e sun shone vividly that Saturday. A er four full weeks of 16 hour work days, and the nal production hours of the Spring April/May issue underway, something felt di erent. Blue sky and u y clouds still out at 7pm, I boiled water for rice pasta with last night’s le over tomato sauce. I poured myself a treat of chocolate almond milk over ice in a wine glass, in preparation of writing this letter. Oddly, my birthday eight months away was the expiry on the carton. Is this a good or bad sign, I wonder? e positive in me says good, and a DEFINITE reminder of one year older. Possibly a sign that here we are, it’s Spring, another season of newness, a year of change! I think that was precisely it—a time to celebrate change. With that, I proudly share with you our fresh Spring look. What do you think? Please write to me and let me know – [email protected].

COMMUNITY culture

How to:

Art is everywhere in Victoria. Locals know it, visitors know it, and artists certainly know it. But how many of us actually buy art? I would guess that it’s not a large percentage of Victoria residents, and yet it’s not as though we have any objections to owning something cool and pretty. So what’s up?

Chris Tyrell, an instructor at Emily Carr University and author of a pile of acclaimed books and articles on the art business, says that the biggest obstacle to buying art is not financial but psychological. It’s lack of confidence in one’s own ability to choose art well. Since art rarely has intrinsic value (unlike, say, jewelry), but is often chosen purely on a basis of taste, we feel very exposed when we buy and display art. Two main things can relieve this anxiety, Nigel or no Nigel, and unlock your ability to make excellent art purchases: a little knowledge, and a lot of respect. The knowledge part is something you can acquire over time, and there are a lot of paths in becoming versed in fine art. But the respect thing is just a decision you make and stick with. You decide to respect art, and you don’t look back. But for heaven’s sake, don’t respect all art. Only the good stuff! How do you know the difference?

First I need to define the term “art”. I’m talking about original visual art — that is, painting, sculpture, or ceramic — that has actually had the artist’s hands on it. So, not a reproduction. (Intaglio prints are an exception; they are prints made personally by the artist through a studio process — lithograph, mono-print, etching, etc.— and they are certainly considered original art.) If you are serious about collecting art, you must buy originals. Originals have value because they are unique and handmade, and they look far better than reproductions. A pervasive myth is that the criteria for what makes good art are arbitrary and silly. We’ve all heard it: “but my kid could do that!” If you’ve said it, please don’t tell me. There are objective standards for good art – yes, even the stuff you don’t understand—just as there are functional and elegant descriptors for food and wine. Imagine someone who has no respect for the culture of wine,

and scoffs at the language sommeliers and other experts use to describe it. Will that person ever be able to judge, choose, and appreciate wine? Of course not! Respect is the key. In the next issue of Victoria Almost Free, I’ll be exploring some of the real and muscular criteria collectors use to judge and purchase works of art. These criteria can help you spot art worth having, whether you find it in a café or a gallery. Spoiler alert: you are about eight zillion times more likely to find decent art in a gallery, and later I’ll explain why.

Jenny Hainsworth is an artist and musician living in Victoria with her geranium Henri. You can see some of her art at www.rabbitinthedirt.wordpress.com as well as on posters about town for the stunning choral group Ensemble Laude, and at Full Circle Studio Arts.

COVER FEATURE ARTIST

I believe my work is filling a very large gap in the use of new mediums in the fine arts. Most conventional art schools teach mediums that are centuries old; oil painting, printmaking, water colour, pen and ink, and many more in sculpture such as wood, metal and stone. When budgets allow rather than introducing new processes and contemporary materials schools add computer generated imagery into the mix. Although this is a great medium I cannot help but wonder what Leonardo Da Vinci would have created with liquid polymers and tempered glass. When I finished my formal education back in 1981 I decided to take a different approach and started experimenting with more contemporary mediums such as reclaimed tempered glass, resins, spray paints and assorted plastic films. Over the last three decades I have developed many new techniques using a combination of these materials. With these resources I have developed what I believe to be new artistic mediums in 3-dimentional fine art painting, sculpture and functional works. The techniques I developed for painting on glass are multidimensional in appearance and can be created on canvas or board, as well. My patented formula for bending glass without heat allows

me to create large glass sculptures without the limitations faced when using heat. This has allowed me to earn a living from the sale of my work. I have also received some notoriety for my inventions including being featured on The Discovery Channel where I created a sculpture using my patented formula for bending glass without heat. I was offered a deal on the popular television show The Dragons Den, and I have had numerous published articles, local, national, and international, and many radio interviews. I have many visions yet to create which I hope I can accomplish in this lifetime. As well as teaching some of these techniques. I reside with my wife and daughter and have a studio and gallery in Sidney, British Columbia Canada. Love Happens... In the Present Moment

