Welcome to Week 4 of Term 3! This year Coleambally Central School will again participate in the Tell Them from Me online surveys. The Tell Them From Me student, parent and teacher surveys can be used to evaluate the achievements of the previous school year and will be used to gather evidence and baseline data for the 2018-2020 school planning cycle. They provide valid and reliable evidence of strengths and areas for improvement from students’ perspectives in critical aspects of school performance such as social and institutional engagement, emotional health and the quality of instruction. The surveys also provide insights into students’ perceptions about the learning climate, student-student and student-teacher relationships and their own academic success. These surveys will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. The survey is completed on-line and staff will not be able to identify individual students or parents from their responses. Only students in Year 4 to Year 12 will participate in the survey and parents may choose for their child to ‘opt out’ of the survey. Please see the attached information and withdrawal form to parents from the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation if you do not want your child to participate. I would encourage as many parents and members of the community as possible to engage in the surveys when the parent survey window ‘opens’ and the information is provided to the community. Education Week This Friday Coleambally Central School will celebrate Education Week. Activities will commence at 12.00 pm with a short welcome ceremony in the School Hall, followed by encore performances from the Primary Talent Quest students. 2018 Stage 5/6 Subject Selection Night Yesterday parents of students entering Stage 5 and Stage 6 in 2018 received their invitations to the annual Subject Selection Information Sessions, which will be held in the School Library next Monday, 14 August 2017. Two sessions will be held, Stage 5 6.00 – 7.00 pm and Stage 6 7.00 - 8.00 pm. Parents and students currently in Year 10 and 11 are encouraged to attend these important sessions regarding Stage 6 requirements and courses on offer for the 2018 Higher School Certificate. Secondary staff will be in attendance at both sessions and there will be time for parents and students to discuss subject choices with them. I would encourage everyone to attend. Athlete’s Foot This term we received a cheque for $300 from the Athlete’s Foot in Griffith as part of the Athlete’s Foot School Rewards Program, which aims to financially support and assist local schools at a community level. As a participating school we receive a $5 credit for any shoe purchased at The Athlete’s Foot store in Griffith by a student, family member or friend. Please ensure the school’s name is mentioned during the purchase. We thank the Athlete’s Foot for their kind donation and look forward to their continuing support. Cypress View Lodge Survey The Board of Cypress View Lodge is inviting the community to have its say on the future of Cypress View Lodge. They have invited community members to respond via a short survey, which is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/C7JYRKF. Your participation and input is very important to the board. Year 12 Fundraiser A reminder that this Friday, 11 August 2017 Year 12 will undertake their first fundraising activity for the year, a ‘Double Denim, Joggers and Jeans’ Day. I’m looking forward to some ‘tragic’ looks, myself included. Gold coin donation. Until next week,

COWS CREATE CAREERS

Last Monday, 9 stage 5 & 6 Agriculture students went to Peter and Jane Middlebrook’s dairy farm at

Finley. Peter explained to the students the setup of the farm and how he had changed it since

purchasing it in 2002. We then went into the milking shed to see cows being milked on the 44 cow

rotary dairy. Peter showed us the computer setup that monitors each individual cow and the data that

he collects. We then went out to see the cows on the feed pad, were he provides them with a

complete ration prior to going into the paddock to graze before coming back in for the afternoon

milking. After milking was complete we headed to the bobby calves. Everyone thought that they were

so cute. We watch them being fed and learnt more about how to care for the calves we were bringing

back. Now Pete and James are a highlight for many of the students. The stage 5 class are enjoying

feeding them twice a day, mucking out their pen, monitoring growth and breaking them in.

I would like to say a very big thank you to Peter and Jane for sharing their time and knowledge with

the students and for donating the calves to the school. They are going to be a wonderful teaching

resource. I would also like to thank R&B for donating ID tags for the calves and Brett Hay for donating

the jug we use to make up the calves milk.

P&C

Our week 3 big-write topic “Giants” saw students across the primary school draw on wonderful vocabulary, powerful opening sentences and paragraphs, and strong imagery. The increasing use of similes and metaphors in writing pieces is a welcome treat, as is the emergence of a strong “Writer’s Voice.” The Giant roared and roared because he wanted to eat the people. He went to school to find me to play basketball but everyone got scared and ran away. The bell went and the big giant went home. Thomas DeMamiel Fe-Fi-Fo. Who’s enormous underwear is hanging off my bottom? Songkran Burton Year 1 Have you ever wondered where my Giant lives? In my bedroom? In the garage? In the chookpen? In the shed? No... He lives under my bed! Hayley Pound Year 2 “The giant … looked like a monkey with a tail like a bear.” Alex Pound Year 2/3 Have you ever wonder what it would be like to look at the world from the clouds? I know what it feels like; it’s amazing but really scary too. The world is a giant’s play set. He is the one who makes the wind, the rain, the night and the light. Alana Jones Year 4 The boom gates came down on both sides.

Chloe Evans Year 5/6

Hurtling through the air, I suddenly realised that this Gustoff fellow wasn’t very friendly.

Tell Them From Me student survey: Information and consent form for parents and carers

8 August 2017

Dear Parents and Carers

This term, Coleambally Central School is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.

Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password. Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will be suppressed. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours. Once the surveys are completed by students, reports are prepared and in most cases are available to schools within three business days.

This survey will help our school better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will help the school identify what works to improve student outcomes.

Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped.

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to school by Friday, 18 August 2017.

More information about the survey and the research is available in English on the CESE website: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents
