From the President…………. Pam Hynek Greetings, fellow artists!
Here we are, it's 2017 and a great conference rolling up in a couple of months. This is the third conference
I've been part of hosting, and I've always had fun. Come if you can, you will wonder why you didn't do it
sooner!
ANAC is a great organization. It's a rare thing to have people from all across the state come together and
support art. These days it seems art is taking a hit. Who needs art? Why should we fund art? What if some-
one told me I can't paint anymore? I'd draw. Ok, they're taking away my pencils and charcoal. Now what?
I draw in the dirt. I'll put rocks in a pattern. I can paint in my head. I believe we are very fortunate to have
the freedom to create our work and extremely fortunate to have a state conference as a venue to display it.
Where else do you find a body of work like our Nebraska artists put together every year in June? It takes
some effort, but it's well worth it. I feel it should be something we as ANAC members should pitch in and
make possible because we CAN.
Our club is important to this state, and art. This isn't a tough gig. If you want a voice in this club, come to
the general meeting at our conference in York. Any member can
come, any member can volunteer to be on the board. All members
should attend, or at least have a representative from their club to
attend. If you have any questions, give them to your representa-
tive. If you want to join the board, either come and throw your hat
in the ring, or let someone know you're interested.
I've been honored to be president of this great club.
ANAC is truly amazing. You are what makes this club
successful. Let's keep this great organization moving
forward!
From the Vice President…………..Wendy Mues Bonge
Picture yourself at YORK Our get together is right around the corner and final preparations are being made. Local shows are under-
way and state entries will be due on May 1st for the 53rd annual ANAC Conference. It takes a lot of effort
from several volunteers to organize such an event. The best thank you to offer is to attend the show, gen-
eral meeting, banquet and get involved in the activities and workshops with fellow artists, old friends and
new ones.
In fact, invite a friend to attend with you.
We are living in a time of selfies. Youngsters, including my
daughter, have perfected the art of selfies. Those born before mi-
crowaves, maybe not so much. There will be many photo opportu-
nities at the unique workshops that have been scheduled for your
benefit and enjoyment.
So picture yourself at York. It is centrally located and in one of the
roads that connect all of our clubs.
We are also in a time where adult coloring books are popular, so I
was thinking it would be fun to color your own t-shirts. Picture
that.

Conference News 2017 ~6~
Inside the artist, I am about painting, about people, and helping others. I am an artist of the land; I am a plein air artist. Born in the Flint Hills of Kansas with 4 sisters and 1 brother, my father was a cowboy turned truck driver, and we were lucky enough to have a stay at home Mom. Served in the USAF at the end of the Vietnam War, I went straight to study art at Johnson County Commu-nity College on the GI Bill. Here I met Prof Jean Howard, and learned painting. My professional career as an artist began in 1979 at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Missouri, where I learned
the art of sculpting in metal and continued as a Master Engraver for the next 30 years.
The end of the 70’s and early 80’s I began competing in National and International painting competitions and winning. I did not continue with my painting, I let a sure career, and a growing family take front seat to my experiment with putting paint to canvas. The 21st century brought many changes in his life. The biggest was the realization that drugs & alcohol were not the cure-all that I thought it was, and that the only way forward was to put it behind. With this knowl-edge, a new marriage to Susie, my loving and supportive wife I was able to focus on what I loved and did best,
PAINT!
In 2010 I stepped outdoors for the first time and found that you can combine painting with the great wide open, through a Continuing Education course at the Kansas City Art Institute, taught by Anne Garney. At
this realization I went full force ahead without looking back.
Late 2011 I met who was to be my Mentor till his untimely death. Rick Howell was not only one of the most talented artists I had ever met, but above that he loved people and saw belief and hopes in each and every-
one.
I believe that one can help themselves best by helping others. I don’t try to inspire, or be any sort of model. I am an imperfect soul, and look to be spending my life here learning as I can. I have a lot of experience I can share; if that inspires another in some manner I am honored. My help in forming the Missouri Valley Impressionist Society with Jeff Sparks, Brent Seevers, and Rachel Mindrup was for this purpose. To help other artists and art lovers find a place they could live, learn, and share art in this wonderful region I live in.

