What is a Chanticleer?A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal

Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina

system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with

cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

MISSION

STATEMENT

Coastal Carolina University Mission StatementCoastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution that seeks to develop students who are both knowledgeable in their chosen fields and prepared to be productive, responsible, healthy citizens with a global perspective. To deliver on this commitment, Coastal Carolina recruits highly qualified and motivated students, faculty, and staff from the region, state, nation, and world to create a diverse and dynamic student-centered learning environment.

Because Coastal Carolina embraces the teacher-scholar model, it places primary emphasis on high quality teaching and engaged learning, and it supports faculty research, creative activities, and expert collaboration in the community, state, nation, and world. This focus enables faculty and staff to mentor students in collaborative research, creative opportunities, and internships. To nurture this active learning community, Coastal Carolina maintains a broad range of contemporary technologies, program-ming, support services, and innovative course offerings and delivery methods. The result is alumni who are well prepared for professional careers or graduate programs in their chosen fields and who continue to be connected to Coastal Carolina.

Inspired by its founding in 1954 to serve the educational needs of the immediate area, Coastal Carolina has grown with the region to become a mid-sized regional comprehensive university with a tradition of a strong liberal arts core. As such, Coastal Carolina commits its resources to maintaining a population of 8,000–12,000 students by building baccalaureate and selec-tive master’s programs of national and/or regional significance in the arts and sciences, business, humanities, education, and health and human services. Coastal Carolina fully embraces its leadership role as a regional center of economic and intellectual resources, lifelong learning, cultural and recreational opportunities, and athletic programs.

As Coastal Carolina executes this mission, it recognizes its responsibility to be a role model to the community and to the profes-sions by assuring fair and honest treatment of people with whom it interacts and sustainable stewardship of resources entrusted to it, adopting the highest standards of integrity and accountability, and committing itself to excellence through continuous self-improvement.

Coastal Carolina University Athletics Mission StatementThe Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics provides our student-athletes the opportunities and preparation to reach their potential as responsible and productive citizens through academic, athletic and personal success. In providing student-athletes the opportunity to achieve excellence in these three areas we are developing Champions for Life.

Kimbel Arena is home to the Coastal Carolina volley-ball team, as well as the Chanticleer men’s and women’s basketball teams. The arena is connected to the Williams-Brice Recreation Center. The arena opened in 1972 and holds just under 1,040 fans. Following the conclusion of the 2011-2012 academic year the volleyball team and the basketball teams will play in the new Student Convocation/Recreation Center, which will open in 2012. Coastal Carolina opened its new strength and condition-ing center in June 2010. The 13,000-square foot facility, which is part of the Adkins Field House, is more than dou-ble the size of the old weight room. The Adkins Field House features the latest in strength and conditioning equipment.

Kristen Bauer enters her 13th season as head coach at Coastal Carolina University following a 14-18 overall record and a fifth place finish in the Big South Conference in 2010. She is the winningest volleyball coach in Coastal Carolina history with 210 wins, against 176 losses, and owns a 105-67 career record in the Big South. In addition to her success on the court, Bauer's teams have produced in the classroom as well. Her team was publicly recog-nized by the NCAA for its Academic Progress Rate of 1,000, which is the highest number a team can receive and a Chanticleer has been the Big South Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year six times since 2000, including a run of three straight years with Jill Nyhof (2008 and '09) and Chelsy Kimes in 2010. Coastal has also had nine CoSIDA Aca-demic All-District selections over the past seven seasons, getting at least one honoree each year. This past season Kimes and Megan Bick-ford made the prestigious squad. This past season, Kimes was also named first team All-Big South Conference for the third consecutive year, as well as being selected to the Big South All-Academic Team. She was additionally named Coastal Carolina's Female Athlete of the Year after being a three-time, first team All-Big South selection and a first team ESPN Academic All-District member, as well as being named to the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award top 30 list. During her tenure, she has also been named Big South Volleyball Player of the Year as well as Big South Conference Tournament MVP. Kimes ranks second in school history in service aces, while becoming the all-time leader in kills and total at-

