptoms:

1. You believe that the business will suffer if you are not there all the time; taking a holiday is out of the question

2. You feel you are married to your business and that it demands working all hours

3. Your business does not generate enough profit to justify your efforts

4. You have fallen out of love with your business

5. You have a lot of business experience, however you haven’t invested in yourself in years

6. You have lost sight of where the business is going and why

7. Because you are already good and recognise that it’s going to take that bit extra to become OUTSTANDING

So what makes a good coach and what results can you expect from working with one?

Faye, the Managing Director of Running Imp in Lincoln, who I coach, said this,

“From the first time I heard Paula Finch speaking at a business seminar, I knew I wanted to work with her. By chance, or rather fate, she became our business coach at Running Imp on the Growth Accelerator. Paula has transformed my thought-process and techniques, allowing me to spend more time on high value areas in the business, by giving some control to the Senior Management Team. We now have a clear direction of where we are going and have implanted the tools required to ensure success. If you want impressive high-end business mentoring, I recommend Paula to any serious business looking to get results and have a clear plan of the future ahead.”

Coach yourself to Success

So if you want results for you, your team and your business, with funding options available, call Paula on 01778 424640 today – it could be the one change that makes the biggest difference.

CoMMon InVESTMEnT MISTAKESI am often asked about sensible investing and, quite honestly, investment mistakes are easy to make. I hope these pointers will help you avoid some of the more common pitfalls. • Using an insurance company’s ‘managed’

fund is rarely a good idea, no one company is good at managing money in all asset classes, better to pick specialists in each area.

• Not reviewing investments on a regular basis with an adviser. As a result, what was a balanced portfolio at the time of set-up can quickly become unbalanced.

• Couples can often have assets held in the wrong names and pay unnecessary tax that cannot be reclaimed.

• Insufficient available cash is left in emergency funds.

• Taking excessive risks with specific investments rather than spreading the risk into a diversified portfolio which may well in the long term bring a better return – the easiest way of making money is not to lose it in the first place!.

• Buying investments off the page, or through different parties which takes you away from a cohesive “financial plan” and leaves you with a lot of unconnected purchases and no protection from poorly designed products.

• Investing in the top fund of the month, quarter or the year. In the investment world, it is important to look for a longer, more consistent track record.

• Investing too soon. If you have debts to pay, clear these first.

• Many investors get caught chasing the dream and put all their eggs in one basket, such as Technology, funds or Gold investments.

• Investors are often told to use onshore investment bonds. These are tax-inefficient and pay 20% tax as they grow. An equivalent is an ISA or unit trust could be tax free managed within the annual capital gains allowance.

• People buy when markets are perceived as ‘good’ (high) and sell when they are ‘bad’ (low), this is the reverse of what you should do.

• Holding multiple funds in various places causing administrative havoc and valuation problems.

• Most investors don’t know the underlying risk within their investments until markets collapse.

As always, the moral to this is always talk to an adviser, always make sure that the adviser is fully independent and prepared to offer you an ongoing personal service.

Investing on a transactional basis may be a little cheaper in the short term, but in the long term is likely to mean your investments can quickly become inappropriate and fail to meet with your ongoing needs. A good IFA will be by your side through the bad times... as well as the good ones.

In just six months, since starting up his business in November 2014, ambitious Yorkshireman Chris Pugh has seen his customer-base increase and he is now looking at perhaps taking on another driver already. Such

is the demand for a quality, reliable taxi service in Bourne and the surrounding villages, which Chris is very keen to provide. After many years working for London Transport and, in recent years, as the chatty, amiable burger-van-man behind The Burghley Arms in Bourne, Chris is eager to establish himself on the rank, in this area which he has called home for fourteen years now.

Reliability and a friendly, helpful disposition have already endeared him to many customers. He is licensed with South Kesteven, and he covers an area which includes Bourne, Stamford, the Deepings and all villages between. Besides the regular local calls, Chris operates a very

competitive airports and ferry ports service, and offers a welcome discount for those using him for hospital visits. Chris aims to have a “wheelchair-friendly” taxi available soon, to plug a perceived gap in this particular market.

