A reminder, if you haven’t already been dropped enough hints by the dear old thing, that June 19th is Father’s Day, that annual opportunity to give him some respite from sink, utility room and even garden. How about this as a lovely definition of a father - a man whose wallet holds photographs of his children where once there was money? I send love and Happy Father’s Day greetings to my Dad and husband, Chris.

What’s also really special about this month for me, is that my big sister, and best friend, Paula Peake will be celebrating her fiftieth birthday on June 9th. (“I don’t think she looks it either” – Ed.) This month, we focus on some other big birthdays - Bourne Westfield are coming up forty, The Inner Wheel in Bourne has been turning for twenty-five years, and Renu are almost ten!

The highlight of June is not just Father’s Day on June 19th, but the fact that, on that day the fantastic Bourne Classic Car and Bike Carnival will be held on the Wellhead, bigger, busier and brighter than ever before. Please come and enjoy what looks like being a brilliant day out for everyone.

This month’s issue of “Discovering Bourne” will hopefully provide for you all an antidote to the blanket coverage in recent weeks of the E.U. Referendum debate. If nothing else, the whole rigmarole will have enabled our language to become enriched, with the addition of “Brexit” and “Bremain”. Any chance, do you think, that, within a few months, we’ll be seeking a “Breturn” to the Community, or will “Brexhaustion” have set in?

This month, we have the usual array of informative contributions from our health, legal, financial, horticultural, veterinary, computer, historical, food and travel experts … and a little bit about our revered Queen, as she’s another one having a special birthday.

Finally, as yet another Father’s Day brings forth wine, socks and the amusing cards …

Q. How does a father exercise on the beach?

A. By sucking in his stomach every time a bikini approaches!

Enjoy this month’s read, and to all of those of you involved in exams, good luck – the long holiday will make up for it!

During our recent conversation, which covered the vast range of services on offer these days, I was particularly struck by Claire’s admission that almost every way in which her initial concept, (holistic treatments with a bit of pilates and yoga) has evolved, has been in response to the needs of her clients – their suggestions and opinions have been the driver for almost everything which now attracts so many ladies, (and some men who attend for pilates and treatments) to this “One-Stop Shop for Well-being”. The ladies-only gym is a recent case-in-point, along with the incredibly popular “30 minute workout” idea – a simple, yet remarkably effective notion that fits in a short burst of activity into the busy daily schedule of so many ladies.Alongside the newly introduced services offered by Claire and her fourteen staff specialists, are the long-standing favourites. Seven designated rooms offer beauty advice and treatments, including an anti-ageing option, and Claire is proud to see Renu lauded as a “Decleor Platinum Salon of the Year”; acupuncture, podiatry

and reflexology are all here; a hairdressing salon, a sunbed and a very well-frequented studio all offer so many different opportunities to focus on, and gain expert advice and encouragement to strive for, that body beautiful.Ten years have seen so much progress in Renu’s provision of healthy activities and ways in which all manner of beauty treatments can benefit its clients. Claire is happy with this formula, whilst still willing to listen to requests for possible ways to take Renu further forward. What she does enjoy focusing on now, though, is the means by which access to everything can be facilitated even more, be it on social media with newsletters, informing everyone about facilities and offers, or advice on dietary and food issues, with a “recipe of the month” a possibility.Whatever this remarkably ambitious and passionate lady decides for the future, the people of this area can continue to think themselves very fortunate that, right here, in Bourne, is one very special centre of excellence - a true “One-Stop Shop for Well-being”.

Claire Saunders and her dedicated team at Renu are celebrating this month, having seen ten successful years in the town pass, first at their West Street premises but more recently on Abbey Road, in the building which, for many years, housed a business, rather less inclined towards health, fitness and general well-being … the Marquis of Granby!

“ I was apprehensive at the start as I’ve never been one for the gym, but six weeks in, the results speak for themselves. I’m really enjoying it, the

staff and support is second to none.”

You can get a serious workout without being serious – it’s okay to have fun. In fact, the more fun your workouts are, the more you’re going to look forward to, and be committed to them over the long-term. There’s absolutely no doubt that the right friend to exercise with can make your workouts more fun. Being able to laugh, encourage and motivate will make them much more enjoyable. Here are some of the benefits of working out with a friend:

Fewer skipped workouts Scheduling a gym session with a friend helps hold you accountable for getting your workout in. Meeting someone to exercise with not only motivates you to show up, but to work hard as well.

Push yourself further Exercising with another person pushes you to do your workout and do it to the best of your ability. A bit of friendly banter and encouragement can mean you get a little bit more out of your exercise session.

Try new exercises Going to the gym with a friend is the perfect time to try out new exercises or classes. When trying something new, your friend will provide a confidence boost and keep your workouts interesting. At Renu, you can try up to nineteen classes a week, as part of your membership.

Time Flies “Time flies when you’re having fun!”… or at least when you are distracted. Having someone to chat with lets you focus on

something other than just your workout, making the time go by faster.

Recover together Socialising can often be a reason you may get out of your exercise routine. A friend who’s worked up a sweat with you is likely to want to join you for a healthy post-exercise meal or snack, so you get the best of both worlds!

If you would like a free trial, for either you or your friend, please call us on 01778 423923

We know the saying that goes, “less is more”, but let’s be honest. sometimes, two is just plain better than one. When it comes to working out, having a friend along for the ride can be beneficial.

Local companies join to raise money for local charityTwo financial companies have teamed up to raise money for a local charity, the Phoebe Research Fund. Pilot Fish in Bourne have united with the Peterborough branch of Santander, to organise a business networking event at the William Cecil Hotel in Stamford, which will be held on Wednesday June 15th, (5pm -7pm).

The Peterborough Branch of Santander had made the Phoebe Research Fund their charity of the year, following a presentation by the founder Mrs Zoe Crowson. Phoebe, Zoe’s daughter has Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare, genetic inherited condition which causes her skin to be very fragile and blister or shear away with minimal friction or trauma. Funds raised will help to finance essential research, carried out by Professor John McGrath at King’s College, London.

Pilot Fish is a long standing

supporter of the charity and was delighted when Santander announced their support in January. The two companies have a good working relationship, offering complementary commercial finance services to businesses. The William Cecil Hotel agreed to host the event, offering their lawns and marquee for the function.

Entry will be for ticket-holders only, a ticket being a suggested donation of £20.00, which will include a welcome refreshment, and an afternoon tea. Midway

through the event, Mr Tim Pike, Deputy Agent for the Bank

of England, will give a topical and lively talk.

Guests will include representatives from a wide selection of local businesses, and staff from Santander and Pilot Fish will be on hand throughout the event to facilitate networking and make introductions.

For tickets, or any further information, contact Kate at Pilot Fish on 01778 309777, or e-mail [email protected].

