ell it certainly feels a lot more like Spring as I’m writing this month, the weekend has just past and it was the warmest one yet. Here’s hoping it’s the start of what is going to be a lovely hot summer.

Welcome to the May edition of Discovering Bourne. We’ve had some great feedback following last month, so please do keep sending in your thoughts and suggestions. What you think really matters to us, and we can’t improve the publication without our loyal readers. So if you have a suggestion for a story, an event that you would like promoting to Bourne and the surrounding villages, or have any comments or suggestions, please do email us at the usual address [email protected] or by contacting us on the telephone number to the left.

This month we have some really exciting articles by our contributors, including an article on how you can improve your home through clever lighting (see page 22) and advice if your dog won’t stop digging in your garden (page 24), plus our informative articles on health, local sports and motoring. There really is something for everyone.

Please remember to support the local businesses in your area, and keep handy your copy of the magazine for those usual numbers.

ello to everyone, at last warmer days and plenty of flowers showing their faces again. The Easter break is now over for the students and school children who were fortunate to get a fair bit of sunshine. A chance for them to get out into the countryside and enjoy some fresh air. The ‘Walk of Witness’ went very well and many attended on Good Friday to walk through the streets of Bourne.

We are entering into another period for the County Council Elections on Thurs 2nd May. Polling stations will all be open from 7am to 10pm. Unless you have a postal vote. There is much to think about and decide. The most important thing is ‘What do you want for our area?’ We are all fortunate that past generations fought hard for us all to help shape the future by us all being able to place a Vote. Your vote is so very important, its your voice, and it does make a difference. Lenten Lunches were very enjoyable, a meeting place of dear friends and was well attended. The Five session of ‘Glimpses of God’ made a very indepth, bible study opportunity and many people attended these prior to the lunches. This was a very successful ‘all church’ accomplishment and the bonds of friendship strengthened greatly by this joint venture.

Bourne Town Council clerks office has now moved into the Corn Exchange, the newly refurbished Bourne SK Community Centre. The phone number remains the same 426123.

Bourne Town Hall/Commuter Parking - We have now to see what happens to the listed building of the Town Hall. On 7th May there will be the Annual Parish Meeting in Bourne and I would strongly urge everyone that can to come along to the meeting. We are also hoping to have a couple of presentations from two or three of our Schools/Academy’s with their account of Bourne and what they would like to see in place here.

Suggestions and comments about the future of the Town Hall building would be greatly appreciated and also the pressing need for more parking spaces for the town’s shoppers. Could we find somewhere locally for the commuters to park to alleviate the lack of spaces for our shops/business

customers?Your support will be so very valuable here, please try to get to the meeting, I would like to personally invite you all to attend if possible. Thank you.

As you know we believe Lincs County Council now wish to sell this listed asset of the town, which should also be listed on the Register of Assets of Community Value, but that was paid for by the people of Bourne many years ago. There are a few groups who need to use Community buildings and we know how Bourne’s Heritage buildings make our town very special for all our visitors. Any suggestions again would be a great help. We would be able to put in place a ‘Community Right to Bid’ which would give us 6 months to consider the possibilities available for the buildings future, before any possible sale may take place.

Sib had a marvellous birthday celebration in the wonderful Que Appelle Care Home for his 104th birthday on March 26th…… Sib, you are amazing and you so deserve all the Congratulations.

This page will probably be written by the new Mayor next month, so I would like to wish him very well and I know he will thoroughly enjoy his year as I certainly have, and I would like to thank you all for reading this and sending me your comments. Keep well and enjoy the year ahead.

Peterborough Heritage Festival returns for 2013

This summer, make sure you don’t miss out on attending the popular historical extravaganza that is the Peterborough Heritage Festival 2013, the UK’s only multi-period living history festival. Now in its 5th year, the Peterborough Heritage Festival will be a unique chance to experience 2,000 years of history.

Held in the historic heart of the city centre and the stunning surroundings of the Cathedral precincts, the festival will take place on Saturday 22 – Sunday 23 June. There will also be various fringe events happening in the city from Saturday 15 to Sunday 30 June.

