    Christmas You Missed

This July, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA kickedoff a new teen program, Leaders in Training. Thisleadership development program gave military teensthe opportunity to develop skills and gain experiencethat will be beneficial once they enter the workforce.Teens engaged in training modules on team work, conflict resolution, risk management, interview skills, professionalism, goal setting, and ownership. Thesemodules where supplemented with professional outingto the ARTS (A Reason to Survive) Center, Sony, and

Final thoughts...From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens:

Yes, we knew it was July and yes, we know Christmas is celebrated in December, but, ifa family is not together on December 25th because of military deployment, Christmas

is not in December, it is in July! We love Christmas in July and enjoying it with themany families who could not celebrate in December. Check out the pictures in this is-sue, see the smiles and feel the excitement experienced by the over 700 attendees. Welove The Christmas You Missed and appreciate all the volunteers who helped with thesetup and the cleanup and helped us make this happen. A special Thank You to Toysfor Tots for ensuring all the children received Christmas Presents. Thank you Santa,Thank you media for your coverage of the event, thank you everyone for bringing suchhappiness to all who attended.. Also a veryspecial thank you to Marta Passerelli andthe Murphy Canyon Youth Center Staff. This event would not happen without theiroutstanding support. They are the behind the scene Santa Elves.

We also want to thank title sponsor Barona Resort and Casino, along with Waste Man-

agement, Toys for Tots, KSON, the Spiva Family Foundation, Souplantation, LincolnMilitary Housing, OMBAC, the Armed Services Family Support fund at the RanchoSanta Fe Foundation, Horse Wisdom, Cox, Raytheon, Pacific Marine Credit Union, Ro-tary Club 33, the Padres, San Diego DJ and Karaoke, GEICO, Marta Passerelli and theMurphy Canyon Youth Center, along with dozens of other donors and volunteers fortheir tremendous support to make this event possible...Thinking back a few years ago when I was a teenager, I remember times when life

was a challenge and I always remember the sage advise from my parents and friendswho became solid mentors helping to guide me through those foundation buildingtimes. Teenage years bring many challenges as one starts the transition into adulthood

I was most impressed by the teens who took a giant step in that journey to participatein our pilot Leaders in Training Program. The initial step was , Im sure, a bit diffi-cult, but the participants were most impressive as they took on the challenge each dayto learn and practice new skills. I was also impressed by members of our board andmembers of the community who gave of their time to assist in such events by conduct-ing mock job interviews and sharing their experiences with the participants. A terrificprogram...Im not sure everyone knows that we currently have close to 10,000 program partici-pants each month. With only 26 staff, we could not do it without our many volunteers.

A big Bravo Zulu this month to the super volunteers from the USS CARL VINSON,

Geico Insurance, La Jolla Republican Women Federation, the Southern CaliforniaSoaring Academyand the Holy Smokers for helping us Make it Happen for so manypeople...In closing, please help us ensure that every service member and his or her family isaware of our programs and knows that our mission is to assist them through our 40+programs and special events. Help us get the word out. We stand ready to assist.

    KEEP CHARGIN!
