Summarising is an essential skill to develop as it has so many uses and benefits for the learner. Summarising helps with researching, gathering and presenting information and finding key words and phrases in order to gain a deeper understanding of the text or concept. Our students are definitely learning to perfect the skill of summarising with consistent practice. Summarising is also used with our other literacy skills, Predicting and Visualising, as part of our Super 7 literacy focus 28 th June 2016 strategies. When we return to school next term our new focus will be Self-Monitoring. Self-monitoring is being aware of your own thinking when you read. A really important part of self-monitoring is knowing when you have stopped understanding what you have read. It may be that you are not sure of what a word, sentence or even a paragraph means. If you can recognise when this happens, you can use a strategy such as rereading to fix it. K-10 Reports Students from Kindergarten to Year 10 received their reports on Monday 27 th June. If your child was absent from school, reports can be collected from the office from Tuesday 28 th June. Years 7-10 Parent-Teacher Interviews Wednesday 29 th June Secondary parents are encouraged to attend our Parent/Teacher Interview afternoon on Wednesday 29 th June in the library from 3.50 pm until 6.00pm. A booking sheet has been sent home this week for parents to list what teachers you wish to meet with. Teacher feedback is essential to continuous improvement and parents can really support their child’s learning by working with our teachers to ensure our students are supported and challenged with their learning. Principal’s Report I have been looking at student work samples over the last week and am very pleased to see many examples of students using their summarising skills across K-10 in a wide variety of subjects. Summarising is also used with our other literacy skills, Predicting and Visualising, as part of our Super 7 literacy focus

28th June 2016 strategies.

Junior Talent Show Thursday 30th June On Thursday, June 30th, there will be a Junior Talent Show in the hall, starting at 12:30pm. This show will be in lieu of the regular Primary Assembly. The students, who will be performing, have been notified of their success last Friday, after the last two auditions were completed. Notes have been sent home. Parents of the performers and others, who are interested, are welcome to attend the show on June 30th. There will be a 50c entry fee for each member of the audience. This is to raise funds for the Bear Cottage charity which assists sick children with life-limiting conditions. Thank you for your support with our Talent Show.

End of Term Assembly 10am Friday 1st July On Friday we conclude the term with a special assembly to acknowledge our students for their academic, sporting, cultural and vocational successes and outstanding attendance and citizenship over the last semester. Parents and Grandparents are most welcome to attend.

Stage 6 2017/2018 Subject Selections Students in Years 10 and 11 received their Stage 6 Subject Selection Sheet and Information Booklet last week outlining the subjects on offer for study in 2017 and for our current Year 10 students, 2018 subjects to consider. 2018 subjects will be based on what subjects run in 2017 and what teachers are available to deliver subjects and could change from the current list distributed to students this week. An information evening will be held Monday Week 4 next term to assist in selecting subjects for 2017 and 2018. There will be opportunities to discuss the subject selection process, what types of subjects students need to complete in order to earn the award of the Higher School Certificate and to gain an ATAR for university entrance during Year Adviser meetings. Students will also be able to ask questions and seek advice.

P&C Fundraiser: 5c Challenge The anticipation builds for the last week of 5¢ Challenge. Primary classrooms have been a hive of activity with this fundraiser and 5c coins have been flowing in fast. Secondary students need to really step it up this week if they are to snatch the class reward from our younger students at this stage Kinder are coming 1st, Year 1/2 are in 2nd place and year 3 are in third. Thank you for your support. Overseas Excursion to Vietnam Update Thanks to all the parents and students who have provided the required excursion documents in to the office and made their first payment by the due date. It certainly makes my job easier with organisation and meeting deadlines with our tour company. If there are any issues please let me know as soon as possible. Next term we will commence group meeting during lunch to go over aspects of the excursion, including links to our curriculum, to prepare for this very exciting journey. A timetable of meeting times for students will be out early next term. It is expected that students participate in these meetings to develop their knowledge and confidence and to build our team of travellers before departure.

Vietnam Fun Facts The local currency of Vietnam is the Dong. Currently one Australian dollar (1 AUD) is equal to 16,692.1 Vietnamese Dong.

Mathematics 7-10 mathematics classes will be doing topic tests on Thursday. Year 7 - Directed number Year 8 - Rates, ratios, scale drawing and statistics Stage 5 - Measurement and statistics Stage 5 Enrichment - Trigonometry and Functions and Graphs Riverina Rock Camp Rock Camp can be described in one word, AMAZING. This year over 20 schools were involved from all over the state. There were around 53 students involved in the week of music. On day 1 we were sorted into bands and vocalists and then we all were given songs to learn. Everyone I would say worked hard on their songs both in the bands and in the vocals. On day 3, it was time for recordings. We were able to learn what it was like in a studio and how most things

worked. It was pretty nerve wracking but once we had finished our song that was recorded and put onto a CD we were relieved. Apart from all the work we did, we also met a lot of new and talented people, who at the end of camp we didn’t want to leave. The tutors who helped us were very smart and helped us learn a lot. At the end of camp, I don’t think there was one person who wanted to leave. Rock Camp was an amazing experience that I would gladly go back to for as long as I can. On Thursday morning ABC Radio came to interview some students and record a song for Radio. Josie Moore
