Theminister has nothing do with him,all they are concerned about isremaining in power.” Upon beingasked what does he think of thestate government off icials notshowing up to pay homage, he said,“This shows how much ourgovernment is helping the forces.”“It’s very unfortunate that chief

Rebel Congress MLA UmeshJadhav Monday submitted hisresignation to Karnataka SpeakerRamesh Kumar, according to statesecretariat sources.Jadhav, who appears to have sidedwith the rebel faction led byRamesh Jarkiholi which threatenedto topple the JD(S)-Congresscoalition government in the state,is a two-time MLA from Chincholiin Kalbyrgi district, a bastion ofsenior Congress leader MallikarjunKharge.Jadhav was reportedly unhappywith the “autocratic” style of SocialWelfare Minister Priyank Kharge.Sources close to Jadhav told PTIhe intends to jo in the BJP onWednesday.Commenting on the legislator’s exit,Karnataka Pradesh CongressCommittee president DineshGundu Rao said Jadhav was doing“drama” by promising to remainloyal to the party.“He shouldn’t forget that whateverhe’s today is because of Congress.Anyone can come and go but theparty will remain forever,” Rao toldreporters. He asserted that the other CongressMLAs will remain with the party. The Congress previously urged

Cong MLA Umesh Jadhav resigns from K’taka Assemblythe Speaker to take action againstJadhav and three other rebels afterthey failed to attend the CongressLegislature Party meeting lastmonth.

The speaker is yet to take a call onthat.KPCC working president EshwarKhandre said Jadhav had ruined hiscareer by quitting the party as the

speaker is yet to take a decision onhis disqualification.“Once disqualif ied , he cannotcontest elections,” Khandre said.

Speed of ReactionsThere are all sorts of reactions in chemistry and the speed

of reactions is an important area of research. Many reactions, such as rusting of iron, are slow reactions. Years ago, reactionsthat took a few seconds were considered as fast reactions! Butnow reactions taking milliseconds may be called medium fast! The concept of fastness has changed standards! Life is also afield of actions and reactions! Some are slow and some are fastetc! If we touch a flame, the reaction of feeling the pain (ofhotness) is immediate while ageing is a slow reaction. We donot touch the flame again but people do not care much aboutageing! People learn to adjust fast in the case of fast reactionswhile the response is slow in the case of slow reactions! Heavydrinkers and those who indulge in excessive sex (with differentpartners) get fast reactions in terms of short-lived pleasures. One can see such people in millions all over the world with theassociated crimes, diseases and deaths! These actions haveother slower reactions such as damage of brain, kidneys, liverand venereal diseases. Such slow reactions are ignored by themillions to end up in untold pain, miseries and premature death! The human mind tends to ignore slow reactions and so does notlearn! Had the reactions been fast, people would have learnt tomake the world a better place to live. Excessive tapping ofunderground water, polluting the rivers, atmosphere, oceansetc are ignored (being slow reactions) that will certainly entaildangerous consequences for the planet! Who cares about slowreactions that are dangerous! The human mind is getting morepolluted by such reactions! The future is indeed frightening!

Price of developmentSome of the most beautiful places in Manipur’s Ukhrul

district have been submerged under water as an impact of theMaphou Dam constructed in the name of development.Chadong Village under Litan Police Station of Ukhrul districtwill be now history. The next generation will never know thatthere was once a peaceful village called Chadong inhabited bysome 1000 household in the state of Manipur. After the entirehas gone under water, some villagers managed to findalternative villages and started new live from the beginningbut some are left with no choice but to fight for their survivalalong with their little ones who are forced to leave the school(at a time when govt. talk about RTE) as the school theyattended no more existed because of the situation created bythe Mega Dam. This newspaper reported about some pregnantwomen being shifted to neighbouring Yangangpokpi area at atime when they are supposed to provide best form ofrelaxations.

The construction of the Maphou Dam may have been dueto the requirement because the process of development cannotremain stagnant. But when the kinds of development are meantto sabotage the lives of common man and extinction of someof the precious place, there is reason to put up this question –Why and for whom the development are meant for? It ispertinent to note that who is paying the costs and who isreceiving the benefits of these sorts of constructions beingtaken up in the name of development.

The modern definition says that “Development is a processor set of processes characterized by the consequence of generalsustained economic growth, and sets of natural, human, technological, cultural, f inancial, and organizationalconditions.”

“Development” in a common sense is the systematic useof scientific and technical knowledge to meet specificobjectives or requirements. But these are for the benefit ofthe people. If the so called development works failed to benefitthe people then the kind of constructions cannot be countedas developmental works.

Chadong was a small village with a population of not morethan 3000 people. It is already known to the planner of thismega Dam that the village will no more exist once the Damstarted commissioning. So, why did the government failed toshift this village to some other location where they can makea better living. A mere compensation to please them will notmake their live better – this is a common sense. Everyoneknows that money is important but it is not everything. Whenthe folks they have been living from a very long time cannotgather to continue the kind of happy life they shared, the socalled money provided to them in the name of compensationare valueless.

This senseless government has failed to understand that‘Development’ is not the construction of costly project but itis to provide better living to the citizens. If the constructionis to suffer the people, it is not called developmental project.
