Unlike Becky I’m refusing to put my heating on yet, but Christmas – well it’s my favourite time

of year, isn’t it everyone’s?

We are always very busy here at Discovering Magazines, particularly in the run-up to Christmas, but it has been great

to get out of the office recently and meet some of our readers. I’d like to say a big thank you to all those that came and said hello at last month’s Whittlesey Festival. It was a beautiful day and a huge success. I’m looking forward to the next event in March, where we can meet even more of you!

Welcome to our October edition...

Front cover image by RK’D Media

Summer is definitely over; the heating is on and the supermarkets are stocking selection boxes - this can

only mean one thing……..Christmas is coming! However, before we get carried away with Christmas, we’ve one more holiday to attend to – Hallowe’en! For those of you with children, there are numerous attractions that have special Hallowe’en-themed activities planned this month. Take a look at Pigeons Farm’s advert (on page

37); they have lots of events planned during October!

Inside this issue is the next instalment of the “Nene Parade geese debate”; it seems not everyone is as keen to have them around as some. The Events Diary is full as usual, with a wide variety of things to attend, and don’t forget to like our Facebook page - for even more listings and useful event reminders. If you have something that you would like to share with March residents, then e-mail me, at [email protected]

The harvest from the summer should all be in so don’t forget to take down the shading from the greenhouse. If you have any fruit or vegetables left in the greenhouse they will need every little bit of sun to ensure you get the very best from them and any garden plants that need to be overwintered in the greenhouse will appreciate the extra warmth. Pay particular attention to the guttering on your greenhouse, falling leaves can soon lead to blockages, damaged gutters and possibly broken glass. By planting hardy perennials in the autumn you will ensure borders are full of colour in the spring and summer. They will have a chance to establish roots, grow during mild winters and you lower the risk of transplant shock. Skylark has a great selection of locally grown hardy perennials and they are always on a multi-buy to save you money. It’s not too late to plant your spring bulbs! There is a great selection available now from dwarf narcissi and tulips to the new giant flowering bulbs and the ever popular daffodils. In fact you can fill a bag of Daffodil bulbs for only £4.99, this represents great value for money as every year you are rewarded with a great splash of spring colour when there is not much colour in the garden. Raking up the leaves from the lawn may seem like a never ending job, but it is better than leaving your lawn under a cold, damp suffocating

blanket of rotting vegetation which breeds diseases that could damage your lawn in the spring. You can make life easier though by investing in a wide head plastic rake, the large head will save you time and the soft tines won’t damage the grass. Raking the lawn will also remove any thatch (grass cuttings that have grown) this will allow rain water to soak away more easily and in turn prevent moss. To make sure the lawn is ready for another summer, treat with Evergreen Autumn Complete, it will remove any moss and strengthen the lawn’s roots and repay you with a green lawn through autumn and a better lawn in the spring and summer. As autumn progress’ food for the wild birds will become more and more scarce. They will need high energy feeds to ensure they can survive any cold snaps. Peanuts and suet balls are a vital feed throughout autumn and winter, they can be placed on bird tables or hung from feeding stations or trees in purpose built feeders. Many styles and types of feeders are available at Skylark to suit all budgets and situations from heavy duty feeders for long term use to stainless steel and plastic, all of which can be completely disassembled for cleaning to prevent disease. Suet balls are filled with seeds, peanuts, fruit and even insects to add extra interest and are great value at only £7.99 for a tub of fifty balls!

Autumn is nature’s natural time for planting and it is the perfect time to take care of your lawn

Nene Parade Geese Saga - The Next StageLast month, in Community Matters, I wrote about the geese living at Nene Parade and invited views from readers. Whilst I have had a number of comments via Facebook in favour of the geese, I have received a couple of letters from people living on Nene Parade who experience the geese first-hand and don’t share the same view. One reader claims that the council have asked the public not to feed them, the geese are noisy and they are messy, (I used to keep two Aylesbury ducks and remember the mess that they used to cause, so I can empathise with the disgruntled reader on this). The same reader points out that they do not need their diet supplementing

