Cognitive Science
Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of cognition, brain and behavior, embracing philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology. In the last four decades, Cognitive Science has established itself as a truly interdisciplinary science, employing qualitatively different research tools such as, the experimental practices of psychology, argument analysis of philosophy, formal methods used to develop computational models, and a variety of paradigms from neuroscience (single-cell studies, lesions, neuroimaging). Given the current growing interest in cognitive science, it is expected that this field of study will become even more interdisciplinary. It has also been accepted as one of the four pillars of knowledge of the twenty first century along with nano-, bio-, and information technology. Cognitive Science is critically important in various areas like Education, Mental health, Social behavior and Technological Development.
IIT Gandhinagar currently offers Doctoral and Masters (MSc) degrees in Cognitive Science. We also offer Minor in Cognitive Science for undergraduate students
About the Discipline
The objective of the Master’s program is to offer students with different backgrounds, breadth of knowledge and research techniques in a wide range of areas in Cognitive Science. This would be facilitated by richer appreciation of cognitive functions (learning, reasoning, thinking, planning, creativity, decision making etc.), research methods and experimental techniques (behavioral, psychophysical, psychophysiological, neuroscientific, and computational). This program would also emphasize principles for designing effective systems to support individuals, groups, and organizations
M.Sc Program
The Cognitive Science laboratory consists of facilities that enable basic and advanced level research in Cognitive Psychology, Affective Computing, Cognitive Neuroscience, Behavioral Economics, and Experimental Philosophy. The facility consists of a collection of laboratories equipped with behavioural data collection cubicles, an eye tracker, a wireless physiology-based data acquisition system, Virtual Reality-based programming platform and will be supplemented in the future with an 256 channel EEG system.
