DESCRIPTION
April/May 2013 Elk Horn newsletter of Gardena Elks Lodge #1919 in Gardena, CATRANSCRIPT
A Message from your Exalted Ruler
Welcome to the new year of Elkdom!
First of all, let me be the first to thank each and every one of you for entrusting me with your lodge. I will strive to do my best to make Gardena a leading lodge in our district.
We are a young group of officers who are eager to give back to our lodge. I am asking all of you for your participation throughout the upcoming months to ensure that we start off on the
right foot.
April will start this off. I hope to see all of those who can attend our Inaugural Ball.
May will bring our state convention in Anaheim, everyone is welcome. If you have never been, this would be a great opportunity because it is in our back yard.
Once again, thank you and come join us and be a part of a new experience.
Fraternally,
Reyne Rocha—Exalted Ruler

Message from your Lecturing Knight Aloha and Mahalo for nominating me as your Lecturing Knight for 2013-2014. I will do my best to bring credit to Gardena Elks 1919 and their members. A little about myself. Born and raised in So Cal, graduated from Banning High School, joined the US Army in 1976 as an infantryman. After 4 years of service started a job at Hughes Air-craft Company today known as Raytheon Systems in El Segundo. There, I'm responsible for working on fighter
aircraft radar systems and avionics for over 30 years. I'm very active in the Hawaiian community here in California and neighboring states. I play in the band Ka'amea almost every weekend and tour the western region of the US. I have been an Elk for 3 years! You might not of seen me because I have been cooking in the kitchen on hamburger night. Look-ing forward to serving you and making this Lodge the best it can be with good decisions and leadership in the coming year.
Kimo Carlos, Lecturing Knight
Message from your Loyal Knight
Fellow Elk Members,
I’m so proud and honored to be a part of the Elk Officer Team. As your new Loyal Knight, I will do the best I can
in my new responsibilities. I look forward not only being able to serve our community, but also being able to
interact and get to know each and everyone of you. Although, I have only been an Elk member for three years, I have come to
love the environment in which we participate. I look forward to helping in the growth of this lodge, and in the growth of my
own knowledge as an Elk member and officer.
Fraternally,
Matt Almaraz, Loyal Knight

A message from your Leading Knight Happy spring to you ! It was rough losing that hour of sleep when we sprang forward an hour, but I sure do love leaving work while its still light out. Makes everything feel a little lighter and carefree ! Seems like we've been pretty busy in the lodge this year so far. Our Super Bowl party was fun . The luncheon for our CHEA President in the jolly corks was packed and seemed
to be enjoyed by all. The birthday ball had an added element of a visual presentation of all the past Exalted Rulers. The Dancing Through the Decades Fundraiser was sold out and a complete blast! The fade out for our three time ER Rodney, a couple Eggs to order breakfasts, Fish Fry Fridays, old timers night ,and by the time this Elk Horn comes out we will have had installation of new officers and coming up on Inaugural Ball. Phew.. That is a lot! Now that we are into spring, it's a great time to come to the lodge and get involved. Maybe you have an idea for an event or a fundraiser? Come on down and get active in OUR lodge! Fraternally, Alyssa Santos, Leading Knight

Elks Conventions aren't just for Officers, all Elks are encouraged to attend!
This year, the 98th CHEA Convention will be held May 15-18th at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel. Even if you can only come for one day or night, it is a great opportunity to learn what other Lodges are doing and make some new friends! Talk to anyone who has been - Elks conventions are very informative and a LOT of fun!
Call the office if you are interested in attending. More details will be posted on our Gardena Elks blog and the
Gardena Elks #1919 FaceBook page when they become available.

It’s a New Lodge Year—VOLUNTEER!!!
People like to help, most just aren’t sure how to get started.
Here are some ideas:
1. If you see that something needs to get done around here and you can do it, take it on. *If it involves throwing
anything away, speak to a Trustee first, as they are responsible for Lodge property.
2. Offer to help with an event that interests you, and in a way that you can commit to helping. There is a chairman
for each event and they always need help with something from decorating to soliciting raffle prizes to selling raf-
fle tickets!
3. Get a friend to join you – things are always a little more fun when you have a friend helping too.
4. If you have an idea for an event or party, and are willing to be the event chair, speak to the Lodge Activities
Chairperson to get started. There are guidelines and resources to ensure you are successful.
5. Attend the monthly House Committee meetings on the last Tuesday of each month. Remember, your officers
represent you and your Lodge.
Look forward to seeing you active in YOUR lodge this year.— Tish McCauley