This year’s Heritage Festival will feature over 300 costumed re-enactors from some of the country’s top Living History groups, giving you a chance to meet all sorts of colourful characters, from Iron Age warriors to World War II airmen. Cathedral Square will also be hosting a packed programme of live period music, falconry displays and spectacular battle demonstrations.

The theme this year is science and innovation, with a roadshow on St John’s Square in association with the Natural History Museum. Try some hands-on science activities and come face-to-face with life-sized dinosaurs!

The period market will be back on the main Cathedral green, including displays of historic crafts and trades alongside a chance to go shopping for a historically themed gift. Alongside a craft fair on Church Street, there will also be a chance to relax with the family in the Children’s Zone – an activity area for the kids with jesters, storytellers, games and activities.

Keep up to date with all events going on during the Heritage Festival by visiting www.vivacity-peterborough.com.

“Fostering a Future

fter raising a family of their own, Jenny and her husband decided to embark on a life-changing journey to extend their care to other children.

Having worked in childcare for my whole career, it was actually one of the city council’s social workers who suggested George and I consider fostering,” Jenny said.

“With our own children all grown up, we could practically start again and dedicate our time to children who need us; it’s a really rewarding job. Getting through the process took a little while, but then one day we were approved and the next we had three children living with us!

Since 2004, Jenny and George have fostered around 26 children and they aren’t showing

signs of stopping just yet.

Peterborough currently has over 300 children in care. Can you give these children a future by providing them with a safe and happy home while they are unable to live with their own families?

You can foster if you are single, married or in a civil partnership, or have children of your own or not. The only requirement is for you to have a genuine interest in supporting children, a spare bedroom, patience and a sense of humour.

Peterborough City Council values the contribution that foster carers make in caring for the city’s most vulnerable children and in recognition you will receive a high level of support and training, a fee and a weekly allowance for each child that is fostered.

PAIN!! Activity, exercise and workMr J. Sunner. DO.BSc(ost). Registered Osteopath

eturning to normal activities is best done gradually. It is helpful to find a balance between doing too little, and too much at first.

• Resting too much can lead to weak muscles and stiff joints. So try to keep moving otherwise you stiffen up and it takes longer to recover.

• Overdoing it can aggravate the pain, which can lead to you having to rest for even longer.

• Regular physical activity helps us keep fit and healthy, stops soft tissue and joints seizing up, and makes us feel good. Hobbies and interests can help to distract you from the pain.

• If possible people should stay at work, or get back to work as soon as possible, even if they have some pain. People may need to discuss short-term adjustments to hours or duties with their manager. Simple changes can make the job easier.

• So far there is no evidence that heavy work causes long term damage to the back.

Thoughts and feelings: (which then makes recovery even longer).

• Worry and stress can increase the amount of pain felt. Tension can cause muscle spasm and increase pain. Managing stress more effectively can help ease pain.

• Often people worry about long term pain, especially when it carries on. This worry is another stress.

• People may believe that because the pain is

so unpleasant, that there is something seriously wrong, and that the pain is a sign of ongoing damage.

• Fear of increasing pain can make people very cautious about moving their backs. However, reducing normal activities results in the body becoming out of condition, which can lead to further strain and more pain.

Because long term pain can affect so many aspects of a persons life (work, family, social life) it is understandable that people may become depressed. People with long term pain are more likely to feel low. Feeling low can then make the pain worse.

Disabling long term pain is more likely to be linked with these kind of beliefs, thoughts andfeelings, thanwithanymedicalfindings.

Your Health

Medical Herbalism - Could it help you?

What Is a Medical Herbalist?Medical Herbalists are trained professionals who diagnose and treat thousands of patients a year in the UK, using medicines created by using different parts of plants that are then made into tinctures.

Why Can I have Confidence in a Medical Herbalist?Training to become a herbalist is extensive and thorough. I have a bachelor of science degree with honours in medical herbalism that as well as the academic learning, required a minimum of 500 hours of supervised clinical practice prior to qualification. To maintain our registration we need to participate in a programme of on-going training to keep our knowledge base fresh and up to date. In addition to this we also have the usual professional insurances, CRB checks and can liaise with GP’s as needed.

