RIBEIRO AND UZO NAMED TO NATIONAL TEAMS OF THE WEEK Midfielder Pedro Ribeiro was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, while defender Uchenna Uzo earned national recognition from College Soccer News.

Ribeiro turned in his first multi-goal game of the season against Elon in the Chanti-cleers’ First Round match. The Brazilian scored each of his two goals in the form of long-range blasts from outside the 18-yard box. Ribeiro nearly added his third goal of the tournament against Wake Forest as he beat his defender inside the box; however, his shot attempt sailed just high of the goal. The goals were the first for Ribeiro in four career NCAA Tournament games.

Uzo was assigned arguably the toughest task in all of college soccer against Elon. The Nigerian was responsible for man-marking the nation’s leading goal scorer in the Phoe-nix’s Chris Thomas. Uzo shut down Thomas, who entered the match with 23 goals, al-lowing the All-American only a single shot attempt. Uzo then led the Chanticleer back-line against Wake Forest’s 16th-ranked attack, holding the Demon Deacons to a single goal. The sophomore also prevented Wake Forest’s Sam Okoli, who ranks 28th in the NCAA with 11 goals, from finding the back of the net.

Ribeiro and Uzo represent the 12th and 13th national team of the week recipients for the Chanticleers this season.

GOLDEN GOAL EQUALS SWEET 16 FOR CHANTICLEERS Ninety minutes of soccer was not enough for Coastal Carolina and Wake Forest in their NCAA Second Round matchup, but 98 minutes and nine seconds proved to be enough as Jakub Stourac found the golden goal to lift the Chanticleers to a 2-1 victory.

With the score deadlocked at 1-1 eight minutes into the extra session, Coastal inter-cepted a Wake Forest pass around midfield and played the ball ahead to senior forward Robby Joe Daniels. Daniels took a couple of touches into the box and ripped a shot that was blocked by a Demon Deacon defender. Stourac, who was following the play through the middle of the field, tracked down the ball and slotted it home for the first game-winning goal of his career.

Wake Forest struck first in the contest as Michael Gamble found the back of the Chanti-cleer net in the fourth minute of play. The Demon Deacon’s Sam Okoli whipped a cross into the box that appeared to be collected by Coastal’s Mark Petrus; however, the ball bounced off Petrus’ chest and into open space in front of the goal. Gamble collected the rebound and easily hammered it into the net for his eighth goal of the season.

Justin Portillo finally put the Chanticleers on the scoreboard at the 64:53 mark of play, leveling the game at 1-all. Ashton Bennett was fouled just outside the 18-yard box, setting up a direct free kick by Portillo. Portillo stood over the ball took two steps and launched an in-swinger that finished just inside the left upper 90. The goal was Porti-llo’s fourth of the season.

CHANTS ADVANCE WITH SHUTOUT OF ELON For the second straight season Coastal Carolina was charged with hosting Elon in the NCAA Tournament First Round and for the second straight season the Chanticleers elim-inated the visiting Phoenix. This time Coastal shutout Elon en route to a 3-0 victory. Pe-dro Ribeiro turned in his first multi-goal game of the season and Matt Risher added an insurance goal as Coastal blanked Elon to earn its 12th shutout of the season. Moreover, the clean sheet was the first in an NCAA Tournament game for the Chanticleers since the

2003 squad held North Carolina scoreless in a 3-0 second-round victory.

THIS IS OUR HOUSE Since moving to their current home in 2002, the Chanticleers are 70-19-6 (.768) at the CCU Soccer Field. Moreover, Coastal holds an impressive 31-4-4 (.846) home record since the 2009 campaign, including a 11-0-1 record this season.

CHANTICLEERS UPSET IN BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP Winthrop scored a trio of second-half goals, including two in the final 3:03 of play to pull off an improbable 3-2 upset over eighth nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina in the Big South Championship game on Nov. 11 at the Bryan Park Soccer Complex in Greens-boro, N.C. The Chants received first-half goals from Ashton Bennett and Uchenna Uzo to take a 2-nil lead into the half. However, the score would not hold up as Winthrop scored less than 10 minutes into the second half to cut the Coastal lead to one. Winthrop’s Patrick Barnes then knotted the score with 3:03 to play and the Eagles’ Mason Lavallet sealed the comeback win with 1:10 remaining on the clock.

14 AND 5 Coastal Carolina made the program’s 14th appearance in the Big South Championship match. The Chants are 10-4 in conference title bouts, winning four of their last six ap-pearances. The 2012 Championship match also marked the fifth time Coastal and Win-throp squared off for the league title. The Chants are now 2-3 against the Eagles in the championship game.

