Easter has come and almost gone, and this month we’ve included a treasure hunt

activity which will hopefully keep your enthusiastic little, and not-so-little, ones busy in those days before school re-starts in early April. To me, the build-up to Easter always seems a bit like a speeding train – you’ve only been on it a little while since leaving the station in the New Year; things have rushed past the window, (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and the like); you’ve just about got used to the

wind and rain; and guess what - here’s your stop! Everything has flown by and you’ve been caught unawares. However, we are now in a much better place than at the start of the trip – evenings are now pulling out, there’s sunshine on the flowers in the garden, barbeques, time to think about those holidays ahead ….

I hope you enjoy this “better place” as much as I’m planning on doing. The contents of this, your “favourite freebie”, are designed to help you ease your way through this gorgeous springtime.

Welcome to our April edition...

John

In a year, already to be remembered for the sad loss of far too many of the great and the good,

this month we feature our greatest writer, whose death occurred exactly four hundred years ago, on St. George’s Day, April 23rd, 1616. William Shakespeare “lives on” in many ways, from his plays, which continue to entertain on stages around the world, to his many phrases which have since entered into our everyday language. This month’s quiz is just “As you Like it” and, hopefully, not too “Much ado about Nothing”.

We at “Discovering Bourne” are always looking out for new ideas for features and interesting stories and anecdotes from our many readers. The balance provided between pure advertising and general items of information and news stories, is one which we enjoy striving to maintain. Please get in touch if you know of a new area of interest which we could possibly explore.

Finally, following my recent neck injury, I can report that my recent visit to the chiropractor, on April 1st, was fairly successful, and now there’s no looking back!

Year!

It’s difficult to imagine, but it’s true – twelve months have indeed passed since this headline announced the arrival of Jason Skinner’s ambitious foray into the “shabby chic” market. In that time, his shop and adjoining workshop, just off Abbey Road, behind the Corn Exchange in Bourne, have been filled and then re-stocked on a regular basis, as word of his wares, along with his ability to transform “tired” furniture, has spread around the district.

Old tables, chairs and stools, alongside candle stands, picture frames and boxes are all there, ready to bring an antique look into your home, some tinged with delicate French adornments. In his workshop, many pieces which customers have commissioned, have become transformed by a mixture of rubbing down, stressing and re-painting in a particular way – the final product …magnifique!

Jason has been staggered by the public’s response to his “Dotty Hen Vintage” concept, particularly with his commissioned work. He is most grateful for the support offered by so many regulars and local helpful firms, such as Stringers, Sew Friendly and Harrison and Dunn.

Dotty Hen Vintage -“Shabby Chic” hits Bourne! – One Year On

An all-day birthday party has been planned for Saturday April 9th, to which you are all invited. A free prize draw will include “Earthborn” paint starter packs, a “Sophie Allport” hamper and a Dotty Hen selection

box.

A local, family-run business, Topcatt Fencing Ltd, could easily pass the “Ronseal test”, by doing “just what it says on the tin”. They do a “Top” job and the name is “Catt”, husband and wife, Darren and Donna to be precise. How appropriate, too, that a specialist fencing supply and installation firm should be linked with one of the market leaders in fencing protection!

Just a brief visit to their website, www.topcattfencing.co.uk and the glowing recommendations from many satisfied customers, bear testimony to the fact that this is indeed a quality outfit, with an excellent reputation, for both residential and commercial customers, throughout South Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire.

Based in Deeping St. James and serving a wide local area, Topcatt Fencing specialise in the supply and installation of all types of fencing materials, including residential, agricultural, sports, security and boundary fencing … and much more. Think gates, decking, fencing, pergolas and garden makeovers, and you’ll find Topcatt are there, with a wide range of standard wooden or metal gates to suit your every taste. They design and install top quality decking, and just imagine how a pergola could just put the finishing touch to that garden makeover you might be considering, now that summer’s just around the corner. Whether it be a small repair right through to sprucing up the garden they have it all covered. Besides installations, they can offer a delivery service, as well as collection on all wooden fencing and decking products.

Over many years, Topcatt Fencing have not only installed many high quality additions to residential properties, but have also worked for local communities, schools and council authorities. Great pride is taken in all installations, they are committed to the very best in customer service and a high standard of workmanship and fully insured.

In their words: “We have a passion for fencing and strive for the very best to please all of our customers and meet their individual needs”.

In the words of others: “I would definitely recommend Darren to anyone who needs work doing. Very impressed!” Chris Rouse.

“I am very pleased with my new fencing; delivered on time and put up with minimum of disruption. The workmen were friendly, efficient and tidy, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a quality service”, Sharon Harding.

“Very impressed with Darren’s standard of work, precision and time schedule”, Mr & Mrs Roe.

Walking the Macmillan Way is Yvonne’s next ChallengeTwo hundred and ninety miles in three weeks is the tall order facing Bourne ladies, Yvonne Roberts and Lilian Vaughan, along with their friends, Christine Caston from Rippingale and her sister, Marie Caston from Deeping. On Easter Monday, March 28th, this intrepid quartet will strike off from the top of Boston Stump and follow the Macmillan Way across the

heart of the English Midlands, arriving on the south coast, at Abbotsbury in Dorset on April 14th. Yvonne’s husband, Taff, will be doing the difficult bit, ensuring that he drives the support caravan to the right spot each day, to rendezvous with them and provide crucial moral support! The aim is to raise a stash of cash for the fantastic Macmillan Nurses. Please contact Yvonne on 393219, if you can help her on her way.

“Wellbeing Week” at RenuFebruary saw the very successful launch of “Wellbeing Week”, a new initiative from Renu. The purpose was to introduce both existing and new clients to a wide variety of topics that can affect their wellbeing, including subjects such as looking after their feet, their pelvic floor, beating belly fat, managing stress levels, discovering aromatherapy etc.

Many of the sessions were so popular that they were run twice to accommodate the numbers, and were very well received by the audience.

Claire Saunders, owner of Renu, was delighted by the turn-out for the first “Wellbeing Week” and said, “I would like to thank all the ladies who attended, and who have requested further information on the topics that we covered. We were delighted by the level of interest, and will look to continue these informal talks throughout the year. I would also like to thank all the presenters for giving up their time in helping Renu launch this brand new programme.”

Early on this year, Renu nominated Breast Cancer Awareness as their charity for 2016, and raised in excess of £120 in donations from these talks.

If you would like further information on Renu, or any of its new promotions for 2016, please follow us on Facebook and visit our website, www.renu.uk.com.

Mother’s Day Bouquet for ShirleyA smiling Shirley Sandall, from Waterside Close in Bourne, is seen receiving her beautiful bouquet from Stephanie Romaine, having won our March Mother’s Day Competition, sponsored by “Stephanies”. Shirley correctly identified the gerbera as photograph “B”. Meanwhile granddaughters, Elanor and Lexi, grit their teeth and hope next year, grandma can win a big box of chocolates instead!