BY VICTORIA HOLMES In this age of technological distractions as well as day to day noise and responsibility, is it even possible to be fully present in this moment? For many of us, it seems as though it takes a crisis to thrust us into the awareness of being present. It sounds easy enough, but my personal experience defies that notion! As an example, I am helping to care for my father who is not well. Today, we were able to walk down the hospital hallway using just a walker for stability. Rather than being ‘in the moment’ I was thinking about how I am excited to text my family and tell them. I thought about how happy they will be. Then I thought about where I will be able to rent a walker from, and whether or not it would be covered by Blue Cross. I missed the whole moment of only pure love and adoration for my father because I could not slow myself down enough to just ‘be.’ Does this sound familiar? I feel confident that it does for most of us. A simple exercise to practice being present is to do it while reading these words. Focus on each sentence. Completely erase the future and the past from your

thoughts. When we let go of the past and live in the totality of each moment we will find that is where love, peace, and calmness reside. The present moment is the best access to living our lives with higher level of consciousness. When we are present our true authentic self will be revealed. This expands our capacity for love and raises the vibration of not only our consciousness, but the vibration of the people around us as well. In order to do this we must to release the pain of the past that is keeping us stuck.>>

TIPS FOR Spring Colour Splashing BY CAROLYN BARTER, OWNER, BAJA ROSI’S

When we choose to re-live the hurts of the past, we hold our future hostage, denying ourselves of the manifestation of our hopes and dreams. To truly love ourselves and others in the present

moment we need to end the internal war we battle with ourselves that withholds us from the light that is forgiveness. You can choose to release everything now in this moment. Make peace with the past and nourish the present because love is always in the present moment. Without love for ourselves, we are likely to continue with the patterns of the

past. This causes us to repeat the same toxic thoughts and beliefs that keep us from moving forward. As we recognize the love inside of us, we release love to others and that is where the law of

attraction comes into play. Emotions on the same vibrational frequency are attracted to each other, and you will

draw loving people into your life without effort. These people will also recognize the call of their hearts desire and will both inspire and be inspired by your true authentic self. When we are willing to take action and release the ghosts of the past and our controlling ideas about the future then we can recognize that love is the force

and the true source of all our physical, emotional and spiritual energy. This love ignites a spark within each of us. Is the love from within you manifesting itself as a small single flame; or is it a roaring fire nourished by glowing embers that burn bright even in your darkest hours? It doesn’t matter what your situation is, the choice is always yours. ∎

When we are present our true authentic self will be revealed.

I am a LEO. I like to be noticed when I walk into a room and therefore I am not afraid to be loud, nor am I too shy to wear color in my wardrobe. But for many this is not the case. Every day I work with women who are trying to break out of the all black habit they have been stuck in for years. Or gals who LOVE the neutral look...tan, white, brown...so chic, but look at all the options out there! And HEY, it’s springtime and I think we should take advantage of the season to explore color a little more and push ourselves to step out of our fashion rut, just a little. You don’t have to invest in a whole new wardrobe to experiment a bit with color, and if you shop resale, you will spend very little on this adventure. Why not start with a belt...bright red, thin or thick. This will work well if you wear mostly neutrals or all black. It’s not too close to your face so you don’t have to worry about the shade so much, and red is so much fun! I dare ya’! If you’re ready for a little more excitement the scarf is a wonderfully sophisticated accessory and is available in ANY shade or print! GOOGLE ‘how to tie a scarf’ for a style that suits you best, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Other areas you can incorporate color would be shoes, earrings, necklace, or even your purse! Just one piece with an otherwise neutral outfit will make a statement and is sure to add some spice to your life! Always remember that fashion is meant to be fun, and a representation of your personality, so make sure you aren’t coming across as dark, morose, bland, or boring...POP some color into your wardrobe!

I never expected to fall in love. Like many who first entertain the idea, the initial approach comes with skepticism and even intimidation. I honestly thought I would try it for a month, expecting my normal routines to return at the end of the month. I have tried to alter my eating habits before, often to fail because of the extreme rigidness. And I lumped raw eating in with the rest. But I will never go back and have continued to eat 75% of my food raw ever since.