The Evergreen Care Trust need more BefriendersThe Evergreen Care Trust runs a very successful “befriending” service for the benefit of people in Stamford, Bourne and The Deepings. Due to an increased need, Evergreen are looking for people who would like to join their team of befrienders. Evergreen

currently has a team of sixty befriender volunteers, all of whom give an hour or two a week of their time, in order to build a meaningful friendship with lonely adults who are experiencing periods of vulnerability in their life.

Yvette Powell, Evergreen’s “Befriender Lead” says, “We believe that committed friendships can be life-transforming for those who are lonely and isolated. This requires long-term commitment and is mutually rewarding. A regular visit, a cuppa and a chat, or a little outing is all it takes to make a difference. This could be as little as one hour

a week. The benefits for both parties hugely outweigh the time taken to fulfil this role. It’s incredibly rewarding, great fun and an opportunity to be part of a fantastic team”.

Anyone interested in befriending, and meeting other volunteers, is invited to join the Evergreen team for a complimentary tea, coffee or soft drink, every first Thursday of the month, between 6pm and 7pm, at the Cosy Club, Stamford. Alternatively, for an informal chat, call Yvette Powell 01780 765900.

Red Cross and Macmillan Cancer Support – How to Become a Volunteer SupporterA service run by the British Red Cross and Macmillan, which supports people living with cancer and their families to live in their own homes, has been described as ‘fantastic’ by one user. He added, “It gave me the encouragement and confidence to face life on my own.”

Since 2013, the service has been providing companionship and social visits for up to twelve weeks, but more support can be arranged for people receiving palliative care.

Fully trained staff and volunteers can carry out practical tasks, such as shopping and the collection of

prescriptions, or assistance with forms. They can also signpost people to other organisations for additional advice and ongoing support.

In addition, the service runs an outreach clinic at Wake House, North Street, Bourne, where people can chat and share their experiences of living with cancer, plus they can access a therapeutic hand, arm and shoulder massage, during their visit.

Thanks to funding from The Len Pick Trust and Bourne United Charites, the service will continue for the foreseeable future.

As a volunteer for the service,

you will have the rewarding experience of making a difference to the lives of people who need extra support, whilst learning new skills.

To find out more about the service, or how to become a volunteer, please contact us on 0345 054 7171.

Morton Street Fair in conjunction with Morton School Fayre (Sponsored by Morton Post Office, Halls Garage, Lincolnshire Bow & Cherryholt Mobility)

We are looking forward to the Street Fair this year. Do come along and join us on Saturday July 9th, (10am - 4pm) and enjoy everything that is on offer. There are lots of different things to see and do.The inception of the Street Fair was to celebrate the new millennium, to foster community spirit and enable local organisations to raise much-needed funds. Over the years, many thousands of pounds have been raised.

This year, the 2000+ Committee have been joined by Morton C. of E. Primary School, making the day bigger and better than ever. Since the first Street Fair in 2000, it has gone from strength to strength and is still very popular. However, there is

a potential problem inasmuch as some of the committee, organisers and helpers have reached “retirement” age. More willing workers are needed if it is to continue. If you are willing and able to help, now or in the future, in any way, and not just on the committee, please contact Brenda 01778 570317, Richard 570370, or to book a stall, contact Pete 570506 (for the Street) or Morton School 570389 for stalls on the school site.Find us on Facebook

The Wellhead Practice Welcomes Duncan Ford, AcupuncturistMy name is Duncan Ford BA (Hons), Lic.ac, MBAcC Cert KHT. I am an acupuncturist, and I recently joined the Wellhead Practice, here in Bourne as part of the complementary healthcare team. I am a local practitioner, with practices in Stamford and Spalding.

I obtained my First Class Honours degree in Traditional Acupuncture at CTA in Hatton, which was the oldest college of acupuncture in Europe. I have full membership with the British Acupuncture Council, the leading regulatory body for the practice of acupuncture in the UK.

I am married with two daughters and, outside of work, (when I have spare time that is) I am mainly being a dad and a husband, but I also enjoy yoga, martial arts and gardening.

My first contact with acupuncture was through the world of Chinese martial arts, in particular Taijiquan and Qigong, of which I have been a student for the last seventeen years. I feel my interest in this internal martial art has led me to understand the fundamental building blocks that underpin the foundations of traditional Chinese medicine.

I am fully committed to the practice of acupuncture and continuously work to develop myself professionally, so as to be able to provide the best possible care for my patients.

I regularly attend postgraduate courses to further develop myself as a practitioner and to deepen my understanding of this living tradition. I have also trained in many different styles of Traditional Acupuncture including Five Element, TCM, Tungs family lineage, Tans balance method, Japanese Acupuncture and Korean Hand Therapy.

Acupuncture may be able to help a wide range of conditions. If you have considered acupuncture treatment, or would just like to know if it could help a particular condition, then please contact the practice and I would be happy to discuss this with you in more detail.

He said he worries about everything, and described his life as one big bout of anxiety. He worries over the mortgage, being a good father and husband, having an accident or becoming ill. He becomes anxious that his anxiety will affect his job, relationships and his health. He explained that he has suffered a couple of panic attacks.

He feels he’s become anxious about being anxious, saying that it’s like being on a roundabout that you can’t get off.

We discussed a variety of strategies, selecting the ones that work best for him, and gradually building up a ‘mental tool kit’. Here are some that you might like to try yourself.

| Your Health advice from Caroline Mentzel, Behaviour Management Consultant

Don’t worry – Be happyRecently, I had a phone call from a gentleman who described himself as a ‘worrier’.

Write down all the things that cause you anxiety, in order of importance. Then write some possible solutions. You may be surprised how simple and achievable some of these solutions are. Think about your lifestyle. What changes could you make to reduce the pressure you feel you are under.

Here are some easy and effective feel-good strategies:

Lists are brilliant. Keep a running list of all the things you need to do, for example, post a letter, make a phone call etc. When it’s done, cross it off. Add new items as they arise. At the end of each day, look at the crossed-off items and feel good about what you have achieved. This will take the pressure off you to remember things.

Talk to yourself about success and prosperity, and what you want to achieve.

Find the positives of daily life; the funny, quirky side of things, and reasons to smile every day.

Make choices. Choose the positive aspect of whatever you do. Walk on the sunny side of the street; notice a patch of blue sky amongst the clouds; the flowers blooming, birds singing. Take pleasure from your surroundings.

Get to know yourself; what is right for you; what makes you feel good; what you do best; your good qualities.

Don’t be afraid to like and admire yourself. Be proud of yourself; recognise your achievements.

Great expectations. We receive more of what we expect; so expect things to work out well. If you expect the worst, don’t be surprised if things go wrong.

Every morning, when you wake, repeat to yourself - ‘Today’s a great day; I feel happy, healthy and successful’.

These are general suggestions. Specific targeted strategies are most effective, but these are tailored to individual requirements.