tacks at Coastal Carolina University. Named to the Big South All-Freshman Team was Meghan Laffin after she was tabbed Big South Freshman of the Week twice. During the 2009 season Coastal Carolina won the 2009 Big South Tournament, defeating Liberty 3-1 in the Championship match. The Chants entered the tournament as a four seed. Coastal advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history after having gone in 1996 and 1998, while Bauer went for the first time as a head coach. The Chanticleers finished the 2009 season 20-14 overall and 10-6 in the Big South. Coastal Carolina defeated regular-season champion UNC Asheville in all three meetings during the season, including a 3-0 win in the Big South Tournament semifinals. Kimes was named first team All-Big South and Big South Tournament MVP, while teammates Megan Bickford and Sierra Livesay joined Kimes on the All-Tournament Team. Livesay also earned Big South Freshman of the Year accolades. Receiving the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the second straight season was Nyhof, who also earned Academic All-American honors. In 2008, Bauer's team posted a 27-9 overall record, her most successful season since being named head coach and finished as the regular season co-Champion in the Big South with a 13-3 record. The team advanced to the finals of the Big South tournament where they fell to Liberty. Nyhof earned the 2008 Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, and sophomore Kimes

was named first team All-Big South. During the summer of 2008, Bauer traveled to Europe with "Bring It Promotions" to help coach a USA volleyball team. The team was comprised of collegiate players from several Division I schools. During her trip, her team had the opportunity to play the Switzerland National Team, where they split the series 1-1. Bauer's team finished their European tour in Croatia with a 12-team tournament between American and European squads. The team dominated the tournament and captured the gold medal. Under the direction of Bauer, the Chanticleers recorded a 15-17 overall record during the 2007 season. In the Big South, Coastal finished fourth with a 6-6 record and advanced to the Big South semifinals. Rookie standout Bickford was named to the Big South All-Conference and All-Freshman team, and was one of two players to appear in every game of the season. Fellow freshman Kimes was also selected to the Big South All-Freshman team, while Nyhof was named to the All-Academic team.

In 2006, Bauer saw her team play a program-record 128 games in 33 matches. The Chants posted a 10-23 overall record and tied for sixth in the Big South with a 4-10 record. Two players, senior Kristin Rinne and freshman Nyhof, appeared in all 128 games, while senior Laura Obert became Coastal’s all-time leader in block assists with 334. Both Nyhof and Obert earned Big South honors as Nyhof was selected to the All-Freshman Team and Obert was named Academic All-Conference. Obert also received her second Academic All-District Second Team honor. In 2005, Bauer’s team was 19-12 overall and finished Big South play with a record of 12-2, Coastal Carolina’s best re-cord in the Big South since going 13-1 in 1996. The squad earned the program’s highest-ever NCAA Division I national ranking, finishing the season ranked 98th and in the top one-third for all Division I volleyball programs. Bauer received her second Big South Coach of the Year honor. Meanwhile, senior Katherine Jensen-Spencer collected Big South Player of the Year for her work on the court and Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year and Academic All-District Second Team accolades for her work in the classroom. Also under Bauer’s guidance, Jensen-Spencer and classmate Jennifer Hampton were named to the All-Big South First Team while Brett Starbuck earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. From 2002-2004, Bauer's teams posted three consecutive 21-win seasons, as well as a pair of 11-3 conference records in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, Bauer had two first team All-Conference awardees in Jennifer Hampton and Jensen-Spencer. Off the court, Obert and Jensen-Spencer became the second Coastal Carolina volleyball players to be named Aca-demic All-District. In 2003, five Chanticleers earned spots on the All-Conference Teams. The 2002 season saw Hampton and senior Jeanne Lambert selected as the Big South's Freshman of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively. Lambert, who was side-lined during the previous season with an injury, also earned First Team All-Conference status with classmate Katie Knutson, while Hampton was a Second Team All-Conference and an All-Freshman Team selection. Without Lambert in 2001, the Chanticleers struggled to a 10-20 overall record and a sixth place Big South finish at 5-9. Despite the injuries, Coastal Carolina ranked fifth in the nation in digs, including Knutson's ninth-place national ranking in individual digs per game. After posting a 14-17 record in Bauer's inaugural season of 1999, Coastal improved to 18-14 in 2000. Coastal Carolina's improvement was noticeable throughout the Big South Conference as it improved from 6-8 to 11-3. The 2000 squad also set a school record for consecutive victories with a 12-match winning streak late in the season. As a result, Bauer received her first Big South Coach of the Year honor. That season, Bauer also saw Lambert earn Coastal's first Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Academic All-District and Academic All-America honors. Additionally, Lambert was selected at the Big South's Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A 1993 graduate of The Ohio State University, Bauer received her Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and hearing science. As a member of the Buckeyes' volleyball squad, she helped Ohio State capture the 1990 Big Ten Conference Championship. In addition to playing at Ohio State, Bauer also served as the head coach for the men's volleyball club team and served as the coordinator of several Ohio State University Women's Volleyball Camps throughout Ohio. Following graduation from Ohio State, the Buffalo, N.Y. native coached the varsity volleyball program at Nardin Academy Catholic High School from 1993 to 1995. During this same time, Bauer completed her master's work in audiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She was also selected as the head coach of the Western New York Senior All-Stars in 1994 and coached the Cheetah Volleyball Club’s 16 and under and 18 and under USVBA teams for two years. Bauer then served as the assistant women’s volleyball coach at East Tennessee State University from 1995 to 1998. During her final year of graduate school, she served as the head girls’ basketball and softball coach at University High School at East Tennessee State University. Bauer earned a Master’s of Arts in Teaching degree from East Tennessee State in 1999. Bauer has been honored many times as a player over the years. She was a member of the 1996 Sports Performance USVBA squad and participated in the Empire State Games six times. Bauer was also a member of the Junior Olympic program for three years and earned 12 varsity letters while a prep star at Cardinal O’Hara High School. Bauer was inducted into the Cardinal O’Hara in-augural Hall of Fame Oct. 14, 2005. Bauer and her husband, Kevin Smith, reside in Myrtle Beach.