Legal Advice |

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for property and financial affairs is a document which allows you to appoint someone to make certain financial decisions on your behalf. This includes paying bills, managing bank accounts and selling your property, should there ever be a time when you are physically or mentally unable to do so yourself.

It is impossible to know whether you, your partner or a parent will ever be in a position to need someone to act for you, but the consequences of being in that position and being unprepared are so potentially devastating that preparation is imperative.

The “One Show” recently highlighted a situation in which a forty-two year old man was injured in a jet-ski accident which left him in a coma for three years. He had no Power of Attorney, which meant that his wife had to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as his Deputy. This application can cost thousands of pounds and can take many months.

Perhaps a more common situation is that of a married couple, living in a house that is jointly owned. If one spouse loses capacity, through a stroke or dementia, and moves into a residential home, the other person may not be able to afford

to remain in the house and may wish to sell to buy a smaller property. Not only will it be necessary to make an application for a Deputy for their spouse, but it will also be necessary to make a separate application to the Court to enable the property to be sold. Both applications could have been completely avoided by having a Power of Attorney in place.

An LPA is therefore vital. Think of it as a one-off insurance premium. Once done, it can simply be put away and forgotten, but you can rest assured in the knowledge that you have done all that it is possible to do to protect yourself and your family against any unforeseen future problems.

The vast majority of us* use Google to search online but many do not realise there are ways to tailor your search expressions to improve the results that you need. Here are a few tips that may be of help when searching online. In the information that follows the actual search term typed into Google will be shown in red. (*Latest figures show 88% in the UK use Google to search)

Using the + and – symbols:

By using the + and – symbols in a search we can pin down a search to the content that we want far more accurately. Here’s an example:

A search for Bourne reveals over 42 million hits and a mix of all sorts of references to Bourne including the movies.

So let’s pin this down a bit. Let’s enter the search term using the – operator so enter Bourne –movie

We now get a result that focuses primarily around the town of Bourne and removes any references relating to the movies.

The opposite is true too. If we do the search using the following Bourne +movie, we now have the opposite effect with results focused around the word Bourne and the movie industry.

Using the Quotation “” marks to search

Another neat little feature is to use quotation marks around words. So for example if we type a search for walking football we get a return of 121 million results!

So let’s narrow that down a bit. We are only searching for items relating to the exact phrase “walking football” so let’s tell Google that. Enter “walking football” including the speech marks. Our results drop to 172,000.

We can even combine the two methods that we’ve looked at here to get even better results. Type in “walking football” +Stamford. Google now knows what we want even closer and returns just 28 hits.

These are some of the more generally useful options but you can see a list of others on the Google Support site at https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/2466433?hl=en

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

| Legal Affairs advice by Hegarty Solicitors

Grandparents’ rights

Hegarty Solicitors | 10 Ironmonger Street | Stamford | PE9 1PLTel: 01780 752066 | www.hegarty.co.uk

Figures previously published by Families Need Fathers, the Grandparents Association and the Family Matters Institute indicated that 42% of grandparents lost contact with their grandchildren when the parents had separated.

According to the Justice Minister, in 2013/14 there were 2,517 applications made by grandparents to the Court requesting a Court Order so that they could see a grandchild after the divorce or separation of the child’s parents. This equates to nearly fifty applications each week.

There is a great deal of advice out there for parents who feel that they do not have enough time with their children following separation or divorce, but little for grandparents. Even under the law, grandparents do not have an automatic right to apply to the Court for a Court Order.

However, grandparents may be assured by the fact that, in cases where a grandchild has regularly spent time with a grandparent, then the Court is likely to grant the grandparent permission to make such an application.

However, as with parents making an application to the Court, they must first of all see a Family Mediator.

I would recommend that grandparents in this position seek legal advice from a solicitor specialising in Family Law who will be able to advise them regarding mediation and the court process.

The stark facts above highlight the potentially devastating effect of separation on the wider family, and the importance of anyone going through a divorce or separation choosing legal representation that not only acts in their best interests, but also helps them to consider the interests of the family as a whole, particularly any children involved.

As members of the Family Law organisation, Resolution, the Family Law specialists at Hegarty LLP are signed up to a Code of Practice which means that they will always encourage clients to put children first and bear in mind the impact of their decisions upon the family as a whole.

