ST. ELIZABETH CATHOLIC CHURCH IGLESIA CATÓLICA DE SANTA ELIZABETH

SVDP HOLIDAY FUND DRIVE The St. Elizabeth Conference of St. Vincent de Paul invites you to share in our Thanksgiving Food Drive program. In working very closely with the needy of our par-ish community, we have found

that many families celebrate Thanksgiving with a variety of food, adding their own unique touch to the holiday. There-fore, instead of requesting contributions of non-perishable food items for the more than fifty families we support, we are asking parishioners to simply provide a monetary contribution to our Conference. The money we raise will allow us to purchase restricted Ralphs grocery gift certifi-cates, a type which excludes alcohol and tobacco sales, thus allowing each family to select food items which meet their individual needs for celebrating the holiday. In or-der to do this, we estimate that we will need to raise at least $4,000 this Thanksgiving. We thank you for your tremendous support throughout the year, and ask that you continue with your generosity and support our Thanksgiving Food Program. Checks should be made payable to St. Eliza-beth SVDP, and can be either submitted or mailed to the parish center, attention Deacon Charles Mitchell, SVDP Treasurer. The parish mailing address is St. Elizabeth Church, 1879 N. Lake Ave., Altadena, CA 91001. You may also place your contribution in the collection basket, in an envelope made out to SVDP- St. Elizabeth Conference, Holiday Fund Drive. All contributions are tax deductible, and we ask that they be provided no later than November 16th. God bless you and your commitment to the needy of our parish community. Our Conference members, as well as those you help. will keep you always in their prayers.

GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES “It’s going to get worse before it gets better” is a phrase that pre-pares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know that enduring a diffi-cult time will require some strenu-ous physical or emotional energy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experi-

ence tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that something better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s readings. They point to-ward the promises of God’s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Christians developed very different tradi-tions for confessing sin. They see the priest as a wit-ness to God’s action, a physician, if you will, rather than a judge. A person confesses sin to God while standing in front of an icon of Jesus, face to face. Without a grill, in the full light of day, near a table with an open Gospel book, the penitent asks the Lord for mercy. A priest standing to the side might offer counsel and confirm God’s gift of forgiveness. Rather than list sins and of-fenses, an Eastern Christian is more likely to speak of a disposition of heart toward God and neighbor, and the desire to forgive those who have wronged them. Remarkably, although only a priest can pronounce the prayers of forgiveness, lay people, including married men and women, single Christians, monks, and nuns, may witness the confession. This is akin to the ancient Celtic practice of a “soul friend” as a spiritual mentor. Bishops may bless anyone with sufficient theological knowledge and discretion to do this. Eastern Catholics in the United States have largely drifted away from this tra-dition and toward Latin Rite customs such as confes-sional screens, set formulas and prayers, and penances. Today, in the interest of preserving the authentic tradi-tion of the Eastern Church, there is a move to restore the older form. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

November is National Black Catholic History Month

In the 2013 Vatican conclave,

before Bishop Jorge Bergoglio was

elected as our first pope from Latin

America, there was wide news me-

dia speculation that perhaps the

bishops would elect the Catholic

Church's first African pope. How-

ever, our first African pope was

elected in 189 A.D., and served for

ten years. He was Pope St. Victor I, our 14th pope, the one

responsible for fixing the date for the yearly celebration of

Easter throughout the Christian world, and for the celebra-

tion of the liturgy in Latin. His feast day is July 28.

THANKSGIVING DAY… On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26th , we will have our community Thanksgiving Mass at 9:30am. You are invited to bring the bread and wine you will be using for your Thanksgiving meal for a special blessing.

DID YOU KNOW?

When secrets become dangerous

There is no better time of year to review the important

family rules that help to keep all children safe. It takes just

a few moments to review with your children what to do in an

emergency, who the special and safe adults in their life are,

and the importance of not keeping secrets. Some secrets,

like a gift for a special occasion, can be fun and safe to keep.

Secrets that hurt others, involve any kind of unsafe or inap-

propriate touching or anything that bothers a child – are

secrets that are NOT safe to keep. Help your child under-

stand the difference. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article

“Back to School: Secrets,” email: [email protected].

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROGRAM Again this year the St. Elizabeth St. Vin-cent de Paul Conference will be sponsoring its Adopt-a-Family Program that provides families who need a helping hand with food market and department store gift certificates so that they may enjoy a joyful Christmas. A sign-up table will be located in the North Patio after the masses on the weekend of

November 28th.