During his collegiate playing career, Short was a four-year letterwinner at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., from 2000-2003. He was also a three-year team captain and a standout setter, where he led his team to three straight Division III national championship titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003. He graduated as the school's all-time career leader in assists (4,728), and his 12.88 assists per game are second all-time at Springfield. Short also amassed 434 digs, 69 service aces, 178 block as-sists and 188 total blocks in 367 games during his career. Short was an Eastern Intercollegiate Vol-leyball Association Division III first-team honoree in 2003 and a second-team selection in 2000 and 2002. His knowledge of the game, dedication to long hours of hard work and enthusiasm for our sport will be a welcomed addition to our volleyball program."

Prior to Coastal Carolina, Yates spent the past three years at TCA Volleyball Club Inc. where he coached 12-18 year olds. Yates helped coach the TCA Black Team to a ninth place finish at the AAU National Championship in the 16 Open division in 2010.

On Tuesday, October 26 the Coastal Caroli-na University volleyball team defeated con-ference opponent Winthrop University 3-1 during the Chanticleers annual DIG PINK Breast Cancer Awareness Rally in Kimbel Arena. Each October the Chanticleers raise money for breast cancer research. More than 700 fans came out to the match.

Prior to the start of the match the Coastal Carolina volleyball team celebrated DIG PINK night by showing their support for local survivors. The team helped raise money for the Side-Out Foundation and a local breast cancer organization in the Con-way/Myrtle Beach area by hosting a bake sale on Monday. The Chanticleers also raised money by having a silent auction and a bank drive at the DIG PINK match.

The Chanticleers wore pink warm-ups and pink socks, while the first 200 fans received pink shirts.

Coastal Carolina will once again host Winthrop University dur-ing the 2011 season in their annual DIG PINK Breast Cancer Awareness Rally on Friday, October, 28 at Kimbel Arena.