What Happens during a Consultation?Your first consultation with me will take around one hour. This allows me to thoroughly investigate the main disorder using my medical diagnostic skills and asking you some in depth questions. This allows me to assess your overall health so I can prescribe you with an individual treatment. This will include advice on diet and lifestyle to help you take steps towards controlling and managing the disorder yourself. After this, I write out a prescription and prepare your medicines in an easy to use liquid tincture. A follow up appointment will be made to review your progress.

How Long Does Treatment Last? This depends upon the individual and the complexity of their illness. Treatment can be a single appointment or may require ongoing treatment. After the initial consultation I am usually able to offer a more accurate picture.

What Conditions Respond Well to Professional Herbal Treatment? It is impossible to mention all conditions that respond well to herbal medicine but it is worth mentioning that herbal medicine rarely causes side effects, is well tolerated by patients and usually works alongside existing medical drug regimens. Most conditions respond well to treatment, including a range of bowel disorders such as IBS, Crohn’s disease and chronic constipation. Eczema and other skin disorders are helped with anti-inflammatory herbs with anti-histamine properties. Menopausal symptoms respond well to herbal medicine and fatigue syndromes can also be effectively managed. These are just a few of the many conditions that can be improved with herbal medicine.

Why are People Choosing Herbal Medicine?Patients tell me that they like an approach that deals with the whole person, not just a single complaint. They also appreciate building a long-term professional relationship with their herbalist and they want to be treated with medicines that do not have unwanted side-effects.

WHO IS CRAZY?

Your Health

Chiropody

What is a Podiatrist/Chiropodist?

A health professional who diagnoses and treats the huge variety of foot problems in both adults and children. Podiatrist & Chiropodist are the ONLY titles protected under British Law. They are regulated by the Health Care Professions Council. Before having your feet treated, it is wise to check that your Podiatrist is genuine. After all, anyone can advertise and charge for treating your feet but would you let anyone loose on your Teeth, Back, eyes and Health who was not a Dentist, Osteopath, Optometrist or Doctor? You can check the online register at http://www.hpc-uk.org/check/ or telephone them. They are there to make sure you are in safe hands.

Plantar fasciitis - is a painful inflammatory condition on the sole of the foot caused by excessive pulling on the tissue underneath the foot that supports the arch or often as a result of a mechanical problem such as flat feet. The pain is usually felt on the underneath of the heel, and is often most intense with the first steps of the day. It is commonly associated with long periods of weight bearing or sudden changes in weight bearing activity. Obesity, weight gain, jobs that require a lot of walking on hard surfaces, shoes with little or no arch support, and inactivity are also associated with the condition.

Metatarsalgia - is pain in the ball of the foot. It is usually felt in the sole of the foot and sometimes feels like you are “walking on pebbles”. Other people feel a more diffuse

vague pain, ache or burning. Some people have trouble around only one or two toes, others have it throughout one or both feet.

What is a Chilblain? This is often a round, itchy inflammation of the skin, usually occurring on the toes or fingers in cold weather. They are related to an abnormal reaction in blood vessels to cold and can be associated with other conditions such as Raynauds disease and Scleroderma.

Bunion - A bunion is a localized painful swelling at the base of the big toe (the great toe). The joint is enlarged (due to new bone formation) and the toe is often misaligned. The movement of the great toe towards the midline of the foot is technically known as Hallux Abducto Valgus (or HAV)

WHO IS CRAZY?

hen I left my previous job – they told me that I was crazy to leave a stable well paid job in such an economic climate. Perhaps they were right – but I have certainly learned more and helped more people than I would have done in “corporate world”. Here is a selection of the people who have benefitted from the work at Ki-Ways.

