Welcome to the Options Process

Dear Year 8 Students, Parents and Carers Birchwood is now into its fifth year of a highly successful three year curriculum. We want to be clear with you about why we follow this approach. Our reasons are based on powerful national research which shows that students who spend time gaining a deep, rich learning experience will achieve better results in their time at school and enjoy the experience far more. Our students at the school have also shown improved results and through student voice they all speak positively of this curriculum model. We also feel that on studying the intake of students, you as Year 8 students are more than capable of accessing the requirements of Key Stage 4 and that your teachers have planned a staged approach that will mean that no-one is left behind as you make your way to Year 11. We have plans that if you are 'flying' through the course we will support you in advancing your learning at a rate that is suitable for you. In this booklet we have aimed to set out as much information, advice and guidance as we feel is relevant, we have also included the web address links for all subjects to allow you to access and download specifications and student guides for all the many courses that are available. On Tuesday 27 January we will have our Options Evening and we hope that you attend and take advantage of the presentations on the evening and of the question and answer sessions hosted by the subject teachers to find out more. The information, advice and guidance does not stop here. We will be offering taster lessons for Year 8 during curriculum time, which will allow students to get a feel for the subject and its requirements. Following this we have a parents’ evening on Tuesday 3 March, where you can not only check progress, but also ask about any issues you may have. Furthermore, as you are hopefully aware, you can contact us by e-mail, ‘phone or in person. The deadline for applications is Friday 13 March. We have purposefully built in this long period of time as we want you to be happy with the choices you make and feel confident that you have made the right decisions. We hope you enjoy the evening and remember; if you are not sure, ask! Dr C Ingate Headteacher

Dear Year 8 Students These are important times for you. You are about to start courses which will prepare you for the most important examinations in your school career. Being successful in your exams will open doors for you throughout the rest of your life and will give future employers a clear picture of your strengths and abilities.

Therefore, the decisions you make now are really important, and could affect your future choices. So what do you need to do? Talk to your teachers, your tutors, your parents, older brothers and sisters and students who are already doing the courses you are interested in. Think, not only about which subjects you want to do, but which combination of subjects might be best for you. There are some subjects you have to continue but you still have the opportunity to choose a range of others, some which are predominantly practical, some which involve plenty of ICT and others which involve reading, writing and research. Decide which would be best for you. Avoid thinking about what your friends may be choosing – this is about you and your future. You will have plenty of time to see your friends outside of lessons and, besides which, lessons are for learning. Obviously, you will be considering subjects you enjoy but avoid choosing them just because of the teacher who is teaching that subject. All sorts of changes can happen in a school and, despite what you think at the moment, that teacher might not be the one who ends up teaching you. Above all, remember that this is about you. This is the first time you have been given a real choice in which subjects you study at school. Think carefully, choose wisely.

Pathways explained The Key Stage 4 curriculum is designed to offer a personalised Key Stage 4 route that is deep and rich not only in content but also in the Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills. In order to support your choice we offer the following guidance. Pathway 1 and 2 are ostensibly the same with the only difference being whether triple or double science is offered. The pathways are designed for those: who are targeted, are working within, or forecast in the level 4/5+ range. Students within Pathway 1 will be offered the full range of options but should be looking at a more academic qualification offer with regards to the technology areas, this is to fully support the progression to Post 16 learning at either A Level or equivalent Level 3 courses, thus enabling appropriate stretch and challenge throughout Key Stage 4. The Pathway 2 selection is designed for those: who are targeted, are working within, or forecast in the level 4+ range. Students within Pathway 2 will be offered the full range of options but may like to look at a mix of academic and technical qualifications offered with regards to the technology areas. This is to fully support the progression to Post 16 learning at either A Level or equivalent technical Level 3 courses. Thus enabling appropriate stretch and challenge throughout Key Stage 4 Pathway 1 and 2 complete the same application form. Pathway 3 is designed for those: who are targeted, are working within, or forecast in the level 3+ range. Students within Pathway 3 will be offered a range of options that are focussed on technical qualifications. This is to fully support the progression to Post 16 technical learning for Level 2/3 courses and embed employability skills thus enabling appropriate stretch and challenge throughout Key Stage 4. All the Pathways will have the PSHE entitlement delivered through Tutor Time, Humanities, PE or as planned learning experiences. See the back pages for the range of options within each Pathway.

Course Title Exam Board Drama GCSE (Years 10 & 11) Edexcel

Course Description The course is divided into three clear units, all of which are heavily practical: Unit One: is a study of performance techniques in which students create practical work based on a stimulus. Students are internally assessed on the practical work they complete in lessons and also on a written portfolio which reflects both their progress and how they have used the stimulus to create drama. Course Title Exam Board Film Studies GCSE WJEC