BoURnE SCRABBLE CLUB – Silver (9) Jubilee (16) Time (6)!Twenty-five years ago, last month, a humiliating defeat on the scrabble board led to five ladies from the local W.I. deciding to try and make amends, and from that low point, there emerged the Bourne Scrabble Club. Advice from Spalding Scrabble Club was sought, a meeting place was secured, a recruitment advertising campaign adopted, and there followed several successful years, with both ladies and men meeting regularly and entering many tournaments.

In recent years, unfortunately, several obstacles began to appear, including health and age concerns, increased cost of room hire and members moving away. However, the decline in numbers has been halted now, once the decision was taken to change from an evening-only activity to one which now occupies three hours on a Monday afternoon.

It is certainly a very friendly and very sociable club, with an emphasis placed on the “tea and biscuits” element and a good

laugh and a chat, alongside the brain-searching required to secure those top scores! Anybody getting a bonus word can expect a chocolate bar reward! There is currently a membership of almost twenty, and new members are always made welcome.

Why not give it a go, and keep those brain cells active?

Call in at Wake House, North Street, on a Monday between 2pm and 5pm, or contact Betty on 01778 425234 or Angela on 01778 426617 for more details.

north Stars Shine Brightly Again!Bourne family firm, north Shoes, are celebrating, after scooping their fourth national accolade. The North Street shoe store was named “Men’s Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year” in the prestigious 2016 Footwear Industry Awards – maintaining a remarkable run of success since the awards were launched in 2012.

In that time, they have now twice been named “Men’s Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year”, as well as winning the “Independent Family Retailer of the Year” and “Ladies Independent Retailer of the Year” crowns.

This year was a record-breaker for the awards, with more entries and nominations made and more votes cast than ever before. Event director, Paul Ryder, said: “These awards are designed to shine a spotlight on the UK’s most outstanding retailers for ensuring that the end-user, the consumer, gets the service, quality, style and functionality they expect - congratulations to North Shoes for joining the ranks as a Footwear Industry Awards 2016 winner.”

Managing director, James North, the fifth generation at the head of the family shoe firm, collected the trophy during a glittering ceremony at the National

Conference Centre in Solihull.

He said: “It’s fantastic to get public and industry recognition for our traditional fitting service and quality brands, and it means so much that the hard work of everyone at our four stores has been acknowledged at such a prestigious level.”

North Shoes, who were also shortlisted in three other categories at the 2016 awards, still trade from the same Bourne building where they were launched in 1876. They also have stores in Stamford, Peterborough and Cambridge.

The awards presentation ceremony, hosted by Capital FM Radio drive-time host Greg Burns, was attended by more than two hundred people.

James North (centre) proudly displays the “Men’s Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year” award, alongside Greg Burns (left) and Michael Donaghy, past president of the Independent Footwear Retailers Association.

Battams to Battle for B.H.F. It is a daunting prospect for any runner to tackle a marathon. How much more of a challenge then must it be for someone who admits to never having run in a race, for more than a minute, in her life? Twenty-two year old, Kerry Battams from Bourne, is that “someone”, as she runs the London Marathon on April 24th. Two years ago, Kerry’s father suffered a heart attack, and it is thanks to the fantastic support of the British Heart Foundation, that Kerry’s family were able to see her dad through his recovery.

Now, eager to show her gratitude, Kerry has embarked on a gruelling programme, which will hopefully culminate in her raising £2,000 in sponsorship for the British Heart Foundation. Early March, and Kerry has already progressed from the N.H.S. “Couch to 5km.” app. to an actual half marathon. “With persistence and hard work, anything is possible”, Kerry assures us, and who are we doubt this determined young lady?

Kerry deserves our every effort to make this target attainable. The B.H.F. relies on heroes such as her, so please link to her “just giving” page https://www.justgiving.com/KerryBattams; alternatively you can text KBATT93 to 70070 to donate £5.

It is tempting to get plants off to an early start but, outdoors, it is still risky so why not sew a few advanced seeds indoors then harden them off next month and plant them in early June? Seeds that

can be planted out include; leeks, most root crops (but cover beetroot if the soil is cold and wet), broccoli, cabbages and other brassicas, peas and broad beans. If you haven’t planted your onions yet, make it one of the first jobs of the month and continue planting seed potatoes, but make sure you earth-up the emerging shoots of your earlies to protect them from frosts. Other crops you can plant out are; artichokes (propagate by cutting off new side-shoots or suckers with a short length of root from the base of the plant –re-plant and water well), herbs (most can be planted out now, but those with tender leaves will need covering at night), peas and broad bean seedlings, which can be hardened off and then planted out. Asparagus beds should be prepared and planted this month (see last month’s advice on preparation); after that it will be too late.

I recently read about an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn by pre-chitting: - lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box; an old ice-cream carton will do. Check daily, and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost and keep warm indoors or in the greenhouse. When the shoots reach about an inch high, plant out under a cloche, without disturbing the roots, and feed them with nitrogen-rich feed.

There are always jobs that can be done around the allotment or kitchen garden and a couple for this month are: build cane supports for climbing beans and put up pea sticks. Regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings and young plants, as the weeds will take up all of the nutrients that the vegetables require for healthy growth. Hoeing is a really good way of keeping the weeds at bay; even if there are no visible weeds, a quick hoe will keep on top of them.

Days are lengthening and hopefully the weather, and the soil, will be warming up, but don’t forget that we can still have some hard night frosts, so keep an eye on the weather forecast and have some insulation materials handy.

Stamford Handmade Limited are a “not-for-profit” creative group of local artists, crafters and lovers of all things handmade. Supported by a membership of dedicated and hard-working crafters, the group has been in existence for more than six years. Starting out as the Stamford Artisans guild, the group has grown and evolved over time, and to reflect this evolution, the membership decided to have a change of name starting in 2015. To help support the members, the group have reduced their membership fees by 50% this year, and have also reduced their stall fees. Craftspeople often put in hundreds of hours of work for which they will never get paid, so this is one way of giving them a helping hand.

Supported by a hard working committee, Stamford Handmade organise regular art and craft events in the local area, at Stamford Arts Centre, Victoria Hall oundle, oakham Castle and the Discovery Den at Ferry Meadows, peterborough.

Members believe that the passion and care that goes into a hand-crafted item cannot be beaten. on offer are diverse items such as pastel artwork, hand knitted and crocheted children’s wear, aromatherapy candles, cards and gifts, a variety of jewellery, landscape and wildlife photography, soft toys, teddy bears,

House-Hunting Season is Here – Advice from the Experts

Buyers often don’t realise that, on top of the cost of the house itself, there are many other, one-off expenses involved which can soon add up. These can include mortgage application fees, survey fees, Stamp Duty, search fees, land registry fees, legal costs, removal costs and, if you are selling as well as buying, estate agent’s fees.

