GARDNER-WEBB This is the ninth meeting between Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb with GWU being one of four teams CCU has played in each of its first eight years (joining VMI, Liberty and Charleston Southern). Coastal Carolina owns a 7-1 advantage in the series, including a 3-1 mark in Conway. The Chants dropped the first meeting between the teams, 38-17, but has won each of the last seven. Except for a 52-24 Coastal win at Gardner-Webb in 2006, the last six wins have not come easy. Coastal needed overtime in 2005 and 2010 and none of the wins — except 2006 — have been by more than five points. 2003 — Gardner-Webb spoiled Coastal first-ever Big South game as Chris Foster rushed for 123 yards to lead the Bulldogs to a 38-17 decision. 2004 — Coastal jumped out to a 17-0 lead and cruised to the 31-19 decision. Patrick Hall rushed for 103 yards and Ren McKinnon added 75. 2005 — Gardner-Webb took a three-point lead with 27 seconds left, but Coastal went 41 yards in five plays and Josh Hoke hit a 45-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime. CCU’s Anthony Steele picked off a pass in OT and Hoke hit a 25 yard field goal for the 34-31 overtime win. 2006 — Coastal scored 14 points in the first, second and fourth quarters, adding 10 in the third, en route to the 52-24 win and clinching at least a share of its third straight confer- ence title. Tyler Thigpen completed 22-of-27 passes for 306 yards and rushed for 119 yards on 10 carries. 2007 — Down 14-3 in the third quarter, Jerome Simpson caught TD passes of 39 and six yards to lift the Chants to a 17-14 win. Mike Tolbert rushed for 100 yard on 16 attempts. 2008 — Zach MacDowall threw for 292 yards and three scores and James Pallassino sealed the win — capping a 4:50 drive — with a 36-yard field goal with 47 ticks left for the 23-18 win. 2009 — Josh Norman picked off three passes, MacDowall set a school record with 25 completions and the Chants scored nine unanswered in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 4:17 left, to win 26-21. 2010 — Gardner-Webb scored a touchdown with 28 second left to force overtime and scored first with a field goal in the extra period. However, MacDowall turned a busted play into a 17-yard gain then scored from eight yards out for the win. Dominique Davenport was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week, getting 10 stops and a pick six. The Big South single-season PBU mark is 17 (also set in 2004). In addition to his pass defense, Norman is tied for the team lead in tackles with 32. His 12 career interceptions rank seventh (tied) for most among active FCS players and second-best on the CCU career list behind Teal’s school and Big South records of 17.

Bad loss Coastal’s loss at LIberty not only knocked the Chanticleers from the top 25 but is stands as one of the worse setbacks in school history. The 63 points allowed was the second-most ever given up by CCU, galling at Penn State 66-10 in the 2008 season opener, and the most CCU has allowed in a league game. The previous worse loss was a 58-13 loss, also at Liberty, in 2009.

game 100 For Coastal on tHe Horizon Coastal Carolina will play its 100th career football game on Nov. 5 when the Presbyterian Blue Hose come to Brooks Stadium. Also on that day, Coastal will celebrate Senior Day, Family Weekend and Athletics Hall of Fame inductees.

Home sWeet Home (36-13 at Home — 56-23 on natural grass all-time) Coastal Carolina opened 2011 with five games being played on natural grass, including three home contests. The streak ended with a road game at Liberty’s Williams Stadium, which features SportsTurf. The Chanticleers play in Brooks Stadium with Benton Field being natural grass. For its history, Coastal has played 79 of its 97 games on natural grass. The Chanticleers are 56-23 (.709) on natural grass overall — 36-13 (.735) at home and 20-10 (.667) on the road. Coastal was 6-3 on natural grass in 2010 and is 4-1 on natural turf to date this season. When playing on artificial surfaces, Coastal is now just 4-14 in its now nine-year history.

Home streak alive Coastal had its conference win streak snapped at five with a 63-27 loss at Liberty this past week. However, Coastal has won three straight Big South home games, dating back to a 45-31 win over #11 Liberty last November. Overall, Coastal has won five straight regular-season home games, dating back to that Liberty win.