Children’s anxieties and emotional wellbeingdid you know…? Children’s anxieties are their biggest barriers to learning. as adults, we perhaps do not realize that our children can suffer from anxiety, stress and depression, just as we do. We take for granted that children do not understand what real stress is, and so the adult’s opinion is … “It’s just trivial because it’s not like they have to work, pay bills, have lots of responsibilities etc… They can get over it”. Childhood mental health issues can stay with you and then take you through to adulthood. If your child is suffering from anxiety, stress or depression, then the effects of these could be:

You can’t change a negative past, but you can make a positive future!

About me: I am a fully certified and qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist/Psychotherapist, based in Market Deeping, and I specialize in children’s anxieties and emotional wellbeing. For the last twenty years, I have worked in mainstream primary and secondary schools and “Pupil Referral Units”, and have integrated children from SEN schools into mainstream school. I have just resigned from my position as a HLTA/ SENCo in a secure children’s home for young people with mental health issues. I now work freelance in

different schools for three days a week, supporting children by using therapeutic techniques, strategies and resources to overcome their barriers to learning (specializing in anxieties).

On the other two days, I am concentrating on the private sector, using hypnotherapy/psychotherapy techniques to help children cope better in all areas of life and emotional wellbeing. I am trained in “solution focused” techniques and the best techniques in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Through my “continuing professional development” training and experience, I understand how the brain works, and what we can do about it to get results.

Bourne’s Invictus Games (2014) archery gold-medalist, Carl Harding has sadly lost his battle to get fit enough to become part of Great Britain’s team for the forthcoming Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, later this summer. Despite being one of the final six archers for selection, Carl has had to accept gracefully the fact that his serious shoulder ligament injury will rule him out this time.

For several months, Carl has been working incredibly hard on his fitness, under the auspices of Bourne-based, Keith Reed at his “Hands-On Massage” surgery, and alongside physiotherapist, Maria Cox, at her Thurlby practice. The intensive, deep-tissue massage programme, administered by Keith, was giving Carl some hope, but despite their every effort, both Carl and Keith are now accepting that this type of shoulder injury will require much more time to heal than is available. To his immense credit, though, wheelchair-user, Carl remains upbeat, recognising that Tokyo 2020 will be a target worth fighting for, with many international competitions to attend along the way. “At least I can now start learning to speak Japanese”, he quipped.

(Good luck Carl, with the recovery, and keep up the good work, Keith and Maria – Ed.)

Slimming World Consultant, Jo Bradford, has proved she’s “weight-loss royalty”, after winning a Sapphire Award for her work in helping people in the area to slim down and

improve their health.

The Award was created in 2014 to celebrate Slimming World’s forty-fifth anniversary. Jo, who runs the Bourne Slimming World group at the Darby and Joan Hall every Monday and has lost three stones with Slimming World herself, was thrilled to receive the award for inspiring dozens of people in the local community to slim. As a result of her success, she is now to open a new group at the Darby and Joan Hall, every Tuesday morning at 9.30am.

Jo says, “More than two-thirds of the adult population are overweight and that includes Bourne too. Some are so seriously overweight that they’re putting their health at risk and, sadly, lots of children are struggling with their weight too”.

“Lots of people want to lose weight but they don’t know how. When members come to my group, they tell me that they’ve tried to lose weight before and it hasn’t worked, so they feel like failures. Of course we are not failures; we just need the right guidance and support, and that is what I try to give to my members. This, along with our Food Optimising eating plan, sees them losing their weight beautifully. We encourage slimmers to make small, easy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, so

that they make healthier choices and lose weight, without having to feel hungry or deprived. As a result, the members of my group have lost a staggering 180 stones in the first five months of 2016.”

She adds, “I’m so proud to have achieved this Award and so proud of my members for their amazing weight losses. I am really looking forward to starting my new Tuesday morning group on June 7th , and to helping even more people to become healthier and happier”.

“Ever since our feature, last month, on Bourne’s Nags Head and the arrival there of a new Head Chef, Leighton O’Callaghan, I have been hearing many glowing reports of what is now available in our town. It was with a sense of heightened expectation, therefore, that I took my family along recently, just to measure the extent to which the Nags Head has moved on. Believe me, from the moment we arrived and were made to feel so welcome, through the truly scrumptious meals we all enjoyed, to the realisation that such quality food, preparation and service hadn’t cost us the earth, we were absolutely delighted”.

“Flaming June” is upon us already and although we perceive it to be a warm summer month, in my experience we have had some pretty wet Junes and they have not lived up to our

expectations. However, as we approach midsummer there are more hours of daylight (more time for you to spend in the allotment!), the temperatures should be rising and you would be very unlucky to suffer a frost as late as this. June is one of the busiest months of the year for the vegetable gardener: there are crops to plant, sow, and harvest, weeding, watering, feeding, getting rid of pests – the list seems never-ending. You really do need to keep on top of all these jobs to get the best out of your plot. Did you know that in every square metre of soil there can be as many as 100,000 weeds? Yes I’m sure you do!! No wonder there is a relentless battle going on between gardener and weeds. Do keep them at bay as they use water and nutrients that your crops need and shade them from the light. As the month progresses thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity as this month offers the last opportunity to sow many seeds. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. Once you are sure that frosts are over you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes. Brussels sprouts and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted. It is also your last opportunity for sowing runner beans and main crop carrots. Sweetcorn can be planted out and as it is self-pollinating it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction. Traditionally Florence fennel is sown after the longest day, 21st June, as it is less likely to bolt: sowing in succession is a good idea. don’t forget:-• Feed peppers, aubergines and tomatoes with a dilute high-potash feed every week or two to encourage flower growth and ultimately good sized fruits. • Net brassicas to deter pigeons. • Net carrots with insect proof netting to stop carrot fly• Spread mulches to deter weed growth and retain moisture in the soil.• Earth up potatoes• Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen.