If you are having a mortgage, your lender will carry out a basic valuation; this will only ensure that the amount they are lending you is protected. It is strongly advised that you also have an independent, more detailed survey carried out. The level of survey you need depends a lot on the individual property you are buying.

Searches are an important part of the process. There are a wide range of searches that can

be carried out, and they provide you with more information about the property you plan to purchase, for example whether the road serving the property is a publicly-adopted highway, if there are any mineshafts in the immediate vicinity, whether the property is subject to any planning enforcement notices, and any environmental issues which could adversely affect the property.

The process from having your offer accepted to completion usually takes about twelve weeks. However, this does depend on the chain. If the property you are purchasing is in a chain, your own purchase will be affected if someone a few links down the chain has problems with their mortgage company, their searches reveal matters that require further investigation, or they lose their buyer.

| Legal Corner advice from Double and Megson

For many people, the start of spring means the beginning of the house-hunting season. Moving home is an exciting time but, because it is not an everyday event, it can be frightening and can cause stress and worry.

Watch Out for the “Seven Deadly ISA Sins”As the current tax year enters its final weeks, make sure you are aware of some common ISA mistakes.

If you had to sum up markets in 2016 in one word, it would be ‘volatile.’ We have enjoyed a generally rising market for a number of years now and as these markets mature, volatility does tend to increase. Corrections over the course of a rising market are normal, but they often create a floor for the next market surge - so you should not get spooked out of the market on bad days.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket - instead, diversify your savings across a range of assets - and also don’t get drawn into short-term thinking.

It is important to be clear about your investment goals and how long you have to reach them. Volatile markets today should not worry you too much if you

have allowed enough time to reach your goals and have the right investment strategy. Remember, an investment loss isn’t a loss until you cash it in.

Neither should you just rely on past performance; whilst this can be a good indicator over the long term, the fact is any manager with returns well above his peers is doing something different and therefore potentially riskier. An investment maxim suggests that, if a fund has above average annual returns for five years, it will be in the top 10% when cumulative returns are calculated.

You should “look under the bonnet” of your chosen fund; find out what the manager’s thoughts are on different assets and markets and how they fit in with any of your other investments… don’t just rely on the numbers.

With interest rates languishing at rock-bottom levels for seven years and counting, you need

your savings to work even harder to generate a decent return.

According to fund manager Fidelity, a £15,000 lump sum invested in the FTSE 250 index over the ten years to January 31st 2016 would have grown to £35,455.49. The same £15,000 deposited in the average UK savings account over the same period would have grown to £16,076.25 - a difference of almost £20,000. And that’s without taking inflation into account.

Finally, remember that “Time in the Market matters more than Timing the Market”.

Words from the MayorIt’s been a month in which the incredible generosity of many people in Bourne was evident. We were invited to an evening with the Bourne Scouts, who presented cheques to half a dozen or more very worthy charities. Not only did they receive benefit from the fund-raising activities of the Scouts, they each outlined the superb contribution to society they voluntarily make and evidenced the large number of people in our town, whose nature is to seek to help those who are less fortunate. The Scouts and their associated groups are a wonderful example of organisations that combine character-building, skill development, fun and camaraderie with respect for, and service to, the wider community in which they operate.

Sorry to return once again to my perennial theme of the Mayoral Charities, but my last

few fund-raising efforts are rapidly approaching. We have two more “Pub Challenge” evenings to be held

at the Anchor and at Smiths, in April and May respectively (Dates to be confirmed). I hope that both events will attract a number of spectators, to see the final games and the declaration of the ultimate champions.

There will be three events at the Church Hall in the next three months. On April 9th, from 2.00pm until 5.00pm, we will be hosting a

Beetle Drive, tickets are £1.50 and include light refreshments. It is not necessary to purchase tickets in advance, and we hope to welcome family groups, ranging from grandparents, who may well recall playing Beetle in their formative years, through to young children. There were a few children at our last Beetle session and, without exception, they enjoyed their new experience of a challenge that did not require a machine and a screen!

On Saturday April 30th, my wife will be holding a Mayoress’s Tea Party, (3.00pm to 5.00pm). Tickets are £5.00 and they will be available from the Town Clerk and also from Double and Megson, who we thank for their assistance. There will be a variety of refreshments and, of course, some stalls for your perusal.

Our last ‘do’ will be a “Last Hurrah Quiz Evening” on May 20th, just a few days before I pass on the Chain of Office to my successor (almost certainly, Councillor Colin Pattison). We will be offering hot refreshments, details of which will figure in next month’s issue of “Discovering Bourne”.

Five Tips For A Perfect Viewing – advice from Newton FallowellA viewing is one of the most important parts of the buying process - it allows a prospective buyer to find out more about the property and the area and, ultimately, it will help them decide if it’s really the place for them to call home.

As the seller, you want your property to give off the very best impression and hopefully find someone who thinks it feels like home to them. The process can be long and stressful, so these five tips might just help you along the way, in preparing for, and hosting, the perfect viewing.

1. First impressions really do count!Viewings are always arranged for a mutually appropriate time, so if you are then unable to make it at the last minute, or are browsing the aisles of your local supermarket whilst someone waits on your doorstep, you might as well rule that viewing out. Make sure you’ve spent some time cleaning and making a fresh and welcoming environment. Whilst you want the property to be respectable, remember it isn’t a show home, and showing it’s lived in can help to make people a little more comfortable. Some bright, seasonal flowers and lots of nice natural light always make a property seem more welcoming.

2. Kerb AppealWhilst it’s important to have the inside of the property looking spot on, how does your property look from the road? If you’ve got an overgrown front garden, trim it back and make it presentable, so that, when the potential buyers pull up outside, they can see a clear view of the property. If it looks like it’s poorly maintained, you could get off on the wrong footing,

and they may enter the property with a negative impression.

3. Make it feel like homeIt’s your home and the prospective buyers will be quite aware of this – you know it best so showing off the best features of the property, and even telling little quirky anecdotes of the time your kids turned the under-stairs cupboard into their den, will help them to picture their family calling it home.

4. Don’t be pushyYou’re not there to push someone into buying your home, you’re there to show them around the property and for them to learn how fantastic it is. Sometimes, it takes a buyer a little bit of time to decide if a property is right for them, so making good impressions and answering any questions that they may have will always help them to make a decision of their own.

5. Keep the best for lastMake like a magician and have something up your sleeve that the buyers aren’t expecting. Whilst you should start with an attractive feature, like your fantastic new kitchen, when you’re coming to the end of the viewing slip in another feature that will really impress. Show off your mature, landscaped garden or the stunning views from your loft-room – adding these in last will make your home stick in their mind and will add a talking point when they begin to shortlist further.

| Consumer AdviceBy Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com

Don’t be an “April Fool” when it comes to doorstep gardeners or landscapersSo, the milder spring weather is finally here, the nights are pulling out, and your outdoor space could do with a little TLC. If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house. This could involve laying some turf (or artificial grass), cutting back the hedges, repairing weather-damaged fences, driveways and patios cleaned? Perhaps a complete overhaul or a shiny new block-paved driveway or patio?

Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold-calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is just that!

Remember:• Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment.• Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing.• Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number.• Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out.• Feel free to ask to see their credentials and / or examples of their work. • Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach. If you are in the market for a new driveway or patio, or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer, new fascias, whatever it may be – then always use a reputable tradesperson.

The door-knocking scams of cowboy landscapers and other outdoor trades are becoming more and more common. Needless to say, it is absolutely mandatory that you never pay anyone cash at the door, especially when they haven’t even conducted any work on your premises. Most driveway scammers of this type won’t even have conducted a full inspection of your property and therefore probably have no genuine idea as to the exact costs involved or the length of time it’ll take.

The only way to protect yourself from driveway and patio scams is to always ensure you use a reputable tradesman, like the members of Safe Local Trades.

Safe Local Trades puts you in touch with many local reputable garden landscapers, driveway/patio experts, roofline specialists and much more; all are vetted and come recommended by existing customers. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door, ‘touting’ for business.

If you would like to find a reputable and recommended tradesperson in your area visit www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone free on 0800 014 1832.

Frankie, after her recent move, is pleased to be settling down in her beautiful new premises in Bourne, where she will be offering Colonic Hydrotherapy to her already extensive list of holistic beauty treatments.

Frankie is a firm believer that beauty is more than skin deep. Since completing her professional training in “Colonic Hydrotherapy and Detoxification” with renowned expert Anne-Lise Miller, she has personally benefited from this approach. During her last seven years working at a couple of famous London practices, she has been able to help her prestigious clients recover, with symptoms ranging from abdominal discomfort, bloating and constipation to skin, bladder, pelvic floor and fertility issues. In her own words, she tells the story of her journey through troublesome and delicate health to feeling happier and fitter than ever before:

“I trained in Colonic Hydrotherapy seven years ago in Scotland. It was an extensive course, taking over a year to fully qualify and was a pivotal moment in my life. It was much more than just training in a new treatment. It made me aware of how my diet and lifestyle impacted on my health and well-being, and the “colonic” gave me the physical incentive to make the changes. I was working at a local salon at the time. Many clients displayed symptoms that they would regard as ‘normal’, yet which substantially affected their well-being. It was not uncommon to hear of constipation, IBS, bloating, skin conditions, depression, lack of energy… the list went on and I personally felt that I could relate to all of them to some

extent. I was also overweight and suffering from recurrent bladder infections, which seemed to turn up whenever my bowel was slowing down. In Scotland, I learnt that these were all symptoms of something lying much deeper in my system. I learnt how to listen to my body and the signs/symptoms it was presenting to me and how to get to the root. Most importantly, I learnt why taking care of the colon is so important, and experienced immediate relief from my symptoms. Opening my own premises is a very significant step for me because it means that I can now create a space that is exactly as it should be for healing and Colonic Hydrotherapy. My priority is for my clients to feel safe and cared for. Naturally, we all feel vulnerable and a little nervous about “colonic”, which is why the clinic is discrete, calm, private and with its own parking outside. Plenty of time will be allowed in your appointment so you can feel comfortable in knowing you won’t be rushed or have far to travel to your car.”

What happens during a “colonic”? During a treatment, the client will be laid on the couch in complete comfort and covered with a towel. Modesty is maintained at all times. Warm filtered water is gently introduced to the colon via a small tube that connects to a waste pipe allowing the removal of faecal matters. All is sealed and odourless. Specialised massage techniques are also applied to release abdominal tension and gut spasms.

How does a “colonic” work and what are the benefits? Of all the processes essential to good health, elimination is certainly one of the most important. When a bowel is underactive, toxic wastes are more likely to be re-absorbed through the bowel wall which is why “colonic” underpins all detoxification programme.

For best results, colonic hydrotherapy is best done in conjunction with simple dietary and life-style adjustment. This can be discussed as part of the treatment.

www.phiphibhwclinic.com

There are many commonly reported health problems caused by colon toxicity, which will be helped by colonic hydrotherapy.

These include: Constipation, Bloating, Skin problems, Weight problems, Fatigue, Candida and bladder symptoms, Muscle and joint pain, Menopausal symptoms, Difficulties conceiving, Sleep problems, Body odour, Halitosis, Flatulence, Parasite infection

Colonic Treatment including Consultation (90 minutes) £75 A full dietary and lifestyle consultation is carried out, followed by a “colonic” and homecare programme. The recommended treatment, if you are new to colon hydrotherapy.

Course of three treatments (3 x 90 minute treatments) £190

Colonic treatment without consultation £65 Ideal for someone who is familiar with colon hydrotherapy and doesn’t require a consultation

There is no ‘one size fits all’ answer, but if you are one of those parents wondering what to do next, having tried everything you can think of and ready to ‘walk off into the sunset’, here are some suggestions.

Children want their parents to be pleased with them and proud of them, and parents can use this desire to manage their children’s behaviour.

For the next few days, try changing everything you say to your child into a positive interaction. In other words, tell your child what you want them to do - not what you don’t want them to do. So, for example, “Don’t kick the door” becomes “Keep your feet on the floor”. Think about everything you say to your child, and try to say the positive version.

Younger children respond well to distraction, as they are naturally curious. If they are getting silly or defiant, say nothing, but start doing something that makes them laugh, or sparks their interest. This could be something as simple as looking out of the window and commenting on what you see, or marching up and down, saluting and chanting “Left, right, left, right”. You could

| Your Health advice from Caroline Mentzel, Behaviour management consultant

How can I get my child to behave? This is a question many parents ask.

start playing with Lego, toy cars, or colouring. Your child is likely to want to join in, especially if siblings are joining in.

We all need acknowledgement and attention from other people. It helps us to feel good about ourselves and gives us a sense of belonging and value. Children are no different. However, they use behaviour to attract attention, and often it’s negative behaviour that achieves results.

If our child is playing calmly, quietly and behaving well, we tend to take the opportunity to make a phone call, do some jobs etc. As soon as it makes a fuss, we attend to it and meet its need, by providing a drink, picking it up, giving it a

hug and soothing it. Our child may come to the conclusion that, if it is quiet and undemanding, it is ignored, but when it makes a fuss, it receives attention. It’s no surprise, then, that they soon become attention-seeking by using negative behaviour.

We could prevent this by giving positive attention when they are being good. Make some positive comments about how well your child is eating their dinner or playing nicely.

If you wish to submit a question about behaviour, please contact me on 07958 737252 or [email protected] and the most FAQ will be addressed in the June issue.

A 30 minute workout for women that really works

Last month and now this, Claire Saunders from Renu, shares her top Healthy Habits to keep you on track, and make 2016 the year to love the way you look!