In her fifth year at the helm for the Coastal Carolina volleyball team, head coach Tammi McCaudy-Lee led the squad to its first Big South Tournament Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tourna-ment in 1996. McCaudy-Lee received Big South Coach of the Year honors for her success during the 1996 season. During the beginning of the season, the team started off with a school record six wins in a row, including four 3-0 shutouts. Coastal battled through some losses, but at the start of conference play, the

team registered a then-school record 10-game win streak which was broken up by a 3-2 loss at UNC Greensboro. The UNC Greensboro match was the only loss for the Chants for the remainder of the season until the NCAA Tournament. Coastal posted a 13-1 record in league action, the best in the Big South. In the Big South Tournament, the squad recorded 3-0 shutout victories against Charleston Southern and Liberty to advance to the champi-onship game. In the final match, the Chanticleers downed UMBC 3-0 to claim its first Big South Tournament title. Roberta Croteau was named tournament MVP and selected to the Big South All-Tournament Team for her play during the tornament. Croteau also earned Big South Volleyball Player of the Year and Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. Coastal had two athletes earn All-Big South honors in Croteau on the First Team and Emma Prowse on the Second Team. Before traveling to Atlanta, Ga., for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the team hosted University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in a play-in game, which the Chants won 3-0. The road ended for Coastal in Atlanta as Coastal fell 3-0 to Georgia Tech. The 1996 team holds several records in the Coastal Carolina all-time record book. The squad ranks first on the all-time list for service aces with 296 and second in kills with 1,832. In the individual season records, Croteau ranks fifth in kills with 480 during the 1996 season.

Roberta Croteau was named Big South Vol-leyball Player of the Year in 1996 and was

selected to the First Team All-Conference. She also earned Big South Tournament MVP honors.

Despite a 0-6 record to start the season, the 1998 volleyball team rebounded to post a 23-13 record to close the season and capture its second Big South Tour-nament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. The squad rolled off win streaks of five games on four sepa-rate occasions throughout the season. With a 6-4 record and head coach Tammi McCau-dy-Lee’s last season, Coastal Carolina secured the No. 3

seed in the Big South Tournament. During the first two days of competi-tion, the Chants picked up a 3-0 shutout over Charleston Southern and a 3-1 victory over Radford. Coastal advanced to the tournament final to take on regular season champion Liberty, where they defeated the Flames

3-1 to earn the school’s second Big South Tournament title in three years. Autumn Staub and Emilie Welch were named Big South Tournament co-MVP. Staub was also a First Team All-Big South honoree while Jelena Mirkovic was select-ed to the All-Big South Second Team. The team traveled across the coun-try to Provo, Utah for the first round of the tournament to face Brigham Young. Coastal dropped its first round match to the Cougars 3-0, ending the team’s tour-nament run and five-game win streak. The 1998 team holds several records in the Chanticleer all-time record book. The squad ranks third all-time in season statistics in both digs with 2,148 and kills with 1,775. In the individual record book, Welch sits third in assists in a season with 1,347 during the 1998 season.

As the old adage goes, “It’s not how you start the season, but how you finish it,” and that could not be more true for the 2009 squad. The Chanticleers had a tough road, going 7-7 out of conference and 10-6 in the Big South to finish fourth in the league. However, the turning point in the season came on Senior Night after the team lost a disappointing match to Presbyte-

rian. At the conclusion of the match, the team went into the locker room and talked about what needed to be changed and where they were going to go from there. After a lot of tears and frustration, the squad emerged as a new team with one goal--to win the Big South Tournament and go to the NCAA Tourna-ment. Looking like a new team, Coastal faced its first test in the opening round of the Big South Tournament as it beat High Point 3-2 in a tough five-set match. The Chants played spoiler for the third time of the season, defeating regu-lar season champion UNC Asheville in all three meetings of the season, including a 3-0 win in the Big South semifinals to advance to the tour-nament finals. In a rematch of the 2008 cham-pionship match, the squad defeated Liberty 3-1 to earn the school’s third Big South Tournament championship. Junior Chelsy Kimes was named Big South Tournament MVP after registering 50 kills in three matches, including 12 kills in one set against UNC Asheville. Kimes was also se-lected to the All-Tournament team along with ju-nior Megan Bickford. Freshman Sierra Livesay was named Big South Freshman of the Year and senior Jill Nyhof earned Big South Scholar-Ath-lete of the Year for the second year in a row as well as being selected to the ESPN The MagazineAcademic All-America Second Team. Coastal Carolina was sent to Nebraska to play the Cornhuskers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 3-0.

Chelsy Kimes was named Big South Tournament MVP after registering 50 kills in three matches, including 12 kills in one set against UNC Asheville. She also was named to the All-Big South

First Team for the second year in a row.
