Win Wars, Not Battles

Its easy to get caught up in dailydefeats. If you arent careful, you couldget discouraged and feel like giving up.When you are discouraged by every -day setbacks, its crucial to keep your

eye on the big picture.

A war is simply a series of smaller bat -tles. The winner of a war often loses

just as many battles as he wins, butwith courage and preparation, at somepoint he manages to turn the tide orbreak his opponents will completely.If you want to win a war, prepare tosuffer plenty of losses.

It stings to lose. When you lose, youneed stronger leadership within youto make you stronger, and to get upagain. Not everybody can turn theirfailures into victories. You dont haveto win everything in your life. Butmake sure that you win the ultimategoals of you. Successful people arethose who win wars.

At Leo District 306 A2, we focus onbuilding leaders who can win wars.

LEO OLYMPICS 2013Annual Leo Multiple Sports Meet was held on24th of March 2013 at Ananda College grounds

On behalf of Leo District 306 A2: Leo Club of Polgasowitaalong with Leo club of Moragahahena and Leo club of Bu -lathsinghala organized this event. The event was consistedwith track events, eld events and several team events. Morethan 100 Leos have par cipated for events.

Leo District 306 A2 became the Champions in Leo Olympics2013 and won 3/4 best athlete awards.

Leo Awurudu Uthsawaya

Fellowship event organized every year to celebthe Sinhala & Hindu New Year.

Leo Awurudu Uthsawaya is a fellowship event or -ganized every year to celebrate the Sinhala & Hin -du New Year. This me Leo Club of BandaragamaCentral, Leo Club of Dehiwala Pepiliyana, Leo Clubof Godigamuwa, Leo Club of Horana Metro, LeoClub of Madurawala, Leo Club of Moragahahena,Leo Club of Polgasowita and Leo Club of Univer -sity of Moratuwa had the privilege to become theorganizing clubs of this event.

Leo Awurudu Uthsawaya held at Camila School atMa egoda on 20th April 2013 from 9.30am on -wards. The chief guest for the event was DistrictGovernor Duminda Munasinghe MJF, JP. Duringthe event number of tradi onal items were or -ganized and there were more than 15 items heldduring the day.

What motivated you to venture into Leoism?I became a Leo purely by accident. I had gone on a sales visit to meet a clientcalled Cyril Wickramaratne. I was trying to sell him a website. I saw someLionistic awards in his house and asked him what they were purely to startup a conversation with him and get my sale. Well he turned out to be a pastDCL of Leo District 306A and he set me up with some Leos of Colombo (Host)and the rest as they say is history. I got my sale too by the way.

What were the challenges that you faced as a Leader of Leo District?My biggest challenge was inexperience. I had been a Leo for just over a year when I became District President. Myparents were not Lions so not even the Lions knew me when I became DP and I was not a rich kid as well to spendout of the my own pocket for Leoistic events.

How did you overcome those challenges?1. I had a very strong home club. The Leo Club of Colombo (Host) was very strong that year and backed me to the hilt.2. I had good strong past leaders who did not poke in to my work unnecessarily. This is very important. SometimesPDPs try dont know when to draw the line and let new people handle things. I was lucky I had some good seniors toback me.3. I had an awesome team of Council Officers. I am yet to see any District Council that could match up to the team Ihad 10 years ago.4. I always thought out of the box. I coupled every Leo event with a project and ensured that all my events had excel -

lent participation never before seen in the Multiple.5. I tried to be practical. In fact many of the things, procedures, processes used by Leos in your District and in Sri Lankawere introduced by me.6. I got to know all Leos of my District personally. I knew most of them by name and even visited the homes of all ClubPresidents during my year.

What are your values in Leoism?1. Never run after awards. Work hard and smart and awards will come to you.2. Never forget where you started and who helped you achieve these things3. Always stand up for the right thing. Being a leader is not always about being popular. It is doing what is right. I waslucky. I did the right thing and became popular too. Even though its 6 years after I left Leoism, Leos still come to me

for advice. Its all about earning the respect of others.

How did the experiences from Leoism help you to climb the carrier ladder?I owe every achievement in life to Leoism. 10 years ago if youd met me you would not believe I would be in this posi -tion today. I was backward, didnt have too many friends and couldnt come up and speak one sentence. But becauseof the opportunities I got through Leoism to come forward and make speeches and improve myself. Today companyspay me to come and talk to their staff on motivation, leadership and self-development.Leoism has also thought me how to prepare top-class reports, how to conduct meetings, how to network with peopleand so much more.

What is your message to Leoism as a Leo who came a long way as a Leo Leader?Grab every opportunity that comes your way. Never say no and never give up. If a timid, backward guy like me canbecome what I am today, imagine what talented people like you can achieve, if only you will believe.