Don’t allow yourself to be tempted It could well be that you still have sugary, fattening foods hanging around the house. If that is the case, YOU WILL eat them! Instead, give them away to the local food bank, freeze them or, at the very least, put them in a box and seal it up, to be opened when you have reached your goal.

The thirty minute rule! Time is precious. Plan your activity

schedule and put it in your diary. Did you know that, if you exercise for thirty minutes, three times a week for four weeks in a row, you are 80% more likely to achieve your goals? It may be only thirty minutes, but if you do not put it in your diary, you will probably let other things get in the way. Put this at the top of your priority list, arranging other events around it, and you will see and feel the difference! You are far more likely to stick with your eating plan if you are keeping the thirty minute rule.

Develop a good sleep routineSleep is where the body resets and burns fat. Cut down your

“screen time” in the evening and try relaxing in a hot bath instead. Give yourself the time to relax and recuperate from the pressures of the day and treat yourself to some essential bath oils, rather than fattening snacks.

Reveal your inner radianceLife is so hectic these days and the stresses and strains of daily life can leave us putting our own needs last. This can lead to another year of disapproving looks at ourselves in the mirror. A well-nourished, rested body will make you exude radiance in your skin and body, and boost your energy levels.

Keeping motivation on a healthy eating routine or diet is not easy. Whilst you may have vowed that you were going to relinquish comfort foods and take up exercise more regularly, the reality of maintaining motivation in the longer term can be a challenge for the best of us.

cut straight across the nail and avoid any curves. The Wellhead podiatry team offer professional nail cutting and care, which is particularly beneficial for those with limited mobility.

3. KEEP yOuR FEET clEAn AnD DRy

“Most people know that keeping your feet clean is important, but drying them well is also vital,” Amy says. Fungal infections, such as tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) are very common, but can be tricky to treat. Drying between your toes is a good preventative measure for fungal problems.

4. cHEcK yOuR FEET REGulARly

Your feet take a lot of abuse and, when running, the

pressure of up to four times your body weight goes through them. As a result, Amy advises regular check-ups, particularly for higher risk groups, such as those with diabetes, poor circulation or lack of sensation.

5. SEE A PROFESSiOnAl

Amy says that is too easy to ignore, or attempt to self-treat, foot problems. “People are in the habit of seeing dentists and opticians, but people often come to us, only when their problems are more advanced, which can make treatments less effective, so getting professional diagnosis and advice is the key.

For basic footcare, nail cutting, involuted and ingrowing toenails, nail and skin infections, aches and pains, biomechanical issues, and diabetic footcare, contact us for an appointment.

“Feet are extremely complex,” Amy says, “but there are five really simple things people can do to maximise foot health”.

1. WEAR THE RiGHT SHOES

“It sounds obvious, but wearing good quality and well-fitting shoes is really important,” advises Amy. Poor footwear can cause common problems like corns and calluses, but can also contribute to more chronic, biomechanical disorders like plantar fasciopathy (heel pain). Feet also expand over the course of a day, so another tip is to avoid shoe shopping in the morning, or you may find that your new shoes are too tight by the afternoon!

2. cuT yOuR nAilS cORREcTly

“At the Wellhead Practice, we are very experienced in surgical procedures for onychocryptosis (ingrowing toenails),” Amy says, “but you can minimise the risk by ensuring you cut your nails correctly and regularly”. The best technique is to

A weight-loss expert is calling on adults from Bourne to take time out of their busy lives to think about their health and wellbeing as part of a new government campaign that says it’s

never too late to make a change.

Slimming World are partners in Public Health England’s new “One You” campaign, which aims to support adults to make simple changes towards a healthier and happier life, and provide the tools, motivational support and encouragement every step of the way.

Jo Bradford, who runs a Slimming World group in Bourne, said: “One You is about helping adults take time out of their busy lives to think about their own health and wellbeing. Because, after all, there is only one you - and it’s never too late to start making small changes. A few new healthy habits could be all it takes to live a longer, healthier and happier life.”

Jo says that the government’s renewed focus on public health has never been more vital, as around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. “As well as the serious physical health conditions obesity can lead to – from diabetes and raised blood pressure to the increased risk of heart disease and cancer – people who struggle with their weight often experience low confidence and poor self-esteem.

“One You is a perfect fit for Slimming World. We know that making healthy lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet and becoming more active, can have a huge impact on your health right away. It also helps raise self-esteem and self-confidence, by helping people to feel more in control of their own lives. Plus, these behaviours can be passed on to the whole family, meaning the next generation grows up with healthy habits too.”

It’s really easy to get involved with One You. There is a link from Slimming World’s website to the ‘How are You?’ free quiz – a quick and easy quiz to help people recognise the things they can do to improve their health in the long term, from eating well to moving more, or being smoke-free to drinking less.

Delightfully located between Bourne and Stamford, Witham Hall continues to enhance its standing as a leading co-educational Preparatory School (ages 4-13) both regionally and nationally. The school has seen a 10% growth in numbers within the last five years, and further expansion, noticeably within the Pre-Prep, reflects the healthy demand for places. Contemporary science laboratories and a new library and resource centre were followed last year by the development of the Pre-Prep, allowing for a two-form entry across all Years 1 to 3. The school shortly embarks on its most significant project to date, with the building of a state-of-the-art sports complex, incorporating sports hall, dance/drama studio, audio-visual room, fitness suite and extensive changing facilities. Collectively, the developments reflect the clear all-round ambition of the Headmaster, Mr Charles Welch, now in his seventh year at the helm.Oundle, Oakham, Uppingham, Repton, Rugby, Stamford and Stowe are the most popular destinations for Witham pupils at age thirteen, but some go further afield, including

Eton, Shrewsbury and Queen Margaret’s, York. Scholarship success is outstanding - a cohort of thirty-two pupils gained a record-breaking nineteen scholarships to their chosen Senior Schools in 2015. Awards across all disciplines –