COASTAL DOWNS HIGH POINT TO ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Top-seeded Coastal Carolina received a pair of first-half goals from Pedro Ribeiro and Ricky Garbanzo and held strong in the second half to defeat fifth-seeded High Point 2-1 in the semifinal round of the Big South Tournament. Coastal’s defensive players came up big in the late stages of the game, making several key saves to prevent High Point from knotting the score.

12 STRAIGHT Coastal appeared in its 12th straight Big South Tournament semifinal contest, holding a 8-4 record in those games. Overall it is the Chants’ 20th semifinal round appearance, the most in conference history. The Chants’ downed fifth-seed High Point 2-1 to advance to the 2012 championship match.

CHANTS ADVANCE TO SEMIFINAL WITH 5-0 BLANKING OF PC Coastal Carolina advanced to the semifinal round of the 2012 Big South Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Presbyterian College on Nov. 6. The top-seeded Chants were too much for the eighth-seed Blue Hose to handle. Coastal dominated every facet of the game and held a 37-1 shot advantage at the final whistle. Coastal received goals from Ricky Garbazno, Sean McCormick, Ashton Bennett, Henrik Robstad and Matt Risher. Coastal held PC without a shot on goal and no corner attempts.

#11 Chanticleer sophomore Ricky Garbanzo has been on an absolute tear over the last two weeks. The stout 5-foot-7 forward has scored seven goals, including four game winners in the past six games. Garbanzo started his scoring streak with his first career hat trick at South Carolina on Oct. 24. He has scored once in each of Coastal’s games from Oct. 24 - Nov. 9.

CHANTICLEERS COLLECT 14 ALL-BIG SOUTH HONORS The No. 8 nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team garnered a total of 14 All-Big South honors, including the league’s attacking, defensive and coach of the year honors, released by the conference office Monday, Nov. 5. Head coach Shaun Docking was named Big South Coach of the Year, Ashton Bennett received Attacking Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year went to Kjartan Sigurdsson. Joining Ben-nett and Sigurdsson on the first team were Ricky Garbanzo, Pedro Ribeiro and Justin Portillo. Defenders Henrik Robstad and Uchenna Uzo along with netminder Federico Bertele earned second team all-conference honors, while Jhamie Hyde and Tevin Skyers earned all-freshman plaudits. WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER?The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system.

A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

IN THE POLLS The 2012 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers set a school record this season in the national poll rankings. The Chanticleers ranked as high as eighth by the National Soccer Coaches Asso-ciation of America (NSCAA), the official poll recognized by the NCAA, and Soccer Times. The No. 8 ranking surpasses the program’s previous high of No. 9 in 2003, 2011 and three weeks this season. The Chants have been ranked in the top 25 in each of the five major polls in each week this season.

IN THE NCAA STATISTICAL RANKINGS After leading the nation in goals per game (3.0) and total goals (66) last season, the Chanticleers are once again back on top of the rankings this season. Coastal ranks first in the NCAA in goals (62), assists (61) and total points (185), while holding the second spot with a 2.58 goals per game average. In addition, the Chants’ defensive unit ranks seventh in goals against average (0.68) and eighth in shutout percentage (0.50). Coast-al ranks fourth in the country with a .875 winning percentage.

ONE OF TWO IN THE NATION Coastal Carolina finished its second consecutive Big South regular season with a perfect 10-0-0 record. Coastal and Akron (7-0-0, Mid-American) are the only two teams in the entire NCAA to finish their conference regular season with a perfect, unblemished mark.

IF HE SCORES, THEY WILL FALL Senior striker Ashton Bennett has netted goals in 24 of 46 games in a Chanticleer uni-form. In all, the Chants are a staggering 22-2 when the Jamaican striker finds the back of the net, including 9-1 this season. The only defeats were at the hands of eventual national champion North Carolina in the Second Round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament and to Winthrop in the 2012 Big South Championship game.

NO. 1 SEED FOR THE SIXTH TIME In clinching the Big South regular season championship with a 4-1 win at Radford on Oct. 27, the Chanticleers have guaranteed themselves the No. 1 seed in the forthcoming Big South Tournament. This marks the second consecutive and sixth overall time the Chants have entered the championship tournament with top seeding. Due to a change in the tournament format this season, the Chants played host to eighth-seeded Presby-terian College in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the CCU Soccer Field. The Chants easily cruised by the Blue Hose, 5-0, to advance to the semifinal round.

GARBANZO NETS FIRST CAREER HAT TRICK AND TRIO OF PLAUDITSRicky Garbanzo, a Rock Hill, S.C., native put in four goals and dished out one assist to lead the Chanticleers to a 2-0 record last week, including a win over Radford to clinch the Big South regular season championship. At South Carolina on Oct. 24, he netted all three scores in Coastal’s 3-2 win, marking his first career hat trick. After South Carolina took the early lead, Garbanzo kicked in his first score of the contest in the 47th minute and followed with another goal two minutes later. He closed out the hat trick in the 53rd minute. Three days later at Radford, he scored in the 72nd as he finished an Ashton Bennett through ball. He then assisted on Bennett’s goal in the 76th minute to give Coastal Carolina the 4-1 win. For his efforts, he was named to the Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News national teams of the week and earned his first Big South Attacking Player of the Week nod this season.