He tied a career high with six receptions (third time in his two-year career and second time this season). The 90 yards marksthesecond-bestsingle-gamemarkinhiscareer,getting92atNorthCarolinaA&Tearlierthisseason. Over his last nine games (dating back to last season), Hazel has scored eight TDs and caught 31 passes for 472 yards. Hazel has four receiving TDs this season, second-best in the league, and ranks eighth (tied) on the CCU single-season list. He has nine caeer TD catches, fourth-best on the CCU career list and one from tying Marquel Willis for third.

tHanks a lott Senior and All-American candidate Marcus Lott had an impressive game in the Liberty loss. How-ever, the effort proved costly as he suffered a sprained wrist, which will sideline him for 2-3 weeks. In the game, he Coastal with 10 stops, including a TFL, adding a PBU and forced fumble. The 10 tackles were his second-best career total and the forced fumble was the second of his career. After the Liberty game, Lott is tied for the team lead in tackles with 32 while ranking eighth in the Big South in passes defended (0.6 —4 PBU). In the season opener, Lott came through with a huge momentum-turning play early in the Furman win to earn the team’s Special Teams Player of the Week award. After Coastal Carolina struggled on its first offensive possession and gave Furman the ball on the CCU 44 due to a short punt, the Paladins had a 25-yard run and were primed to score. However, back-to-back incompletions forced a 36-yard field goal attempt, which Lott blocked. It was Lott’s first career block and the 18th blocked kick in CCU’s now ninth year of football. Coastal used that momentum to score a TD on the ensuing drive and never relinquished the led. Lott finished with five tackles, four solo stops. In week two, Lott was credited with seven tackles, including a highlight-reel, open-field tackle, while adding a key tackle for loss and pass breakup in the win over Catawba. At Georgia, Lott had five tackles (four solo) with a pass break up and he added a PBU at North CarolinaA&T.

JoHnnie B. good; pHil tHe void With the injury to Marcus Lott, Coastal will have to rely on now veteran sophomores Johnnie Houston and Philip George at safety to lead a group of freshmen in the rotation. Houston ranks third on the team in tackles with 29 and George has 19 stops with two PBU and a fumble recovery. Coastal will now rely on redshirt freshman Pernell Williams to take Lott’s spot, while first-year sophomore Lorenzo Boyles will serve as Williams’ backup. True freshmen Denzell Rice and Miles Rankin will be call upon as a backup at any of the three safety spots.

Hillary playing tHe perCentages Aramis Hillary leads the Big South and ranks fifth among FCS signal callers in passing completion (68.69 pct), while ranking 17th among ALL Division I quarterbacks (FCS and FBS). At his current pace, Hillary will set the CCU single-season record for pass completions. Tyler Thigpen currently holds the mark at 64.0 percent in 2006. Hillary can also threaten Thigpen’s single-season pass efficiency rating of 167.4 in 2006 as Hillary’s rating is 159.89 (12th-best in the NCAA).

What is a Chanticleer?A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Caro-

lina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to the University when it was a member of the University of South Carolina system from 1954-93.

A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

Hillary (someWHat) redeems HimselF; CCu 4tH in nCaa in FeWest piCks Aramis Hillary threw his first — and only — interception of 2011 in the second quarter of the Georgia game. While he committed the turnover, he helped Coastal get the ball right back, forcing Bacarri Rambo to fumble the ball, which was recov-ered by Coastal’s Jeremy Height. Since that pick, Hillary has not thrown an interception in 80 attempts. For that, Hillary ranks ninth (tied) in the Big South for most fumbles forced. Coastal leads the Big South and ranks fourth (tied) in the NCAA for fewest in-terceptions thrown. Coastal is one of just nine schools in ALL OF DIVISION I to throw one or fewer interceptions this season.

CHris presley Hits Century mark Chris Presley had a career game in the win over VMI, posting career highs with six receptions for 100 yards – Coastal’s first 100-yard receiver this season. In 14 previous career games prior to VMI, Presley had just seven catches for 112 yards.