academic, art, drama, music and sport – highlight the breadth of opportunity the school provides, also reflected in a Witham pupil reaching the national finals of the Junior Memory Championships (twenty make it through to this stage from 25,000 entries); another the National Biathlon Finals at the Olympic Park, London; and, at eight years and one hundred and forty-seven days old, Matilda Craven becoming the youngest archer to be awarded the G.B. archery title of “Junior Master Bowman”.Engagement with the local community is of great importance, with a number of local schools benefitting from the sharing of facilities and teaching expertise. Coupled with strong links with the village and church, the school also plays host to a range of local sporting clubs. Overseas, the school has an exciting and exclusive partnership with the Kiri Bah Ler community in Northern Cambodia. Led by their own enterprise initiatives, pupils have pledged to raise £16,000 over the 2015/16 academic year to build the school in Kiri Bah Ler. In doing so, they will establish and develop sustainable relationships to greatly benefit the community and, at the same time, enhance their own opportunities, experiences and understanding of the world around them. You may think that April is too early for tennis, but check out what your local tennis club has to offer, at their Open Day on Sunday April 24th. There are eight tennis courts, two of which are floodlit for winter evenings, and five on impeccably maintained grass. They are available from May to September, for that extra-special experience of playing lawn tennis in the magnificent, walled Monks Garden - the perfect setting for those wishing to participate in organised social tennis, league matches, or to simply come down for a friendly ‘knock’. Social tennis, match-play and a coaching programme are the cornerstones of the club. Social tennis sessions for members are on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, throughout the year, and Thursday evenings on the grass in the summer. The club enters teams in the Lincolnshire, Peterborough and District, and AEGON tennis leagues. A very important aspect is the club’s Junior Development Programme, run in conjunction with its coaching partner, “ON2COURT”. Regular junior coaching sessions for all abilities are held on a Friday afternoon from 4pm, and on Saturday from 9am. Additional performance programmes help young players to further develop their skills, providing a gateway to being part of a team, and playing in AEGON and LTA tournaments. Personal coaching for all members is also available. The club is affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), entitling members who are also BTM members, to be included in the Wimbledon Ticket Ballot. The club has recently achieved Sports England Tennismark Accreditation, in recognition of being a safe, welcoming and inclusive venue. Early March saw students from Bourne Academy put on their annual Academy Musical which this year was the Broadway hit, ‘Hairspray’. Under the guidance of the staff production managers, a cast of sixty-five students from all years took to the stage to perform for three evening performances. The main roles for the show were performed by the Year 13 performing Arts group, and the technical, front of house and stage management side of the production was provided by the Year 12 AS students.

Head of Drama, Ted Fisk, said: “We are always very proud of the students who take part in the show and this year was no exception, as students were thoroughly committed - a particularly talented crop of Performing Artists. It has truly been a whole school musical, with representation from every House and every year group. All years have greatly enjoyed the experience. We were very

Success for Well-Groomed Academy!fortunate this year to be able to welcome our new Head of Music, Mr Green, who has been a fantastic Musical Director. Furthermore, the band that rehearsed tirelessly were very professional, as were all the star performers on stage.”

Despite the increased emphasis on the EBAC, Bourne Academy wholeheartedly supports the Arts and is even working towards a renewal of their “Artsmark” status.

“Hairspray” was a sell-out for all three evening performances and the primary school students were also pleased to have received a special viewing of the dress rehearsal. The cast of sixty-five students was clearly proud of the week’s achievements and rightly so; it was indeed a fabulous spectacle, as both the music and drama departments continue to set themselves such high standards of performance and professionalism.

Shakespeare’s Language – What’s that all about then? This month, the world remembers Britain’s greatest poet/playwright, as April 23rd is the day, four hundred years ago, that he “shuffled off this mortal coil” (Hamlet’s way of saying that he died!)If you have ever had to struggle with Shakespeare’s obscure language from long ago, (and who hasn’t – the national Curriculum being what it is?) help is at hand, on the internet.“no Fear Shakespeare” puts Shakespeare’s language side-by-side with a facing-page translation into modern English, the kind of English people actually speak today.Sonnet 98 – “From You Have I Been Absent In The Spring” shows just how accessible the Bard’s words could actually become:

From you have I been absent in the spring,When proud-pied April, dressed in all his trim,Hath put a spirit of youth in everything,That heavy Saturn laughed and leapt with him.

Yet nor the lays of birds, nor the sweet smellOf different flow’rs in odour and in hue,Could make me any summer’s story tell,Or from their proud lap pluck them where they grew.Nor did I wonder at the lily’s white,Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose; They were but sweet, but figures of delight,Drawn after you, you pattern of all those.Yet seemed it winter still, and, you away,As with your shadow I with these did play.

I was away from you during the spring, when splendid April in all its finery made everything feel so young that even Saturn, the god of old age and gloominess, laughed and leaped along with it. But neither the songs of birds nor the sweet smell of all the various flowers could make me feel like it was summer or inspire me to go flower picking. I wasn’t amazed by how white the lily was, nor did I praise the deep red of the roses. They were only sweet, only pictures of delight, drawn in imitation of you, the archetype of spring. It seemed like it was still winter and, with you away, I played with these flowers as if I were playing with your reflection.

It is a voluntary organisation, aiming to help the housebound, by providing a service to assist carers and their families in South Lincolnshire, across Bourne, Stamford, The Deepings, and their surrounding villages, and the pE9 villages of Rutland and East northamptonshire. It is a registered charity which works closely with other caring organisations.

The Service provides a home-sitting service for the numerous people who are practically housebound, because of the 24-hour care they are providing for dependent relatives and friends. These include both frail, elderly people and people incapacitated through chronic illness. The service provides approximately 2,000 hours of sitting in the year.

• The service is free to carers. We rely on donations from many different sources.

• This is a sitter service, so there are no nursing or lifting duties, nor is medication given.

We urgently need new volunteers to meet the demands of our service. • We provide a service for a few hours during the day or evening, and at weekends, so if you have any time when you could be a volunteer sitter, be it once a week or even once a month, we could use your help! You will be given any appropriate training that you require, and although the position is voluntary, you will receive travel expenses where appropriate. You will also be providing an invaluable service to both the carer and their dependent relative.

• No formal qualifications are needed; we look for people who are caring, with an interest in people, kind, with a sense of humour, and a common sense approach to life. You will need to undergo a DBS check.

You can contact us at the address and telephone number below or pop into our office at Wake House for an informal chat about the service

we offer.

IT’S NoT juST FLoWerS THAT rISe IN THe SPrING!

Ticks are part of the spider family. They feed off the blood of animals, after which they drop to the ground and lay their eggs. The three main sources of ticks in this country are sheep, deer and hedgehogs. However, they will sometimes attach to dogs, cats, humans and other animals. When one of my sons was a baby, I was horrified to find a tick attached to his head after playing in grass in Scotland.

Before a tick feeds, it looks like a small spider. It sits on the top of grass stalks with its front legs held up waiting for an animal to come by. Once it gets onto the animal, it crawls up the body and starts to feed . The animal does not usually feel this, as the tick injects a local anaesthetic along with anticoagulants to make the blood flow. The body of the tick now grows hugely and turns a grey colour. This is the stage that the tick becomes visible .

After feeding for a day or so, the tick detaches and drops to the ground. When removing a tick, it is important not to squeeze it, as this can increase the risk of infections being passed from

For more information, please contact the surgery on 01778 422863.

Last year, we saw a lot of ticks and the relatively mild winter this year will have done little to reduce the numbers for this spring. Ticks will start to rise out of the ground in the next two months, when we get the warmer spring weather. Now is a good time to think about tick treatment.

the tick. The mouthparts of the tick need to be grasped close to the skin with something like tweezers and the tick removed by twisting, not pulling. There is a very useful tool called the “O’Tom Tick Twister” which makes tick removal much easier. Your veterinary surgeon will be able to provide these.