(quoting poultry.com as source), and that geese are protective as a group and are causing fear to some pedestrians

and other animals. The other letter has the same complaints and goes on to say that, what was once a lovely walk into town is now a case of running the gauntlet – dodging excrement, trying not to slip over and avoiding being attacked by the geese too. So what to do? Is there a compromise or will they always be a ‘bone of contention’ within Nene Parade and March residents? It would be interesting to hear from the council and from a goose expert (if they exist – I’m sure they do!) I understand that the geese in question are a domesticated species which complicates the matter somewhat as Defra have rules and laws against the release of domestic species into the wild. Maybe the best thing to do in this case would be to find a new home for the geese – they seem to be pretty domesticated in their behaviour, including protecting Nene Parade from potential threats! Again, feel free to let me know your thoughts at [email protected]

The event, which took place on Sunday September 6th, raised more than £1,450 for Ravenswood Pet Rescue. They will now be using the money to pay for the veterinary treatment received by the animals in their care. As well as the popular fun dog show, there were stalls, refreshments, face-painting and a disco to entertain the crowds throughout the day. Everyone who went enjoyed themselves, and feedback after the show has been fantastic. Besides raising a phenomenal amount of money for the charity, it has raised their profile within the community too. Here are a few photos taken from the day … visit the Facebook page to see more! The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau intelligence team is warning people of a new approach being used by scammers to carry-out “vishing” scams, through informing consumers of a pending Council Tax rebate. So what is vishing? The principle behind it is no different to phishing (internet fraud) - in which people try to fool you into disclosing your personal information, with the intention of identity theft or fraud. Where a criminal tries to illicit this over the phone, it is known as “vishing” (telephone fraud). Fraudsters, purporting to be from a local council, have targeted both male and female victims aged sixty and over, phoning to say that they have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket for a number of years and that they are entitled to a rebate; they normally say that this rebate should be worth approximately £7000. Once a victim is convinced that they are due a rebate for having been in the wrong tax bracket, the fraudster tells them that, in order to receive the rebate, they will need to pay an administration fee in advance; the payment they ask for varies between £60 - £350. The victim provides the details and makes the payment, but then is no longer able to make contact with the person they spoke to on the phone. When they phone their council about the rebate, the council will confirm that they know nothing about it and that they have been contacted by fraudsters.

Protect yourself from vishing:• Your local council will never phone out-of-the-blue to discuss a council tax rebate - if you receive a call of this nature, put the phone down straight away.• No legitimate organisation will ask you to pay an advanced fee in order receive owed money; so never give them your card details.• If you think you have been a victim of fraud, hang up the phone and, prior to making another call to report it, wait five minutes to clear the line as fraudsters sometimes keep the line open. Then call your bank or card issuer to report the fraud. Where it is possible, use a different phone line to make the phone call.

To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use their online fraud reporting tool at www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

Solar Panels time to fit them …NOW

Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate.

This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return.

However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) strongly suggest that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments are to see drastic cuts in 2016.

In fact, the Feed-in Tariff review document, published on August 27th by the DECC, laid out plans to cut the Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations by as much as 87%.

Although the plans have not yet been confirmed, it is likely that all bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019.

If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of 31st December will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh!

Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes.

As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond.

Thinking of installing solar panels on your property? Take a look to find out why now could be financially the very best time to do it.

Contact one of our team to discuss your requirements, and arrange a free, no obligation quotation.

Hallowe’enHalloween isn’t everyone’s favourite time of year but for some it gives them the opportunity to get dressed up in costume, take part in a spot of pumpkin carving, do a bit of trick or treating (if you’re a child) or even head to a spooky ball or a murder mystery event.

Trick or treating has changed a bit since my day….we used to wander the streets as a small group, unaccompanied by an adult and knocking on every door. These days, it seems to be a bit more organised – children are generally supervised by adults and the only doors knocked on are ones displaying pumpkins or other Hallowe’en-themed decorations. So, if you are entering into the spirit of things this year, don’t forget to pop a pumpkin outside your door to let the children know they are welcome! If trick or treating isn’t for you, maybe you could buy your children a Hallowe’en-themed gift as an alternative? Outer Rim Toys in March has got the latest range of limited-edition Hallowe’en Beanie Boos in stock and some seasonal Pop Vinyls too.