If you wish to speak to a specialist Family Law solicitor about what options may be best suited to your particular circumstances, please call Chris at the Stamford office on 01780 752066 or email [email protected]

With the costs of childcare rising over the last five years parents are increasingly turning to grandparents to help them look after their children, while they go out to work. This is seen by grandparents as a great opportunity for them to spend more time with their grandchildren. However, unfortunately, if parents separate, grandparents may go from seeing a child frequently, to seeing them occasionally, or in some cases not at all.

| History

Minority non-conformist sects were banned in England by law during the 17th century but their meetings continued in private places including the woods and the fields until 1689 when the legislation had been relaxed and they were allowed to worship as they pleased.

Among them were the Baptists who had established a presence in Bourne as early as 1645 and by 1717 had begun holding prayers and bible study at a house in West Street which they eventually bought with enough adjoining land to build a new meeting place. It was small and constructed of wood, stone and mortar donated by the members themselves.

By 1831, the congregation had increased to 119 with over 200 children attending Sunday School and

so in 1835, a new church was built incorporating an attractive frontage and a low slate roof set behind a modish parapet. Extra galleries were added in 1868, a new organ in 1876 and the original gas lamps were replaced by electric lighting in 1932.

The Baptists were also the first non-conformists to provide a Sunday School in Bourne in 1803 and by 1924, some 5,000 children had attended. The old meeting house was converted for their use but was pulled down in 1891 to make way for a new Sunday School.

There was a major setback in 1897 when fire broke out in a nearby workshop and damage to the church was extensive, especially on the west side where the windows were completely destroyed leaving the building a dismal ruin. The property was insured and refurbished within a few months while an investigation later

revealed that the fire had been started when a lighted match was thrown on some straw by a two-year-old child.

During the Second World War of 1939-45, the schoolroom was used to provide classroom space for dozens of evacuees who had arrived in the town from the Hull area of Yorkshire when the threat of aid raids meant that all windows were blacked out to prevent lights from showing after dark and a blast screen was erected in front of the two main windows.

But the life of the church has continued uninterrupted. There have been further improvements in recent years with a major refurbishment scheme that was undertaken towards the end of 2005 and completed in January the following year, the biggest project of its kind in over a century costing £110,000, a fitting tribute to the endeavours of the Baptist congregation.

Romeo and JulietThe greatest love story the world has ever known, set amid the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. Taking place in Victorian England with the Capulets portrayed as a gypsy family and the Montagues as traditional landowners, the bitter conflict between the families forces Romeo and Juliet to conceal their passion. The forbidden nature of their love leads to the inevitable tragedy. This tale of “a pair of star-crossed lovers” includes wild gypsy dancing and fortune-telling, murderous rivalry and thrilling sword fights.

Henry V2015 is the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt and we will be commemorating this famous victory with this rousing and inspiring play. Prince Hal, the playboy of 15th Century England, turns military commander and statesman to defy the overwhelming odds of France on the bloody fields of Agincourt. Comedy, romance, treachery, triumph and disaster combine to paint a vivid picture of life and death in 15th century France and England.

Tom Jones(Based on the novel by Henry Fielding) Step back in time to the bawdy, fun-loving world of the 1700s with the hilarious romantic comedy of Henry Fielding’s masterpiece Tom Jones.Adapted for the stage by Joan McAlpine, we follow the life of Tom from his discovery as a babe in the bed of an honest, kind-hearted landowner, through his adolescent misdemeanours and on to the growing awareness of his attractiveness to the ladies of all ages. But Tom’s youthful recklessness brings him not only into the arms of a number of amorous women but also to the condemned cell. As he is led to the gallows there is a great commotion - will he hang, or will he escape the noose to marry his only true love Sophia?

Answer the following questions 1) Who are the star-crossed lovers?

2) In Henry V where in France did the battle take place ?3) In Tom Jones who is Tom’s true love ?

| Police Patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings - Cycle Safely - Stay AliveA short while ago I wrote about road safety for pedestrians and promised to write about road safety for other road users. This month I want to write about cyclists.