The most worrying disease that can be transmitted by ticks is Lyme disease, which is caused by bacteria, and is on the increase in recent years. The most common symptoms in dogs and cats are lethargy, joint pain and fever, which can occur months after the tick bite . Other symptoms include neurological symptoms, heart disease and meningitis. Once diagnosed, the disease is easily treated in its earlier stages with a certain type of antibiotic. This same disease can also affect humans with the same symptoms. Infected people will often develop a skin rash a few days or weeks after the bite, that often looks like a target with a central circle at the bite site and an outer ring.

There are several treatments on the market that kill and repel ticks. Take care as many of the modern flea preparations do not kill ticks. Talk to your veterinary surgery for more information.

Hmmmm...

You finally reach the stage when you have time on your hands – even with juggling various family duties, personal household and health arrangements – time to decide holiday arrangements, to see plans for the new garden layout finally materialise, to realise your deep hopes to make new friends (especially if you’ve recently moved to a new area or have lost a partner), to develop your interests and skills at your own time and speed: Bourne U3A offers you such choices.

Bourne U3A is specially set up to offer opportunities for the retired and semi-retired to enjoy and participate, lead and present, learn and explore, through a full and varied programme of regular small group activities, run by and for its members. Presently, there are nearly sixty groups meeting weekly or monthly locally for its almost five hundred members. Their activities range from learning French to walking the area - from day trips out to nearby locations of scientific, historical, natural or other particular interest – from taking part in dancing, play reading and drama to learning to write, manage stocks and shares, tasting wine and having meals

out – from table tennis to appreciating classical music – from discovering military and aviation history to expressing your creativity through art, poetry, culinary delights and craftwork. Our largest groups are gardening, country walking and table tennis, but there is still room for more to join. The list could go on and on. And the secret is … we do it together with like-minded folk.

We also hold a monthly main meeting for all members at the Corn Exchange Bourne. Speakers present an illustrated talk on a good variety of subjects and this is followed by refreshments and a time to meet with old friends and make new ones.

Many experts in the field of IT security are predicting that 2016 will be the worst year ever for scammers and hackers. Since the start of the year we have already witnessed attacks on services at the BBC, HSBC Bank and Lincolnshire County Council and I am sure there are others that have been less publicly acknowledged.

Last month, in part one of this article, I focused on the different types of backup that you should run to help protect you from loss of data. In part two I am changing this focus to more general advice to help you avoid becoming a successful target for these scammers and villains.

Security Suite: In my opinion these are a must have. The current three top performers are Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton. Avast is currently the best of the ‘free antivirus’ tools but I would recommend upgrading from a free solution to a fully paid security suite.

Email care: Be careful when using your email as it is a common place for hackers to ‘hook’ you in to a website or attachment that contains malware. Most security suites have email scanners built in but these only offer limited protection. Bottom line, if you are not 100% that an email with a web-link or attachment is valid do not open it. Generally financial organisations do not send email that contains attachments. More common is for them to direct you to the secure message system

associated with your bank account, requiring you to login to your account using the usual security access codes.

Telephone Scam Awareness: A very common tactic is for a hacker to call you and claim they are from a well-known company. They will then persuade you that there is an issue with your system and that they need to log on to correct it. At this point they may load malware onto your system. This is actually an easy one to ‘police’. NONE OF THESE CALLS ARE VALID – IGNORE THEM.

Password Selection: I know many of you will hate this one but do not use the same password for different services. Also make your password complex (ie. Uppercase, lowercase, a symbol and a number). The common advice from security experts is not to write these down but if that is what you have to do to remember them then do it. The best way of recording them is to have a code that only you know, so what appears on the page is slightly different to the actual password. There are also online cloud based solutions that will store your passwords in an encrypted format so you can access them from any device as needed (e.g. www.passwordbox.com)

If all this makes you concerned about the security of your system then good, you should be. However, if you follow these steps you will greatly reduce your risk of being attacked.

April sees our Club Spotlight shining, appropriately enough, on a thriving theatre school, whose ambitious Director, Andrew Clingo, here sheds light on to this Bourne-based group.“Rock You Theatre School” (RYTS) was formed in 2015, and our aim is simple: to provide quality, performance-based training in theatre and the performing arts, at an affordable price. We are absolutely passionate about theatre, and believe you won’t get better training locally. Our Summer School in August 2015 saw thirty students acting, dancing and singing their way through Willy Rusell’s “Our Day Out”, and our December Showcase was “Annie Jr” which helped us to successfully raise £390.43 for the Thorpe Hall Hospice Appeal. Our 2016 Summer School will be “Oliver”. Here, the children will work intensively on the drama, dance and singing from “Oliver”, for a performance for family and friends on the Friday evening. You do not need to attend Rock You Theatre School classes to attend our Summer School. The “Rock You” format is very simple: students attend for three hours a week on a Saturday afternoon from 2.00 – 5.00pm. The fi rst hour is a Musical Theatre lesson (basically singing and dancing at the same time!) which involves all of the pupils working together. For hours two and three, the school splits into two groups and each group will have a fi fty-fi ve minute dance and drama lesson

with a short, ten minute break between the two sessions. Expectations for good behaviour and outstanding performance are maintained through both disciplines, as we want our youngsters to stand out from the crowd, and remember that what we teach them at RYTS are skills that don’t vanish when the curtain falls – they are skills for life.Although we hold our classes at Bourne Abbey Primary Academy, you do not have to attend Bourne Abbey to join us. We enrol students between the ages of seven and sixteen, three times a year – in January, April and September. Prospective students and their parents are very welcome to visit the school, by prior arrangement, at any time.We are absolutely committed to the welfare and safety of children in our care and, as such, all staff working at RYTS satisfy the requirements of the enhanced level, DBS check to ensure their suitability for working with us.

More information can be found on our website www.rockyoutheatreschool.co.uk, by e-mailing us mail@rockyoutheatreschool, or by giving us a call on 01778 345857. We also have Facebook and Instagram accounts to keep up to date with our news and performances.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings – “Boy Racers” Beware! I recently posted a picture on the team Facebook page of a car that had been seized, under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, and this caused a bit of a debate. As a result, I decided to discuss this piece of legislation here and consider just what powers the police have.

The Act was brought in to deal with vehicles being used on a road in a manner which causes alarm, distress or annoyance, or where it amounts to careless or inconsiderate driving. An example might be performing screeching ‘handbrake turns’ in a housing estate or revving the engine while parked on the roadside.

It is important to explain the definition of a “road”, as it is more than you might think. A road is any highway and any other road to which the public has access and includes public highways, footpaths and bridle ways. It also includes road verges.

The Act states that, if a vehicle is driven in such a manner, then a constable or a PCSO can seize the vehicle and the driver can be reported for the offence. The driver will then be given a notice explaining how they can reclaim the vehicle. Should the vehicle not be claimed, then it is disposed of. There are recovery and storage costs to pay, before the vehicle is released.