Many pubs and hotels have theme nights and many places of interest get the decorations out, and offer different activities in the run-up to the 31st. Here’s a few suggestions of places to visit:

Pigeon’s Farm, Thorney – www.pigeonsfarm.co.ukGory Stories, Peterborough Museum - www.vivacity-peterborough.com/event/gory-storiesGhost Walks, Peterborough Museum - www.vivacity-peterborough.com/museums-and-heritage/walks-and-tours/ghost-toursSpooky Tours at Burghley House, Stamford - www.burghley.co.uk/events/spooky-tours-2015Twin Lakes, Melton Mowbray - www.twinlakespark.co.uk/event_category/halloweenSpooky Spectacular at Sacrewell Farm, Thornhaugh - www.sacrewell.org.uk/spooky-spectacular-half-termMurder Mystery show and disco at Bull Hotel, Peterborough - www.peelhotels.co.uk/hotels/bull-hotel-peterborough-cambridgeshire-england/events-calendar-1267.shtmlHallowe’en Maze at Skylark, March - www.skylarkmaizemaze.co.uk/halloweenHalloween at the Mill - www.nationaltrust.org.uk/houghton-mill-and-waterclose-meadows/things-to-see-and-do/events/http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/houghton-mill-and-waterclose-meadows/things-to-see-and-do/events/

Did you know? The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31,

the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Aveling’s | March Museum By Peter Wright (Historian – March & District Museum)

B efore the railway came to March, travel was by a horse-drawn coach that called in at The Griffin, the town’s coaching inn. When the railway arrived in 1847, the owner and landlord of The Griffin, Ambrose Grounds, established a passenger taxi service between the railway station and his hotel. This taxi service also brought small packages and parcels into town.

In 1852, the Eastern Counties Railway agreed that Grounds’s brother-in-law, Owen Gray Aveling of Hobb’s Lot, could establish an agency for the delivery and collection of parcels for the railway. Initially, business was quite meagre. Aveling and Grounds co-operated by utilising The Griffin’s taxi. Traffic outgrew the capacity of the taxi, and Aveling had to use his own vehicle, advertising himself as a carter.

Owen Aveling died in December 1859, but his widow Ann, continued the business until her death in July 1877. Her son Charles continued the business using a horse-drawn trolley for heavier items, supplemented by a hand cart for parcels. By 1866, it was necessary to provide a horse-drawn parcels cart. The volume of goods to be distributed later required the use of two further trollies.

Charles managed the business for thirty-six years, until his death in November 1913. Then his widow Lydia continued the business. Her name is clearly shown on the side of the van that was a very familiar sight in the town.

Around 1923, the railway company are thought to have considered using their own transport, possibly using motor vehicles. Aveling’s contract continued however, until November 18th 1933. Thereafter, the railway co-ordinated their own delivery and collection from March station. Using motor vehicles, they operated over a much larger area. These vehicles included a very distinctive and versatile Scammell mechanical horse for the local town service.

The LNER also had an agency in the High Street, from where the public could send parcels without the need to visit the station. Presumably, the railway company paid Aveling’s a fixed contract fee for all its cartage, but a contemporary newspaper article refers to the LNER’s service as being without extra charge.

Aveling’s employees photographed with the parcels cart in 1933 were the Sutterby brothers, who had been driving the parcels cart for twelve years, and Harry who had been driving the goods trolley for eight years. The gentleman in the top hat was Owen Aveling. The other goods trolley was driven by Fred Haylett, who had worked for Aveling’s for twenty-nine years.

Besides parcels, the railway lorry collected large volumes of soft fruit, from numerous small market gardeners who supplemented their incomes, by growing produce in their back gardens. The railway was able to deliver these crops, to wholesale fruit markets throughout northern England early the following morning. The railway delivery service continued at March until the 1960s.

The town of March boasts two Scout Groups and both are thriving - with two ‘Beaver Groups’ for boys and girls aged between six and eight years old, three ‘Cub Packs’ for young people aged between eight and ten and a half years (and possibly a fourth to be created, to meet demand). Then there are two ‘Scout Troops’ for children aged ten and a half to fourteen years and an ‘Explorer Scout Unit’ for those aged fourteen to eighteen years old; this unit also runs the Duke of Edinburgh Award for young people.

What does Scouting do?Many people think it’s just camping and marshmallows by the campfire. That’s true. We do offer many outdoor activities offering adventure for everyone at every level, but, we also challenge members to stretch themselves - to try new things and help them discover their true potential. We are about making life better. We help to make our members healthier, happier and more confident. We do this in a friendly and fun way, where members make new friends - often for life! Scouting is one of the most trusted organisations in the UK. 800,000 parents trust Scouting with their children each week. People seem to like being part of an organisation which is confident about its aims and beliefs.