Happy gardening!

safe local Trades supporting the work of age UK locallyIt’s daunting enough having to make contact with a tradesman, let alone trust a stranger, to enter your home and carry out maintenance work or repairs. Imagine being elderly, vulnerable and in some cases, living alone, and having to make that decision? That is why Safe Local Trades is delighted to support the work of Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. We admire the charity’s hard work and all it does for the local community – which of course could be a friend or relative reading this.Over the past seven years, Safe Local Trades has raised over £33,000 for the cause, through the personal efforts of SLT director Eileen Le Voi, trade members, family and friends. One of the most recent events was the hugely successful Insane Terrain challenge, which, to date, has raised around £2,075. Helping to achieve that great total were Hampton brother and sister, Sarah Copland and Simon Gooch – who have raised £686 in memory of their dad, John.Sarah said: “Thanks to everyone who has donated so far. We wanted to raise funds for Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, in memory of our cherished and hugely missed dad, John Gooch, who supported several charities including this one. Age comes to us all eventually and, for some, can be a challenge in itself.“It was great for us to get involved in this fantastic event, through the support of Safe Local Trades.” Would you like to join Simon, Sarah and do your bit to add to the £33,000 already raised by Safe Local Trades for the charity? Well, getting involved is just a couple of clicks away. There is still time to sign up for a 13,000 ft tandem sky dive at Sibson Airfield – which takes place on Saturday July 9th.And, if you raise £300 for charity, you will be “on cloud nine”, at receiving a free sky dive. Why not make it a team-building event and get your friends or work colleagues involved?Or, if you prefer your feet on terra firma, why not sign up for the Perkins Great Eastern Run half marathon (or fun run) on Sunday October 9th and fulfil a personal goal, as well as rise to a fundraising challenge? For details, call 01733 564285 or visit http://www.safelocaltrades.com/about/age-uk/fundraising-2016

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea | June 20168

No sooner has Her Majesty the Queen fi nished sending her thank-you letters, after having celebrated her ninetieth birthday on April 21st, than the nation is now bracing itself for her “offi cial birthday”, this year on Saturday June 11th, (one day after The Duke of Edinburgh’s 95th birthday – his ‘real’, and only, one!) So why should the dear old lady be getting two lots of presents, cake and cards, when some of us, (especially us Capricorns with our birthday within a day or two of Christmas) have sometimes struggled to get remembered at all? (Cue… violins!)

It is a tradition that was started by King George II in 1748, and one which owes its origins to the ageless problem of the British weather. George was born in November, and felt the weather would be too cold at that time of year for his annual birthday parade. So instead, he combined his

birthday celebration with an annual spring military parade, known as ‘Trooping the Colour’, in which regiments displayed their fl ags or ‘colours’ so soldiers would be familiar with them. This, it was hoped, would benefi t from taking place in brilliant, early summer sunshine.

The tradition has continued to this day. All British sovereigns have been given the option of having an ‘offi cial’ birthday and, because the Queen's ‘real’ birthday is on April 21st, she has stuck with the tradition of celebrating hers in June. During the early part of her reign, her offi cial birthday was on a Thursday, but, after seven years, it was changed to a Saturday, so that more members of the public could enjoy it.

So the real reason why Her Majesty has two birthdays? Our unpredictable British weather and tourism!

So Why Does

The QueenHave Two Birthdays?

FIND YOUR VOICE – (An appeal for new tutors)Cathy Mellor, who founded FIND YOUR VOICE, has a passion for enabling children to communicate and present with confidence. She has extensive experience in coaching and teaching speech and communication skills. The reasons she developed FIND YOUR VOICE were to enable everyone to embrace and celebrate their own personal qualities, communicate confidently and present to an audience.

The classes are held in, and after, school and are fun-packed sessions of wordplay, team games, conversation, drama, poetry and performance. Class sizes are small, so each child can receive individual support. There is no casting, uniform or costume - children appear as themselves, and make their own journey to success. Each summer, children have the option of gaining a certificate, recognising their newly acquired skills, from LAMDA - The London Academy of Dramatic Art, and are able to take great pride in what they have achieved at the annual FYV Award Ceremony.

Recently, FIND YOUR VOICE was named as “South Kesteven

Business Pioneer 2016”, classes have flourished and are consistently over-subscribed. The programme, which was pioneered at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy, is now also offered to students joining Bourne Grammar School. There is enormous interest from other schools wishing to offer FIND YOUR VOICE classes, and so Cathy is now looking to recruit tutors to join a team to inspire children across the region.

Do you have a teaching or training qualification, and a passion for inspiring children, aged from six years through to “Sixth Form”?

Would it appeal to you to work part-time, after school and during term time, and to take responsibility for your professional

excellence and relationships with partner schools, children and parents?

FIND YOUR VOICE partners schools in delivering very high quality, fun tuition for all children in communication, public speaking and presentation skills.

In Cathy’s words, “We form supportive, effective, professional relationships with our partner schools to deliver classes after school in this life-changing skill. We also offer nationally recognised, LAMDA qualifications in Communication Skills to our students. If you think you could inspire children to find their voice and believe in themselves, please e-mail Cathy Mellor, at [email protected] for details of how to apply.

Bourne Salvation Army – A Serious Plea for VolunteersCaptains Kevin and Wendy Brown of Bourne’s Salvation Army are hoping that the recently televised series, “The Sally Army and Me”, featuring Paul O’Grady, will act as the catalyst, in encouraging the wonderful, kind folk of Bourne and district to step in and avert a potential crisis.

The astonishing successes of the community furniture store on South Street, the charity shop on West Street and the weekly Thursday Luncheon Club are all at risk, unless several new volunteers are willing to become involved. A new cook and kitchen assistants for instance, would ensure that the Luncheon Club wouldn’t have to face closure, and the forty regulars lose such a valuable asset. Shop and store helpers, along with a van driver would all be welcomed with open arms.

Please contact Captain Wendy Brown on 01778 393459, for further details.

They were the winners of our Easter Egg Hunt, in April’s edition. Our congratulations go to them and, as ever, our thanks go to the businesses and shops that took part in the competition.

Celebrating 40 years of Primary Education

Happyth

Birthday40

Birthdays come and go, and I’m sure that some of us would try to forget about our fortieth birthday, but here at Bourne Westfield we are really excited to be

celebrating this significant milestone. This year, we are forty years young and the finale of our celebrations will be a summer birthday party on Friday July 15th, 2016.

pull out & keep

Page 40: Discovering Bourne issue 058, June 2016

Since 1975, the school has, amazingly, only had three headteachers: Mrs Woollard, Mr Bright and now Mrs Radley. This is testament to the family atmosphere and exciting learning environment

which continues to evolve. Many staff members, and those close to the school, continue to be involved after years of support. Mrs Northen

was the school’s first ‘lollipop lady’, and she still continues to support the school as one of our

valued “reading buddies”. Many of our current parents were pupils in the early years of the school,

and it is lovely to see generations of families coming through the school.

The school was founded in 1975, to provide education for 210 pupils in a flat-roofed, seven

classroom school, with no field. For P.E. lessons, the children would use Mr Freear’s garden. Both of his children attended the school and Mr Freear himself is currently a long-standing governor of the school.

Current pupils don’t have such a trek for their P.E. lessons or play times, as they now enjoy the

extensive grounds, adjacent to the ever-expanding school buildings.

Over the last forty years, education has changed, but Westfield has always embraced the opportunities that its lovely grounds offer for

exciting and inspirational learning. The school has seen the creation of three different ponds, each bigger and better than the last. Our current pond

and environmental area was created in 2004 and, to this day, our children love exploring the different plants and animals which inhabit this magical area.

