ABOUT THE DATA

METRO INS IGHT

The  data  for  this  report  comes  from  a  variety  of  publically  available  sources  such  as  the  Census  Bureau  and  Bureau  of  Labor  Sta3s3cs.  This  report  is  intended  to  give  a  brief  overview  of  the  general  demographics  and  economy  of  the  Aus3n-‐Round  Rock-‐San  Marcos  Metropolitan  Area  as  defined  in  2012.

Most  of  the  data  is  updated  at  least  annually.  Some  of  the  employment  data  sources  do  update  on  a  monthly  basis,  but  to  avoid  seasonal  fluctua3ons,    the  data  used  here  is  the  most  current  annual  data.

Although  Metro  Aus3n  takes  up  over  4,000  square  miles,  the  bulk  of  the  popula3on  is  fairly  concentrated  along  the  I-‐35  corridor  in  central  Travis  County.  The  popula3on  densi3es  are  greatest  in  the  downtown  area  and  around  the  University  of  Texas  campus.

Educational Attainment The  Aus3n  Metro  can  boast  one  of  the  highest  levels  of  educa3onal  a,ainment  in  the  country  with  over  40  percent  of  its  popula3on  25  and  over  having  at  least  a  bachelor’s  degree.  The  presence  of  the  University  of  Texas  undoubtedly  helps  keep  this  figure  rela3vely  high.

ECONOMY

Loca3on  quo3ents  measure  the  level  of  specializa3on  a  region  has  in  a  given  industry.  A  loca3on  quo3ent  over  1  indicates  that  the  region  specializes  in  this  industry  rela3ve  to  the  country  and  likely  exports  this  good  or  service.  A  loca3on  quo3ent  less  than  1  indicates  the  region  does  not  specialize  in  that  industry  rela3ve  to  the  country.

Being  the  State  Capitol  for  the  second  largest  state  in  the  country,  it  is  no  surprise  that  State  Government  has  the  highest  loca3on  quo3ent  in  Aus3n  at  2.3.    Aus3n’s  reputa3on  as  a  high  tech  center  is  evident  with  a  high  Informa3on  loca3on  quo3ent  of  1.3.

Economy The  Aus3n  economy  saw  the  greatest  employment  gains  in  the  Health,  Professional  Business  Services  and  leisure-‐Hospitality  industries.  The  na3onal  decline  in  manufacturing  was  felt  in  Aus3n  as  well  as  the  region  lost  38  percent  of  it’s  manufacturing  jobs  between  2000  and  2012.

The  Capitol  of  Texas  is  on  the  rise.  It  is  the  third  fastest  growing  metro  (out  of  all  metros  with  a  popula3on  of  1  million  or  greater)  with  one  of  the  highest  levels  of  educa3onal  a,ainment.  It  is  developing  in  to  a  hi-‐tech  hub  that  is  drawing  new  businesses  and  employees.  The  economy  also  has  a  very  solid  founda3on  with  UT  and  the  State  of  Texas  providing  steady  employment.  Aus3n  has  risen  rapidly  in  recent  decades  to  major  metropolitan  area  status.  It    appears  that  it  will  remain  there  for  a  long  3me  to  come.