March Scouts

Scouting is truly inclusive as we welcome people from all backgrounds. 1st and 2nd March Scout Groups are currently recruiting young people (and old), to join in the adventure. We have the equipment and the time, if you have the desire for fun and don’t mind getting wet and muddy on occasion – bring a mate and find out what adventure is really about, and join twenty-eight million other people around the world who currently Scout.

A word from the Chief Scout – Bear Grylls.‘Two things matter in life: following your dreams and looking after your friends. This is what I love about Scouting. It’s about doing great things, loving and enjoying the great adventures and helping others to do the same.’

Did you know that eleven of the twelve people to have walked on the moon were Scouts? No? You do now!

Family problems with Social Services (care proceedings)

Bringing children up can be difficult, and sometimes the problems which are encountered by parents can get out of control and Social Services may then become involved.

It is important to remember that this does not always mean that your children will be removed from your care. Social Services are under an obligation to work with families, to try and resolve problems, and removing children from parents is always the last resort. The process however, and their sudden involvement, can be a frightening experience, and it is important to take advice from a children’s panel solicitor at the earliest opportunity.

The most common reason for Social Services taking their concerns about children to court is because the parents do not co-operate with them, to try and resolve the problems. Taking early legal advice means that you know where you stand from the start, and can be advised on the best course of action to take to solve the problems.

Sometimes, it is not possible to resolve the problems. Social Services must provide you with notice that they are considering issuing care proceedings. They will

send you a PLO (Public Law Outline) letter, inviting you to attend a meeting with your solicitor. You must take this letter seriously; failure to do so will result in the matter being placed before the court. If Social Services do take the matter to court, you have the right to challenge what they are saying. However, it is vital that you obtain the correct legal advice. Changes in the law mean that care proceedings must be concluded within twenty-six weeks. Therefore, if you do not act quickly, it can often be too late. Free Legal Aid is available for all areas of law dealing with Social Services.

From 1671, Sir Algernon Peyton was granted the Michaelmas Fair in March, on the second Tuesday in October. In 1826, it was reported that the new theatre had opened at the fair and had invigorated March and its neighbourhood. Mr Smedley had built it at his own expense and it was a ‘neat and respectable building’ with a very elegant and spacious interior. The decoration was of the highest order, having been carried out by a London artist, who had also painted the scenery. This made it one of the most attractive little theatres in the country and worthy of the inhabitants of ‘that truly respectable and ever-improving town’. As well as the usual very fine and well-liked actors, the manager had brought actors from the London and Edinburgh theatres (1).

In October 1915 at The Electric Palace cinema, the bill included a fine comedy, ‘Janet of the Chorus’ and ‘On the Shores of the Bosphorus’, a travel film of particular interest at the time. Later in the week, a topical film, ‘With the Allied Fleet in the Dardanelles’ was shown, which was expected to be of interest to everyone. F. Grounds and Sons held their second sale of horses at their Weekly Auction Yard in March when thirty horses were sold, including heavy horses, vanners, hackneys and Welsh ponies. Prizes were offered for the best carthorses fit for town work. Good prices were realised for the animals and the market was well attended by farmers and dealers. Auctioneers were pleased with the successful horse sale (2).

| History by Jennifer Lawler

Discovering......October in the town

In October 1936, there was a lengthy discussion at March Urban District Council of the need for more bridges over the river. Mr Truman proposed the erection of bridges: a by-pass road at Wigstone’s Road, linking Creek Road with Elwyn Road, and a footbridge at Marylebone Road. He said there was a lack of cohesion between the north and the south of the town. He also thought they should ‘try and concentrate the town closer together’. He thought that houses had been built ‘practically outside the town’. He regretted that the town had not adopted the Town Planning Act as other towns were growing, and ‘growing scientifically’ through that Act (3).

Pet Safety in the Home

• Fit child locks onto low level cupboards, particularly ones that house cleaning products.• Try and hide or cover electrical cables – thick covers can be bought from most DIY shops. Where possible, run them under carpets.• Consider using baby gates to make stairs safe. A puppy will manage to get upstairs quite easily, but coming down can prove a bit trickier – we don’t want to see puppies with broken limbs and this is more than possible if they tumble down a flight of stairs. • Lit candles, open fires and wood burners are obviously a potential hazard to any animal. However, a puppy or kitten would not realise this until they were perhaps too close to the flame! Don’t leave candles burning with unsupervised pets and use a fireguard if you have a working fireplace.• As daft as this may sound, washing machines and tumble driers are also hazards. Kittens will often look for a dark, warm place to settle down. We often hear of these two household appliances being the ideal place, so ensure the doors are kept closed once you have finished using them.