Course Description Film is widely acknowledged as the major art form of the 20th century and today film continues to be an important part of most people’s cultural experience. This specification is designed to build upon students’ own experience of film – as consumers and creators – and to encourage recognition of the complexity of this experience within an increasingly globalised, interconnected environment. Starting with the familiar, the specification allows students to study films and the ways in which they are experienced, the importance of visual representation in today’s global society and the place film has in communicating ideas, attitudes and cultural beliefs, both now and in the past. The specification approaches this through three inter-related study areas, which act as a framework for studying and creating film:

the ‘language’ of film

the organisations which produce, distribute and exhibit them

the audiences for film

The specification is designed to integrate internally assessed work with externally assessed work so that active learning can be encouraged and learning is constantly being reinforced through a variety of assessment. The specification therefore allows an introduction to filmmaking, the film industry and the impact film representations have on audience’s cultural identities. Type of Assessment External Assessment: Written Examinations: 50% Paper 1: Exploring Film (1 hour 30 minutes, 30%) Four compulsory questions focusing on one film genre. These questions will assess knowledge and understanding of film language and key industry and audience issues. The film genre will be set by the examination board. Paper 2: Exploring Film outside Hollywood (1 hour, 20%) Three compulsory questions on one film produced outside Hollywood, chosen from a list prescribed by the awarding body. Questions will be based on:

characters, narratives, themes and issues in the film chosen

the way people, places, events and issues are represented in the film

a creative question involving individual responses to the film (e.g. reviews, blogs, website entries) Areas of study: Students study one film produced outside Hollywood from a prescribed list in terms of:

the characters and narrative of the film chosen

the issues raised by the chosen film

the representation of people, places, events and issues

how film language contributes to those representations Controlled Assessment: 50% Exploring and Creating Four pieces of linked work, designed to draw on the students’ personal experiences of consuming and responding to film: 1 Film Exploration (focusing on the production, distribution and exhibition of films and textually

analysing a key sequence from a film of the students’ choice).

2 Pitch and preproduction (creating ideas for a new film and an accompanying marketing campaign).

3 Production (students film and edit a short sequence which creates tension and/or atmosphere).

4 Evaluative Analysis (highlighting what has been learnt about the main areas of film and how it relates to the preproduction and production).

Career and Progression Opportunities AS/A2 Media Studies and AS/A2 Film Studies. The specification provides an excellent foundation for candidates intending to pursue careers in journalism, TV, film, photography, film and TV editing. Link to Syllabus http://www.wjec.co.uk

Course Title Exam Board French GCSE OCR

Course Description The French GCSE is a dynamic, highly motivating course which strives to enthuse students and enable them to communicate effectively in the language. The new GCSE course, beginning in September 2016, will cover topics within themes such as ‘Identity and Culture’, ‘Local, National, International areas of interest’ and ‘Current and future study and employment’.

Each topic provides contexts where students learn about France and other French speaking communities, developing awareness and understanding. The course is designed to challenge, enthuse and motivate students but at the same time provide them with a suitable basis for further study and practical use of the language, in all four key skills.

At Birchwood in Year 9, students will focus on grammar within topics and on building their own, personal grammar reference book. In addition to this, they will make a film in stages throughout the year in French. It is a collaborative project with other class members and in association with Routes into Languages, at Anglia Ruskin University. It is of huge benefit to students in terms of confidence building and language proficiency. It all culminates in a Birchwood Oscars Evening in July.

From then on, students will continue to work towards their GCSE qualification, using French in all four skills effectively in a variety of situations. The examined skills are in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Students enjoy working independently, in pairs or small groups. They also benefit from contact time with the French language assistant wherever possible.

In October of Year 9, there is an opportunity to take part in a study visit to Le Touquet and a further chance to visit Paris in July of Year 10. These trips add to the enrichment of our programme.

Type of Assessment Students will be assessed in all four skills. There are terminal examinations (from May in Year 11) in all skills. Each skill makes up 25% of the qualification thus: Listening – 25% Reading – 25% Speaking – 25% Writing – 25% There are two tiers of entry: Foundation (Grades 1-5) or Higher (Grades 4 – 9). The target language is required throughout. Terminal examinations replace Controlled Assessments yet students will have regular opportunities to practise all skills throughout the three year course. Special Requirements Students who are taking courses leading to this qualification at Key Stage 4 should normally have followed the corresponding subject at Key Stage 3. Career and Progression Opportunities Without doubt a GCSE in French should prepare students to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices. Many universities require that candidates have at least a GCSE in a language to be able to access their courses. Many job opportunities are enhanced with a GCSE in French. Course Title Exam Board Spanish GCSE OCR

Course Description The Spanish GCSE is a dynamic, highly motivating course which strives to enthuse students and enable them to communicate effectively in the language. The new GCSE course, beginning in September 2016, will cover topics within themes such as ‘Identity and Culture’, ‘Local, National, International areas of interest’ and ‘Current and future study and employment’.

Each topic provides contexts where students learn about Spain and other Spanish speaking communities, developing awareness and understanding. The course is designed to challenge, enthuse and motivate students but at the same time provide them with a suitable basis for further study and practical use of the language, in all four key skills.

At Birchwood in Year 9, students will focus on grammar within topics and on building their own, personal grammar reference book. In addition to this, they will make a film in stages throughout the year in Spanish. It is a collaborative project with other class members and in association with Routes into Languages, at Anglia Ruskin University. It is of huge benefit to students in terms of confidence building and language proficiency. It all culminates in a Birchwood Oscars Evening in July.

From then on, students will continue to work towards their GCSE qualification, using Spanish in all four skills effectively in a variety of situations. The examined skills are in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Students enjoy working independently, in pairs or small groups. They also benefit from contact time with the Spanish language assistant wherever possible.

In Year 10, students will have the opportunity to take part in a study visit to Spain. This trip really does add to the enrichment of our programme.

Career and Progression Opportunities Without doubt a GCSE in Spanish should prepare students to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices. Many universities require that candidates have at least a GCSE in a language to be able to access their courses. Many job opportunities are enhanced with a GCSE in Spanish.
