In Loving Memory of our Dad, Herman Butleron his birthday 4/30/1905 ~ 5/15/1990
“He never looked for praises, he was never one to boast;He just went on quietly working, for those he loved the most.His dreams were seldom spoken, his wants were very few;
And most of the time his worries went unspoken too.He built a strong foundation, through all the storms of life;
A sturdy mand to look up to, when times were good or bad;One of our greatest blessings, the man we called Dad.”
With love from his children

TWO GREAT GIFTS FOR THAT GREAT GIVER: MOM(NAPSI)—Here are two excellent ideas about what to give the next time you want to getyour mother a present—whether for Motherʼs Day, her birthday or just to show how muchyou care.Considering she probably helped you learn to read, a book or two is likely to be greatlyappreciated, especially these:• For love of Mom. From teaching children to tie their shoes, to parallel parking, to out-fitting them for their first dance or first day in the dorm room, mothers have been theirkidsʼ chief counselors, cheerleaders, critics, chauffeurs and chefs.Now, this new book, “For the Love of Mom: Amazing True Stories of Moms and the Peo-ple Who Love Them” by Maria Bailey, can be a way to pay homage to the special womanwho rocked you, raised you, championed you, challenged you and even—at times—ex-asperated you.While the experience of motherhood is different for every woman, one thing is universal:Itʼs almost impossible to fathom the myriad of joys and triumphs encountered on thejourney.Whether the mom in your life became so by giving birth or through the blessings of adop-tion or stepparenting, sheʼs likely to be moved, inspired and entertained by these truestories that share both the monumental milestones and everyday moments of mother-hood. Some stories are humorous, some heartfelt; others will help moms through thetrying times, yet all underscore the devotion and dedication we admire most about moth-ers.This book celebrates moms and the uniquely important roles they play in everyoneʼslife.• Fun for fans. Another terrific tome, “Life Could Be Verse,” features the poetry of leg-endary actor Kirk Douglas.Beautifully bound, itʼs something most moms—Spartacus fans or not—would be happyto have out on the coffee table.The book was created by the renowned actor, crowned as one of the greatest malescreen legends in American film history by the American Film Institute, leading up to his99th birthday. It offers an intimate look into his life through poetry, prose and photos. Hepulls the curtain all the way back, exposing the bombs and blockbusters of both his per-sonal and professional life.He also celebrates the leading ladies in his life, from Marlene Dietrich to Lauren Bacallto Brigitte Bardot, as well as his wife of more than 60 years, the actress and film producerAnne Buydens.Douglasʼ words and his poems, written for his wife, his sons and others, are comical,sentimental, romantic, sometimes even painful but always intriguing.Where to find them: Both books are available on Amazon, from the publisher at www.hci-books.com and elsewhere books are sold.

OUTWIT THE SQUIRRELS(NAPSI)—Bird feeding can be a fulfilling hobby, if you know how to outsmart a clever squirrel whoʼseating your birdseed. These tips can help:1) Baffles: Install baffles, at least 15 inches wide and sloped, between the top of the feeder and itshanger on a hanging feeder or between the ground and the feeder for feeders on posts.2) Spinners: String spinners on a horizontal line.3) Location: Mount bird feeders on a smooth metal pole at least six feet high and prune anybranches within a 12-foot radius.4) Feeders:• Metal Feeders help minimize the damage from hungry squirrels.• Wire Cages placed around a bird feeder will keep squirrels out and allow smaller birds to continuefeeding but prevent larger birds from accessing the feeder.• Slammer Feeders designed with doors triggered by a large birdʼs or squirrelʼs weight close andhamper access to seed.• Interactive Bird Feeders such as the Squirrel Boss Bird Feeder. This humane and effective squir-rel-proof bird feeder has a remote control operated by you from inside your home that gives thesquirrel a harmless static shock correction that “tingles” but doesnʼt hurt the squirrel in any way.For more information, visit www.squirrelboss.com or call (888) 476-9499.5) Seed: Squirrels are less enticed by nyger, millet, safflower, canary and canola seeds. Addingcapsaicin to birdseed can also deter squirrels.