My Raw Month BY ELISSA BERGMAN

As I entered the first week, with the help of Ingredients Organic Market & Cafe, and their Raw Food Chef Shelagh Franklin, I learned just how interesting and challenging this journey would be. I learned my raw staple foods, altered the recipes I love into a raw alternative like Pad Thai, vegetarian sandwiches on rawgals, cream of mushroom soup slightly warmed, creamy tomato sauce over zucchini noodles, Thai green curry, etc. The first week I struggled with

energy levels and consumption of enough calories. Creativity turned challenges into inspiration and I am now working on a recipe book. As the first week turned into the second and to the third, things became easier. I noticed better energy levels, an increased sense of alertness, a lighter jump in my step during exercise, better digestion, solid sleeps, and a new-found excitement for counting my daily dose of fruits and vegetables. Now that I am done the challenge I have

had a few cooked meals, which reinforced the benefits of eating a primarily raw diet. After the cooked, somewhat processed meals, I felt a heavy stomach, fatigue, and soon after the meal brain fog. That’s when I knew it would be for the long-hall. To give you an idea of my current eating, I will have a fruit & greens smoothie for breakfast, a raw lunch, and a 50% raw supper, and it is so easy! I hope this has inspired you to try raw eating. Good luck! ∎

Like any heath condition we all want to help ourselves remain healthy! Having a mental health challenge or mental illness can feel like someone has pulled the rug out from under you. How do you regain footing? How do you make sense out of challenges that possibly keep reappearing in your life? The Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) is an internationally renowned tool used to help people gain control back in their lives despite mental illness or mental health challenge. WRAP was developed by Mary Ellen Copeland, is based on scientific evidence and is now available in Victoria, BC. WRAP is offered by trained peers and open to self-referral and to people with any mental health issue with/without diagnosis. The WRAP tool and peer support have been shown to be helpful in research and the evidence is growing. WRAP has been developed for children, youth, and adults. WRAP is helpful in school and work settings. How do you manage difficult conversations at school and work? How do you create a self-management plan to help in those environments? We can help!

We have heard the statistics. 1:4 will have a mental health issue over a lifetime. 3% will experience psychosis, often as early at 14 years of age. We know early help for youth and adults can be helpful, yet how can a person become empowered in life to help prevent reoccurring illness such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other health conditions? WRAP and Peer Support are described by people as being key to recovery! A youth who experienced psychosis and described that his life felt out of control. “In the WRAP course, I got a comprehensive view of what was going on for me and how to deal with it. Having a global view of my life has been empowering!” He is providing hope and help to others while enjoying school again. A destabilizing mood disorder almost snatched away one woman’s goal of completing her Master’s Degree. She has returned to complete her degree and is adding to the evidence that these

approaches help! When stress was threatening to pull the rug from under her again, I asked her if she had viewed her WRAP. She laughed and reviewed her WRAP and recalled what she needed to do to regain her balance. “My WRAP helps prevent relapse while also gives my family and friends a way to help me negotiate my ups and downs. I feel less stressed knowing I have a healthy plan in place and it has been shared with my key supporters.” A man with person with schizophrenia is enjoying his life and works full time providing services to others and relies on his WRAP to keep him well. He champions WRAP and its use for others. His life is balanced with fishing expedition trips, friends and family! Key concepts of WRAP & recovery such as wellness strategies, plans to recognize and respond to triggers and early warning signs, building support network, creating a crisis plan and relapse prevention.

ORANGE TERIYAKI CHICKEN WINGSOffered often as a daily feature, not only just on Wing Wednesday, these “jumbo bites” hover in the realm of higher end wings in the city. Golden to perfection on the outside, the inside remains moist and meaty to the last nibble. The right amount of sauce, but don’t let the Orange preceding Teriyaki fool you—these are definitely Teriyaki at heart with a splash of orange on the finish.

PESTO, CHICKEN & RED PEPPER PIZZAA healthy, thin & rising crust personal pizza option! The red peppers keep crisp and juicy and the chicken very tender. Doing it again, the sauce choice must be BBQ. A neat option would be alternative cheeses accompanying the 25 topping and 3 sauce choices. Not a menu item I would go to first, but that’s just my taste.

THE BIRKENSTOCK BURGERThe name says it all (vegetarian). I was disappointed I wasn’t served a beef burger with their recent change to local ground beef from Cowichan Bay Henry Farms. But I digress, next time. The house made veggie ground round, softly paired with the baby spinach, guacamole, tomato, creamy garlic sauce and onion ring saw a new experience for me. I personally desire this veggie patty with some punchy toppings found in the spicy Labamba or Hot Rancher, which I learned I can do any day of the week.

WILLIE’S HASHOne of my two favourite Hashes in the city! If not mistaken, a slight maple flavour emanates from their breakfast sausage sweetening each bite, which is why I also love the Farmhouse Benny. Bacon, Sausage, Pico de Gallo, Green Onion, Scrambled Eggs, Crisp Hash Browns, and the gooey cheesiness combine in perfect ratio. The Hash Browns stay crisp and don’t steal the show like other Hashes’ spuds. The simplicity ensures each bite boasts a distinct taste of ingredients. My only wish, more Pico de Gallo, please.

