TheRiverHawksareflyingsouthforthe spring and beginning Feb. 25, UMass Lowell softball’s 2011 season willofficiallybeunderway. The squad, selected sixth in the Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, is the conference’s firstteamtohitthefieldthis season with a trip to Eckerd’s Triton Spring Invitational. First on the docket is a noon clip against Nova Southeastern tomorrow, followed by a 2:30 p.m. game against host-school Eckerd. Also on the trip will be games against Palm Beach Atlantic, Saint Leo, Lynn and Tampa, spanning Friday through Sun-day. The team is coming off a 23-27 record in 2010 with an even 15-15 record in conference play. Pitcher Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) and infielderKristaMacKenzie(Ipswich,Mass.) were honored by the NE-10 as Second Team All-Conference and All-Rookie selections, respectively. The River Hawks more than doubled their win total from 2009 and earned a No. 7 seed in the NE-10 Tournament before beingknockedoutinthefirstround. Second year head coach Sean Cotter says his squad is excited to get going early and watch all their hard work in the off-season translate to a successful 2011 campaign. The River Hawks boast much more experience than last year’s team, which graduated just one senior, Kate-lyn Hebert (Lowell, Mass.). This year’s teamisfilledwith10upperclassmen,a quartet of sophomores and its only two freshmen were also members of theUMassLowellfieldhockeyteamthis fall, so they are well-aware of the commitment and dedication necessary to be a collegiate student-athlete.

2011 oUtLooK “The kids that are with us have truly bought into UMass Lowell softball. It’s

been really exciting to watch their growth, on andoffthefield, overthelast year,” Cotter said. “As a team, we are men-tally stronger and have improved offensively and defensively over the last 12 months. “It starts with our senior class,” Cotter said. “Heather Ross (Waltham, Mass.), Hilary Hopkins (Poway, Calif.) andRachelSchafler(Floral Park, N.Y.), who have all gotten sig-

nificantlybettersinceMayoflastyear.Hopkins might be our most improved player during that time.

Pitching As far as pitching is concerned, the River Hawks return their ace in Boris, whofinishedhersophomoreyearwitha 2.93 ERA and 10-12 record with 38 appearances and 21 starts. The Gard-ner, Mass. native also broke the school record with 12 homeruns on the year and batted .333 on the year with a .707 slugging percentage. Schaflerwillalsoseesignificanttimein the circle, coming off 19 relief appear-ances in 2010. She amassed a 5.60 ERA and 0-1 record with 14 strikeouts in 25.0 innings. “Obviously we have less arms this year, but sometimes the old adage ‘less is more,’ applies,” said Cotter. “Boris is ready to be one of the top pitchers in the NE-10andSchaflerispreparedtohavethe best season of her career.” Experienced catchers Lindsi Pan-arelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Kristie Kyzer (Boxborough, Mass.) also return to the lineup this year, helping to anchor the pitchers throughout the season.

MacKenize led the team with a .413 batting average, while Guy, Ross and Mahoney were the only three River Hawks to see action in every contest last year. Mahoney bat-ted .355 while Guy and Ross ranked second and third on the team with a combined 26 stolen bases. Also returning are catcher Katie Mazure (Burlington,Mass.)andoutfieldersAsh-ley Daniels (Medford, Mass.), Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) who Cotter says are three of the tougher kids on the squad. “They are multidimensional, which has been a theme with our team,” Cotter said. “But all three are so much better than they were a year ago, it’s scary.”

Newcomers Joining the team this year are fresh-men Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.) and Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.), who werethefirsttwofreshmanrecruitsCotter inked at UMass Lowell. Effertz is a versatile player that can switch hit, playbothinfieldandtheoutfield, whileFerraroisaquick, athleticinfielder. “Effertz and Ferraro have been ex-actly what we thought they would be,” Cotter said. “They are very athletic ball players who can play a lot of spots. Theygiveusdepthatalloftheinfield

bury, Mass.) were both four-year standouts that own multiple offensive program records for theUMassLowellfieldhockey team. Enaire can alsoplayintheinfieldandtheoutfield, whileMacywill add some more depth to the pitching rotation for the River Hawks. “Macy and Enaire have been pleasant surprises who have improved quickly in our system,” Cotter said. “The best part is all four of these new additions were part of the 2010 Na-tional Champion UMass Lowellfieldhockeyteam,

so they all know how to win.”