After sitting in a storage shed for a few months, your machines have likely acquired a nice layer ofdust, dirt and grime. Make sure to do a thorough cleaning of the entire machine and check for any damage or possibleblockages.• Never a dull moment. If you are working on your lawn mower, hedge trimmer or any other machine with a blade, theSpring tune-up is an excellent time to make sure itʼs in prime cutting shape. The blade should be sharpened at leastonce a year. While the blade is off, itʼs also a good time to finish cleaning the underside of the machine.• Donʼt forget the filter. Itʼs a good idea to start the season with a clean filter. If the machine has a foam filter, you canclean it with soap and water. However, if itʼs a paper filter, itʼs best to replace it with a new one.• A well-oiled machine. Whether itʼs a lawn mower, motorcycle or ATV, small-engine equipment will work better if itʼswell lubricated, particularly if it has been in storage. Make sure to oil the wheel bearings and other moving parts.• Prepare your engine. To make sure your engine starts up on the first try this Spring, try a fuel additive such as StartYour Engines! Itʼs a fuel revitalizer designed for use with any small 2- and 4-cycle motors that have been sitting in stor-age and are ready to reactivate. Just pour it directly into the gas tank, and the engine should start up fast, hassle-free.As an added bonus, it attacks and dissolves any gum or varnish buildup.To learn more, visit www.GoldEagle.com.
GO WITH A PRO TO BE SPRINKLER SAVVY(NAPSI)—With warmer weather upon us, you may be getting ready toboot up your irrigation system to return your landscape to its formerglory. Before you get started, remember that winter can take a toll onyour sprinkler system, causing anything from cracked pipes to brokensprinkler heads. This type of damage can result in lots of wasted water.Americans use nearly 9 billion gallons of water outdoors every day, pri-marily for landscape irrigation. Up to half of that is wasted due to evap-oration, wind, and runoff from overwatering. In fact, a single broken ormissing sprinkler head can waste up to 25,000 gallons of water andmore than $90 over a six-month irrigation season—plus, itʼs not healthyfor your plants!To reduce water waste (and avoid rising utility bills) this summer, con-sult a certified irrigation professional to spruce up your sprinkler systemthis spring. An irrigation professional certified by a WaterSense-labeledprogram is equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to getyour watering system in tip-top shape. Go with a pro to:• Audit: Test your irrigation system to confirm that it performs properlyand efficiently.• Install, maintain and repair: Select and service the appropriate equip-ment and site layout, as well as ensure proper scheduling of your irri-gation system to optimize performance.• Design: Customize your irrigation system to best suit your landscapeand account for local climate conditions.Even if you donʼt need a full irrigation makeover, before you ramp up
your watering efforts, give your system a little sprinkler spruce-up withthese four steps: inspect, connect, direct and select. Inspect your sprin-kler heads for cracks; look for leaks where sprinklers connect to hosesand pipes; direct spray onto your landscape and away from drivewaysand sidewalks; and, if you are currently using a clock timer to schedulewatering, select a WaterSense-labeled, weather-based irrigation con-troller, which uses local climate data to provide only the water yourplants need.You can learn more about how to maintain a water-smart irrigation sys-tem, find a certified irrigation professional, and search for WaterSense-labeled irrigation controllers by visiting the U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agencyʼs WaterSense website at www.epa.gov/wa-tersense/outdoor/watering_tips.html.