THE JACK KNOXNot for the faint of appetite, this breakfast tortilla wrap deals a meal on its own. The quality ingredients and flavour combination of Jack & Cheddar, Fluffy Scrambled Eggs, Sausage, and Creamy Chipotle Mayo, rolled in the flour tortilla, sits quite nicely on the palate, but a little on the safe side for this “spice girl.” I expected something more, like some fresh basil in the fluffy eggs, Italian sausage, or more chipotle! Sorry Jack, Willie’s still winning!

With Spring now officially here, there are really no excuses to get out and enjoy this great city of ours. For many of you fitness goals may take a hiatus during winter, while others get down to it – join running clinics, revive gym memberships and enjoy bracing walks. But for all of us there are little extras we can do during the day, which may seem small and insignificant at the time, but when added up can make strides when trying to stay in shape. Here are some tips that we all can benefit from:

1 If you have stairs in your office — take them rather than the elevator

Hello Stairs

2Make a habit of walking during your lunch breaks – choose a different route each time to break the monotony

Lunch BreakWalk About

3If you take the bus to work , get off one or two stops before you need to

Get Off Bus Early

4 Cycle to work — try it once a week and see how you feel. (You can always sign up for Bike to Work Week in May as an incentive)

Pedal Power

5 If you live within 5 kms of work – walk to work. Start once a week and build up

Walk to Work

6Before work – do a 15-20 min brisk walk then hit the shower, or a 5-10 min stretch using major muscle groups

Before Work Routine

7If you need something from your grocery store cycle or walk there

Cycle/Walk for Groceries

8If you are home-based and have an appointment or meeting, leave the car at home and cycle or walk

Cycle/Walk for Meetings

9 Try and stretch during the day – basic hamstring and quad stretches as well as shoulder and neck exercises can easily be done for a few minutes at a time at your desk or at home

Stretch

10 Introduce some healthy options into your diet. Try a veggie or healthy drink that you haven’t tried before. If you are primarily a meat eater, introduce fish into your diet once or twice a week

Eat Well

12 If you really can’t face breakfast make a fruit smoothie – it’s a delicious way to start the day

Smoothies

11 Always have a glass of water on your desk and sip during the day. And always have a water bottle in the car or on your bike.

Water

These are just a few tips that we should all find time for in our busy lives. They only take a few minutes and will help us stay on track to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The Farmhouse Eggs BennyJust Perfect! I could stop here, because I may have found my favourite already. The creamy hollandaise combined with sausage, onions, garlic, tomatoes, and eggs would bring smile to any farm-hand’s face. No one flavour overpowers in each pleasant bite. I love the crispy hash browns. This is one of my favourite Bennys in the city!

Cabin 12’s French FriesAlthough not quite high-end pomme frites, these fries are very pleasing in their hand-cut simplicity. They are crispy on the outside, and the texture you should expect on the inside – cooked just right! For a treat, try their poutine!

The Coastline WrapA light, fresh taste with enough spinach to please even Popeye. Grilled chicken breast, house made pico de gallo and creamy garlic sauce make a nice light lunch. Although not my first menu choice (The Farmhouse Benny still wins), it’s a great healthy option.

Spinach SaladNot a typical Spinach Salad, but a smooth flavour and just the right blend of ingredients. An original take on a classic combining sun dried tomatoes, grapes and feta, balsamic dressing with a dash of honey. If having the meal size, I would suggest adding a grilled chicken breast.

Rib-Diculous Ribs (Friday is Rib Night!)The ribs are both: melt in your mouth and fall of the bone tender. There are three sauce flavour options: Hot, BBQ, or Honey Garlic. I tried the Hot for my first rack. I added a half rack and tried the Honey Garlic which I much preferred over the Hot. I’ll be sticking to the Honey Garlic next time and trying the BBQ for the half rack. A great deal to be had, including house made fries or garlic mashed potatoes and daily veg.

The Hot Rancher (AKA, Spicy Chicken Burger)This is co-owner Dan the Man’s favourite meal, obviously I had to try it. I have never eaten anything which included BACON that could taste so fresh and healthy. A lovely combination of heat from the red onion and hot sauce combined with chicken, bacon, cheddar and jack cheese, freshness from the lettuce and tomato, and ranch dressing for that little something extra.

Like true West Coast charm, this area offers outdoor adventure, rugged beauty, exceptional artisans, culture, and many independent West Coast dining options. With its recent growth, everyday amenities are close at hand, with no need to travel in to Downtown Victoria. Picnic at Thetis Lake, explore

East Sooke Park, bask in the sun at stunning Sooke Potholes, or escape to one of the many vacation rentals in Sooke for a weekend get-away, like Otter Point Beach House! On this next sunny weekend, go out and enjoy all these communities have to offer!