Page 41: Discovering Bourne issue 058, June 2016

As an agricultural county, we feel it is important for the children of Westfield to understand how their food is produced. To this end, each year has its

own raised bed, and we have an annual planting and harvest. One of the children’s favourite

additions to the school has been our very own chickens which everybody enjoys looking after and collecting the eggs. Eggs, together with our

home-grown produce, are sold at our market stall, early in the Autumn Term.

Over the last two years, the children have been most excited by the introduction of Forest School. This has seen them digging a fire pit and cooking

outside, building shelters, Norman Castles and Egyptian Shadufs, to name but a few of their thrilling

adventures.

We have gone from strength to strength since 1975, and now have 637 pupils on role. This

has meant that, over the years, the school has been significantly extended and improved. All

classrooms are now in permanent buildings, and this year will see the addition of yet another classroom and a dedicated music room. The old style external courtyard has been covered and

now houses an extensive library and the school’s Mezzo, which was opened by Warwick Davis in

2014. The school never stands still, as we are always responding to the

needs of Bourne. In September this year, we are excited to be taking

on Bluebird Nursery and welcoming our first cohort of ‘Little Westys’.

Music has become a long standing tradition at the school under the leadership of our Arts

Director, Mrs Beavis. The many bands and choirs will be in full swing, as we launch into our Fortieth Birthday Party on July 15th. The children will also be testing out their design skills in a competition to design a Fortieth Birthday cake. The winning

entry will then be baked by the academy kitchen and ceremoniously cut at the party. The official celebration will include lots of games and stalls,

plus a packed programme of performances from our school dancers, performance poets and

musicians.

The fortieth birthday will also provide the theme for our annual arts week, and we will be creating a

large mural at one of the entrances to the school to celebrate Bourne Westfield Primary Academy and

all of its connections in the local community.

Bourne Westfield Primary Academy is an amazing place to work and to be a student. Igniting a

passion for learning is something that we try to achieve every day. Our children are fantastic in so many ways, and visitors to the school always

comment on their strong work ethic and desire to achieve their best. This is borne out in their

tremendous academic achievements, as well as an impressive collection of sporting and musical

accolades. This year alone, Westfield has won the County Football Championships, reached the finals

of the County Indoor Athletics, won the Regional cross country competition and are the South East

Lincolnshire Hockey Champions. All children get the opportunity to play a musical instrument

and be part of one of the school choirs, whilst our youngest children always tug at the heart strings, when they perform at the Annual Rotary Young

Musician competition.

We will be establishing a ‘Photo Gallery’ page on our website where you will be able to view a wide range of images, both past and present, showing

the development of the school through the last forty years.

Happy Birthday Westfield!

| Clubs

The Inner Wheel Club of Bourne was founded twenty-five years ago and is part of the worldwide women’s organisation which has over 100,000 members and was itself founded in Manchester ninety-two years ago.

Inner Wheel members serve their local community and some overseas concerns. This is blended with forming firm friendships with each other and with the people who they serve.

Bourne members are proud to say that they have done this voluntary work in many different ways over the years.

There have been hands-on activities, like making or collecting items which are needed by people in difficult circumstances. Fundraising events have given some financial assistance to local organisations which provide support in Bourne and the local district.

We have assisted the young and the elderly, those with physical or mental problems, and we have taken particular interest in helping the lonely or those members of the public who are full-time carers in the community.

We have provided teas for people in the social groups in town, encouraged gardening in the young, planted bowls of bulbs to cheer the lonely, helped residents in homes in flower arranging and many other actions which have put a smile on the face of the recipient.

We collect items all the time for the Food Bank and the Women’s Refuge. We take a great interest in collecting goods for the very poor or disadvantaged in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia regularly, besides rising to the occasion, whenever there’s a disaster in any part of the world.

We have had to adapt our activities and support, as the requirements of society have changed, but this has only added to the enjoyment of our work. We are always open to new ideas for fun events and new ways in which we can help. We love to meet the people we support and try to keep actively interested in the effects of our work.

We meet socially once a month for a meal and often have a speaker or

demonstration afterwards. We look forward to maintaining our own friendships, which bring a lot of fun into our service activities.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Bourne, Morton, Dyke, Haconby, Kirkby Underwood, Thurlby and Northorpe areas and manager Mark Sherwood

I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

One thing many of us more experienced computer users take for granted is the use of a mouse and its associated buttons and wheel. However, I often teach complete beginners how to use a computer, usually elderly clients, who often have hand or wrist mobility limitations and it can be extremely difficult for them to manipulate their system using the standard mouse actions.

Two areas that are of significant impact are the double click to open programs and the tracking of the mouse pointer around the screen, especially if the movement is very sensitive. Fortunately, these settings can be adjusted.

Click in your search bar and type ‘mouse’ and you should see the option to change your mouse settings. If not then you can also find this in your control panel settings.

In the settings I would highly recommend focussing on the Double Click speed, which controls the length of time you have to double click an icon to open a program, and the Pointer Speed which is located on the Pointer Options tab.

Here you will also find a number of other tweaks and settings related to using the mouse;

switching the buttons (for lefties), adjusting the scroll speed of the wheel, turning on shadows and ‘trails’ so that it is easier to follow the pointer as it moves and even selecting themes to change how the pointer looks.

If you find mouse control tricky, or you have a family member that struggles with it, then it is worth spending fifteen minutes or so in these settings, changing the options until they match the skills and dexterity of the user.

As with most things, practice makes perfect. To help develop mouse skills SeniorNet.org have uploaded a set of simple online exercises that allow you to practise mouse control. You can find these at the following link http://bit.ly/1SHN8wd or on the web site http://seniornet.org/

In some cases, especially as we get more senior in years, our hands can suffer stiffness and arthritis. Some of my customers find it very difficult to use a mouse so instead I have introduced them to a trackball (see image).

The trackball works in a similar manner to a mouse but, instead of having to move the unit around a flat surface, you can control mouse movement by using your fingers or palm of your hand to roll the ball around, moving the mouse pointer on the screen accordingly. This can be a great help to those with hand mobility issues. Trackballs start at around £20 and upwards but there is no real need to pay more than £40 unless you need a high precision version.

Words from the Mayor

The time has come (“the walrus said …”) to thank so many people who have contributed so much to our mayoral year. I will not try to mention every name, because a) there are too many to mention, b) I would inevitably omit some key names, and c) I don’t even know the names of some of our marvellous helpers.

I will, however, mention some groups of people and then list the commercial and retail outlets who have offered support to my charities.

Not in any special order, thank you to …. the ladies and gentlemen who assist at the Church Hall; the staff at the Corn Exchange; the staff in the Town Council Office; Dementia Support, South Lincs; my neighbours in Linden Rise; the landlords, staff and punters at my six pubs who have played in my “Pub Challenge” (names below); members of the Royal British Legion; my fellow Councillors, many of whom have turned up to, or organised, events on my behalf; fellow civic dignitaries; and last, but certainly not least, my friends and family.

