1. POINTS What is a point? A point is the most basic element in an image.

It is used in technical drawing as a geometric element. It is used in artistic drawing as a graphic and expressive element.

Conceptually, a point is the intersection of two straight lines. Graphic point:

The graphic point can create forms and can have different shapes (circle, cross, asterisk, triangle, irregular…). They can also have different colors and sizes.

When we enlarge a point it becomes a plane. The point appears in many artists´ works. (Gallery of images: Puntillismo, Kandinsky etc).

2. LINES What is a line? A line is an infinite succession of points.

Like a point, we use technical drawing tools to make geometrical lines. We make different graphic lines by hand, using different instruments like brushes, pens, pencils, etc.

The main purpose of a line is to outline shapes. Conceptually, a line is a point in movement. Types of lines: There are many types of lines The two types of simple lines are:

Curved lines: points in the line change direction. Straight lines: points in the line follow the same direction.

Both of these types of lines are made in one stroke.

Other types of lines:

Broken line or zigzag: several straight lines together. Wavy line: several curved lines together. Mixed line: straight and curved lines together.

All of these are complex lines made of different fragments of lines. Lines can be in different positions: -Vertical: These lines represent balance and growth. -Horizontal: These lines represent calm, peace and stability. -Inclined: These lines represent instability and movement. Finally, the line is an element with many different possibilities of expression because its different positions can suggest different meanings. Lines appear in many artists´ works. 3. PLANE What is a plane?

A plane is a surface with two dimensions: height and width. A plane extends infinitely, but we give limits to it. By limiting planes, we get plane forms.

The main purpose of a plane is to create three-dimensional forms.

Conceptually, a plane is a line in movement in a different direction. Plain forms:

Geometric: These are made following Maths laws. Basic geometric plane forms are the circle, square and triangle.

Organic: These are made following natural laws and have got infinite appearances because of differences in colour and texture.

Planes appear in many artists´ works. (Gallery ok images: Cubism).

-Spot:

- It’s an aspect of the plane. - A spot can represent an irregular plane shape. - Usually the shape of a spot is due to fate.

Spots have got infinite possibilities for expression. However, they have also got a subjective character and suggest only a few different interpretations. 4. TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS We need different techniques, tools and materials to create images. Each material has got its own characteristics. Techniques show us an artist’s personality. Many artists use the same techniques but have different results.

Chinese ink Ink is a material mainly used to create lines. It is very versatile, and can be used with many different techniques. Every ink has a different level of color and fluidity. Some are soluble in water, and others can be water resistant when dry. Surface Normally papers of different thickness or watercolour paper. Tools Brushes, feathers, pens. Techniques Linear: consists of making lines. Plotted (tramada): criss-crossing lines. Watered (aguada): using ink diluted in water. A bit of history Chinese ink is a Chinese invention for writing with ink and a sharp pointed needle. This practice was common in China and India since antiquity. The ink is made of many different things, including black carbon that comes from burned bones, tar, pitch and other substances. The traditional Chinese method of making ink is to grind a mixture of hide blue, black carbon, lampblack and bone black pigment with a pestle and mortar. Then the mixture is poured into a ceramic dish. Nowadays, we buy ink that is ready-to-use from a shop. Gouache This is a type of paint consisting of pigment suspended in water. Gouache is different from watercolour because:

1. The ratio of pigment to water is much higher. 2. An additional white pigment such as chalk is also present. 3. Gum Arabia is present as a binding agent.



This makes gouache heavier and more opaque than watercolour. Surface Paper, cardboard, any type. Tools Brushes mainly. Technique Paint can be diluted or applied straight from the bottle.