• Here’s a scenario for you. You are busy doing a little sewing - and the doorbell rings. You put down the sewing and before you know it, an hour has passed whilst chatting with the caller. In the meantime, the puppy has found your sewing box full of fun. There are cotton reels just right for throwing in the air and chewing - and let’s not forget the needles and pins. We see many a case where a dog or cat has had to undergo surgery to remove a needle, pin, fishing hook etc… from its throat. The surgery can be invasive and is painful, so just that extra second to put the sharp items away can save a traumatic visit to the vets.• Ensure non chemical poisons are removed, or placed out of reach. Foods, such as chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes, are toxic to dogs, for example, whereas daffodils, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettia are toxic to cats.

There are many potential hazards around your home for a new puppy or kitten, because everything is a potential game to them. So make sure the surroundings are safe before bringing your new pet home, to avoid any potential accidents.

By Suzhy Winifield RVN & Julie Howard

We love our pets, and their quirky, inquisitive natures are one of the things many of us love most. However, this quality can often get them into trouble, especially when introducing a new puppy or kitten into your home. So here are a few safety pointers for you to consider…

Caramel Apple CakeApple Crisps: u 1 Apple (cored and thinly sliced) u Tbsp Lemon Juice u Sugar (to sprinkle)

Apple Cake: u 250g Self-Raising Flour u 125g Unsalted Butter u 125g Dark Brown Soft Sugar u 1 Large Egg u 10-12 tbsp of Milk u 1 ½ tsp Cinnamon u ½ tsp Ginger u 225g Apples (cored and cubed) u 50g Raisins/ Sultanas u 1 tbsp Demerara Sugar

Preheat oven to Gas Mark 41. Prepare a bowl (big enough to hold a whole sliced apple) containing the lemon juice and topped up with cold tap water. Thinly slice the apple and place in the bowl to soak, then cover a baking sheet with grease-proof paper.2. Spread the apple slices onto the lined baking sheet and sprinkle with sugar, before placing at the bottom of the oven. The crisps will take about an hour to dry (depending on the thickness) and will need turning, half way through.

Caramel Sauce: u 50g Dark Brown Soft Sugar u 10g Butter u 90ml (6tbsp) Double Cream u Pinch of Salt

1. Grease and line a 20cm deep loose bottom cake tin, preheat oven to Gas Mark 4. 2. Mix the flour, sugar, butter, spices and egg until combined (the mixture should be the consistency, of coarse breadcrumbs) before adding the milk, a tbsp at a time, until the mixture goes smooth. 3. Add the sultanas and apple and stir into the mixture, until evenly distributed. 4. Spoon the mixture into the tin, smooth the mixture, making sure it is spread to the edges of the tin. Sprinkle the top with Demerara Sugar. 5. Bake for 1hr 20 minutes or until a cocktail stick dipped into the cake, comes out clean.

1. Melt the ingredients over a medium heat, in a heavy based pan until combined and dark in colour. 2. Bring the mixture to the boil and allow to bubble for 5 minutes until the colour has lightened. 2. Remove the caramel off the heat and allow to cool slightly before drizzling over the cake topped with the apple crisps.

Delivering Simple Financial Advice - That really works

A couple of statistics:• There are currently four people of working age supporting each pensioner in Britain. By 2035, this number is expected to fall to 2.5, and, by 2050, to just two.

• Today, for the first time, Britain’s over-65s now outnumber people under the age of 16. (data: Office for National Statistics) Therefore, if there are fewer people paying National Insurance (which is where state pension payments come from), it is logical to assume that the time at which pension benefits commence, or the amount collected, will need to change, otherwise the budget will not balance.

Implication – more pressure on state ben-efits?The government have assured us that state pension benefits will continue to be protected by inflation-linked, ‘triple lock’ annual increases. The new, simplified benefit commences in April 2016, where there will be winners and losers – but there are some opportunities for those approaching retirement age, if you know where to look.

How can we use this? The first stage is to define the level of income you

want in retirement (where do I want to be?) The next stage is to evaluate the plans already in place (where am I now?); then draw up a plan to bridge the gap. There are still many tax-efficient options to help your savings go further and, with greater flexibility in draw-ing benefits, a well-designed pension plan could be a valuable part of your planning portfolio.