FIVE QUICK WAYS TO UPGRADE YOUR HOME FOR RESALE(NAPSI)—Whether you’re considering cashing in on your equity, downsizing,trading up, moving for a change of scenery or relocating for better prospects, afew smart investments and improvements can help your home stand out fromthe competition so you get top dollar. Even if you’re not planning on movinganytime soon, these strategies can maximize your home’s value and increase itsmarketability:• Sprucing up the exterior. If you think you’ll have a few years before you move,work on your landscaping now to give plants time to mature. Look for easy-careperennials such as hostas, which multiply on their own. If you have less time,you can still achieve a quick makeover by power washing paths and siding, paint-ing or upgrading your front door and keeping the lawn watered and weeded.• Removing eyesores inside. Some minor adjustments can help buyers recognizewhat’s great about your home. Swap outdated fixtures, remove wallpaper andgive everything a deep clean. Replacements don’t have to be top of the line; theyjust need to eliminate hang-ups for potential buyers.• Improving the kitchen—to a point. You probably won’t recoup the cost of afull kitchen renovation but smaller projects such as upgrading appliances andpainting or refinishing cabinets can modernize the space.• Refreshing rooms with neutral paint. This is a time-honored tip for a reason.While seeing your favorite bold hues on the walls makes you happy, potentialbuyers may not agree. A fresh coat of neutral paint can help them envision theirown belongings in the space.• Focusing on energy efficiency. The right energy-smart upgrades can assurebuyers they’re seeing an efficient home where utility bills can be minimized.Adding insulation to the attic and walls can make a dramatic improvement inmany homes. Consider the windows as well. Adding a heat-rejecting windowfilm such as 3M Sun Control Window Film can reduce cooling costs and typi-cally does not change the windows’ appearance. Since the window film can rejectup to 99 percent of UV rays, it can protect the investment you made in your hard-wood floors, rugs, window treatments, furniture and artwork.Learn More For further facts, visit www.3M.com/homeimprovement.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Take Five And Check Your Tires
(NAPSI)—Keep your family and vehicle safe as you preparefor your summer travels.Temperatures are rising and summer road trip season is here.It is imperative for motorists to stay on top of tire maintenanceduring summer months because as temperatures start to in-crease, so do the frequency of tire blowouts. Maintainingproper tire pressure not only improves road safety, it givesmotorists the most from their tires. Improperly inflated tireslead to decreased steering and braking control as well as ex-cessive tire wear and fuel consumption.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administra-tion, only 19 percent of consumers keep their tires properlyinflated. Improper tire care contributes to about 200 fatalitieseach year. The agency also estimates that about 11,000 tire-related crashes occur annually.
To get the most from your tires this summer, here are five im-portant maintenance tips from the worldʼs largest independ-ent tire and wheel retailer, Discount Tire:
1. Get Pressure Right—Low tire pressure can decrease fueleconomy. Tires may lose up to one pound PSI (per squareinch) of air pressure per month. The specific inflation pressurenumber may be found on the vehicle placard located insidethe driverʼs door. Donʼt forget to check trailer tires. Checkingthe tire pressure for boat, travel and utility trailers is as im-portant as for your car or truck. Make it a point to check tirepressure every month, using the vehicle manufacturerʼs rec-ommended tire pressure.
2. Stay Sticky with Tread—Lack of tread affects the tireʼs abil-ity to stick to the road, especially in wet conditions. Make suretires donʼt have uneven wear, which indicates something iswrong with the tire. High or low spots or unusually smoothareas may decrease traction and increase the risk of road ac-cidents. Road trippers should also check tire tread depth byusing the “penny test.” Insert a penny upside down into thetread. If you see Abe Lincolnʼs entire head, itʼs time to replacethe tire.
3. Rotate Often—Regular rotation helps achieve uniform tirewear and improves road performance. Tires rotated every6,000 miles have longer life and will help maximize your tireinvestment.
4. Donʼt Forget the Spare—Donʼt get stuck with a flat tire inthe middle of nowhere and discover that your spare is alsoflat. Check your spare tire on a regular basis as you wouldyour other tires.
5. Donʼt Overload—Overloading your vehicleʼs or trailerʼs car-rying capacity is dangerous and can lead to tire failure. Han-dling, control and braking are also negatively impacted.Check your ownerʼs manual for load capacity specificationsprior to packing your vehicle before vacation.
Remembering these tips and taking five minutes each monthto inspect your tires will go a long way in keeping you andyour passengers safe. Discount Tire offers free tire air pres-sure inspections, available at more than 900 locations nation-wide. To learn more about tire safety, visitwww.discounttire.com.