THE HONORS CONTINUE Coastal Carolina men’s soccer backline mates Henrik Robstad, Jhamie Hyde, Uchenna Uzo and Shawn McLaws have been named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week for the week ending Oct. 21. In addition, Uzo was singled out by College Soc-cer News as a member of its weekly national team and by the Big South Conference as the Defensive Player of the Week. The quartet joins forwards Ashton Bennett and Ricky Garbanzo as Chanticleers to be honored as members of Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week this season. Robstad, Hyde, Uzo and McLaws combined to help post the team’s third consecutive shutout and ninth of the season.

STREAKING Coastal put together a 15-game winning and 19-game unbeaten streaks this season.

The Chants fell at then thrid-ranked Charlotte in the second game of the season on Aug. 27 and did not taste defeat again until Nov. 11 when the squad fell to Winthrop in the big South Championship match. During the winning streak the Chants outscored their opponents by a staggering 44-8 margin, including a 33-3 margin in Big South play. Through the 19 game unbeaten streak Coastal outscored its opponents 51-11.

STAYING PERFECT IN BIG SOUTH PLAY With its 1-nil win over High Point on Friday, Nov. 2, Coastal extended its current Big South Conference regular season winning streak to 19 games dating back to the start of the 2011 season (20 game unbeaten streak, 18-0-1, dating back to the final game of the 2010 season). In posting a perfect 9-0-0 conference mark en route to a regular season championship in 2011 and a 10-0-0 record this season, the current Chants have easily surpassed their previous Big South regular season winning streak of 12 games that was established from the 2006-08 seasons.

BENNETT BEING BENNETT After a somewhat slow start to the season Ashton Bennett has returned to himself. He has found the back of the net 11 times in his last 12 outings, including a stretch of a pair of goals in three consecutive games from Oct. 6-13. Bennett currently leads the Big South and ranks tied for fifth in the NCAA in total goals with 1. He ranks fourth in the country in total points (39), 18th in goals per game (0.68) and 10th in points per game (1.77). With his scoring strike against Winthrop on Nov. 11, the Clarendon, Jamaica, native moved into sole possession of sixth-place in the CCU record book with 38 career goals in only 44 games played.

SPREADING THE JOY OF GOALS Last season the Chanticleers led the NCAA with 66 goals in 22 games with Ashton Ben-nett (23) and Pedro Ribeiro (9) recording 32 of the scoring strikes. This season Coastal has netted 57 goals in 22 games to again lead the nation. However, unlike the 2011 campaign 13 different Chants have scored, and while Bennett again leads the team with his 15 goals he is one of 11 Chanticleers to score two or more goals this season. Sophomore Ricky Garbanzo ranks second on the team with a career-high 13 counters followed by senior Robby Joe Daniels sophomore Uchenna Uzo and freshman Tevin Sky-ers with four each.

GIVE IT YOUR BEST SHOT … IF YOU CAN GET ONE OFF To date the Chanticleers have posted a combined 11 team shutouts (tying for third on the CCU single season list) and an impressive .787 save percentage. Goalkeeper Federi-co Bertele has recorded 6.3 of those shutouts and ranks 20th in the NCAA with a .755 goals against average. However, Bertele and the other keepers’ work has been limited this season due to the outstanding play of the Chants’ backline. The Coastal defensive unit led by All-American candidates Kjartan Sigurdsson and Uchenna Uzo has limited opponents to a mere 208 shot attempts (8.66 per game) and only 83 on goal (3.45 per game). Moreover, Coastal’s high-pressure defense has held four opponents (Florida Atlantic, UNC Asheville, VMI and Presbyterian College) without a shot on frame.

THE WINNING GENERAL Coastal Carolina’s 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro was the 200th for Chanticleer head coach Shaun Docking. Docking, who has collected 188 of his 200 wins at CCU, became the 46th active NCAA Division I coach to achieve the career milestone. Docking, who became Coastal’s all-time wins leader with victory 167 over UNC Ashville on Oct. 15, 2011, entered the season as the 28th winningest active coach in the NCAA by percent-age (.633) and 47th by total victories (194-107-9).

BENNETT NAMED SENIOR CLASS FINALIST As for Bennett, the Chants’ standout was named one of 10 men’s soccer finalists for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award for student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The winner will be selected by a combination of media, coaches and fan votes, which can be made online at www.seniorCLASSaward.com. The results of the voting will be announced during the College Cup championships Dec. 7-9 in Hoover, Ala.