For example: a contribution of £1,000 will be in-creased to £1,250 by the addition of tax-relief. This might be a better return than an alternative invest-ment strategy. Depending on your tax situation, there could be further tax savings associated with this action.

Implications of new legislation:Some contribution limits may restrict how much could be invested in a single tax year. However, many individuals have a great opportunity in using this as part of their portfolio. There may also be Estate Planning opportunities in using a pension in many circumstances.

If you want to explore how this feeds into your finan-cial planning, please book a free initial consultation.

The value of investments, pensions and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

| Legal corner by Janet Norris

“Where there’s a Will. .!”

M uch concern has been created by the recent decision of the Court of Appeal in Ilott v Mitson (2015). The case concerned the estate of the late Mrs Jackson, who died in 2004, and her estranged daughter, Heather. Heather was Mrs Jackson’s only child and she and her mother had been estranged for some twenty-six years when Heather, then aged seventeen, left home without the mother’s knowledge or agreement to live with Nicholas Ilott. She later married Mr Ilott.

There were three attempts at reconciliation, all of which failed. On the last occasion, it failed because Mrs Jackson took offence that the fifth child had been given the name of Heather’s paternal grandmother, whom Mrs Jackson did not like. The court took the view that Mrs Jackson had acted in a ‘capricious and harsh way’ towards Heather, but considered that both parties were responsible for the failed reconciliations.

Mrs Jackson’s estate was valued at £486,000 and in her will, subject to a legacy of £5,000 in favour of the BBC Benevolent Fund, she left her entire estate to be divided between three charities, to which Mrs Jackson had no connection.

Heather knew that her mother intended not to leave her anything in her will but subsequently brought a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 (“the Act”) for reasonable financial provision. She was initially awarded £50,000 but the matter then went through several appeals, culminating in the Court of Appeal decision in July 2015, in which Heather was awarded the sum required to purchase her property and £20,000 in cash to provide her with a small additional income. The award was intended to provide reasonable financial provision for Heather’s living expenses, without affecting the state benefits on which she relied.

This Month at the Cinema

There are only three words on everyone’s lips this month – “Bond, James Bond !”

“Spectre” is released on Monday, October 26th, unusually on the same day as the premiere. For this reason, you won’t be able to see it until after 8pm - but it will be worth it!

Bond, played by the ruggedly handsome Daniel Craig, peels back the layers of mystery and deceit to uncover the terrible truth behind sinister organisation SPECTRE. Tickets are on sale now and we recommend booking early for this top blockbuster.

While all the hype will be about “Spectre”, there are lots of other great movies to catch in October, with a family focus towards the end of the month.

Both “Hotel Transylvania 2” and “Pan” are released on October 16th, ahead of the October half- term break.

“Hotel Transylvania 2” sees Dracula and his friends try to bring out the monster in his half-human grandson.

“Pan” is a prequel to the JM Barrie story, which imagines how Peter made his way to Neverland and became the boy who wouldn’t grow up. Hugh Jackman stars as the devilish Blackbeard and introduces Levi Miller as Peter.

If you are a fan of 3D films, then don’t miss “The Walk”, released on October 9th. This movie promises some epic effects but is probably not recommended if you suffer from vertigo. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Philippe Petit, a French high-wire artist who attempted to walk between the towers of the World Trade Center in 1974 – without a safety net.

There is powerful drama from “Suffragette”, starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham-Carter and Meryl Streep. It follows the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, as they battle for women to get the vote. This is released on October 12th.

“Sicario”, out on October 9th, also looks to be a great film. Emily Blunt is an idealistic FBI agent who is enlisted by a government taskforce to battle the escalating drugs war at the border between the US and Mexico.

I visited Sound Advice Hearing after wearing NHS hearing aids for many years andwhat a life changing experience it proved to be! The patience, care and profession-al knowledge was second to none. I didn't feel pressured in any way whatsoever, this was reinforced when I decided to try some ‘state of the art’ hearing deviceson their free trial offer. Wow! I hadn't realised how much I had been missing.Suddenly I found myself not having to ask people to repeat themselves, I startedto enjoy socialising again, something I had been missing for a long time. I amnow able to hear the grandchildren properly!

My hearing devices connected to our telephone and I was able to hold a conversa-tion without getting frustrated and handing the phone over. Most importantlythanks to Sound Advice Hearing I now have a smile back on my face and so do allthe family, as my quality of life has truly been changed. Thank you…
