NEW Purebred Dairy Cattle Association Score Card
There’s a new showmanship scorecard this show season. Taking into account how judges actually evaluate during showmanship, the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association has improved its showmanship scorecard. At World Dairy Expo, the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA) voted to revise the PDCA Showmanship Evaluation Card. At the most recent meeting, the association noted, “We realized that judges are not going into the ring with a ‘score’ in their head. Instead, they check items off as the showmanship competition progresses. Among these items, there are things you can do correctly and
things you do incorrectly; mostly “yes or no” questions.
What you need to know: The most important changes exhibitors should note are a step away from the traditional point breakdowns and the reclassification of some discriminations. Evaluation criteria are no longer grouped into the three major categories with point values: appearance of animal, appearance of exhibitor, and showing animal in the ring. In place of the factors to be evaluated and points breakdown, showmanship evaluations now will be categorized on three severities of discrimination for the exhibitor and animal: slight, moderate, and severe. Compliance with the criteria evaluated in these
categories will be based on the judge’s interpretation of the degree to which a problem was present.
Prefacing the new scorecard is a statement that covers the previous condition and grooming of the animal categories: “It is important that participants in showmanship ensure that their animal is in proper body condition and growth based on the age of the animal. Horns are to be removed at an appropriate age to provide a safer environment for the leadsperson. Feet should be properly trimmed to promote ease of movement for the animal. These practices will show
good husbandry skills of the participant as well as a positive image for the dairy industry.”
Retrieved from http://www.hoards.com/12mar10-2011-new-PDCA-showmanship-scorecard
Pam and Nicole Selz-Pralle will be presenting on the new PDCA score card. Your animals are welcome so you can review the new guidelines and practice with your animals. This will take place on SUNDAY, JULY 17 at 7:00 p.m. Location needs
to be determined yet but likely in the Greenwood Area.
When judging showmanship, the PDCA now recommends the following levels of discrimination, with some expectations being age
appropriate.
May not impact placings—A slight discrimination has little effect on final placing unless the class is extremely close and the
contestants are of near equal merit. It is possible that a slight discrimination may not change the final placing.
Slight discriminations—exhibitor / animal
The judge’s discretion—Moderate discriminations impact a final placing to the degree to which the problem was present. The judge must
make the decision and place the exhibitor according to his or her best judgment.
Moderate discriminations—exhibitor
Bottom of the class—Serious discriminations will have a significant effect on the final placing. Usually exhibitors demonstrating one of these behaviors will be placed in the lower half of the class. A general guideline is to place the animal about three four ths of the
way down with adjustment up or down depending on the quality of other contestants.
Serious discrimination—exhibitor
The new scorecard also addresses how judges should evaluate toplines—Topline is groomed, doesn’t distract from the animal’s
overall appearance, and conforms to the guidelines of the PDCA Show Ring Code of Ethics
The PDCA states the following regarding toplines in the Show Ring Code of Ethics, under the heading grooming and preparation: “The maximum allowable length of naturally growing hair anywhere on the topline is not to exceed 1 inch. Exhibitors will be r equired to comply with this rule before the animal is allowed to enter the ring.” Awareness and avoidance of moderate to severe discriminations, along with practice and hard work at home, can help you place at the top of your showmanship class.

Clark County Fair Is Just Around The Corner and We Need Your Help!
Clark County Fair is August 10 – 14 this year and things are coming together. However we are in need of volunteers to help at the fair. What does a volunteer do?
They could check in items on Wednesday and Thursday, they could help with judging by scribing (Wednesday – Saturday), they could also help place and arrange exhibits once they are judged
(Wednesday – Friday). There are many things a volunteer could do to help!
Volunteers receive a free day pass into the fair on the day(s) they would work and a free meal ticket. If you would have questions before or during the fair we are always there to help.
If you would be interested in volunteering at the fair this year please contact Chris Hollar at 715-743-5121 / [email protected] by June 15.
HCE DAIRY BAR VOLUNTEERS (YOUTH & ADULTS) ARE NEEDED AT CLARK COUNTY FAIR
August 11 through August 14 HCE stands for Home and Community Education, which many of you might know better as Extension Homemakers. Maybe you have a mom, grandmother, or aunt who belong or previously belonged to this organization. Our main goal of earning money at the Dairy Bar is to award THREE $500.00 scholarships to Clark County residents who are attending a college or technical school. After one year of education beyond high school, all Clark County residents are invited to apply. The applications can be obtained at the UW-Extension Office. Pick one up today if you qualify!
The Dairy Bar is open during the Clark County Fair, Thursday August 11th through Sunday August 14th. It takes many people to help with all the customers throughout the four days. If you have a friend that you'd like to bring along to work on your shift, even if not a 4-H member, they are more than welcome to sign up also.
Our HCE Dairy Bar is connected with the 4-H Food Stand. Last year we had many fantastic young volunteers come in and help. Either they were making hand dipped cones or scooping the ice cream into ice cream buckets for malts and shakes which are so popular. That was a life saver when we had orders of 5-6 malts at a time. We couldn't do it without your help!
Why would you like to come help us??? Besides all of us HCE members loving to work with the youth and meeting our fantastic volunteers, we do let you have your choice of an ice cream treat before you leave - it could be one of our double ice cream cones, a float, malt, or shake! Also if you do decide to apply for our HCE Scholarship, we'll give you extra points when adding up the score of who will receive the scholarship for their fall tuition.
4-H parents or grandparents—we'd love to offer this invitation to you also! Everyone will get a free admission to get into the fair the day you volunteer if you don't already have a season pass. Our shifts are about 4 hours and you'd have the remainder of the day to enjoy the fair.
I always compare being a member of HCE to my growing up in 4-H. I'd love to share with you what HCE is all about and invite you to join one of our clubs. Why should the kids have all the fun??? We have a State Conference which is very enjoyable and very educational. This September our State HCE Conference will be in Eau Claire. It's 1-3 day event of tours, learning sessions, meeting new friends and great food. Remember 4-H Camp? Well - HCE has many opportunities to continue learning too at any age! We have held many sewing events throughout this past year.
If you are interested in working a shift at the Dairy Bar, please call 715-743-6629 or my cell 715-937-2324. I will try to work around the most convenient time you are able to help. I'd love to hear from you!!! It's not too early to start signing up! Thanks so much! Cindy Craig, Clark County HCE Marketing and Membership Chairperson