Theyoung, fitandhealthy – you certainly do not need to have any problems to get the benefit of the Ki-Ways offering. If you are lucky enough to fall into this category it is a good idea to do something to stay in it! Your health is the best investment that you could possibly make.Seniors – Special classes are held for seniors. Reported benefits vary from arthritis relief, better balance, improved breathing, less stress and a better outlook on life.Dementia sufferers – working with Dementia Support South Lincolnshire, we have tailored a special session that helps both the dementia sufferers and the carers with a mixture of Tai Chi movement, self-treatment and meditation. Participants enjoy the sessions and feel healthier on a physical and mental level after joining in.

Parkinson’s sufferers – Tai Chi exercises to help the control and balance coupled with treatment have become a fun and productive way of managing the condition. It is highly satisfying when a client forgets the walking stick that they needed to get themselves into my room!Learning Support – the pleasure gained when a client with a learning disability suddenly understands the exercises and joins in is amazing! I run a weekly session for people with learning difficulties.Chronic Fatigue – problems like chronic fatigue, M.E. and fibromyalgia can blight a life. Integrating the Ki-Ways work into the lifestyle of sufferers has made massive improvements to sufferers.

These examples are in no way exhaustive but they are real. Ki-Ways has helped thousands of people, perhaps YOU could benefit? Although I would not call myself a Buddhist, some of the ideas make a lot of sense to me. One of the tenets of Buddhism is to “reduce suffering” in the world. If that is a crazy thing to want to do – then I am crazy! If you would like some help or would like to learn my ideas to help others, please contact Ki-Ways.

In the spring time of 2011, I decided to give up the corporate world of spread sheets and meetings and set up my own

business doing what I had always wanted to do and called it Ki-Ways. Since that time, I have spent my time giving Shiatsu

treatments and teaching Tai Chi, meditation, energy sensitivity, energy cultivation and many other aspects of healing and self-

development.

UnderstandingInheritance Tax

hen you die – your estate may be taxable at 40%, many estates are not taxed or are subject to a lower rate by using a variety of allowances and planning strategies. As ever the rules and regulations are complicated, so it is important to take specialist advice at an early stage.

The first step is to ensure that you have a valid and effective Will in place because this alone can be a very cost effective way of preserving the value of your estate and ensuring the benefits go to those that you choose.

I have seen examples where the beneficiary with the greatest interest has been the tax man (HMRC) – taking a larger share than any of the individual children! I have yet to meet a client that would choose this situation, and yet, with a little planning there are several alternative solutions.

The use of Trusts can be an effective way – but you need someone that understands how they

• Screenwash – With all the extra bugs about, it’s important to keep screenwash topped up to re-move them from your windscreen. Don’t use plain water, it doesn’t work.• Tyres – With all the long journeys for summer holidays there will be extra wear and tear on the tyres. Check the tread depth and pressures before setting off, including the spare. Also be aware of ‘age related cracking’ and any bulges in the tyre wall which could cause a blow out. As tyres get older they start to go hard, perish and crack around he edges. They may have plenty of tread left, but perished tyres are just as dangerous as bald ones. • Air Conditioning/Climate Control – On cars that have climate control, you set the tem-perature to what you want and the system turns the A/C on or off, high or low to keep the car at the temperature you set. Standard A/C is turned on or off manually by you. It’s important to run your A/C regularly during summer and winter to keep it in working condition. It contains a type of oil that parts of the A/C system need for lubrication, and not using it often can cause a breakdown. • Pollen Filters - For those that suffer with hay-

fever, having regularly changed pollen filters can help alleviate the symptoms. If it is not replaced at regular intervals then you could end up with mild symptoms. They also block out any nasty bacteria that may be lurking around the system. • Coolant – Make sure to check coolant levels as the hot weather can make cars overheat. Carry a bottle of water just in case, but remember; DO NOT open the radiator cap if the engine is hot and do it slowly! The pressure could cause the cap to burst off and the water would cause serious burns!• Children and pets – Don’t leave children or pets in cars as temperatures can get very high.• Windows – Remember to shut windows when you park up at your destination, don’t give thieves an opportunity.• Sun Visors – As mentioned earlier, the inside of a car gets very hot, especially if not parked in the shade. This includes steering wheels and gear knobs. Investing in a sun visor will keep it cooler.• Things To Keep In The Car – Water for yourself, children or pets, a cool bag to keep drinks in, wet wipes, sun cream, glasses and a hat.