There have been several high-profile incidents over recent months, mainly in London, as a result of cyclists being killed by other road vehicles which have resulted in large protests. At the end of May, there was a video clip on Twitter of many people ‘lifting’ a double decker bus off an injured unicyclist. These incidents are not unique to London, but occur everywhere. The number of cyclists seriously injured or killed on the roads has increased in recent years, faster than the increase in cyclists out on the roads. The fact of the matter is that cyclists are soft targets, with very little protection.

Cycle safety is a two way process, and involves both the cyclist and other road users. There is a wealth of information to be found on the government’s “Think!” website, and links from that such as “Tales of the Road”.

TIPS on CyCLIng SAfELy:1. BE VISIBLE To oTHER RoAd uSERS. Wear bright

or fluorescent clothing in daylight or poor light, and reflective clothing at night. Always use lights after dark, in the rain, or if the weather is overcast.

2. don’T CyCLE Too CLoSE To THE KERB. Give yourself space on the left. You will miss most of the debris and drain covers and also encourage drivers to think more carefully about when it’s safe to pass you. When overtaking parked cars, watch out for car doors opening suddenly and allow room to pass safely.

3. PRoTECT youRSELf WITH A HELMET. This reduces the risk of head injury if you’re in an accident. Make sure it is properly fitted.

4. MAKE EyE ConTACT WITH dRIVERS. Always be aware of who is around you. Make eye contact with drivers and let them know you’ve seen them.

5. MAKE youR InTEnTIonS CLEAR To oTHER RoAd uSERS. Show drivers what you plan to do in plenty of time and when it’s safe to do so.

6. AVoId CyCLIng WITH HEAdPHonES. While cycling, avoid using devices that could potentially distract you and reduce your awareness of other road users, such as headphones and phones.

CyCLIng ETIquETTE:• Don’t weave in and out of traffic or change

direction suddenly without signalling.

• Use cycle routes, advanced stop lines, cycle boxes and toucan crossings (dual cycle and pedestrian crossings) unless it’s unsafe to do so at the time.

• Give pedestrians priority at all times. Some may be partially sighted or deaf and may not be aware of your presence.

It is against the law for cyclists to:

• Cycle through red lights, including lights at pedestrian crossings.

• Cycle on pavements, unless there’s a sign showing that the pavement has been converted to a cycle path.

• Ride across pedestrian crossings, unless it’s a toucan crossing with a sign saying that cyclists can do so.

I would highly recommend that all children attend a cycling course. You can find the nearest one to you at https://bikeability.org.uk/

Bourne Preservation Societyby Anthony JenningsBourne Preservation Society is all about raising the profile of the wonderful assets of our town, for the benefit of everyone who lives or works here, and visitors to Bourne. People sometimes confuse us with Bourne Civic Society. However, Bourne Preservation Society was galvanised into action as a conservation body in 2008, in reaction to Bourne Town Council’s stated intention to demolish the town’s Cemetery Chapel of Rest. We formed as a membership association, then set up a subsidiary organisation, Bourne Preservation Trust, as a registered charity to operate as a building preservation trust for the chapel. That set us on course for our overall mission, which is to promote Bourne by caring for its historic buildings and environments. Since then we have also been proactive in helping to find solutions for the Old Grammar School, Wake House and, most recently, the Town Hall.

The Chapel of Rest was designed by Edward Browning (1816-1882), son of the architect of the Town Hall, Bryan Browning (1773-1856). Bryan and Edward were based in Stamford. Edward got a lot of ecclesiastical commissions, and designed distinguished parsonages,(including the fine former rectory at Lowick, Northants, where Anthony Trollope and George Eliot are said to have done some of their writing), and the Ostler Memorial in Bourne, once in the Market Place, now hidden in undeserved obscurity in the cemetery. After the 1853 Burial Act, he was chosen in 1854 to design a cemetery chapel for both Anglican and Nonconformist communities, effectively two chapels combined in one. Its early construction date not only makes Bourne’s one of the first of these chapels anywhere in the country, but it seems also to have been the very first designed in its particular L-shaped plan.