Heading into VMI, Coastal quar-terbacks had completed passes to at least nine different receivers in the first four games. Coastal only completed passes to eight different receivers versus VMI. The trend resumed at Liberty as nine players caught a pass, including DeMario Bennett who both threw and caught a TD against the Flames.

Hillary makes Case For player oF tHe Week in vmi Win Aramis Hillary only played two quarters and one drive in the third quarter to avoid injury with back-up Jamie Childers already sidelined with injury. In that short time, Hillary rushed for a career-high 114 yards, completed 14-of-23 passes, threw for 245 yards – 10 yards shy of his career high, had 359 yards of total offense and accounted for three TDs. On Coastal’s first drive, Hillary gave CCU a 7-0 lead with a 39-yard rushing TD. The rush was the longest by Hillary in his career and the longest by a Chant in 2011. On the second drive, Hillary completed 4-of-6 passes for 45 yards and had a 14-yard run on 3rd and 19 to set up Grant Clayton’s 28-yard FG. On CCU’s fourth drive, Hillary rushed for 10 yards on three carries and hit Jamaul Boswell for a 39-yard TD. With 4:24 left in the second quarter, Hillary directed two scoring drives to put CCU up 27-3 at the break. First, he had a 13-yard rush and completed back-to-back passes to Chris Presley for a total of 39 yards to the one. While the drive stalled, Clayton hit a 24-yard FG. VMI would throw a pick on the ensuing drive and, with 1:15 left, Hillary directed a 6-play, 67-yard drive in 56 seconds. He had a 27-yard completion to start the drive, had an 11-yard run in the middle and threw

saCks streak ends, anotHer starts Coastal Carolina ranked first in the Big South and third in the NCAA, allowing just seven sacks in 12 games last season. Also, Coastal did not allow more than one sack in any one game last season. That streak came to an end when Aramis Hillary was sacked twice over a three-play span early in the fourth quarter in the season-opening win over Furman. However, despite Hillary and Jamie Childers racking up a total of 26 negative rushing yards in the Catawba win, none of the losses came as result of a sack. Also, despite struggling offensively, Coastal Carolina did not allow a sack at Georgia. CoastaldidallowonesackinthewinatNorthCarolinaA&T,CodyCraigwassackedin the VMI win and Hillary was dropped once for a sack at Liberty. Coastal’s five sacks allowed (0.83 avg.) this season leads the Big South and ranks 10th in the nation for fewest sacks allowed. Prior to last year’s seven-sack performance, Coastal had allowed 25 sacks in both 2008 and ‘09.

o-line experienCe Coastal Carolina returns four starters — five if you count tight end David Duran — and two experienced backups from last year’s successful offensive line. The Chants return All-Big South tackle Jamey Cheatwood, Tim Franklin, Bryan Brooks and Pat Williams, while Caleb Dees and Will Middleton — each of whom had one start in 2010 and saw extended action as backups. The current starting five have 91 starts between them and seen action in a combined 131 games. Cheatwood, a sophomore, has played in all 18 games over the 2010-11 seasons, starting 17 at left tackle. Franklin, who has started every position along the front five except right tackle, has played in 40 of CCU’s 41 games since 2008, missing one of the 12 games in ‘08 as a redshirt freshman, and has started each of the last 29 games (11 at left tackle, 10 at right guard, five at left guard and two at center). Williams played in all 12 games in 2010, starting 10, and has started all six games at center in 2011. He also played in six games as a redshirt freshman in 2009. Dees has started all six games at right guard this season after playing in eight games, with two starts at right guard, in 2010 as a redshirt freshman. Brooks has played in each of Coastal Carolina’s 41 games since 2008. He has started at right tackle each of the last 32 games, dating back to the final three games of 2008, his redshirt freshman season. Middleton showed his versatility at Liberty, starting and playing tight end. He started once in 2010 at let tackle for Cheatwood and has now played in 10 career games. Also rotating in at both guard spots is redshirt freshman Chad Hamilton. He has played in all six contests in 2011, and Kevin Hart is the primary backup at center.

get to 200 and Win is a near loCk In its ninth season, Coastal Carolina is 37-4 (.902) when rushing for 200 or more yards in a game. Coastal Carolina rushed for 231 yards in the 2011 season-opening win over Furman and piled up 214 in a win over VMI. The only losses have been in the 2005 season finale versus Charleston Southern and losses in 2008 to Georgia Southern, Presbyterian and Liberty.

