Open Enrollment for UMass Lowell’s NewEngland Youth Wind Ensembles Enrollment is open. Rehearsals are scheduled betweenJan. 24–May 12, 2011. The Junior Ensemble meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:45–6 p.m. The Senior Ensemble meets Mondays, 6:45–9 p.m.Durgin Concert HallParticipants: $125 tuition plus $25 registration fee.

Enrollment is open to students in grades 6-9 and 9-12. The15-week program culminates in concerts that are free andopen to the public. First rehearsal in Durgin Concert Hall oftwo new world premiere compositions commissioned byArtistic Director and Conductor Deb Huber from RobertSheldon and James Curnow. These internationally recognizedwind-band composers will write original works for the NewEngland Junior Wind Ensemble (Sheldon) and the SeniorWind Ensemble (Curnow), which will be premiered at UMassLowell. Under the baton of UMass Lowell faculty, studentsare exposed to commissioned works, perform with soloistsand are coached by college musicians. Emphasis is placed oneducational and artistic development as well as ensembletechnique. Repertoire is chosen from diverse periods andstyles adjusted to meet the proficiency of participants.

Jieun Shin’s work combines fragmenteddetails of the IKEA assembly instructionswith patterns and images from traditionalKorean folk art design motifs. The culturally specific references gradually become unidentifiable and “buoyant”within the work.

This exhibition features books and printsfrom books made by students in PomonaCollege’s “Photo as Document” course.Taught by Pomona College professorSheila Pinkel, the course uses documentaryphotography as a tool to teach studentshow to visually interpret current social issues and topics. Students learn to makeimage/text works and synthesize them intoa printed class book. This process providesthe students with valuable experience in photography, interview techniques and content analysis.

“Inter-Glacial Free TradeAgency:” A Site-Specific KineticInstallation Lynn Richardson Exhibition: Nov. 8–Dec. 2 Reception & Artist Talk: Nov. 9, 3–5 p.m.

With “Inter-Glacial Free Trade Agency,”Lynn Richardson examines the relation-ship between governments and corpora-tions through the guise of a trade show.Richardson focuses on the end productsbeing marketed to the public, specificallyfashionable survival gear and equipment,in the event we are thrust back into an iceage as a result of global warming. Objectsand other items are branded with the samelogo, convincing the viewer that in the“new world” there is only one choice.

Two of our major initiatives this year are the expandedKerouac Literary Festival (Sept. 30 through Oct. 3), whichtakes the annual Kerouac celebration to a new level as thecity’s literary and book festival. Author and English Depart-ment faculty member Andre Dubus III, the new Nancy L.Donahue Professor of the Arts, has collaborated with us onthe planning and invited several renowned authors to participate. Next spring we will launch the first “LowellCreates!” festival, a multi-arts event on campus and indowntown Lowell that will make April “Arts Month” atUMass Lowell. Watch for details about the many programsthat will be offered.