Our negotiations with Bourne Town Council and Lincoln Diocese for taking a long lease and converting it into a columbarium were fraught with problems, and we have been forced to abandon that project. But in a very important sense it was a great success - we and all the other public-spirited people who campaigned for the building can claim to have saved it from destruction.

The Old Grammar School is another of Bourne’s good buildings at risk. This is much older, more than two hundred years older in fact, one of only a handful of buildings in Bourne dating from the early 17th century. In my next article I will tell you about our plans for the Old Grammar School and discuss the other buildings I mentioned.

We welcome members and non-members alike at our monthly open meetings on the third Monday of each month. We are indebted to our members for your support, and new members would be most welcome. Have a look at our website at www.bournepreservationsociety.co.uk or call us on 07903 047418.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Summertime… and the Motoring is Easy!A very sunny welcome from me, and how wonderful is it to witness the Bourne Festival, the Bourne Carnival and the opening of the outside pool, to name but a few of our local features? We are clearly in for a superb summer in our town!

All this heat does, of course, bring with it certain hazards that all responsible drivers need to keep in mind. Being a dog-lover myself, I would emphasize the need to take care when transporting our animals around. Personally, I would not leave a dog alone in a vehicle AT ALL on these hot days, not even for a few minutes, as it can clearly put our four-legged-friends in great distress.

Another thing that I routinely do, (owing to the nature of very long days giving driving lessons in my car), is always to have bottles of water in the boot. If you were unfortunate enough to be held in stationary traffic for an extended period of time, you would be very pleased to have thought of this one.

If you have air-conditioning in your car, keep those windows closed, switch the button to prevent warm air outside from coming into the car, and get the air-conditioning working. Yes, it does use more fuel, but it will also help to keep you, the driver, who is the most important person in the car, alert, relaxed and free from drowsiness and fatigue. It also assists in preventing young ones from getting ‘hot and bothered’.

Do wear shades. You will be amazed how tiresome it is to drive while continually squinting due to the bright sunshine. If you can, leave yourself a spare pair specifically in the car for when you are driving – this has nothing to do with vanity, but everything to do with road safety.

Lastly, we do need to be aware of the effects of high temperatures on our cars. Ensure all fluid levels, tyre pressures and tread depths are correct. Consider parking in shaded areas or invest in a windscreen sun blocker. Keep windscreens clean and free from insects – they can affect vision.

Everyone wants to enjoy these lovely summers…. spare a thought for the cyclists and the motorcyclists, and keep an eye out on the roads for our youngsters enjoying these long summer days outside.

Wishing everyone much fun in the summer sun, and stay safe on our roads.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT | Pets and Vets By Alder Veterinary Practice, Bourne

This month we look at dog and cat diets. Alongside the huge increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes in humans, we are seeing the same problem with our pets. In dogs, this has been typically blamed on owners giving too many titbits, especially those containing fat. This situation is less obvious for cats.

There is a line of thought that the types of diet we eat should be related to the food that we were evolved to eat. Humans, dogs and cats took millions of years to evolve, and all the species were finely tuned to the diet that they were able to eat. Animal domestication and farming only occurred about 10,000 years ago, a drop in the ocean in evolutionary terms. Dogs and cats today are still essentially evolved for the diets they were eating 10,000 years ago.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that none of us are supposed to be having such high levels of carbohydrate, sugars or refined polyunsaturated vegetable fat, and that deviations from the evolved diet have directly resulted in the problems of obesity, diabetes and heart conditions that we see today.

We are starting to see changes in some dog and cat diets, with the removal of wheat and other grains, and some reduction in the level of carbohydrates. This is especially important for cats who are obligate carnivores and should not consume much carbohydrate.

People have been feeding raw diets to their dogs for many years but it has only recently been taken up more widely. I have seen great benefits from raw feeding, but the diet must be balanced with meat, bone and offal, with low levels of non-grain carbohydrate for dogs.

Some cats with diabetes will reduce or even stop the need for insulin when fed a raw meat and bone diet. For those interested in feeding in this way, there is a company called Natures Menu that supplies conveniently packaged raw food, and provide good advice on how to feed this. Most good pet stores supply this diet (frozen). The next best diets are those that are grain-free and that have increased levels of protein and fat and reduced carbohydrate levels. There are many of these now on the market. The one that I have had experience of using is a diet called Canagan.