Hillary Was Big soutH player oF tHe Week in Week one Coastal Carolina junior quarterback Aramis Hillary was named the Big South Offensive Player of the Week by the league’s office as well as being the Big South Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com, for his play in the Chanticleers 30-23 season-opening win over Furman. Hillary, who was making his first career start, was Coastal Carolina’s leading rusher and passer as the Chanticleers rolled up 426 yards of total offense. He rushed 16 times for 61 yards with two scores, including the game-winner with 1:32 left, and completed 10-of-13 passes for 130 yards with no interceptions. Hillary gave Coastal a 7-0 lead in the first quarter as he directed a 15-play, 79-yard drive in which he had rushes of 5, 7, 4, 13 and 4 yards. Facing 3rd-and-6 on the 17, Hillary rushed 13 yards for a first down, then, on the next play, scored from four yards out. With the game tied 16-16 in the third quarter, Hillary had a 39-yard completion to Matt Hazel that set up a Coastal touchdown two plays later. With the game tied yet again in the fourth quarter at 23-23, Hillary led the Chants on a nine-play, 71-yard touchdown drive to secure the win. He was 2-of-2 passing for 24 yards and capped the drive with the go-ahead 3-yard score.

Quinn BaCkus gets Big soutH FresHman Honor For uga game Coastal Carolina linebacker Quinn Backus was named the Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week for his play at Georgia Sept. 17. Backus, a product of Greenwood, had seen limited action on special teams, but had no statistics enter the Georgia contest. However, Backus saw extended action at linebacker in the second half versus the Bulldogs. He recorded six tackles (three solo, three assisted) to tie for the third-best tackle total on the team. Of his six stops, two forced fourth down plays and two others forced a turnover on downs. Backus becomes the second Chanticleer to be honored by the Big South this season. Earlier, junior quarterback Aramis Hillary was tabbed the Big South Offen-sive Player of the Week for his play in the win over Furman in the season opener.

norman named Big soutH deFensive player oF tHe Week vs vmi Coastal Carolina senior Josh Norman was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week for his play in helping the 24th-ranked Chanticleers defeat VMI in the teams’ 2011 conference opener this past Saturday. For the third straight game, Norman led Coastal in tackles, collecting seven - all solo - versus the Keydets. He added three pass break ups and first interception of the season. On VMI’s second drive, with the Keydets on the CCU 34, Norman had his first PBU on first down. Three plays later, on 4th-and-4, Norman had a PBU in the end zone to force a turnover on downs. In addition to his impressive statistics, Norman was matched up most of the game (including his interception and one PBU) with one of the conference’s top receivers, Tracy Hairston. For the game, Hairston only caught three passes for 16 yards. On one completion to Hairston, Norman made a stop for no gain. In the third quarter and VMI facing 2nd-and-7, Hairston caught a pass and Norman made the stop for just a five-yard gain. On the next play, Norman registered his third PBU of the game to force a punt. This marks Norman’s third career Big South Defensive Player of the Week honor and the third time a Chanticleer has been recognized by the league in 2011. Earlier, quarterback Aramis Hillary was named Offensive Player of the Week (versus Fur-man) and linebacker Quinn Backus was tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week (versus Georgia).

Against the Keydets, he ranked second on the team (behind Big South Defensive Player of the Week Josh Norman) with five tackles (four solo and one assist), including a five-yard tackle for loss. The TFL came on a completion. Later in the drive, with VMI facing 4th-and-11, Backus had a QB hurry, forcing a quick throw for an incompletion and giving CCU the ball on downs. Also registered a tackle on a kickoff and had a tackle for a one-yard gain. The assist came in the 3rd quarter on an 8-yard gain with VMI facing 2nd-and-20. CCU got a sack on the next play and would force a punt. At Liberty, Backus ranked second on the team with a career-high nine tackles, while recovering a fumble that led to a CCU score. He saw extended action at Lib-erty due to the injury to Andrae Jacobs.