Getting Started on the Right Foot Starting the season before the rest of their NE-10 foes, the River Hawks will have the advantage of making adjust-ments and molding themselves before theyevenflydownsouthforthesecondtime, making their annual pilgrimage to Florida over spring break to play 12 games. In addition to the Triton Invi-tational, the squad will have 18 games under their belt before returning north for games at Post and Felician at the end of March. After that, it’s straight into the com-petitive NE-10 schedule, beginning with Stonehill, Saint Anselm and Merrimack all at home. The UMass Lowell schedule is full this year, stocked with talented teams and healthy competition. The squad will be put to the test early and is prepared for the long season ahead.

Sean Cotter, a native of Norwich, Conn., was named head coach of the UMass Lowell softball program on August 4, 2009 and has guided the River Hawks to a 23-27 record overall, as well as an all-time coaching record of 310-213 in his career. In the season prior to Cotter's arrival, the squad played to a 10-31-1 record in 2009, and his arrival on River View Field saw them more than double their win total in 2010. The River Hawks battled to an even 15-15 in Northeast-10 Conference action and earned a trip to the 2010 Tournament. Inhisfirstseason,hecoachedP/DPElyssaBoristotheNE-10All-Conference Second Team and 2B Krista MacKenzie to the All-Rookie Team, as well. Cotter also hit the 300 career-win milestone on April 13,

2010 against Saint Michael's. He has also spearheaded the Trick-or-Treat for Charity initiative at UMass Lowell, organizing the large-scale community outreach project that sees his team go door-to-door in the Greater Lowell community, collecting canned goods for a local food bank and candy to send overseas to the US Troops abroad. Cotter, who had previously spent the last 10 years as head coach at Plattsburgh State and one season prior as head coach at Post (CT) University, replaced Harry Sauter, who retired after 15 years and a 367-330-4 record with the River Hawks. Through his 11 years of head coaching experi-ence, Cotter has compiled an overall record of 287-186. Cotter was named the head coach at Plattsburgh in 2000 and compiled an overall record of 254-172 which included 10 straight appearances in the State University of New York Athletic Confer-ence (SUNYAC) Tournament, two SUNYAC regular season titles, two NCAA Tournament appear-ances, and one SUNYAC Tournament championship. Cotter enjoyed perhaps his best season in 2007 when he guided the Cardinals to a 37-14 overall record (16-4 SUNYAC, second), the NCAA Division III Northeast Region Championship and a fourth-place showing at the Division III Softball World Series. CotterwasnamedtheNFCANortheastRegionCoachoftheYearandafinalistforNFCADivi-sion II Coach of the Year honors. That season followed a memorable 2006 campaign in which Plattsburgh went 40-9 overall and 19-1 in the SUNYAC, winning both the regular season and tournament titles. During the year, the Cardinals enjoyed a 23-game winning streak, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Northeast Region championship game and capped the year at No. 12 in the NFCA Division III poll. In 2008, Cotter led the Cardinals to a 30-13 record - their third straight 30-plus win season - and a share of the SUNYAC regular season title. Just three years after taking over the program in 2002, Cotter led Plattsburgh to a 31-15 clip and an appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Tourna-ment championship game. Prior to moving on to Plattsburgh, Cotter was the head coach at Post University for the 1999 season, where he set a school record for wins in a season (33-16) and guided the Eagles to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament championship game. At the conclusion of the year, he was tabbed to coach in the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association (NEISCA) All-Star Game. In addition, Cotter has been tabbed by Coast-to-Coast Athletics to coach various high school/college all-star teams in Australia (2001, 2002, 2004) and Hawaii (2003). Cotter boasts an impressive coaching tree, exemplifying his former players' and staff's passion for the game. Three former players are now head college coaches: Stephanie Zweig at Plattsburgh State, Jamie Prudhomme at Union College and Tracy Garofalo at Post University, while former as-sistant Casey Price is now the head Coach at Oswego State. During his junior year at the University of Connecticut (from where he graduated in '97), Cotter was served as head coach at E.O. Smith H.S., where he compiled an overall record of 54-12. In 1998, he guided E.O. Smith to a 23-2 mark, the North Central Connecticut Conference tournament andregularseasonchampionshipsandasemifinalappearanceintheConnecticutStateClass`L'Tournamentsemifinal. Cotter has also been active within the sport, serving as a past president of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) softball committee. He has also served on several committees within the NFCA, including the Board of Directors, All-America and Rankings committees as well as the NCAA Division III Northeast Region Rankings Committee. Along with his coaching duties, Cotter was an adjunct professor of sports psychology as well as the game administrator for women's and men's basketball games. Cotter holds a Two-Star Master CoachlicensebytheNFCAandiscurrentlyworkingtowardshisfour-starcertificate.Heisalsopursuing his masters degree in counseling psychology at the University of Connecticut.