Our thanks to all the commercial undertakings and retailers who have generously supported our fund-raising activities during 2015/16.

Words from the Mayor Six top tips for

first-time buyerslocationOne of the most important things to consider as a first-time buyer is location. If you don’t know your locations well, it might be advisable to rent for three to six months. You can change a lot of things about a home, but location is not one of them!

schoolsIf you are a first-time buyer, you must take schools into consideration, even if you don’t have any children yourself. Homes in a good school catchment areas appreciate faster and the resale value is more likely to be maintained, making it an easy sale when you become a first-time home seller.

CommuteWhere you work should be a factor in where you buy a home, as most people don’t want a long commute

to work. If possible, buy a property near to a lot of “economic opportunity”. This will also impact on the resale value.

Finances/BudgetBeing a first-time buyer, don’t fall into the trap of buying a house that will over-extend you financially. This is one of the reasons that homes get repossessed. There are a lot of other costs that come with home ownership that you may not be aware of. You don’t want to “max out” your spending, if you enjoy other things like travelling, shopping, eating out etc.

long-term planAs a first-time home buyer, you should have a long-term plan for your investment. If you are going to spend thousands of pounds on a property, what is your plan for that investment?

Your purchase may be a starter home that turns into a rental income property, or maybe you plan to live in the house for the rest of your life. Either way, you need to have a plan, prior to purchase and remember, your long-term plan can always change, so keep yourself flexible.

Funding your purchase It is always a good idea to find out how much you can borrow, before you start looking for the perfect first home. Newton Fallowell works with Mortgage Advice Bureau, who are completely independent. They have access to hundreds of different mortgage providers, offering some of the best rates, not always found on the high street. They offer a free thirty minute consultation, in the Newton Fallowell offices.

| Golf tip by Darren Game, PGA Professional, Bourne Golf Studio

How to cure the slice spinClub face control will help stop you putting slicing spin on the ball. If the face of the club stays pointing to the target after impact, then you are likely to put slice spin on the ball. A quick thought and drill to help prevent this from happening is to train the elbow of the leading arm to point down, and the palm of the leading hand point upwards soon after impact. (The leading hand being the left for a righthanded golfer.)

If you take a golf club now and make a few small swings and ensure the “elbow down-palm up” scenario, you will notice how the face of the club starts pointing away from the target soon after impact (left of target for a right-handed golfer), thus meaning the ball will not have slice spin on it. Please note - there is always an underlying fault that causes a sliced shot. This drill is designed to show you how to release the club through impact correctly, thus reducing any spin imparted on the ball. If you have a slice shot that you want to remove from your game, then you really need to come for a lesson and see why you slice your shots. If you would like a tip about a specific

area of your own game, then you could send me it, with a picture or short video clip if you like, to twitter @BOURNEGolf and I will reply to you with your tip or drill.

I hope this tip helps you to improve your game. Golf lessons are available in Bourne Golf Studio to help you improve and enjoy your golf more. You can make arrangements by calling me by telephone 01778 395992, text 07827 293679 or email darren@ bournegolfstudio.com

With us....it ’s personal

1. Cape Town, South Africa With a world class dining scene and a strong pound, South Africa is an exotic and affordable destination. Not only will you discover some of the world’s tastiest food, but you can also sample some of the finest wines on a tour of the expansive winelands which surround the city. You’ll find dishes influenced by the indigenous population, the Dutch, French, Indians and Malaysians in a range of vibrant cuisine that’s guaranteed to leave you wanting more.

My Top Pick: Biltong is a thinly sliced, air dried meat snack, usually made from beef or game such as springbok. It is cured in a mixture of vinegar, salt, sugars and spices and goes great with an ice cold beer.

2. Morocco Morocco’s diverse and distinctive cuisine embraces meaty tagines, light,

fluffy couscous, sweet, honey-coated pastries and deliciously refreshing mint teas. These complex and intriguing flavours are a winning combination, which can be sampled throughout Morocco, whether you’re trekking in the Atlas Mountains or enjoying a weekend city break.

My Top Pick: Tagine: Named after the conical clay cooking pot in which it is cooked, tagines are a delicious stew of tender meat and local vegetables, sometimes with the addition of olives or preserved fruit, and always served with fresh bread for mopping up all those tasty juices.

3. Japan One of the healthiest in the world, Japanese cuisine combines the delicate flavours of raw vegetables with rice, raw fish and the piquant flavours of wasabi, ginger and soy. Japanese cuisine boasts

a large variety of dishes and regional specialities, including sushi, tempura, tofu, rice, ramen, curry and pickles.

My Top Pick: Sushi is the most famous Japanese dish outside of Japan and no trip would be complete without sampling the delicious range of fresh sushi and sashimi, right where it all began.

That wraps up my top destinations for foodies. So, if all this talk of food has got your taste-buds tingling, then call me today to discuss your next tailor-made foodie break and discover some fantastic deals to these destinations.

“Buy to Let” surge, but be warned!More and more people are looking to access their pension in order to purchase a rental property, since the pension freedoms were introduced in April 2015.

However, we at Landmark would caution anyone considering property as a retirement investment to take into account the following facts:

• Significant costs involved, including tax on capital gains and income, as well as insurance, maintenance and repairs.

• An additional increase in Stamp Duty to 3% for people with more than one house from April 1st 2016.

• The government’s reform to tax relief on rental income, whereby property expenses will no longer qualify for tax relief at the higher rate.

• In addition, people often neglect to allow for “voids”

(periods where there is no tenant) or refurbishment costs between tenants. In an ideal world, we would all have a good tenant that looks after our house and pays rent every month for at least ten years; in reality, very often the quality of the tenancy agreement is related to the type of property.

• It is often worth spending extra up-front to buy, say, a three bedroom semi-detached house in a reasonable area, rather than a one bedroom flat in a more downmarket area. It is true that the yield of rental income over purchase price looks more attractive on the smaller property, but it is far more likely that your tenant will be single or a couple, and perhaps more mobile than the family that rents your three bed semi; therefore your changes of tenant will almost certainly be more often. Bear in mind that an agent will charge upwards of £500 to find you a new tenant, the property may well be empty for at least one month, and there is almost certainly some refurbishment required, even if it is only a deep

clean (and you will have just spent the equivalent of two to three months’ rent).

This generation has seen house prices rise drastically over the long-term, so it is clear to see why people are so confident investing in rental properties. It is very easy to get swept along with the belief that property is the ultimate investment.

BUT – if you are withdrawing money from your pension to fund your purchase, there could be a hefty tax bill to pay. Furthermore, the pension company will probably tax your withdrawal at an emergency rate, which must then be reclaimed. This could take weeks or even months. Add in initial fees, such as solicitors’ fees and stamp duty, and the property must show a significant rise in value, even to get you back to square one.