These types of diet will go some way to decreasing some of the health problems that we are seeing today.

Situated in the very friendly village of Morton is a warm-hearted, happy school, a vibrant and fun place to be. With 167 enthusiastic learners, our “family feel” is commented on positively by parents and children, who value the strong relationships that are built between home and school, as we work in partnership to achieve the very best for all children.

We value our smaller size, but this doesn’t mean fewer opportunities for children. In fact, it can mean more! With success in academic areas, sporting competitions, art and music, there is always a positive contribution that the children can make. Pupils leave our school confident, mature and ready to make a successful transition to secondary school.

Our resources are constantly improving and, not content with completing a brand new classroom in 2013, we are in the process of completing a new outdoor play area and Forest School in preparation for the start of the new academic year in 2015. This is an exciting new project for us, but we have always been focused on how children learn best – through hands-on experience.

The school strives to build positive links with organisations within our community. As a Church of England school, our links with our parish church are very important to us. We are a forward-thinking school that combines our Christian values with a desire to ensure that everyone can succeed. Our PTA supports our school, raising additional money to contribute to school projects such as our outdoor play development.

OFSTED commented in their report:

The school is a calm and well-ordered community. Pupils enjoy school. They behave well and feel safe. Lesson activities promote thorough learning and good understanding. Teachers know all about pupils’ individual needs, and give them good advice on how to improve their work . Transitions to our school couldn’t be easier and parents comment very favourably on our programme of visits before children start at school.

To find out more about our school – please do come and visit us.

Multi-tasking Taken to the Extreme! The following headline recently caught my eye (and made me wince at the same time) :

“Chinese man ‘with 17 girlfriends’ arrested for fraud”.

The man from Hunan province, who has been arrested for fraud, made the headlines when all seventeen women discovered each other when they rushed to his hospital bedside.

The allegation of fraud relates to sums of money which he regularly took from the deceived women, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP). The women set up an online chat group called “revenge alliance”, SCMP said, and it was on this chat group that they discovered that he would ask some of his girlfriends for money every month.

The man, identified only as Mr Yuan from the city of Changsha, is reported to have had a child with one of the women and had been planning a wedding with another.

The reality that he had been dating all the women at the same time, some of them for years, came to light when doctors contacted his loved ones after he had an accident last month. “I was really worried when I heard that he was in hospital,” Xiao Li, who had been seeing Mr Yuan for eighteen months, commented, “but when I started seeing more and more beautiful girls show up, I couldn’t cry any more.”

When the story of his multiple girlfriends first came to light, thousands of comments were posted on social media about Mr Yuan’s exploits, some admiring his ability to “multi-task, many others asking for his secret!

these adverts

| Whats in the name?

“Bourne to Dance”, “Bourne 2 Clean”, “Bourne to Paint” – all well-established local businesses who have cleverly punned their way onto the scene with their catchy name. This month’s featured phrase to include some reference to Bourne (or “born”) is “Born Again”

Christians who affirm their renewed and strengthened commitment to their religion are called ‘born again’. To be born again is to be ‘born of the spirit’; the first birth being the physical birth of the flesh.

Its origin can be found, unsurprisingly, in the Bible, where, in John’s Gospel, (Chapter 3, Verse 3), we can read:

“Jesus answered and said ... Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

The term began to be used in the 1960s to give a specific name to those people who renewed their faith. The earliest printed reference to “born again” in this sense is from the U.S.A. where the Reno Evening Gazette, October 1914, mentioned that…

“It [Christian Science] gives man the opportunity of being born again.”

The first that specifically mentions “born again Christians”, again from the U.S.A, is the Decatur Evening Herald (Illinois), where, in December 1928, it made the following reference …

“I knew I had the new desires that a born-again Christian acquires.”

By the 1980s the term was well enough established in the language for it to begin appearing in modified forms in jokes (always a good measure of linguistic acceptance). In 1981, at the start of the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament, and after Bjorn Borg had won five consecutive titles there, The Times published an article assessing his chances with the headline ‘Bjorn Again?’ Since then, an Abba tribute band has also adopted “Bjorn Again” as their name.
