Tips for Dining Out With DiabetesTips to Lower Salt Intake When Dining Out

Eating less salt can substantially reduce the risk of health problemsassociated with high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heartdisease and stroke -- a cause of death for more than 2 out of every 3people with diabetes. The 2005 dietary food guidelines suggest decreasing daily salt intaketo about a teaspoon a day. Here are some guidelines to follow to helpyou keep your salt (sodium) intake down when eating out:AppetizersSelect fresh fruit or vegetables.Avoid soups and broths.Stay away from bread and rolls with salty, buttery crusts.SaladsSelect fresh fruits and vegetables.Avoid pickles, canned or marinated vegetables, cured meats, sea-soned croutons, cheeses, salted seeds.Order salad dressings on the side and use small amounts of them.Main coursesSelect plain foods including broiled, grilled, or roasted meat, poultry, fish, or shellfish.Select plain vegetables, potatoes, and noodles.Ask the server about the low-salt menu choices and ask how the foodis prepared.Request food to be cooked without salt or monosodium glutamate(MSG).Avoid casseroles, mixed dishes, gravies, and sauces. At fast food restaurants, skip the special sauces, condiments, andcheese.Avoid salted condiments and garnishes such as olives and pickles.DessertsSelect fresh fruits, ices, sherbet, gelatin, and plain cakes.

donations are needed and greatly appreciated. The Wilton Food Pantry is serviced with an all volunteer staff and is self-funded. New Food Pantries can not purchase food from Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY until after they have operated on their own for 6 months. Food drives within large employee groups are a great tool for collecting food. Currently food can be dropped off at all 3 Wilton Branches of Saratoga National Bank and the Wilton Ballston Spa National Bank branch. A food drop at the Wilton Hannaford begins today. Many thanks to the devoted Volunteers and Board members.