Quite simply, as with all things, “never put all of your eggs into one basket”. By all means, buy property – but only as a part of a balanced investment portfolio and, as we always say, consult an INDEPENDENT Financial Adviser before committing to anything.

“THE WolF THAT lIVES WITH uS”

Unfortunately, there has also been an increase in the number of dog attacks on sheep in recent years. This has terrible consequences for both the sheep and, possibly, the dogs and owners. I had first-hand experience of this several years ago. I was called out by the RSPCA to a long, thin field, along the edge of the River Glen near Spalding. When I entered the field, I could see a group of sheep huddled together right at one end. As I began to walk along the field, I could see bodies of sheep littered around the field. There were also many bodies floating in the river where sheep had jumped in to escape, but had drowned due to their heavy fleeces. The injuries were severe. Some of these poor creatures were still alive and had to be put to sleep. One I particularly remember was a lamb with half its face missing. As I came to the far end of the field, I found two dogs laying, resting on the ground. They were pleased to see me and happily

For more information, please contact the surgery on 01778 422863.

Lambing time is now coming to an end .It is lovely to see them in the fields around us. It’s always an uplifting sight and part of the joy of spring.

allowed me to attach them to a lead. As far as they were concerned, they had had a great time. It is not the dog’s fault when these situations occur. We must always remember that there is a bit of wolf in all our dogs. It should come as no surprise that most of our much-loved and friendly pets would chase sheep and even attack them, if given the chance. It goes without saying that dogs must be kept under control near sheep. However, many of these attacks are carried out by dogs that have escaped from their gardens, while their owners are out. It is very important that your dogs must be kept in a secure environment. Farmers are allowed to shoot dogs who are worrying sheep. Also, if a dog is seen attacking sheep, the owner will be eligible for a fine of up to £2,000, and the dog will be taken away and put to sleep.THIS IS NOT THE DOG’S FAULT. The dog is only following an instinct. Many people do not believe that their dogs are capable of such a thing, but many of them are. It is up to us, as owners, to take care and protect our pets from these situations. It does not just apply to sheep. Over the years, I have seen distraught owners when their much-loved dog has attacked chickens or pet rabbits or killed a muntjac deer, while running in the woods. We have also heard of those horrible cases where babies are attacked. All these things are our responsibility and we must understand “the wolf that lives with us”.

| In the Hot Seat

This month, the Bourne Inner Wheel celebrates twenty-five years in the town – appropriate therefore, that this month’s “Hot Seat” incumbent should be a past

National President of this esteemed association, who happens to be our local, much-respected, retired G.P, Dr. Sheila Halliday-Pegg.

Her early years were spent in Oldham and North Wales, before studying medicine at Liverpool University, (as one of only ten women in a class of over one hundred), and moving into General Practice. Husband, Geoff’s civil engineering travels, saw Sheila’s experiences widen, and they settled in this area, where Sheila was to spend twenty-five years at “The Bourne Practice”, (now “The Galletly Practice” on North Road). “I saw a whole generation go through our hands,” she explains, “so I felt that I really did know the people and I still think of them as my extended family.” After retirement from there, she worked for a further twelve years for R.A.F. Cranwell and for the Ministry of Work and Pensions.

In her twenty-five years as a member of Inner Wheel, Sheila has performed many roles, including National President in 2012-13 – (“exhausting yet thrilling”). She has particularly enjoyed her two visits to Bangladesh, to assist with the floating River Boat hospital. For fourteen years, Sheila has also been a member of Stamford U3A, and can even find time to run her own health group! Oh yes, and there’s also Co-ordinator of the local Neighbourhood Watch, all forms of embroidery, stitchwork and tapestry, gardening and singing. (“Retired? – not me!”)

“The real love of my life, though, is the family, (two sons and a daughter, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren) and I happily childmind whenever I can. It is quite tricky keeping up with them physically, but I do like the challenge of keeping up with their computing and phone skills. I do surprise them sometimes!”

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FAvOURITE MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?A: I am a proud “Lancashire Lass”, having been born

in Oldham, whilst there were still mines and cotton mills there. I lived with my grandmother for nine years and she mothered everyone around her. I loved shopping for the neighbours or taking them the goodies which my gran had cooked for them. There was always music around, because everybody sang in the family.

WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?A: My father, who supported me in all my challenges, many of which he would have liked to have done himself. When I faced difficulties and considered giving up any particular goal, I thought of his sacrifices for me and his determination, and carried on.

Sheila halliday-Pegg “Retired” G.P. (but busier than ever!)

Q: WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, ALIvE OR NOT, WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY?A: I have long had a soft spot for David Coulthard, and he has nurtured my interest in Formula 1 racing. I haven’t managed to find out what he likes to eat yet!

Having spent some years in Liverpool, in the Beatles era, I fell in love with Merseysiders. Consequently, I would like to share a meal with John Bishop. Anyone who can see laughter in all sides of everyday life, enhanced by the Scouse accent, is bound to provide me with guffawing indigestion!

Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONLY FIvE WORDS?A: Dependable, Caring, Determined, Family-oriented and Arian.

Q: IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT BOURNE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?A: I would bring the market back on to the streets and make it three times as big. It would bring the life of Bourne and district into the open, and we need to be proud of what is achieved here, and enjoy a good chat and laugh with each other.

Q: WHAT ADvICE WOULD YOU GIvE TO A “SIxTEEN-YEAR-OLD YOU”?A: Life is a maze. Get lost in it and take up the challenges which occur in any path you meet. Above all, enjoy it by getting fully involved. ”

sergeant mosley’s musings Drones and How to Stay Within the LawUnmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), more commonly known as drones, are rapidly increasing in popularity and capability. Along with that has come an increase in reports of drones flying dangerously, or in contravention of air-safety legislation. This may be due in part to those who fly drones not being aware of the law surrounding their use and, while this is not an excuse, I thought it would be useful to dedicate this month’s column to raise public awareness of using them safely and legally.

The ownership and use of a UAV is not illegal in itself. However, if used in the wrong environment, they could be illegal and they can be used to commit more ‘traditional’ offences such as assault, damage, harassment or voyeurism.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Tom Ingram is the owner of BIg TOm driving school who provide Five day Intensive driving Courses in Bourne, grantham, lincoln, Peterborough,

stamford, spalding and Boston (0800 689 4174)

Welcome to the motoring section, and what a welcome change this beautiful sunshine provides! It certainly makes driving around Bourne and Deeping so much more enjoyable.

It has recently been announced that Halfords have given notice to the DVSA that they do not want any more driving tests to be undertaken in their stores from July 2016. For those who were

not aware, Halfords had agreed to allow driving tests to be undertaken at a select few sites, on a trial basis initially, and as this had evolved to a two year period, I was rather hoping that it would be extended so that learner drivers in Stamford and Spalding could take local driving tests in the near future. Unfortunately, it appears there was not enough commercial value to the store for allowing driving tests to take place in five of their stores across the UK.