LIGHTING YOUR HOMELight is an artistic medium; you can create the illusion of depth, visually change the dimensions of a room and produce drama. Lighting has three main functions:- AMBIENT light is the light that surrounds us and stops us tripping over the rug, ACCENT light is the light that draws our attention to something beautiful and TASK light helps us see the detail so we can work. To meet these needs use a combination of light sources to provide ‘light layering’, which allows flexibility for different moods.

By Yasmin Chopin, Interior Designer

Yasmin works in the East Midlands and East of England. She also runs courses and workshops and speaks to groups. See her website for details www.yasminchopin.com

• Do you have a desk or table lamp that’s looking a bit tired? Remove it from view, place it behind something beautiful, perhaps even on the floor, to provide backlighting. It could throw some interesting shadows and light up a dingy corner in an exciting way. Don’t throw out your old lamps until you have experimented with them.

• A free standing lamp can cost quite a sum. I suggest you go for the best quality you can afford and buy something you really love. You will be able to take it with you if you move, whereas fittings, such as spots and pendants, are more difficult to transfer. Make sure you see the lamp both ‘on’ and ‘off’ before buying.

• If you are renovating your space and need a new lighting plan be quite clear and put it down on paper. This will help explain your ideas to your electrician. Think about, and ensure you include, the three different functions as explained above and consider where the on/off switches and sockets need to be situated for convenience and safety.

Here are three key lighting tips:

Pet’s CornerBy Tracey Longmuir of Isis Pet Care

Does your dog dig in the garden?Pet’s Corner

Problem:“Hello, I have a 4yr old mixed breed rescue dog that I have had for 3 years and he has recently started to dig up my garden, and I have no idea why. Can you please give me some ideas as to why

this may have started after all this time as he didn’t do it before and what I can do to stop it?”

Answer:There are a few reasons why a dog would start to dig in the garden, the best place to start is to ask yourself, has anything changed in his and your routines, living arrangements or work or home life? If you can answer yes to one or all of these questions you can be sure there could lay the reason. There are many reasons a dog will begin to dig and the most common are lack of exercise, boredom and separation anxiety.

• Lack of exercise – this is a good way for them to burn off energy • Boredom – this will give them a sense of purpose and will be self-rewarding and will make time pass quicker• Separation anxiety – If he is seriously pining for you he is digging to get to you and is an unpleasant psychological issue relatively common among dogs, however as it’s so specific to each dog and owner, you would need to contact a specialist dog behaviourist to help assess the situation and recommend the next course of action.

On the other hand, your dog may simply want to escape and see what is around the other side of the fence and no matter how much exercise and attention they get, it's nearly impossible to confine them and what I would suggest is that you don’t follow the discovery of a ruined flowerbed with a punishment as this is widely known as the least effective form of response as they won’t have a clue what the fuss is about, instead count to ten and then maybe consider making the spot they dig in a ‘flower free’ zone and allow it to become a ‘dog dig’ zone as long as it’s totally secure and they can’t escape!

Add A Start Button to Windows 8? The most common compliant that I hear from people running Windows 8 is the lack of the traditional start button on the desktop. However, there are solutions available to rectify this. WINDOWS X QUICKLINK MENUWhat isn’t immediately obvious is that some of the functionality of the old Start Button is available using a key combination on the Windows 8 Metro START screen. To access this press the keyboard Windows key and the X key together

The full list of commands are shown in the image to the left and you will recognise many from the old Windows Start button, especially those in the lower section.

The upper section is system administration tools. Some of these tools are very powerful, so don’t ‘play’ with them unless you are sure what you are doing.

You can access the Control Panel from here as well as tools for managing the various aspects of your computer.

The traditional Run and Search are also offered.