On the first occasion of such driving, the driver of the vehicle will be given a warning which remains with both the driver AND the vehicle for twelve months. That means if the driver drives another vehicle in the same manner, or another driver drives the same vehicle in a similar manner, then the offence is committed, and the vehicle can be seized. The warning is still in force for the full twelve months after being seized, and further breaches can again result in seizure.

| A little bit of History

The hunts had a reputation in the neighbourhood for pursuing their activities with scant regard for person and property because this was the sport of the landed gentry and as they were also usually magistrates, few dared complain even though there were scenes of extreme cruelty to animals.

One such incident involved Sir John Trollope’s hounds that met at Manthorpe on Saturday 22nd January 1859 and were soon chasing a fox into Bourne along South Road. The animal ran through the vicarage garden, on to the Abbey Lawn and back into the garden, taking refuge behind some flower pots in an outhouse but was soon discovered and a newspaper reported the horrifying events that followed:

“The hounds and huntsmen were

soon upon him and he was speedily doomed to death. He was then brought on to the lawn and after the brush and head had been cut off, the master of the hounds stepped forward and threw the body of the fox into the air to fall amongst the dogs, which in a very few moments, tore it to pieces and consumed it.”

There were many similar incidents and because hunting invariably involved the gentry, there was great public amusement whenever they suffered indignities such as that which occurred on Saturday 25th January 1850, as riders with the Cottesmore came to grief while in full pursuit on the outskirts of Bourne.

The hounds raised a fox and chased it across the countryside around Edenham where it crossed the river, badly swollen by thawing snow, but

when they attempted to follow, several riders were swept off their horses and left floundering in the water, their hats floating ignominiously downstream as they struggled to reach the safety of the bank, a tale that was recounted in some detail and with much hilarity in the hostelries around Bourne for many weeks.

Fox hunting has become a controversial and emotive subject in recent years, resulting in the Hunting Act of 2005 which banned the pursuit of wild animals with dogs although the traditional meets continue, particularly on Boxing Day, to give our market towns a colourful occasion but without the cruelty.

archive photograph of the cottesmore Hunt meeting in the market place at Bourne in 1914.

in past times, Bourne was often the centre of fox hunting activity in South Lincolnshire, one of the most active being the cottesmore Hunt, established in 1666 by Viscount Lowther, together with the pack owned by Sir John Trollope, who became the first Lord Kesteven when he was raised to the peerage in 1869.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

What is it about driving around Deeping and beyond that can cause so much stress these days?

Some of the factors that contribute to the situation are within our control as drivers, and some are not. It does help to recognise which issues each of us have the ability to affect and which ones we have little control over, because, attempting to resolve issues that are not within our capability is a sure cause for stress.

It seems that separation gaps between vehicles are either being disregarded by many or perhaps just forgotten. There actually should be a four second gap, leading up to the vehicle in front, in wet conditions – any closer than that on our roads of 50 mph+, and the ability to stop in time to prevent a collision is seriously reduced.

Whilst we have little control over the weather

conditions when we drive, problems can occur when we don’t acknowledge the adverse weather conditions as we can sometimes drive at the same speed, using the same separation gaps, not allowing any time to break for refreshment, relax, recharge in what are often driving conditions that require high levels of concentration.

The ways in which roads have been designed can raise stress levels, with many that were simply not designed for the volume of modern day driving, for example narrow roads, parked cars both sides, poor street lighting, insufficient white paint and obstacles that restrict vision.

We’ve been running our “Art for All sessions” for people living with dementia for about three years now. The sessions are led by Barbara Barker who is a former carer and who has taught art for fifty years! She is an accomplished artist in her own right, as was her husband, and she also teaches art classes for U3A in Bourne.

During the past three years our members have produced the designs for note cards, Christmas cards and a 2016 calendar. The members have raised lots of money for our charity, selling these items. Their work has also been included in three local art exhibitions.

We’re planning another retrospective exhibition at St James the Great church in Aslackby later this summer. This show will include work done in the past, as well as our more recent pieces.

If you would like to know more about Art for All or any of the other activities and support services, please contact Kate Marshall, Memory Healthcare Worker, Dementia Support South Lincs, 01778 426756/07867635611.

| In the Hot Seat

The “Hot Seat” this month is occupied by a Kirkby Underwood resident, Paul Ross, who turns fifty in November this year. Early days in Australia and South Africa were followed by a rather less exotic twenty-three years in Loughborough. After Grammar School, then business studies at the local college, Paul began life in the world of Life Insurance and Pensions, working for Britannic, United Friendly and then Refuge Assurance. Almost twenty years ago, Paul, wife Diane and children Matthew and Bethany, made the move to Bourne. In 2004, he decided to become an Independent Financial Adviser and joined Landmark as a self- employed adviser. “I really enjoy sorting out peoples finances, particularly as pensions and investments are an absolute minefield, and I always try to keep things as simple as possible for my clients”, he adds.

1 WHERE WERE You boRN, ANd WHAT iS YouR FAvouRiTE MEMoRY oF YouR CHiLdHood?

I was born in Lewisham Hospital, London and then immediately moved to Ashford, Kent. My earliest favourite memory was when we emigrated to Sydney (as a “£10 Pom”) to start a new life. Experiencing that way of life and feeding kangaroos and koalas was an amazing experience; it’s probably why I enjoy travelling so much!

2 WHo HAS HAd THE gREATEST iNFLuENCE oN YouR LiFE ANd WHY?

That has to be Diane, my wife of twenty-one years. I’m a bit like a wind-up toy, I buzz around all over the place, but Diane reins me in but in a positive way, and grounds me. We are such great friends and she organises our life extremely well - something I’m not too good at myself.

3 WHiCH TWo CHARACTERS, ALivE oR NoT, WouLd You MoST ENjoY SHARiNg A MEAL WiTH ANd WHY?

I’m a big fan of David Beckham, not just for his football, but he seems so humble and, although he is very wealthy, he’s not arrogant with it. I like the fact that he tries to make a difference to peoples’ lives and has such great family values. I would also like to meet Karren Brady, (off “The Apprentice”) as she is so driven and ambitious, like myself, but I’d hate to be married to her though - she’d drive me nuts!

4 HoW WouLd You dESCRibE YouRSELF iN oNLY FivE WoRdS?

Open, Driven, Aspirational, Adventurous, Amenable.

5 iF THERE WAS oNE THiNg WHiCH You CouLd CHANgE AbouT bouRNE, WHAT WouLd iT bE ANd WHY?

Create a business centre like Eventus in Deeping, as there is a huge lack of space for new and existing businesses.

6 WHAT AdviCE WouLd You givE To A “SixTEEN-YEAR-oLd You”?

Never focus on money, focus on your dreams and aspirations and, whatever happens in your life to try and distract you, don’t let it! You could be missing that one opportunity that could change your life. Create life goals and write them down.