“Painting the Landscape from Life”
Day 1 Composition: starting with a good foundation
Day 2 Values: more important than color in a successful painting
Day 3 Color: creating depth with color temperatures This workshop is appropriate for all levels with a basic
understanding of the materials.
Easel: something easy to carry and set up, such as Open Box M, French Easel, EasyL, Soltek, Guerrilla Box Paints: I will be working in oils, which I recommend for plein air, but bring what you are most comfortable with. My pal-let is a “limited pallet” of… Colors: Titanium White Alizarin Crimson Ultramarine Blue Cadmium Red, light Cadmium Yellow, light bring the above colors, if you want to embellish your selection a little… Yellow Ochre Viridian These are the colors I recommend you bring, if you want to bring others that you like, please feel free to do so. Brushes: I use primarily a#6, & #8 flat bristle, you might bring a #4 if you like smaller, but at least the #8 bristle. Any brand will work as long as their hairs don’t fall out when painting. I like the Winsor Newton & Connoisseur Canvases: 6-9 panels or stretched canvases, pre-gessoed, sizes, no smaller than 8x10, I recommend 9x12”, 11x14”, 12x16” or 14x18” (it’s better to have too many, than not enough.) Pallet, (I use a 12x16” pallet seal) Mineral Spirits: gamsol, or turpenoid (not odorless paint thinner or turpentine) Medium: Liquin original, or something similar, IE: Gamblin solvent free gel Pallet knife: something with a nice flexible blade Paper Towels Trash bag Black Magic Marker or Sharpie, Small sketch pad Other things you should bring… hat, ,sunscreen, water, bug spray, wet canvas carrier, clamp on umbrella for blocking the sun, camping stool or chair, bungie cords, strong clamps, rubber or vinyl gloves, & lunch Anything else you usually take with you outdoors to paint, but try to keep your load small. Too much gear gets too

Thursday, June 8, 9-4
York Middle School
Linda Bernett is a self taught mixed media artist, who specializes in Alcohol Inks. Currently she is involved
working in cold wax and oils. She has always been interested in the creative process, and about 15 years ago
entered into a gourd art venture with her sister. During this time span she learned to design and paint on this 3-
D canvas.
She has taught classes in alcohol inks, mixed media and gourd art. Recently she was invited as Artist of the
I believe in the process of creation, that the more you play the more learned. Perfect when dealing with alco-
hol inks, a different animal. Alcohol inks have a spontaneity and color vibrancy which we will use for pur-
poseful play and exploration.
This is an introduction to the basics of alcohol inks. Discovering color reactions, blending, working of colors
and combining varied techniques and effects with this mercurial medium. Then we will journey to discover
how to use our newfound skills. You should have 3-4 finished pieces by the end of class/day.
Required Supplies:
Colors of alcohol ink: preferring Ranger Adirondack alcohol ink (A 3– pack can be found in the scrapbooking
area of major craft stores) or Pinata alcohol ink, available in art stores.

tile.

supplies if you have and wish to bring are: a small spray mister, masking

I started working with gourds about 15 years ago, when my sister grew gourds in her gourden. I love working with a nature craft as the possibilities of what to create are endless. It is truly ad-dictive for me and I have to remind my spouse that I am a gourder not a hoarder. Required supplies: Dried, cured cleaned gourd ( the thin waxy skin scrubbed off) I will bring a supply of cut and or un-cut cleaned gourds for purchase. Medium of your choice, you can bring several: acrylics, watercolors, markers, dyes, inks– such as alcohol ink, leather dye, and acrylic ink, colored pencils, oil pencils, oil pastels. “No Days Mosaics”
Friday, June 9, 9-4
~11~
Mosaics, for many years, has always been a several day project. Extremely messy, with glue,
grout and drying time for every step. In the past few years a new product has appeared on the market to shorten the wait time for all the mosaic pieces to dry and set for your finished piece of art. No Days Mosaic Adhesive ™ will be used to adhere your design to the substrate of your fin-ished glass mosaic piece. In this one day class, you will complete a finished piece of mosaic art, in one day, that you can take home and display at the end of convention.
List of Supplies Provided for the student
Varied selections of glass Mosaic Cutters Writing utensils
Substrate to build on Adhesive Grout- several colors
Gloves
IF you wish to bring your own design ideas, that would be great. Otherwise, I will share some ideas and bring some as well. I will also have some design pieces that you can purchase for a nominal fee the day of class. The most important thing to remember is make sure your imagination is still “turned on” for this class and just have fun!

permanent White House Collection. In 2004, one of my necklaces was chosen as a finalist in a contest sponsored by
FireMountain Gems. This necklace is shown in the 2004-2005 full color catalog produced by FireMountain Gems.
