1.THE COMIC: A NARRATIVE MEDIA IN ESSENCE -Definition: A comic is a group of images called vignettes. Images in comic are drawn and organized to narrate a simple action or a long story. The comic can show

- different moments of an action and - what happens before and after something.

This is why a comic is a narrative media. -Origins The comic was born at the end of the 19th century in the American press as a short and illustrated strip telling a story. Nowadays, weekend magazines that come with the newspaper keep offering illustrated strips or short comics. 2. ELEMENTS -Vignette: It is a piece of paper with a rectangular shape and limited by straight black lines which represents a moment or a small part of the total story. It is then, the shortest narrative form in the comic. Images and texts are the main components to create the vignette.

-Space and movement representation: - Shot :size of the space. This space is fictitious and displays the action that is narrated. The frame is the type of space represented in a vignette. We can find different sizes of the frame in connection with the human figure: -Extreme long shot:

-Stablishing shot (general view): human figures take up a very small space in the vignette. -Long shot: figures take the whole length of the vignette.

-Extreme close up : shows a small element such as an eye in a face or a finger from a hand. All these elements come from an important media which was developed in the 20th Century, the Cinema.

-Text box: point of view (angles of the camera): The framed space can have different points of view, as for example: -Eye level (horizontal): figures are represented as seen from a normal point of view. -High angle: figures are represented from a high point of view in respect to the normal height of the point of view.

3. KINETIC RESOURCES Give us the sensation of movement. Comics are not able to represent real movement as we can see on TV or in a movie at a Cinema, so that´s why comics use kinetic resources. -Kinetic lines: for example those lines that we can find behind someone running away. Separation of movement: consists of drawing the different parts that exist in a simple movement.

4. TEXTS: -Balloons: It is a “rounded” space containing the written text. Balloons have a small part pointing at the character who is supposed to be speaking.

-Text box: Generally is the rectangular space containing the texts. Text boxes have two functions: a) Anchorage function: when text makes clear what is said. b) Commutative function: When text makes the narration go forward (flash forward) in time, bringing the narration to the future. Also when text makes the narration go back in time (flash back) locating the narration in the past. This is what we call a temporal change. Furthermore, the narration can be moved into a different place. This is what we call a spatial change.

-Voices in off: these are verbal expressions that are supposed to come from hidden characters or someone who we can´t see, such as the voice coming from a radio or the voice of someone speaking from the telephone. -Onomatopoeia: It is a written expression which tries to imitate different sounds for example the sound from a phone call or the sound from a drop of water falling down. Comics are not able to display the rich sonorous universe of the everyday, but they can enrich a comic´s expressive and communicative possibilities by using all these resources.