The DVSA, in response, have stated that “alternative arrangements” will be made. Time will tell if those arrangements are intended only for the five locations or not. As it stands, learners in Bourne, Spalding, Stamford and nearby villages have a thirty minute journey to their nearest driving test centres.

What’s your view on this? Do you think that the DVSA should be providing options to allow learner drivers to take driving tests nearer to their home than at the end of a thirty minute journey? I would be keen to hear your views, so please e-mail me on [email protected]

No more Driving Tests at Halfords

Take one very enthusiastic car lover, add a B.Sc. in Chemistry and a M.Sc. in I.T., and then combine with nineteen years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Change the career path, by adopting a business franchise for seven East Midlands counties, and there you have forty-four-year-old, Bourne resident, Adrian Charles.

The franchise is for “Engine Carbon Clean” and involves Adrian travelling to his customer’s vehicles and spending approximately 30-45 minutes removing the carbon residue from the engine and intake/exhaust components. If the success of the last twelve months is anything to go by, then Adrian is clearly on to a winner. He is combining a very sound product and process (his Facebook reviews are a revelation!), with a desire to help the customer get the utmost pleasure from their motor, all in a friendly and informative way, at a competitive price.

Adrian enthuses, “Every day is like a car show for me, as I’m helping preserve all kinds of vehicles and keeping them at their best.” The service can involve any engine that runs on petrol, diesel or even L.P.G. This includes cars, lorries, vans, bikes, tractors… the list goes on!

As Adrian explains there are many ways in which the unwanted accumulation of carbon within the internal combustion engine and associated components causes problems. Over time they develop increased vibration (and associated low level rumble and boom), throttle response drops

off and vehicles become sluggish, fuel efficiency also drops off and emissions increase. As things get worse issues develop such as sticking turbos, blocked EGRs and DPFs and eventually vehicles can go into a ‘limp mode’. Short start-stop journeys, low-RPM driving and poor quality fuel exacerbate the issue. Taxis and Buses are prime candidates and to this end, Adrian has regular contact with a number of fleets of taxis. Older and classic vehicles are catered for as well and Adrian is regularly servicing a collection of lovingly preserved, vintage motor cars at Bicester Heritage Centre.

Adrian relates it to a car wash, a very dirty vehicle will show a massive improvement after being cleaned; a brand new clean car would show no difference and there is a sliding scale in between. Adrian points out that that his service is all about getting back the performance and fuel consumption that you have already lost over time, not adding to, or improving it, like a modification would achieve. Essentially it is also about preventing future repair bills.

To restore your vehicle’s performance, reclaim your lost miles per gallon, quieten that engine rumble, and help stop those repair bills, then book in for an Engine Carbon Clean today. Prices start at £99 for one vehicle and, with multi-vehicle discounts, can be brought down to just £80 each.

Still, not convinced? Then cast your eyes over the following: https://www.facebook.com/F5ECC/reviews

Engine Carbon Clean – Restore your Vehicle’s Performance

Page 69: Discovering Bourne issue 058, June 2016

Why is carbon such a problem?• Over time carbon build-up affects performance, with reduced

fuel consumption, increased and smoky emissions, increased noise and vibration (rumble) and less throttle response

• As buildup increases issues develop such as sticking turbos, blocked EGRs and DPFs and eventually vehicles can go into a `limp mode’

Which vehicles suffer?• All vehicles will suffer as mileage increases

• Cars that are rarely, or never, driven hard can suffer too

• Diesels tend to suffer more issues with their additional exhaust components

What does the carbon clean involve?• Between 45-60 minutes of your time overall

• Attaching to the air intake system of the vehicle and feeding in a mixture of hydrogen and an excess of oxygen gas with the vehicle running for between 30-45 minutes

• Can be performed at your home or work with discounts for multi-vehicle bookings

D I S C O V E R I N G Bourne | June 201670

Before the Education Act of 1870, the building of elementary schools was left to voluntary bodies, principally churches, and an Anglican organisation known as the National Society for Education opened the National School on a site given to the town by the Marquess of Exeter, Lord of the Manor of Bourne.

The stone laying was held on the afternoon of Monday 5th October 1829 when the bells of the Abbey Church rang out as wine was spilled over the foundation stone and distributed to everyone present. A committee was formed to run the school as a charity and handle the finances which came from grants, donations and money-raising events such as annual balls at the Town Hall, grand society occasions with dancing all night and carriages at dawn which became the biggest source of income.

The school opened the following year and was soon running efficiently but it was to last for less than fifty years because it closed in the summer of 1877, having been replaced by the board or council school in Abbey Road, now the Abbey Primary Academy.

The building had various functions until the outbreak of the Great War in 1914 when it became part of the Red Cross hospital based at the Vestry Hall next door where soldiers were brought to convalesce after being wounded at the front, a role which continued until the armistice in 1918.

The building was then used for occasional educational purposes but became neglected due to lack of maintenance and the trustees of the Bourne National School [now Bourne National School Trust Fund] who were then responsible, decided to sell the property and the income from the capital is still used to help fund youth and church groups and selected individuals.

The old school building became a gymnasium for a time but when that venture foundered, it was sold in March 1987 to the Grantham and Stamford Conservative Association for use as their constituency headquarters which continues today although the original stone name plaque can still be seen on the front as a reminder of its original role.

Archive photograph of the school from 1998.

Many of our historic buildings pass unnoticed because they blend easily into the street scene or have no striking outward appearance to command attention although a little investigation can often prove worthwhile. So it is with No 62 North Street, now with a modern façade and used as offices but originally the first large free school built for the children of Bourne during the early years of the 19th century.

DIRECTORY BUSINESS FEATURE OF THE MONTH...

Home ReviveTim Armstrong, owner of Bourne-based specialist home-cleaning company, Home Revive, is keen to stress his environmentally-friendly credentials, when explaining the nature of his business. After twelve years operating the “Chem-Dry” franchise, Tim set up his independent Home Revive operation in 2010, concentrating on domestic carpets and upholstery, in Bourne and the surrounding area. There is a seven stage carpet-cleaning system at work, involving: vacuuming to remove any surplus items such as soil; a pre-spray; then the cleaning extraction machine; followed by buffing to remove stubborn stains; next the fluid spray protection; raking to lift the pile and, finally, the all-important cleaning of adjacent paintwork and surfaces. Furthermore, Tim is proud to be “Woolsafe” trained, meaning that customers with all-wool carpets know that his specialist expertise will be available to them.Much of the Home Revive cleaning is to service “end of let” properties for landlords, a situation which often

challenges Tim and the efficacy of his seven-stage system – but one which provides him with enormous satisfaction, every time a used and abused old carpet is returned to its former glory.Tim is proud of his sound reputation in this area, which has resulted in many recommendations for his services from associated tradesmen in the town, for which he is most grateful.