THIRD-PARTY START BUTTONSIn addition to the Windows X option there are a number of third-party (i.e.; non-Microsoft) apps that can be installed and which will add a Start button to the Windows 8 desktop, returning the familiar functionality that was removed by Microsoft in Windows 8. These apps vary in cost, complexity and quality but a FREE one that I can recommend is Pokki.

Pokki will modify your Windows 8 taskbar and will add a new Start button (shown on the left).Once added Pokki provides the following…

•ListofFavourites •ListofAllApps •LinkstoControlPanel •LinkstoCommonuserareas •Afamiliarlogoff/shutdown/restartmenu •AnicontoreturntotheWindows8MetroStartScreen

Why Microsoft chose to remove the Start button from Windows 8 is a mystery.I applaud their efforts in producing the Windows 8 Metro interface as it does offer a ‘new’ method of interfacing with your devices but they have got things very wrong by shoving this out without having a familiar Windows 7 style desktop behind it. The vast majority of my clients, especially those in their later years, are struggling with Windows 8 and would benefit from a higher degree of familiarity. Seems a little like change for change’s sake with no true benefit for users unless they are on a touch screen device.

ourne is blessed with several green spaces for relaxation and sport but the Abbey Lawn has been in public use for longer than any other.

It once formed part of the grounds of the Abbey Church although the public were allowed to use it at the discretion of the vicar. There is no record of access ever being restricted and so it became the town’s unofficial recreation ground and has been in use for at least 200 years.

The land was eventually acquired by a syndicate of local businessmen who rented out the rights for cricket and football but when it came under threat from housing development in 1931, Bourne United Charities decided to buy it for the benefit of the town with the intention of preserving it in perpetuity as an open space and sports ground.

Football and cricket have been played here since the 19th century but other sports have since joined them including tennis, bowls and even the French game petanque, while nearby is the Outdoor Swimming Pool, one of the few remaining lidos in England.

There was once a putting green here (circa 1965), now closed but a great attraction in the summer months. Quoits was also popular and

competition was keen whenever visiting clubs arrived from surrounding towns while hockey was played here from 1921 until recent years. The Abbey Lawn has had many other uses with maypole dancing by schoolchildren on May Day during Victorian and Edwardian times while the annual Whit Monday sports which continued for over 30 years attracted the top athletes from around the country.

When flax was grown in the area to help the national effort during and after the Great War, itinerant workers who were brought in each year to help with the harvest, camped under canvas on the Abbey Lawn and in the summer of 1918, a tented town sprang up catering for 500 people assisted by troops from various regiments.

Church feasts and treats were celebrated here and gatherings for other national and royal occasions such as Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee in 1887 together with patriotic meetings and military parades during two world wars. Over the years therefore, the Abbey Lawn has been a focal point for the people and synonymous not only with sport but also the community spirit here in Bourne.

ementia is a disease of the brain some of the symptoms include loss of memory, mood changes, and problems with communication and reasoning. There are many types of dementia and dementia can affect everyone differently. If you are worried that you, or someone close to you, may have dementia, then the Alzheimer’s Society say it’s important to talk about it.

Talk to your family and friends. Talk to your GP. Talk to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Should I talk to my Solicitor? Yes. They are able to advise you and your family on Legal and Practical issues that can help make dealing with your Personal, Legal and Financial affairs easier.

One of the most important things you should think about is a Lasting Power of Attorney. This enables you to appoint who you want to deal with your finances and affairs or your health and welfare when you become unable to do so.

If you do not have a Power of Attorney and you become mentally incapable of managing your affairs, then an application will need to be made to the Court of Protection who will appoint a Deputy on your behalf, this procedure is quite costly and can take up to 6 months to put in place.

You should ensure that your Will is up to

date, and maybe discuss with your solicitor any possible ways of protecting your families inheritance from care home fees.

What about end of life care? Not everyone wants to think about their end of life care but if you have strong feelings about it, a Living Will allows you to advise the medical profession and your family of your preferences regarding your end of life care and the refusal of certain medical treatment.

Dementia can turn your world upside down but by sorting out your legal and financial affairs and putting them in order whilst you are able to ensures that in the future they will be dealt with in the way that you want.

It’s time to talk about dementia.