This is a major fund raising project organized to make a dona on forNa onal Cancer Hospital, Maharagama for the be erment of the Can -cer Pa ents. This project was organized by a union of 13 Leo clubs of Zone A1 & Zone A2. The event was held at Sri Sambuddhathwa JayanthiMandiraya, Colombo 05 on 06th April 2013 from 5.30pm onwards. TheChief guest was District Governor Lion Duminda Munasinghe MJF, JPand Lady Lion Rasadaree Munasinghe also par cipated in the event.

Leos of Katuwawala organized a workshop for Montessori and pre -school teachers on 04th April 2013. It was conducted by the Lady LionArosha Silva of Lions club of Katuwawala with about 100 par cipants.Par cipants were given a wonderful opportunity to train as experiencedteachers while developing their knowledge in interna onal level.

Leo club of Ma egoda organized the LeoRadio for 3rd consecu ve year with anoth -er new experienced to Leos in our district.Every year it contained something new andsomething grateful with lots of experiencesand fun. It is a web based radio that broad -cast from www.ma egodaleos.org. It wasa project that went out for all 24 hours inthose three days.

Organized by Leos of Mattegoda for the 3consecutive time

Leo Club of Polgasowita with the support of Leo Club of Colombo Knights and Leo Clubof Mahanama College organized the mulservice project on 26th of March 2013 atSoysa Maha Vidyalaya, Koralaima.

If someone asks you about your big -gest hope for the near future, theanswer may be very de nite at themoment the ques on is asked. If youare studying for an exam the answershould be passing the exam with y -ing colors and then planning for yourfurther studies. The answer will behearing the news that you have gothired for a posi on, when you areconfused a er facing an interviewfor a job. And a er the gradua onor beginning of your new career lifeyour desires are further expanding.

What about the next step? It may beto build up your own home, to driveyour own car and to found a familyof your own. What about the day be -

fore your wedding? Your only hopeis to see the majesty and pres geon the day or simply the wedding of your dreams. This is how you createhopes and how they are renewed by

me. Some mes we think that ourhopes are not always as same as oth -ers. But one thing is common thatwe never nd an End in our hopesunless we die.

Let us go back to your school class -room for a while. You are six years

old and the teacher asks you toshare what you want to be whenyou grow up?

An astronaut? A scien st? or Super -man?

At that me you had one big dreamand an ambi on. That is natural.When you grow up many interestsand big hopes come to your life. Andsome mes you lose focus on thatkey target or your childhood dream.That is also natural. But it is goodto keep this in mind; we should notlet all our hopes to go in that way.We have to arrange our path stepby step, so as to make our dreamshappen in real life. Even though we

think that some of them are impos -sible, there are people who madethem natural.

Hopes are extremely important inlife, for it allows you, compels you towork towards something be er foryourselves and others. If you hopefor a be er life for yourself and yourfamily, it means that you are goingto work towards that be er life. But

there is one important thing to re -member, you need to learn how to

navigate your hopes be er in orderto live fully and survive safely.

When you are dreaming for some -thing or making any hope in your life,make sure that you have consideredthe full poten al and power that youhave. And do not let low expecta -

ons destroy your high hopes and bigdreams. Stay targeted and focusedon doing one thing and one thingwell. This does not meant to give upall the other hopes but whatever youdo and wherever you are, despitethe moment or the situa on thereshould be one clear and strong targetin your life.

a ons of people. There is a nice say -ing which re ects our dreams, hopesand the way we should make our tar -gets. Always aim for the moon, be -cause if you miss, you may hit a star.As it is men oned earlier do not letlow expecta ons destroy your highhopes and big dreams. Dear Leos, it isnot about being astronauts or target -ing the moon, but it is all about whatyou want in your life. The Decision is

Golden Netz is an Indoor Cricket Tournament which is being organized for Leos of Sri Lanka for the very rst me inthe history. It was proudly organized by Leo Club of University of Moratuwa , Leo Club of Unawatuna Diamond Stars,Leo club of Bulathsinghala, Leo club of Negambo Host, Leo club of Katuwawala, Leo club of Wickramasinghapura forthe Mul ple. The tournament was a new experience for Leos from all over the island and will certainly be a great op -

portunity to promote this fast spreading game of Indoor Cricket in Sri Lanka.

Golden Netz was held on 25th of April 2013 from 9 am onwards at Fingara Interna onal Cricket Stadium, Boralesga -muwa. The players experienced world-class Indoor Cricket facili es throughout the tournament in a unique environ -ment at Fingara premises.

With this ini a ve of cricket recogni on Golden Netz, it would enable youngsters represen ng each and every cornerof the island to experience this game in interna onal standards while providing a fer le response for the rising demandof Indoor Cricket in the country.
