What is a Chanticleer?A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal

Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina

system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning

and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

The facility houses offi ces, locker rooms and team meeting rooms for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. In addition, the facility includes a dual use space that is suitable for expanded intramural sports and fi t-ness/recreation activities for the University’s more than 9,000 students. The Sasser Cup The Sasser Cup Trophy, named for former Big South Commissioner and former Coastal Carolina Director of Athletics Buddy Sasser, is awarded to the Big South member institu-tion with the most successful year athletically based on an average points system. Points are awarded based on both regular-season and tournament finish in each of the League’s 18 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tour-nament, respectively. A school must be eligible to participate in a specific sport champion-ship to receive Sasser Cup points in that sport. There is a weighted factor of 1.5 for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned. Coastal Carolina has won nine Sasser Cups, has never finished lower than fourth in the Sasser Cup standings and has finished either first or second each year since 1995-96. The Chanticleers finished second in the 2011-12 standings.

Each October the Chanticleers raise money for breast cancer research. On Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team dropped a tough five-set match to conference opponent Winthrop University during the Chanticleers annual DIG PINK Breast Cancer Awareness Rally in Kimbel Arena. More than 600 fans came out to the event. The Coastal volleyball team raised money for two weeks prior to the match with the proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation and to Caring in Our Lifetime. The Side-Out Foundation was created in 2004 for collegiate volleyball players and coaches to work together to further breast cancer awareness. Caring in Our Lifetime is a local breast cancer organization that raises funds to provide assistance with medical expenses to those affected by breast cancer in Horry and Georgetown counties.

The team placed pink shovels throughout the campus the week of the match and if any person found a shovel and brought it to the match they received a free T-shirt.

The team also held a bake sale in the weeks prior to the match and had a silent auction that featured a number of items including the pink jerseys the team wore throughout the match.

In her fifth year at the helm for the Coastal Carolina vol-leyball team, head coach Tammi McCaudy-Lee led the squad to its first Big South Tournament Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1996. McCaudy-Lee received Big South Coach of the Year honors for her success during the 1996 sea-son. During the beginning of the season, the team started off with a school record six wins in a row, including four 3-0 shut-outs. Coastal battled through some losses, but at the start of

conference play, the team registered a then-school record 10-game win streak which was broken up by a 3-2 loss at UNC Greensboro. The UNC Greensboro match was the only loss for the Chants for the remainder of the season until the NCAA Tournament. Coastal posted a 13-1 record in league ac-tion, the best in the Big South. In the Big South Tour-nament, the squad recorded 3-0 shutout victories against Charleston Southern and Liberty to advance to the championship game. In the final match, the Chanticleers downed UMBC 3-0 to claim their first Big South Tournament title. Roberta Croteau was named tournament MVP and selected to the Big South All-Tournament Team. Croteau also earned Big South Volleyball Player of the Year and Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. Coastal had two athletes earn All-Big South honors in Croteau on the First Team and Emma Prowse on the Second Team. Before traveling to Atlanta, Ga., for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the team hosted University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in a play-in game, which the Chants won 3-0. The road ended for Coastal in Atlanta as Coastal fell 3-0 to Georgia Tech. The 1996 team holds several records in the Coastal Carolina all-time record book. The squad ranks first on the all-time list for service aces with 296 and second in kills with 1,832.

Roberta Croteau was named Big South Volleyball Player of the Year in 1996 and

Despite a 0-6 record to start the season, the 1998 vol-leyball team rebounded to post a 23-13 record to close the season and capture its second Big South Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The squad rolled off win streaks of five games on four separate occasions throughout the season. With a 6-4 record and head coach Tammi McCaudy-Lee’s last season, Coastal Carolina secured the No. 3 seed in the Big

South Tournament. During the first two days of competition, the Chants picked up a 3-0 shutout over Charleston Southern and a 3-1 victory over Radford. Coastal ad-vanced to the tournament final to take on regular season champion Liberty, where they defeated the Flames 3-1 to earn the school’s second Big South Tournament

title in three years. Autumn Staub and Emilie Welch were named Big South Tournament co-MVPs. Staub was also a First Team All-Big South honoree while Jelena Mirkovic was selected to the All-Big South Second Team. The team traveled across the country to Provo, Utah, for the first round of the tourna-ment to face Brigham Young. Coastal dropped its first round match to the Cougars 3-0, ending the team’s tournament run and five-game win streak. The 1998 team holds several records in the Chanticleer all-time record book. The squad ranks third all-time in season statistics in both digs with 2,148 and kills with 1,775. In the indi-vidual record book, Welch sits third in assists in a season with 1,347.

Autumn Staub was named Big South Tournament co-MVP and First Team All-Big

South. She also ranks eighth all-time at Coastal in kills with 1,195.

As the old adage goes, “It’s not how you start the sea-son, but how you finish it,” and that could not be more true for the 2009 squad. The Chanticleers had a tough road, going 7-7 out of conference and 10-6 in the Big South to finish fourth in the league. However, the turning point in the season came on Senior Night after the team lost a disappointing match to Presbyterian. At the conclusion of the match, the team went into the locker room and

talked about what needed to be changed and where they were going to go from there. After a lot of tears and frustration, the squad emerged as a new team with one goal--to win the Big South Tournament and go to the NCAA Tournament. Looking like a new team, Coastal faced its first test in the opening round of the Big South Tour-nament as it beat High Point 3-2 in a tough five-set match. The Chants played spoiler for the third time of the season, defeating regular season champion UNC Asheville in all three meetings of the season, including a 3-0 win in the Big South semifinals to ad-vance to the tournament finals. In a rematch of the 2008 championship match, the squad defeated Lib-erty 3-1 to earn the school’s third Big South Tourna-ment championship. Junior Chelsy Kimes was named Big South Tournament MVP after registering 50 kills in three matches, including 12 kills in one set against UNC Asheville. Kimes was also se-lected to the All-Tournament team along with ju-nior Megan Bickford. Freshman Sierra Livesay was named Big South Freshman of the Year and senior Jill Nyhof earned Big South Scholar-Ath-lete of the Year for the second year in a row as well as being selected to the ESPN The MagazineAcademic All-America Second Team. Coastal Carolina was sent to Nebraska to play the Cornhuskers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 3-0.

Chelsy Kimes was named Big South Tournament MVP after registering 50 kills

in three matches, including 12 kills in one set against UNC Asheville. She also was named to the All-Big South First Team for the second

year in a row.
